My Car

Hunter takes another slow sip of coffee before staring down into the hot liquid and watching it swirl.

"Hmm?" He'd barely heard Katie. "Oh... yeah, everything's fine."An image from his nightmare flashes in his mind. "Guess maybe I didn't sleep so well," he admits with a shrug. "Once I get going, I'll be right as rain."

Glancing back to his coffee, he gives a little smirk. "Although right about now, a stiff drink would be nice." So far though, he hadn't seen a drop of alcohol at the ranch, not even beer. It seemed a little strange to him that with this many people, nobody drank, but if they did, perhaps they hid it well.

Looking to Katie again, he manages a smile before clinking his cup of coffee to hers in a toast. "Cheers."

Jared stars up at Grace, half feeling like a burden to her, and half feeling awfully good. She really was making an effort, and he knew she was trying to make him feel better. He probably shouldn't have been grouchy in the first place so she wouldn't have needed to do this, but he might as well not buck her. It was obvious she was determined to go out for ice cream.

"Okay," he finally relents. "But you'll have to help me pick a good flavor, 'cause I don't know what I like."

Reaching up to take her hands, he takes a deep breath. This was gonna hurt. But he could do it with her help. Pulling himself up, he was glad that Grace knew what she was doing - she was strong, but it took know-how to be able to help someone up like this and not topple over. Partway to his feet, Jared's legs tremble with the effort. He had yet to stand up straight since therapy started, but at least this was an improvement, and at least he's close enough to the wheelchair to let himself fall back down into it instead of going the other direction.

Giving a huff, he glances at Grace with a wry grin. "I might get the hang of this after all." He looks down at his feet and wriggles his toes in his socks. "I'm gonna need shoes if we go somewhere though and..."

He purses his lips, giving a little cringe, not sure if he should ask or not. "Can we take my car? It needs to be driven but my mom doesn't drive and Justin won't use it even though I offered."

Justin is glad that Beth is willing to stay up, and he smiles. "Good. I'll get the ice cream and..." He points over near his television to a little shelf. "My DVDs are over there in no specific order. I like 'em all so pick whatever you want."

Before long, they both were settled on the couch as  the movie played and enjoyed the cold treat. Food didn't make things better, but it sometimes was something that could be enjoyed despite a bad day.

And when the bowls were empty, for the first time, Justin felt he could do what he'd wanted to for longer than he'd admit. Sliding back into the corner of the couch, he turns a little more sideways and sinks down until he's almost laying down, making room between his legs. Motioning Beth over, he offers for her to come settle in with him for the rest of the movie. He knew that she was tired and still somewhat upset from the day - hardly a time for him to make a move for anything more. He'd leave it up to her, though, whether she really wanted his chest for a pillow or not.

Standing in front of the window on the fourth floor, Garret's eyes wander the grounds. The returning black van had not escaped his sight, nor had the movement of Victoria heading inside. His relief was hidden well - she had returned once more. There was still a small ache though, in the pit of his heart. He knew what kind of mission she'd been on, and he knew that she'd been with another man in ways that were denied him.

He knew that he and Victoria both, somehow through this nightmare, had developed a strong sense of loyalty and respect for each other - without marriage, neither would cross certain lines. But without even the hope of marriage, it had become a tiresome battle. Even so, Garret would never trade her for any other woman. If they had to spend the rest of their lives as they were now, always hiding, never married, never publicly affectionate - he'd do it.

Still... Garret knew her seductive jobs on most missions. And she knew about his own roles on most missions. Neither of them could avoid the inevitable. But they never spoke of it. Garret refused to look at Victoria any differently - the same as she never lost respect for him. It didn't take away that ache though... that pain way down deep that he was forced to keep hidden.

"...and I will give those plans to Terrance."

Garret's mind suddenly registers again the conversation that he'd been having with Medridge. He'd lost the train of thought, and for a split second, his adrenaline races. Thankfully, he recovered too quickly for Medridge to catch on. "That sounds like a good idea." He turns from the window and slowly walks around the other side of Medridge's desk, his hands clasped behind his back. "Might I suggest sending Jacobson on that job? It would be a good trial to see if he follows through."

"Excellent suggestion." Medridge jots down a note on his desk and nods. "Oh and by the way, you're going out tomorrow."

"Oh?"

"Yes. I need you to visit Sarah Regal again. She needs to be...persuaded to give up that intel we've been looking for."

Garret bristles. Speaking of loathsome jobs. Sarah was one of his "regulars" when it came to softening up someone the Agency needed. He wasn't sure which he'd prefer - a mission like this, or a mission where he'd murder innocent victims. Both made his stomach churn in ways that it didn't used to. How had he stayed numb for so long? "Good. I'm sure I can bring back what we need."

Medridge's lips curl into a crooked grin. "Your confidence is well-founded, I'm sure."

Half an hour later, Garret was heading down the long staircase. His combat clothing rustled as he moved, weighted by the usual gun on his thigh and other hidden weapons. Always be prepared - that was his job.

Making his way casually across the grounds, he stopped often to take up an observant stance as he watched. When not in Medridge's office, he was on guard duty - at all times. Soon though, he has slipped past the security cameras once again to disappear into the thick brush...the wall of safety.

As he sees Victoria on the swing, his heart gave a jolt like it always did. She was beautiful, no matter what. Coming up behind her, he leans down, draping his arms over her shoulders and burying his face along her neck. He breathed in deeply, filling his nostrils with the scent of her freshly shampooed hair. Leaning over her shoulder, he kisses her cheek softly. "I'm glad you're back," he welcomes quietly.

Withdraw?

Giving a laugh at Hunter's nickname he'd given her this morning Katie shakes her head a little bit. That was a new one for sure but Katie didn't mind. She could be called worse things so sticking with cupcake sounded good.

   "Good Morning!"

Sitting down Katie could see the exhausted look in Hunter's eye and it makes her cocks her head a little bit. She'd never seen Hunter quite this tired before when she's known he went to bed last night. Was it a bad night for him or just a rough mornng?

" You look like you're half asleep still. Everything alright?"

Taking a sip of her coffee Katie continues to study Hunter. He looked, worn out, tired, or like a person with a lot on his mind. She wondered what one it was or maybe it was all of them. I was it the lack of bad hobbits that was catching up with Hunter and maybe causing him withdraws?

"If I had better things I wanted to do I would be doing them Jared."

Gathering her things up and putting them back in her bag Grace works quickly before looking up at Jared and giving a smile. Holding out her hand to him his last comment goes ignored. She'd help him back up in his chair as long as she showed the effort to try and do it himself too.

"Alright lets get you up and hit the road. Not literately though. Since I mentioned ice cream I've got a craving for it and it's to nice to just sit here. So shall we?"

Grace's eyes give a sparkle as she looks at Jared. She'd see the wave of hope in his eyes, and the spark of excitement. Thats what she wanted to see, she wanted him to keep having that and not let it die out. Maybe getting him out and around was the way to do that.

Getting to Justin's place and petting the dogs for long moment Beth just lets them nuzzle her hand. They were was soft and there noses were wet and cold. On Beth's hand it kind of tickled and she didn't mind it at all. The dogs were almost comforting to her and gave a sense of shelter.

Following him inside and to the couch Beth puts her bag and pillow down. She didn't mind sleeping on Justin's couch. If asked that was where she rather sleep anyways. Sometimes they could be a lot more comfortable than a strange bed.

"Ice cream is always good, and a movie to go with it is a must. Though I can't promise I will stay away for the whole thing, I will try."

Giving a little smile to Justin Beth's eyes still held some of the fear from earlier. She probley wouldn't be able to sleep right now as it was with the thoughts that were running through her mind. So spending a little more time awake with Justin sounded like a better plan and the sweet treat was a nice all. Maybe that would help her feel a little better.

"Where do you keep your movies? I'll see about picking one...if you want."

Exiting the black van Victoria sets out a few shopping bags in hand. Her mission away this time had been a intrusting one to say the least and while she'd hated being two weeks away from the estate the good side was she got to go on a shopping spree and spend someone else money.

Going straight to her room to put her stuff away Victoria sits down in front of her vanity and just looks at herself for several long moments. This was lift, in and out of the same thing, seducing whoever for whatever...and yet her heart belonged to one. It was a horrible feeling honestly and inside something screamed at her that it was wrong. But...this was life.

Taking a quick shower, and slipping into one of her dresses she lets her hand just hang damp for the moment. She didn't feel much like putting it up at the moment. She only goal was one thing to see the one person who always made her feel ok.

Making her way outside, and to her favorite spot  on the whole estate Victoria sits down on the swing and gently rocks back and forth. She still needed to report to her grandfather but right now she wanted to see someone else first. She new, he would know she was back and she new he would come if he could get away. But she would wait and see for a little bit if he would or not.

Cupcake

Justin offers Beth a smile and heads for the door. There was no point in sticking around here any longer.

The drive to his house was long, but seemed even longer tonight. It stays mostly quiet, Justin making sure his hand was available to hold if Beth wanted it, but letting her rest on the way too. After they arrive at his place, the dogs greet them both with licks and wags of their tails, happy to see them. Seeming to sense something was wrong, they don't get too excited, but simply stick close, nuzzling hands and following on their heels.

Once inside, Justin lets Beth put her bag in the living room - he'd give her his bed in a heartbeat... if his bedroom was in any shape for anybody but him to see it. As it was though, it was a war zone and he'd prefer she bunk down on the couch, which was still pretty comfortable for sleeping.

Retrieving a sheet and a couple blankets from the hall closet, he joins her in the living room. It was early yet, but he'd let her decide if she wanted to stay up or go to sleep.

"I got some ice cream in the fridge," he offers. "We could watch a movie or something if you want or... if you'd rather call it a night, that's okay too." He kind of hoped she'd want to stay up for a little while - he wasn't tired yet and he'd kind of been looking forward to being able to cuddle up with her for the first time since they'd started dating. But if she wanted to sleep, he'd leave her be.

Jared's head turns quickly to Grace as he looks at her in surprise. Ice cream? She wanted to take him away from here and go do something? Really? He had no idea that a hopeful excitement shot through his gaze.

"We're... not even done," he reasons, still a bit confused. She'd said she wanted to keep working with his legs - they'd hardly done anything at all today yet. She'd chided him for not wanting to do it, and now she was offering to give him a break? Though appealing, it had caught him off guard.

"But if you want to... I mean... I'm sure you've got better things to do today."

His gaze drops again. He really wanted to go. All he'd seen was the hospital, the scenery on the way to his mother's house, and his mother's house. That was it. He didn't remember anything else, and really did want to see more. Go do something. Get out of the confines of the house. And yet... he knew that this wasn't Grace's norm. He knew that she was probably just trying to be nice to him since he'd been grouchy. And he didn't want her to think she needed to do this since she did have a job to do. He was just another client and he didn't want to take advantage of her kindness.

"We can keep working here," he reasons quietly. "I won't complain anymore."

Hunter was so close to dozing off, that he didn't even hear Katie until she speaks. Forcing his eyes open and turning to look up at her, he gives her a drowsy smile. "Nothing's ever free, but I'm not saving it."

Pulling out the chair next to him, he gestures for Katie to sit down. Yawning, he rubs his eye with the heel of his hand. "Good morning, Cupcake."

Ice Cream

Heading out of the living room and into her bed room Beth pulls out her bag and sets it on the bed. As she puts a few items she would need into it she could help it that she mind wondered. Was going to Justin's really a good idea? Was there more to this offer than just not wanting her to be alone? Could she really trust him?

Trying to shake those thoughts from her mind she thought it crazy to even double guess what Justin's motives where. He's had helped her with so many things, and on so many levels, he was just once again trying to help her thought a rough patch.

   "Alright, I think I'm ready."

Coming out into the living room Beth has her bag slung over her shoulders and one of her pillows. She didn't know if she would need them or not but it never hurt to bring one. That was a little bit of home was with her too. She was about ready as she was going to be.

"Nope, I could get tired of eating the same thing everyday, or watching the same movie every day but not you. You always surprise me with something new. "

Giving a smile and not taking her eyes off Jared she could read him pretty clean. Today he was not really feeling this and his hope and willpower was starting to dwindle. That was the last thing Grace wanted to happen and she had to think of something quick before he went into a down ward spiral.

"How would you like to go for an adventure. I saw an ice cream shop on my way up here and I think for today you have done pretty good. Might be nice to get away and just have a little fun too. All work and no play right?"

Graces eyes give a little sparkle. It wasn't something amazing but it might put a little spark back into Jared. Ice cream made everyone feel better no matter what was wrong. It would be time away, doing something and not just working on his legs. Maybe going about this whole thing would be different with Jared. She might have just to think of different ways to make this more fun.

Entering the dinning hall and seeing Hunter at one of the far tables Katie can't help but smile. She wondered if Justin was getting use to the early hours or if it was determination to not let her Uncles get the best of him that made him wake early.

Going into the kitchen and grabbing a bagel along with a cup of coffee she returns to Hunters table. Setting her stuff down she clears her throat a little bit as her eyes give a little dance. Every morning just seemed to get better and better. Standing there for a long moment just watching Hunter with his eyes closed Katie finally speeks.

"So is this seat free or are you saving it for someone?"

A Peg or Two

"If I minded, I wouldn't have asked." Justin assures.

Watching Beth closely, he really couldn't tell yet how much of an impact this evening had had on her. He wished he could, but he also knew it might take several days for him to really be able to see how this had affected her.

He gives her arm a pat and nods. "Pack whatever you need. Take your time."

Only after she's left the room does he stand up to pace in small circles. Was this really such a good idea? Was it even appropriate? Not that he would change his mind - he'd already invited Beth and wouldn't go back on his word. But... had it really been wise? Not that anything bad would happen - he wouldn't have asked her over had she not been so upset, and he wasn't about to make a habit out of it. So surely it was okay and...

Shaking his head, Justin stops himself from thinking any more. No matter what anyone else would think, Beth needed company tonight, and he was it. He wasn't going to leave her alone, and that was that. It would be just fine.

Taking a seat on the couch armrest, he waits.

Jay laughs and nods at his sister. "I promise I'll bring everybody and you can spoil them rotten."

Hugging Annie, Jay was glad that even she seemed happy he was here and planning to be around more. "I think you're right... there's just something special about this place."

Looking around at the others, all wore smiles and it made his heart warm. "Thanks, guys... this means a lot to me."

"Means a lot to us too." Mick slips an arm around Rosetta's shoulders, giving her a squeeze. "If anything bad happens because you're associating with us again... we've got your back, and that's a promise."

The group stuck around and chatted for a little while longer, but slowly they began to disperse, heading to their own places for the night. Mick retrieves a sleepy BJ from Becky, carrying him to the house, even though he was getting too big to be carried. Once he was put to the bed, Mick found himself relaxed on the couch with Rosetta where they talked about Jay and the family until they were finally too tired to stay awake anymore. The rest of the ranch also gradually grew quiet, crickets lulling the night away.

It was a dark river, churning and raging like an angry living creature. It crashed around jagged rocks, and tore at the banks - even its froth had lost its pure whiteness.

Plunged without warning into the rushing water, it was a bitter cold temperature, surging over Hunter and pulling him down, down, down. It was as black as night, creating a fear that raced through his veins. Heart racing, his legs fought against the current but to no avail. His hands groped at the water, but it was a useless effort. His lungs burned in his chest, begging him for oxygen and every muscle tensed under the weight of an invisible force.

Fighting and clawing, panic raced through Hunter's veins. Why was he here? What was happening? Was he going to drown?

The river carried him mercilessly on its deadly course, treating his body as though it were only a lost piece of driftwood, destined to be snapped in two on one of the protruding boulders.

Caught in a sudden swirling vortex, Hunter feels himself slammed to the river bottom, pinned down by the menacing current. He had to breathe. He needed air. Excruciating pain washed over his entire body and he screamed out in terror. But as he does, the black water surges into his lungs, bringing with it, death.

Sitting bolt upright in bed, Hunter wasn't sure if he'd just really screamed or not. He was drenched in sweat, his heart racing and his hands shaking. He couldn't remember a nightmare so vivid and horrible. It was just like the one he'd had when he'd dozed off in the pasture with Katie the other day, except this time it was as if he had experienced the full version. And it was terrifying.

Standing on wobbly legs, Hunter goes to the bathroom to splash some water on his face. Staring at himself in the mirror, he wonders at the fear still lingering in his eyes. Maybe he'd just had too much stress lately. Or maybe it was something he ate for supper. Regardless, he never wanted to experience this again.

Trying to go back to sleep was futile, and as the sun rose a couple hours later, Hunter found himself one of the first people in the dining hall - evident by the full coffee pot. Pouring himself a cup, he wanders into the other room to find an empty table near the window. Easing down, he rubs his hands over his face, feeling exhausted. Finally taking a sip of the black coffee, he hopes it will help wake him up. Not only was he tired, but his legs were incredibly sore after yesterday's experience with Bonzai. He wouldn't let it show though... not if he could help it.

Taking another sip of coffee, he closes his eyes and just sits. But even then, the nightmarish images returned to his mind.

Grace's reprimand might have been gentle, but it was still a reprimand, leaving Jared feeling like a little boy who had just been chided for his behavior. He hadn't meant to take out his frustrating on her, he just... well it was... he didn't know to...

Trying to figure it out was useless. It seemed like his legs weren't the only things that weren't working anymore. Seemed like his mind and heart weren't doing so well either.

Letting the matter drop, he's glad at least that she's willing to let him sit in the grass, and he manages a smile - though small - at her joke. With her help, he gets out of the chair and to the ground, mostly by her strength and not his. He was just happy they hadn't toppled over again. Either he was improving or Grace was just better prepared. He had a feeling it was the latter.

Sitting in the grass, Jared lets his back slouch, his hands in his lap. Her question just brings a shrug. "I dunno. I mean yeah."

He sighs and plucks a blade of grass to fiddle with, his eyes remaining downcast. He'd felt happy when Grace had arrived and now it felt like he was living in a storm cloud. Grace's words had knocked him down a peg or two and he wasn't really sure how to act now. He felt frustrated... angry... but had no one to talk to about it. He was trying so hard, yet his determination was starting to fade. He was tired. Lonely. Bored. How much longer was he going to be like this? Would it ever end? Grace was just an easy target for his frustrations since he didn't see anybody else.

Giving her a sidelong glance, he manages a faint smile. "I bet you could get tired of me awful quick, huh?"

Small bag

Rolling over on her back and looking up at Justin for a long moment and his offer Beth study's his face. She trusted Justin but it was an odd invitation for him but at the same time it wasn't that odd after what they had just been through. Justin new her pretty good from there friendship that had formed and he must have known she didn't want to be alone tonight.

"Ok, I'll come over as long as you don't mind...to much."

Sitting up Beth just sits on the edge of the couch for several minutes before looking to Justin again. Her eyes held so many emotions. She was trying to be strong, she was trying so hard, but it was just that hard. One step forward and a few behind would Justin still want to be with her?

"Let me go pack a small bag and I'll be right back...ok?"

Giving Jay a pat on the back and letting her smile grow even more Rosetta looks around the room at everyone and just takes everything in. It was really great to see the whole family together again and Rosetta wouldn't change this moment for the world. Its been something she had been waiting for, for a long time.

"You better bring the family soon. I want to meet those kids of yours and spoil them like an Aunt should."

Standing again as well Anne comes over to Jay and gives him her own hug before taking a step back. She wasn't as close to him as the other were since she was on the road a lot but she'd still had met him once and would like to get to know him more. Just as the other would all over again.

"Glad to have you back. There is no place like home for sure, and even those who deny it...this will always be home."

"You're not being told what to do, I am offering my help to you in trying to get you to walk again. If you don't want to do this than tell me and I wont wast my time trying to help you. We can just sit here all day, and I can push you around, and help you in and out of bed. Would you like that better?"

Grace's voice was stern but soft at the same time. There was no anger or frustration in her eyes of face only the yurning to help. But this was Jared's choose and she wasn't going to have him act like it wasn't. He might think he was helpless here but he wasn't.

Hearing his comment about sitting in the grass Grace gives a nod. She didn't mind sitting in the grass it was warm and she herself liked the feel of it. Holding out her hand for Jared to take Grace helps him giving him a little extra support knowing his legs were sore for there activity this morning.

"If you fall on me again thats ok at least you good looking and not five hundred pounds."

Finally getting Jared settled into the grass Grace gives a smile. She enjoyed spending time with him even when he was being snippy. It didn't bother her much and she new it was just part of the process of everything that was going on with him. So taking it with a grain aslat was the best thing she could do. It wasn't her he was made at only the situation.

"Alright, now that we are a little more comfortable...ready to continue or not yet?"

Jared quirks one eyebrow, just glad for the short reprieve as they talked. "Okay with me? It never matters what's okay with me. I'm just the invalid being told what to do, ya know."

Catching Grace's hand before she can reach his other leg, he stops her. "Can we at least sit in the grass?" His tone had softened as his request was genuine. "I promise not to knock you over this time."

Jay returns Rosetta's hug warmly, closing his eyes for a moment. He was relieved to have all of that off his chest, and even more relieved at the acceptance offered. Pulling back, he smiles at his sister. "Thanks... I've missed you too."

He turns to the others again. "And the rest of you, I guess."

Eric smirks and throws a wadded-up napkin at him. "I suppose we've missed you too. Sort of."

Jay rolls his eyes. "Well, thanks a lot."

Grinning, Mick stands up, offering Jay a handshake then a hug too. "You know you're welcome here anytime and all the time, right?"

"Yeah... I know."

"Gonna stick around?" Sparky questions.

"Um... for few days. Then I want to get my family out here real soon."

Justin doesn't mind when Beth lies down next to him or takes his hand. With his other hand, he strokes her hair gently. "You have absolutely nothing to be sorry about," he chides softly. "Besides, I was the one who suggested it, remember?"

Sighing, he leans his head back and closes his eyes, his fingers still running through her hair. "Who knows why tonight... things just... happen sometimes and we just happened to get caught in the middle."

His hand gives hers a squeeze. "But we're safe now and it's all over."

Falling silent for a few more minutes he eventually opens his eyes again and looks down at her, feeling rather helpless. He knew what to do in many situations, but there were always so many variables that even he didn't have all the answers. "You wanna come home with me tonight?" He'd never suggest that on a normal night, but he couldn't stay here and if she didn't want to be alone, he wouldn't leave her without options.

Already have

Being at the hospital Beth didn't like it but having Justin next to her made everything go quickly. Trying to remember everything that happened Beth wasn't much help as she tried to block it out but she tried all she could. Her head was hurting, she just wanted to go home and was all to happy when the time came.

Sitting in the truck and holding Justin's hand Beth was quiet. Her head leaning back against the seat and her eyes closed. Her head pounded and her body ached. She was thankful though that Justin was staying with her. At the moment she didn't want to spend the time alone.

Getting to the house and going inside Beth sets her purse down at the table. Watching Justin go over to the couch she just eyes him for a moment before following and sinking down next to him. Moving on the couch a little she repositions herself so she can lay her head in Justin's lap and hold his hand at the same time. She had so many emotions going on inside her right now it was really hard to land on one.

"Why tonight? Why there? We were having such a good time too. I'm...I'm sorry I picked that place Justin."

Seeing the splinter on Hunter's hands Katie can't help but cringe a little bit. She new all to well how that felt and how sore his hands would be in the morning. Repairing fences was a must but it was dangerous work as well. Hearing that he enjoyed it though Katie was happy and it made her smile.

Dinner came and went all to quickly and Katie new Hunter had, had a long day and she couldn't keep him up any longer. She would see him tomorrow and that was important to her. He needed to be rested for work and whatever else would be thrown there way.

"Have a good night Hunter. I'll see you tomorrow for sure."

Returning the hug and squeeze of the hand Katie smiles up at Hunter. She would stay here and play cards for a little bit but than she would be hitting the bed herself.

Listing to her brother and feeling Mick's squeeze on her hand Rosetta looks to him and smiles before looking back to Jay. He was bearing everything right here, right now and he was leaving nothing unturned. Justin continuing to listen Rosetta could feel some tears rising in her eyes. She'd missed her brother, the only part of the clan that wasn't with them and nieces she never new to know he was going to try and come around more it made her so happy.

"Jay, I think I can speak for us all when we say no sorry is needed. We forgave you along time ago and simply put now missed having you and your family around."

Standing and going over to her brother Rosetta gives a smile before extending her arms and warping them around him. She could see the change in him, she could see God's light and for that she was proud. For many other reasons as well her was proud of her brother. And he was home, he was finally home and would be here more. It was a dream come true.

"Welcome home Jay, we missed you!"

Working with Jared Grace goes slow knowing that this was a painful process and as painful as it was it was a good thing too. Pain meant Jared's nerves were still working like they should be they just had to wake his legs up.

Continuing as seeing the pain all over his face along with the looks that could kill she ignores them. His fists slamming down on the rests of the chair don't even make her jump. She'd seen worse and thats what she would always remember. This...this was only the start and if she couldn't hack this she might as well go now.

"Kick me, and I might have to use a little reverse force on you."

Grace's own eyes give a little sparkle though her voice was stern almost as a warning that maybe she could use it if she had too. Her cheeks flush a little bit as his comment about her being pretty though she makes no comment about it.

"Alright, now we do the other leg, than we ice them, doing it again, heat, ice, and than we can relax a little. Sound ok to you?"

Rest

Justin was very glad that Beth agreed to go to the hospital. He hadn't wanted to argue with her and make things worse. At least she was doing her best and willing to walk through this, despite how frightening it all was.

"Thatagirl." Justin gives her an extra squeeze. "I'll see if they'll let me drive you so you don't have to ride in an ambulance. You'll just have to keep this pack on your head good and tight, okay?"

Things after that were a bit of a blur. Insisting on driving Beth to the hospital himself, they were escorted by a police cruiser, and once there, also escorted inside. Several times, Justin had to argue with doctors, refusing to leave Beth - to the point that the policeman finally told the nurses to back off too. It was obvious that Beth needed Justin's presence and the policeman knew that if he was going to get any more information from them, the nurses and doctors had better keep peace, rules or not.

After Beth's cut was cleaned, stitched up and bandaged, the officer asked them several questions about the robbery. Justin was one of the few from the restaurant who could give anywhere near an accurate description of the robber - something the policeman was grateful for.

Once the ordeal was over, Justin took Beth back out to his truck to drive her home, holding her hand the whole way...

..."Alright, here we go." Justin enters the apartment with her. As relieved as she must be to finally be home, he was also. It was over. This whole thing was over. And yet... he knew that it would take a while for Beth to get over it. He feared this would set her back - how far though, he didn't know. It would set anybody back... that was normal. The only thing he couldn't predict was how long it would take her to bounce back, or if him trying to help would actually help or hinder.

Walking slowly to the living room, Justin eases down on the couch and pats the cushion next to him. She was still in her dress and he was still in his nicer clothes, but it didn't seem to matter. Right now, he just wanted Beth to be able to sit and rest.

Hunter smirks, giving Katie's foot a return tap under the table. "Nah, they treated me alright. 'Cept for those splinters..." He turns his palm over and squints at several places where he'd received splinters from fence posts.

"Work went okay though - I actually enjoyed it. Mostly helped Mick on the fence." Despite being sore, he really had enjoyed it. He knew he was trying to prove something too, but aside from that, it was the truth that he liked the physical work...and the time away from an idle mind that liked to wander.

Supper was enjoyed and Hunter found himself amidst chatter and laughter with Katie, carrying on various conversations with Clint, Mick or Jim mostly. It was a fun time...a family time. A time that maybe if Hunter stopped to think about it long enough, he would see it as something he'd missed out on... something he wished he had more of.

Once the meal was over though, despite being invited to help with a few more chores and/or play a game of cards, he had to decline. He was utterly exhausted from the long day and knew that he'd be no good the next day if he didn't go to bed early. It cut out some time with Katie but... maybe he could make up for it the next day. A squeeze of the hand and a hug goodnight was as good as it would get for now.

Back in the dining room though, the lights remained on late into the evening. And even those who usually went home by now, had stayed behind until there were nine people gathered - the result of Jay's request. It was him, Rosetta, Eric, Trent, Jeff, Sparky, Jim, Annie and Mick.

Standing near the group that was seated, Jay felt awkward, but he'd been thinking all day about this...

"Um... I guess I just wanted us alone 'cause what I've got to say really applies mostly just to you guys." Pacing a little, he mulls over the words he wants to use. Finally he grabs a chair and straddles it backward to look at everybody else. It had been a very long time since he'd seen all these eyes at one place.

"Years ago... when I first met you all and realized I was a part of something bigger, it scared me... a lot. I already had a pretty settled life, I was married, I was staring a family, and I had a good relationship with my brother Jeff."

Jeff glances down for a moment, remembering the past. He'd been sick most of the time, but there had been good times with his brother, too. Especially later when he'd interacted with his nieces.

Jay clears his throat and continues. "When I found out about the Agency, I was more scared than stubborn. You all had already been fighting them for a while and had a handle on things. You all had skills that I never did - you could take anybody down and you'd taught yourselves how to fight and handle guns and shoot if need be. Me..." He shrugs. "I just owned a dog kennel and was trying to live a normal life. And when I did involve myself in the fight for a short while, I got even more scared. The Agency was too big for me. I loved you all, but I just didn't have the guts you did. I was intimidated most of the time."

Sighing, he shakes his head. "And... for a while, keeping my distance didn't bother me. I thought ignoring the issue would make me feel better. I thought it would be safer for me and my family. So I stayed away. Oh, you know I stayed in touch with phone calls or emails or whatever but... in reality, I really didn't want to have much to do with you guys." He was ashamed to admit it.

"Then when my wife and baby died..." He swallows hard. It had been a long time now, but it still stirred his emotions. "I realized that I was not immune to tragedy. Whether by the hands of the Agency or not. I realized that avoiding the fight didn't mean nothing bad would happen. My loss, fear and guilt for rejecting you all in some way, shape or form made me into a bitter person. I didn't like myself. I struggled with my kids - I just about lost Katie."

Jeff catches his brother's eye, knowing all too well that situation. He'd watched from a distance as his daughter had traveled down a very risky path, unable to do anything but pray.

Jay purses his lips grimly. "I thought finding a new wife would solve my problems. So I married again - probably too quickly. I wanted another chance at the child I'd lost so we decided to get pregnant right away. That was probably another mistake, although I wouldn't trade Josh for the world." He shakes his head again. "I didn't talk about it much, but you all probably figured out that Jessica and I had problems. We fought a lot. We talked of divorce more than once. I neglected my kids and Katie moved out here, feeling rejected. The thing is..." He gives a light scoff at himself. "She was right. I had rejected her. And her sister. And the rest of you."

He bounces his leg nervously but knows he needs to continue. So taking a deep breath, he does. "It took a few years, but Jessica and I started to work things out. We'd always held fast to our Christianity - but... we weren't really living it. By the grace of God, we realized it, and realized we both needed to get back on track. So... we started working towards that. And when we got ourselves right with God again, our marriage started improving too, as did my relationship with the kids."

He sighs again "Problem was... every day I felt just a little more guilty for ignoring that one missing piece of me: you guys. I had chosen to stay away because I considered it safer for my family and I know that all of you accepted and respected my choice. For that, I thank you. But... while I don't think I was wrong for that choice, I began to realize again that just because I wasn't on the battle line, that still didn't mean I wouldn't have any trouble - that had already been proven. I knew I could offer assistance and didn't. More so than that though, I was distancing myself from people who wanted to get to know me... love me... have me be a part of their lives. I was... denying all of you your brother."

Jay takes a moment to get his thoughts back on track again. "My daughters are grown now. One's out of the house and the other is still at home but on her way out. Josh still has a few years left but he's getting to the age where he can understand reality. And... each day I think of all you. Just because I wasn't in touch didn't mean you weren't on my mind. And, um..." He shrugs. "I guess what I'm trying to say is... I had my reasons for staying away. And I'm grateful to all of you for accepting that. I don't blame myself for my choices and I'm glad that I was able to protect my kids for a while at least. God gave me the opportunity to grow... to change... and I feel He guided me down the path I took. He gave me my kids - they're my responsibility that I take seriously. However... today is not the same as yesterday. This is not twenty years ago. It's today. And today... things are different. I'm different. Circumstances are different. And... I want to know my family."

Mick quietly gives Rosetta's hand a squeeze, hoping she was as happy as he was to be hearing all of this. Jay was exposing his heart to all of them - something he had never done before.

"I'm not sure what this means for me or the rest of you," Jay continues. "And I'm still scared of the Agency. More than once, I've considered myself a coward. I'm not telling you all this because I want to stand against them or go to war. I'm here because I want to see you. I want to get to know you and have you get to know me. As I am today. Not as the man you knew before. My wife and daughters know that just by coming here, I have endangered them. But they all are standing behind me and all agree that the risk is worth it if we gain back our family. Josh has heard about all you but doesn't even know you and he wants to. He doesn't understand the risks, although he knows bits and pieces about the Agency. God gave me the opportunity to shelter my family. And I believe He's giving me the opportunity now to leave that shelter and experience life in a new light. Staying away before wasn't wrong. But neither is changing paths now."

Making eye contact with the others in the room, he's not sure what else to say. "I guess I want to say I'm sorry... I'm sorry that my choices robbed you of part of your family, and I'm very sorry for some of my past actions or the way I treated some of you. I've always loved all of you and I apologize for not backing you up when you maybe needed me. If given the chance, I don't know what I would change or choose differently. Maybe nothing. But for today... I'm here. It's been too long. And... I want to see you all more often. And I want my family to know you too. So... if you can accept me back into the clan... I'll try to be the brother... the man God wants me to be."

Sighing, Jared wished they could just sit and talk, but he knew they couldn't. Grace was here for her job and nothing more. "Yeah, okay."

It wasn't so bad moving his toes around and even his ankles a little bit. But once they got further up his legs, it started getting difficult. Able to stay seated in the wheelchair, his hands grip the armrests until his knuckles were white. It felt as though his nerves were going haywire as he tried to move his own legs, and his lower back screamed at him to stop.

Gritting his teeth, sweat forms on his brow. He knew he had to keep trying. He knew he had to remain strong. But it was just so frustrating. One more rotation and it felt as though an electrical shot traveled through his leg and up his spine. It was enough of a jolt to make him jump. Slamming his fist down on the armrest, his eyes travel away from Grace so his glare is aimed at the oak tree instead. It wasn't her fault. He wouldn't snap at her.... he wouldn't... he wouldn't....

Taking several deep breaths, he finally gives Grace a sidelong glance. "One of these days I'm gonna wind up kicking you and just blaming it on overactive nerve endings." His eyes narrow slightly, though a little bit of humor shone through. "Then again... I'd hate to kick something as pretty as you."

Movement

Looking up at Justin Beth gives a sniff trying to stop from crying. Be strong she told herself, be strong for him. Justin had been there for her more than once, he had helped her become strong, Beth was a better person because of Justin the least she could do now was try and continue to be strong.

"Ok, I'll come with your to the hospital but can we drive? I'd like that better."

Letting out a long sigh and flicking some of her tears away. Beth wished she was much stronger and she didn't have to cry, she wish the fear that coursed through her vains would subside now that everything was ok. She was alive and that was a big plus but she couldn't help the fear that made her wonder if it would happen again.

The afternoon went buy pretty fast enough though there wasn't really much time before starting the work in the barns and dinner it still seemed to go in almost a snap of the fingers.  Exiting the barn and taking her work gloves off Katie looks around. Not seeing Hunter anywhere she wondered what kind of tastes her Uncles had him up to now.

Heading to the bunk house to shower and change out of her dirty cloths Katie makes a quick job of it. Just leaving her hair down for now to air dry she makes her way to the mess hall to wait for Hunter.

It's not long finding a place for them both and sitting down that Hunter comes in the door. Feeling Hunter bump her shoulder and than her comment to follow Katie can't help the grin that spreads across her lips. Even the smallest hello would be enough for Katie to smile. Just something about Hunter had that affect on her.

"I though for sure my Uncles took you out into the woods and either shot you for showing them up, got you lots, or worked you to death."

Giving Hunter's food a tap with her own Katie looks to him her eyes twinkling. It was nice teasing Hunter and knowing he could take it. Than again if he could take her Uncles he could take her with flying colors. Maybe thats where she got her own humor from.

   "How did the work go?"

Giving Jared the support he needed Grace had no problem going slow, or fast. It didn't bother her how much he leaned on her either. It really didn't bother her even if it bothered Jared. It was part of her job and she had seen far worse.

Once he was settled and hearing him talk about wanting to drive on his own Grace gives a laugh. It was not as easy at it looked but she would let him give it a shot. Just watching him with every wall he bumped, every table that was knocked Grace cringed a little bit and laughed along with it. At least he was trying and that did count.

"Alright crazy driver let me take over here before you hurt yourself more. However keep practicing and I might just give you that license."

Pushing Jared the rest of the way outside Grace finds a nice sunny spot for them to sit and work. She sun felt good on her skin and she new Jared liked it too. It was better than being cooped inside only bad part was knowing this was not a social visit but work.

"Alright, so we are going to start to toe and let movement. I want you to start by moving your toes, than using my help we are going to move your lets in circular movements, up and down. While I move them I want you to considerate on moving them. We are going to get those lets to remember how to work...ok?"

Driver's License

"It's okay," Justin continues to soothe, still keeping Beth safe in his arms. The last thing he wanted was to frighten her even more. "I don't like hospitals either, but we need to make sure you're taken care of."

Drawing back slightly to look down into her eyes, his heart broke even more. She looked like a petrified little girl, and it hurt to see her like this. Reaching up one hand, he brushes away some of her tears. "I promise I'll be right beside you the whole time. Can you do it for me? I'll feel a lot better if a doctor can stitch you up. Then we can go home and it'll all be over."

He plants a soft kiss on her cheek before wiping away another tear with his thumb. "You're doing great. I know you can be strong for just a little while longer. Come with me to the hospital... okay?"

Jeff smiles and locks eyes with Rosetta for just a moment. He knew that he had a lot of miserable days and a lot of lonely days too. But he was loved. And understood. And he really couldn't ask for much more. "Okay... see you later then."

Leaving the office, he heads straight to his bunkhouse where he slips off his shoes and sinks down on his bed. He was glad he'd had a little fun with Hunter and Katie, and sure was glad he was home. But just those few activities had completely drained him and he was exhausted. He hadn't realized how such an ordeal with his heart - though relatively minor - could sap his energy like this. But he really was so tired...

Left standing, Hunter watches Katie walk away before finally heading to his own bunkhouse too. His legs really didn't feel like working, but as long as he kept moving, he didn't feel as sore. Tonight he'd take another hot shower and that should help. After the big deal everyone had made earlier, he wasn't about to act as though he was all that sore. Whether necessary or not, he was going to prove he could handle it.

Soon he met up with Katie again, ready to work. Though supper was going to be soon, it still left enough time for Mick to snatch Hunter away to help with fixing one of the corral gates then hauling a bunch of fence posts out to the back pasture to begin extending the fenceline. By the time that work was done, Hunter was ready to call it a day - though he wouldn't say so. He didn't see hide nor hair of Katie until supper when he finally found her inside saving him a seat...

Easing down next to her, he bumps her shoulder playfully. "Hello, stranger."

Back in the corner, Dylan is bent over several school books. He was sweaty and dirty from working outside and in the barn all day but hadn't had time to take a shower. Sitting alone in the corner was probably the best place for him to be because of it too.

Turning another page, his eyes focus on the words as he tries to retain the information. He'd already worked several hours earlier today but it wasn't enough - he was still playing catch-up, and so badly wanted to not get behind any more. If he could read enough chapters by tonight, he could take three tests tomorrow and get those over with. So far his grades were good enough that he didn't need a whole lot of tutoring from Rosetta but... just barely. He knew Mick wished he would have more As than Cs, but he just couldn't focus and do that well especially when he was working in the barn so much too. Maybe on these next set of tests he could at least get Bs? It was worth a try.

Glancing up as someone else enters the dining room, he watches Hunter go sit with Katie. Not surprising. Did anyone else find those two obvious, or was it just Dylan that noticed? He wasn't sure.

Looking back down to his book, his stomach growls. One more chapter, then he could eat. Just one more chapter...

Jared's lips twitch as he grins. "Don't tempt me. I might take all day to get in that chair if you're gonna have your arms around me."

Taking a deep breath, he brings himself closer to the edge of the bed and eyes the wheelchair for several moments, trying to figure out how to do this. He knew Grace could direct him on the best route, but he also knew that she was going to let him do as much on his own as he could. He needed to be able to do some things on his own, especially if he was going to be using a wheelchair for a while. He couldn't be dependent on others for everything all the time.

Using his hands, he moves his legs over the bed where they dangled rather lifelessly. He wriggles is toes a little though just to reassure himself that he still could. Looking to the chair again he then glances up to Grace. Did she know that this was kind of frightening to him?

Mustering up his courage, he leans off the bed and sets a hand on the chair's armrest to hold his weight. It took a bit of doing, and he did need Grace's help so he wouldn't fall face-first to the floor a couple times, but finally he's sitting in the wheelchair. Out of breath and in pain, he shakes his head. "Either I'm gonna have to walk again, or I'm gonna have to learn how to do this better - there's gotta be an easier way."

Starting to be pushed forward, he reaches down and stops the wheels with his hands. "It's not right that every time we go out, you have to do the driving." Leaning his head back so he can look up at Grace, a new grin creases his lips. "Let's see if I can earn my driver's license."

It isn't easy... and a few walls and doorways were bumped and banged, but Jared does manage to get himself most of the way to the back door before his arms were just too tired to keep trying so he lets Grace take him the rest of the way. Once outside, he feels the warmth of the sun, just soaking it in. "Mm... this is nice." What he really wanted was to just sit and enjoy the outside with Grace. But he knew that she was here to do a job. He knew it was going to hurt and he wasn't looking forward to it.

Hospitals

Feeling Justin's arms around her Beth bury her face into his chest as she continues to sob. Her head hurt so bad and keeping her eyes open felt like they might pop out of her head but feeling Justin's arms around her just made her feel relaxed and safe. She new in his arms everything would be alright.

Having Justin put the ice pack on her head Beth gives a little wince but doesn't fight against it. She new the wound would more than likely swell and it was best to try and keep that down. She didn't know how bad it really was but she could only figure it was bad enough.

   "Justin...you saved me...thank...thank you."

Hearing the sirens in the background Beth continues to stay close to Justin not looking around at much but just soaking up his comfort. Hearing about going to the hospital though she tenses a little bit. She hated hospitals more than anything. She was able to visit Jared with Justin but that took all the will she had knowing she was going for herself was something completely different.

"I'm ok...I don't need to go...go to the hospital. Can we just got home...please Justin?"

Beth looks up at Justin her eyes pleading. She really didn't want to go, she would be ok. Just slap a butter fly bandage on it and she'd survive. Maybe with a little scar, but she had a feeling even with stitches she might have one of those anyways.

   "I don't like hospitals."

Giving a chuckle and a smile to Jeff Rosetta nods. She understood what her brother was saying all to well. When it came to hospitals home was all to welcoming once again. She was happy Jeff was finally home though and happy to see he was at least in semi decent spirits.

"Alright I will see you at dinner. Get some rest, we aren't going anywhere for a while."

Giving a smile and a nod Katie didn't mind spending more time in the barn. She liked it there and liked the smells. It was a great workout for her too, to keep her in shape so hearing Hunter wanted to do that she didn't mind at all.

"Yeah I should change into some work cloths too and put my hair up so I don't sweat my butt off. I'll see you in ten."

Just holding Hunter's hand for a second longer Katie finally gives it a little squeeze before letting go and turning to head to her bunk and great ready for some work.

Seeing Jared smile, and his eyes light up even if it was a little bit Grace was pleased. Keeping that up, and keeping him positive was important even if it was slightly, or in a smarty pants kinda way. She'd seen many people fail in there recovery because they couldn't keep there spirits up. This time around there was no failing though, she refused to let Jared give up.

"Ok, good outside it is than."

Setting her bag down and grabbing Jared's wheelchair Grace brings it closer to the bed and puts the breaks on. She had very little worry about helping Jared. She was stronger than she looked and most of it was in her arms. She had to be to be able to help people.

"Alright this is how its going to go down. Try your best to move on your own. I know it will be hard and I know there will be pain but I am going to be holding you so you wont fall. If you have to lean all you weight on me than thats alright. Go as slow as you need I'm in no hurry and hey the slowly you go the longer you get to be close to me right?"

7/17/12

I'm right here...

Relief wasn't half of what Justin felt as the man accepts the money and bolts from the restaurant. He may have succeeded in robbery, but it was a cheap price to pay for Beth's safety.

Seeing her fall, Justin immediately slides down on the floor next to her before he sees the blood running down from the cut on her head. "Somebody get a clean towel and some ice," he orders. Glancing up, he sees no one moving and he throws several people a glare that could kill. "Now!"

Finally as someone obeys, he puts his attention back to Beth. Wrapping his arms around her, he pulls her close to him, pressing one hand firmly to the wound on her head. "Shh... shh.. it's okay... you're okay, Beth. You're safe. I'm right here."

Rocking her slightly, he closes his eyes, feeling the adrenaline still surging through his veins. He couldn't remember a time he'd been so scared. Thank you, God.

Not letting Beth go, Justin tries to comfort her and calm her down. He couldn't imagine how frightened she must have been. He kisses the top of her head and rubs her arm gently, still hugging her close. "Shhh..."

Feeling a hand on his shoulder, he looks up quickly to see one of the Mexican cooks with a dishtowel wrapped around some ice. Giving the dark man a grateful nod, Justin accepts the makeshift icepack and presses it gently to the gash on Beth's head. "Just relax," he coaxes. "It's gonna be alright. It's all over."

The wail of a siren is suddenly heard and Justin is even more relieved the law was finally here. There was no chance the robber would try to come back here for shelter now. "The police are here," he comforts Beth softly. "Everything's okay."

For a few minutes, the commotion in the restaurant picks up as people clamor to try and explain to the police officers what had happened. Justin remains on the floor with Beth, ignoring it all until one of the officers kneels down next to them.

"Is she hurt badly?"

Justin shakes his head. "The guy had her at gunpoint then shoved her into the counter. She hit her head on the way down." He lifts the ice for a moment so the policeman could see.

The man grimaces. "Looks like she might need some stitches. Let me call for an ambulance just to be on the safe side, then we can get a statement at the hospital." Standing, he converses with a fellow officer who makes the call.

Justin rocks Beth a little more, knowing that this whole ordeal was not going to be easy for her to forget. "We're gonna go to the hospital," he explains gently, "so we can make sure this cut is taken care of. I'm not going to leave you though - I'll be with you the whole time, okay?"

Jeff smiles and returns Rosetta's hug, giving a soft chuckle. "Well, I'm just as glad to be back here. Dinners weren't the same at the hospital, period." He rolls his eyes.

Sighing, he looks around for a moment, then shrugs. "Guess I'll go hang out in my bunk for a while 'til supper. I'm pretty tired."

Hunter glances down at Katie's fingers on his arm and he grins. Taking her hand, he plays with her fingers. "Mmm... a walk sounds nice. But I have a feeling I'll get more points if I help out in the barn. I gotta change clothes though... meet you in the barn in ten minutes?"

Hearing someone coming down the hall, Jared cocks his head to listen. Seeing Grace enter the room, he immediately smiles. Her presence alone broke up the monotony of such a boring day.

"I'm doing okay," he responds, shrugging. As okay as he could be, anyway.

The suggestion of going outside makes his eyes light up a little more. "That... sounds like fun. I mean hey, if I'm gonna be in pain, I might as well enjoy the scenery while I'm at it, right?"

His grin evolves into one of slyness, implying that he wasn't just talking about the scenery of the backyard itself. Pulling back his blanket, he looks down at his immobile legs and sighs. At least he could wear comfy sweat pants and a t-shirt now that he was out of the hospital. Not that it helped much.

Managing to sit up straight, he eyes the nearby wheelchair. There were no nurses to help out here... it was just him and Grace to get this done now.

Cry

Beth's eyes stay on Justin as she watches him, listens in this moment she was scared out of her mind but something about his voice it seemed soothing. As Justin moves around the room a little bit Beth can feel the barrel of the gun press against her head a little harder and she tenses. No...this was not how she wanted to go out, not like her parents, not to be shot in cold blood, she couldn't she couldn't leave her sister when everyone else had, and Justin how could she leave him now when they had just started there adventure together.

Whimpering Beth can't help the tears that rolled down her cheek as she closed her eyes. She didn't want to see anything else, she didn't want to think about anything else she just wanted this moment to be over. This was a nightmare, something she hadn't expected. Was it because she had let her guard down? Could this have been avoided?

Still holding the woman the robbers eyes followed Justin there piercing gaze following every movement just waiting for him to try something stupid. Why he was doing this, why this other man was risking his life for a girl could only mean they must be connected. But the robber couldn't be all to weary.

As the money is held out to him the robber just looks at it before looking to Justin and than looking to the money again. Giving Beth a strong push forward the robber grabs the money before turning to leave about as quick as he came.

Being pushed forward Beth didn't have time to react as she falls into the counter and hits her head against the side. Feeling the extremely sharp pain she lets out a wail before bringing her legs to her chest and just holding them. Tears steaming out of her eyes...pain from her head, pain from what happens, and pain from memories she did not want to think about.

If other tried to help her it went unnoticed by Beth...the only person she wanted was Justin, and to go home to the safety of her house. The warm wet feeling of blood that dripped down the side of her face was the least of her worrys. She didn't want to be here, she didn't want to be alone, Justin...where was Justin.

   "Justin...."

Beth cried out as she trembled. Her eyes were squeezed shut tight as she just tried to black everything out. This was not his fault, she would not take it out on him she just wanted his comfort now, she wanted to know someone was close, and that he cared!

Box of Rocks

Watching Beth try her food for the first time, Justin just smiles. She'd had so many experiences... had lived on her own, survived in the world and a traumatic past.... yet had still remained so sheltered as well. It was an interesting combination - one that was fascinating to Justin's mind.

Eating his own fajitas, he enjoys it very much. It was a good little restaurant with tasty food. He might have to come back here again sometime, and if Beth liked it, maybe this could be one of their places to fall back on if they couldn't think of anything else to do.

Chatting while they ate, Justin thoroughly enjoys himself. It was as if finally the barriers were gone and he was more relaxed than he had been in a long time. It was different, not worrying about giving the wrong impressions or being leery about being affectionate... but he liked it. It wasn't something new to him, but knowing it was to Beth, he took things slow and felt happy just watching her enjoy herself.

As she leaves to use the restroom, Justin leans back in his seat and sighs with content. He had eaten too much, but it really had tasted good. Maybe Beth would take a walk with him or something so he could walk off some of the food.

Paying little attention to who was coming and going, when someone screams, Justin gives a jump. Looking quickly to the counter, he sees several customers duck and run from the room - a waitress duck down behind the counter, and someone else go for a phone but stop as a gun is brandished. For a moment, it felt like a bad cop movie. But it was no movie, and this guy was obviously not acting.

Heart thumping, Justin slowly reaches down to his pocket for his cell phone. Come on, girl, he thinks to the whimpering waitress. Just give him what he wants.

Dialing 911, Justin leaves his cell phone on the seat beside him, letting the call go through but not daring to speak, lest the robber see him. If they could just give him what he wanted and get him to leave, everyone would be fine.

"No! You can't do this!"

Justin grits his teeth, thinking how stupid the restaurant manager was. Who would argue with an armed robber? It was ridiculous! The manager was going to get someone killed for surely a small amount of money that was in the cash register.

Then it happens. Seeing Beth, there's not enough time to warn her before she's grabbed and a gun put to her head. Without even thinking, Justin's on his feet in an instant, twenty feet from the scene. Locking eyes with hers, he immediately sees her terror and his gut twists. No... no, this couldn't be happening. Not Beth. Not like this. God, please no

"Aw, come on, man." Justin had no idea where his calm yet perturbed words were coming from. He rolls his eyes and takes one step closer. "Don't pick on a girl - that's lower  than you wanna go."

He removes his eyes from Beth to look at the assailant instead. His heart felt like it would beat right out of his chest and sweat trickles down the back of his neck. His body screamed at him to lunge and yank Beth out of danger - but his mind stopped him, knowing that one wrong move could get them both killed.

"Obviously you just want cash," he reasons, his voice remaining calm, even when there's a shriek from the adjoining room when a woman catches sight of the scene for the first time. "I know you don't want to hurt anybody. If anybody had half a brain, they'd know that you just need some quick cash. We all do. Everybody's out of work, gas prices are through the roof - hey, I'd like some easy money, myself."

Wandering around behind the counter, he gives the manager a good hard warning glare. "How about we open this thing up and just give the cash to him, huh? He deserves it. I mean, look at him. He's got his routine down pat and we don't want him to shoot anybody. Do you know how many customers you'd lose if you let a girl get killed in here? Besides, blood is hard to get out of the carpet."

Shaking, the manager finally does as suggested and opens up the register. Justin gathers up all of the bills he could see and comes back around to the other side of the counter, daring several steps closer to the robber. He holds out the cash. "Here. It's not the lottery, but you've got enough here to combat those gas prices and ridiculous government taxes that are driving us all insane. At least you know how to do your job well - I really am impressed. Not everybody could pull off a job like this."

Justin keeps the money outstretched. "Door's open. If I were you, I'd hightail it before anybody sees what's happening and calls the cops. Take it from me. The police around here are dumber than a box of rocks, but sometimes they get lucky, so you might wanna take advantage of your two-minute window."

Desaster

Looking up at the should of the knock Rosetta gives a smile to Jeff. She new he would be back today and that Hunter and Katie had went to get him. Actually having him back here though was a releaf, and made Rosetta happy. It just didn't seem the same without one of her brothers around.

   "Jeff, Welcome home."

Standing and going over to her brother to give him a strong embrace Rosetta just holds it for a long few seconds. Really happy to see him home Rosetta was thankful her brother would be around a while longer. This had been a close call that scared the crap out of her.

"You're looking much better than the last time I saw you thats for sure. It really is great to gave you home. Wasn't the same without your laughter at dinner."

Coming a little closer to Hunter and laying a hand on his arm Katie gives a smile. She was happy he'd come with her today even though he was sore. It meant a lot to her more than Hunter would ever know.

"See thats the thing about being here its more of a take is as it comes kind of thing, more than a plan your day. As long as chores are done in the morning, and if they need help at night you can."

Letting her fingers walk up Hunter's arm Katie just chuckles finding it humors in her own way but not really knowing why, maybe it was just one of those days.

"We could always take a walk if you want or see if there is work in the barn?"

Looking down at the menu Beth scans everything. She had no idea what any of it was so she had to read each description taking her a little bit longer. Finally thinking maybe she found something the only way she really would know was by trying it.

"I think I am going to try the chicken casadea. It sounds pretty good."

Smiling at Justin and waiting for the waiter to come over Beth keeps the chatter with Justin light. Talking about there days, what they had been up too and how work for both sucked keeping them from spending time with each other. But they both agreed finally being able to get together it felt extra special.

Finally after only waiting a short while there food comes. Looking down at her plate it was bigger than she thought it would be but it looks so yummy Beth was excited to eat it. Taking a bite and chewing she looked up at Justin he eyes slightly wide.

   "This....is....amazing...."

Those were the only words she said as she went in to eat some more. Who could not like this treat. It was chicken, cheese, spices and it was oh so good. Beth thought maybe he found her newest favoret dish to eat.

The night continues on as normal people coming in and out of the restront. It was a busy little place but only in spirts so it wasn't to uncomfortable. Just sitting with Justin at the table dinner was long over but she wasn't ready to go, not yet anyways.

"I'll be right back I just have to run to the restroom."

Getting up and heading to the bathroom Beth wasn't long but she was long enough to have bad timing. Coming back out of the bathroom to join Hunter again she runs smack dab in the middle of a robbery. The music in the bathroom had been louder than out in the dining area so she had no idea till it was to late.

Seeing the opportunity to get the upper hand the robber who was tall and rather broad spotted Beth and in one quick moment he has her in a tight hold his gun pointed at her, his eyes blazing with anger, fear, and determination.

"Give me all the money or I'll shoot the girl. No one try anything heroic either or your goin to have a bigger mess than some missing money."

Not even knowing what happened right away Beth trys to squirm getting away from the gunmen but can't. Feeling the cold steel of the gun on her skin she knows now to struggle anymore as her heart races. Her eyes filled with fear as she finds Justin and her eyes pierces his. A few tears rolled down her cheek as now...now she wished they had just stayed home.

Having her bag and making her way to the door Graces gives a knock. Seeing Jared's mom was the one that opened it she smiles to her and gives her greeting. She as happy that they had come to an understatement on what needed to be done to help Jared and yet would not be to stressful on his mom as well. The last thing Grace wanted to do was put her own health in jeopardy too.

Being pointed in the right direction Grave gives a knock on Jared's door before entering. Seeing him her smile grows slightly as she enters.

"Hey there Jared. How are you today? It's a nice day out again. I was thinking if maybe you wanted to get outside for a little bit we could do what we need to in the back yard and enjoy the sunshine."

Alice's smile grows as she see her friends excitement. It was nice to see everyone so excited and the encouragement they gave each other. It was refreshing and made her get even more excited herself. What seemed so far away, seemed so close it was an odd sensation.

"Ok, good because I'd hate to have to beg."

Just letting her eyes beam Alice couldn't help how excited she was. She'd found love again and felt so content with it. God had been good to her indeed and she couldn't ask for anything more in like than what she had right now.

7/16/12

Lonely

Jeff laughs and nods. "Yeah, that's Beej alright. Poor Rosetta..." Though he did think it was funny. Rosetta could take a lot, but Jeff knew she disliked snakes.

Enjoying a cold treat with Hunter and Katie was very much appreciated, as far as Jeff was concerned. Once they got to the little place and ordered, they were able to sit outside and it felt so much better than a hospital room. Jeff knew he needed to be careful but... he did want to get home and to a regular routine again.

It seemed like in no time they were pulling into the ranch driveway. It probably seemed a shorter trip to Jeff since he'd dozed off several times. But he wasn't going to let his tiredness get the best of him. Getting out of the car, he thanks Hunter and Katie again and says he'll see them at supper. For now though, he heads to the main office.

Knocking before entering, Jeff slips inside to find Rosetta at her desk. "Hey, Sis..."

Outside, Hunter leans  back against the hood of Katie's car and gives her a questioning look. "Guess there's a little while before supper," he muses. "What are your plans?"

"Nothing but a taco?" Justin grins and turns his truck into the Mexican restaurant's parking lot. "We'll have to remedy that. I bet we can find something you'll like."

After parking, Justin waits for Beth to escort her inside, holding the door for her and accepting a booth not far from the door. Getting settled across from her, he scans the menu. "Mm... they have a pretty good variety. I might go for some fajitas..."

It was kind of strange. Being here. It was warm and cozy, yet just as lonely as a hospital room.

Jared lies in bed, staring up at the ceiling. At least the walls weren't stark white and at least the house didn't smell like sterile cleaning substances. But it was still quiet. He was still alone.

Settled in the spare room on the main floor of the house, he could hear his mother working in the kitchen. She came to check on him often - help him, since he couldn't get up out of bed by himself. He'd be embarrassed if he hadn't spent so much time being helped in the hospital. He'd learned to take it in stride, even if it really did bother him. All he wanted at this point was to get to the bathroom and back on his own... even that wasn't possible yet, but he was too well to stay at the hospital any longer.

Apparently Justin had assisted their mother in rearranging furniture in the house so that a wheelchair could get around fairly easily. And last night, Justin had been working on the porch to build a ramp...even though he hadn't come inside to talk to him. Even so, with all this help, Jared felt out of place - like he didn't belong. Even though his mother doted on him and tried to keep him occupied, he was still bored... still lonely. And oddly enough, there was a part of him that missed the number of people passing by at the hospital.

Glancing around the room, he sighs. It was a nice sized room... but everything but the bed and a small nightstand had been moved out to provide room for him, a wheelchair, and whatever Grace needed.

Grace...

Jared's eyes move up to the clock on the wall. Today was the first day Grace would come here for his physical therapy. He was looking forward to seeing her, but not to the therapy. He knew it was good that his legs were feeling more, but the more he felt, the more pain he was in, and it wasn't fun.

A car's engine makes him cock his head to listen, and he wished he could get up and go to the window to see who it was.

Twila looks quickly to Alice, her eyes wide. They'd become pretty good friends after spending so much time together lately, but Twila never would have thought she'd be asked something like this.

"I'd... I'd love to." Her smile spreads from ear to ear. "I mean, I'd like nothing more so yes... of course I will."

Clasping her hands with excitement, her eyes dance. "I'm just so happy for you and Kyle. You both deserve this."

Something new

Getting in the back seat after all the commotion inside Katie wonder how it was her that ended up back there. She didn't mind to horribly much other than she would of rather sat in front with Hunter but her dad deserved to be up there to so she said nothing.

"Awww, You remember the place I like to go. You DO have a good memorie."

Katie gives a little giggle as she pats her dad's shoulder. She was only teasing him all in good fun.  Leaning back and looking out the window Katie lets out a laugh at her dad's command of eating there. She would of guess he'd say that and since it wasn't really anything stressful Katie figured it would be ok. She only hoped this wasn't the start to his same old stubborn habits.

"Wow, I guess I do get my bossiness from you huh?"

As her dad pats her knee Katie brings her hand to his and gives it a squeeze. She was happy her dad was coming home. There she could know it was ok, and monitor what he was doing. Though she would try to give him space it just made her feel better being closer.

"Nah, nothing to exciting except for your brothers picking on poor Hunter. Other than that the ranch had been pretty quiet. BJ found a snake yesterday and it took everything for Rosetta to get him to leave it alone. Finally Wendy bribed him with cookies!"

Exiting the house and locking up Beth continues to hold Justin's hand till she got  into Justin's truck. Taking note to it being a little cleaner and smelling a little nicer Beth gives a smile to herself. She didn't mind Justin's truck at least it got him from point a to point b but the fact he had done his best to clean it made her feel good that he at least tried.

"Mmmm...lets see what am I in the mood for."

Beth watches the building as they pass not sure what she felt like having tonight. Something different...today had a been a day for change why not keep it up and go for something new.

"How about mexican? I've never had anything other than a taco before."

Giggling along with Twila Alice can feel her cheeks go slightly red about the baby's. Alice new how much Kyle wanted a family, and she did too it was something neither of them talked to each other about because they already new they shared a common ground.

"A more solid schedule would be nice for sure at least for a little while till everything gets planned out. Than it can go crazy again."

Alice didn't mind being on the road she rather liked it. But with so many different things coming up and getting ready for some different changes in her life just for at least a year something solid would be ok with her. Just a little less stress.

"Yeah, we have to get the house fixed up a little bit and the outside weeded, and trimmed but we really want to have it there. It's big, and than afterwards we can just have the reception there too. Saves a little bit of trouble."

Scooting a little closer to Twila again and looking down at the book Alice thinks for a moment before looking up at her friend again. It had been such a blessing to find such great people who just seemed to click with Kyle. Alice would give all that credit to God, and it made her so happy to see him so happy and full of life. It made her feel good knowing she got a good group of friends out of it too.

"Hey Twila, would you like to be my maid of honor for the wedding?"
