Introductions

"...So I thought I'd go see her and tell her about Trey."

Reese nods thoughtfully at Jason as they sit in his office the next day. "I know you want your mother to know, and so do I, but do you think-"

"I don't want to wait." Jason had thought about it all night - he needed to tell her. It was only right.

Reese sighs and studies Jason for a moment. "You shouldn't even be here today."

"I'm fine."

"You don't look-"

"I feel fine." Jason rolls his eyes. Yeah, he was tired, and yeah he kinda got dizzy every now and then, but he needed to come back to work. He couldn't stay cooped up another day. "You're changing the subject."

"I guess I am." Reese folds his hands and finally shrugs. "And I guess I can't tell you what to do with your own mother. Just don't spread the word yet around here - for Trey's sake. Okay?"

"Okay."

"You've got your time off - how ever long you need. Katie going with you?"

"Don't know. Haven't talked to her about it yet."

Reese chuckles. "That's a first."

Jason finally grins a little as he stands up. "I'll be in my office if you need me."

Eric slings his arm around Dana and smiles before giving her a quick kiss as they wait at the front door.

She leans into him, but question fills her gaze. "Do you think they'll respond better than the others?"

"I think so." He nods his assurance. "Katie's a sweetheart and Jeff and Trent, well, they get along with most everyb0-" He cuts his sentence short as the door is opened by Ryder. "Hi."

Ryder smiles and opens the door wider. "G'day. I heard you were coming. Come on in."

Stepping into the house, Dana leans closer to Eric, whispering to him. "You didn't tell me he was from Australia. What an adorable accent."

Catching her not-so-quiet comment, Ryder stares at the door for a moment before he shakes his head and closes it. He'd let that one slide.

Walking into the living room hand-in-hand, Eric spots Katie first and gives her a big smile and wave. "Hey, Katie!"

Jeff and Trent both get up from their seats on the couch to greet the newcomers. "Eric. Glad you made it."

"Yeah. It's an easy trip." Quiet for a slightly awkward moment, the tug on his hand reminds him about introductions. "Oh, everybody, I'd like you to meet my... fiancé... Dana."

She smiles broadly and hugs his arm, giggling a little. "I love it when he says that."

Eric grins, his cheeks growing warm and he clears his throat. "Um... yeah, so that's Katie and Ryder and Jeff and Trent." He points each one of them out.

Dana cocks her head and finds Thirteen standing closely to Ryder. "And who is that?"

"Oh yes. That's Jasmine. Trent's daughter."

"Ah yes. Your other niece. The one that-"

"Yes. She lives here with Katie and Ryder lives upstairs."

"I see." Dana smiles again. "Well... this is rather exciting, isn't it?"

Trent and Jeff exchange uneasy glances, even though they politely return smiles. Neither had missed her uptown clothes, high-heels and makeup. Her hair looked just about perfect, as did her painted nails. But looks weren't everything right? It was the inside that counted and Eric surely had found a sweet woman... right?

A queer sort of silence ensues as no one really knows what to do next. Ryder looks to Katie, not knowing if she preferred to take the lead or if she wanted him to.

Though Carson's eyes roam the table instead of Herb's face, his ears and mind are open, listening and processing. Love... was it true? Was that really what Mackenzie was feeling? Was that really what was torturing his own heart? It seemed to be an awfully strong word.

Would she still contact him again? Come looking for him? Write to him?

"I don't even know why it bothers me," he thinks aloud. After taking a sip of his coffee, he sighs wearily. "She's just another kid... never should have come to be in the first place. I don't know her from the next kid on the block. She's got a good family now. I got a life I like the way it is. I'm in no position to do anything as far as she goes. I have nothing in common with her. And the times we have seen each other, it's been a mess." He shrugs. "So why does it bother me when I have to say goodbye?"

Alec turns around to smirk at Ryan. "Cute." He rolls his eyes. "Stop me next time before I get to that point or I'll ruin my reputation."

Returning the lemonade to the fridge, his face is hidden for a moment. And in that moment, perhaps his eyes reveal that he really wasn't all that annoyed. "At any rate, I don't even know what Mackenzie's doing in town. Carson wasn't expecting her, that's for sure. Last time she showed up, she'd run away from an orphanage or something and got him in a heap of trouble - he didn't even know she existed before that." A snicker slips out. "I can just imagine the look on his face."

He didn't know all the details about that situation, but he knew enough. He couldn't help but be curious now. Was Carson going to get in trouble again? Had Mackenzie run away again? Would she end up sticking around this time? Was there a chance Carson would keep her? Did she have another family now? She hadn't looked all that good - was she being taken care of? It was none of Alec's business, but he was definitely curious.

Just about to turn around when Ryan takes him from behind, he smiles and takes her hands, looking over his shoulder at her. "Oooh, sexy, huh?" He gives a playful growl. "I can still play a bad guy if you want," he teases.

Shifting around to face her, he slings his arms over her shoulders and sways back and forth a little. Leaning his head own, he gives her a lingering kiss, softer this time. "I think I rather like being the good guy though," he muses quietly.

Letting her go, he ambles back to the living room to find his boots and put them on, lacing them up as he sat on the edge of the bed. "I'll follow you to supper in my bike. I got a stop to make before the races, so we can split up after we eat and I'll meet you there before it starts."

Justin stops his pacing and grins a little, even though Beth couldn't see it. He really did need to shut up, so he resists babbling any more.

"I... don't think I need anything around here. Nothing that can't wait anyway. I'm planning on being well enough by tomorrow that I'll have the energy to run some errands. And if I'm not... things will just have to wait another day."

Wandering to the window, he looks out to see the dogs playing. "So I guess I'll see you later then."

"Mm, kinda." Mick replays his conversation with Reese in his mind. "He seemed to have someone in mind, but he didn't say who. Asked if I cared if it was a female agent, so I'm guessing whoever it is is a woman." He shrugs. "Guess we'll just have to wait and see what he comes up with. In the meantime..." He stands up from the desk. "I want to tell Dylan - it's only fair he knows it was the Agency and that we'll have someone here to keep an eye out."

Encuragement

Giving a nod Herb continues to dry some of the other pots and pans before putting them away. Helping Carson and just keeping himself busy until they were ready to go. Not taking long at all they lock up and head for the coffee shop. Herb leads the way knowing Carson new where he was going.

Getting inside and sitting with there drinks Herb keeps his hands wrapped around his mug to warm them. Giving a little nod Herb didn't need to say anything more on his invite for coffee to Carson but he was giving his slight welcome with the nod. Taking a sip of his coffee Herb looks across the table and study's him for a moment. So much filled his heart, so much he didn't understand Herb felt bad for him.

"Because she might have another family now, but its not he real family, and its not her real father she wants to know. It comes down to love Carson and she loves you. For a child its hard to understand everything, and to her your pushing her away and she is pushing back because she wants to know you."

Thinking for a moment Herb's own mind wonders to his grandkids. He hadn't seem them in a very long time but he often did wonder if they new about there mother and her side of the family. It was a hard thing to comprehend and he new it couldn't be changed so not to dwell on it but if they showed up again how would they handle it?

"Children are funny things...they don't understand us, and we don't understand them. Its a wicked circle but its one we have to go through sometimes. All we can keep doing is praying and dealing with it as it comes up. But that little girl has a whole lot of love in her heart for you Carson and nothing is going to change that. Maybe in time she will accept the situations and be able to write to you or visit you."

Herb new it was a hard thing for them to accept as well seeing how hard it was on the child but he could only hope that in time maybe Carson's little girl could get to know him. Even if it meant just for summers or something he hoped it could get to that point for both there sakes.

Still laying with Alec Ryan listens to him tell her about his new discovered niece. Ryan can't help the surprised look on her face. She couldn't remember even hearing Carson had a daughter before. The more Alec talks about her though Ryan can't help the smile that spread across her face. She could see the quiet twinkle in Alec's eye that showed in a way he was excited about being and Uncle.

"If she is anything like the rest of you Banks though she it thick headed and will probably find a way to see you again too. So don't give up on the whole Uncle thing, I think its kinda cute."

Ryan gives a little wink and a giggle before getting up and following Alec to the kitchen too. Standing close behind him Ryan just loved being near Alec after not seeing him last night and than all of this morning. Wrapping her arms around his wast Ryan can't help the little sly tone in her voice.

"I can't pretend I don't know your bad guy past, but than if I did that It would take away half the fun. I think its adds something to how sexy you are."

Beth can't help but chuckle again. Hearing Justin stumble over his words and get everything mixed up was rather amusing to Beth. He's always been so good at talking to her that now it was just a bit silly to see Justin was human too.

"Justin shut up, I'm still coming over."

Shaking her head Beth stands up from the couch and heads to the kitchen pulling out a bottle and taking a sip of the water. Beth was getting use to spending more time in her apartment doing other things than just sitting and staring or working all the time. Being home was starting to be kind of nice.

"Did you need anything for around the house I can grab for you?"

Half hearing what was going on Rosetta works quietly at her computer. It had been a long day and the call on the phone was am important. When Mick was done he'd tell her what was going on so she did get best not to ease drop.

"I don't think thats a horrible thing. Never hurts to have just a little extra protection."

Putting her pen down and thinking for a moment Rosetta thinks to all the times they have had people at the ranch before. It was never bad to have an extra set of eyes to keep an eye on things. They couldn't want everything all the time to know there were eyes there for just that had a blanket to it.

"If it means keeping Dylan safe, and everyone else here I think its a good idea. Did Reese have anyone in mind?"

Tell me to shut up

Still staring into the dishwater, Herb's words sink in deeper than Carson would like to admit. For some reason, hearing that the older man was proud of him struck a buried chord. Perhaps it was because Carson had never heard those words from the one person he should have - his father. Perhaps it was the sudden realization that Herb was more than a friend... more than a mentor. Growing up with an abusive father, when he was even around, Carson had rarely received affirmation, other than when encouraged to do what was wrong. At the time, he hadn't realized how much he was missing out on. But now... a part of him wondered what it would have been like, had he been raised by someone like Herb... someone with love and understanding... someone with a gentle hand, but firm believes in the Truth. How much different would Carson's life have been? How many fewer regrets would he have today?

The sink becomes a blur, and Carson swallows hard. He reaches for one of the pans and a scrubber to wash it - a distraction from the small tears that he willed not to fall. And all of this... the pride... the guidance... all of it coming from a man whose daughter Carson had helped torture. It seemed like a lifetime ago.

"Coffee sounds great," he agrees quietly. Was it that obvious that he was struggling with temptation tonight? Did Herb know he was fighting his despised craving? Carson knew the answer was yes. Herb had always been able to read him like an open book, even when others couldn't.

"Let me finish up these dishes and then we can close up for the night and go."

It didn't take long, and Carson left a few things undone that he normally did at night, but he didn't want to make Herb wait too long or keep him out too late. He'd take care of everything in the morning before opening up again.

The Coffee Bean was open late, so that's where they agreed to go, Carson following Herb in his own car. On he way, he grabs his cell phone once again, dialing Misty. He lets her know he's going out with Herb for coffee and will be home just a little bit later than planned. There was a whole lot more he wanted to say to her... to talk to her about. But it would have to wait until he got home. He knew she'd be able to sense it in the tone of his voice, so he just lets it be for now, knowing she'd wait up for him.

Getting to the coffee shop, Carson finds a table in the corner for Herb and himself, and after settling in with their warm drinks, he finally dares to look at Herb, letting his eyes speak for themselves for several quiet moments.

"Thank you..." He purses his lips in thought. "For knowing what I needed." He didn't need to say any more... Herb knew.

Taking a slow sip of his coffee, he sighs and stares down into the hot liquid. "I wish Mac hadn't found me," he muses. "I don't understand why she can't be happy with her family. Her coming to see me just makes it harder on her. And then she flies off the handle anyway, so what does she gain? It wasn't a pleasant experience for her the last time. Why did she try again?"

He rubs his forehead, feeling the stress of the day. Yes, it was a good thing Herb was with him now, or tonight could have been a night for stumbling.

Alec sighs deeply and leaves his face buried between Ryan's neck and shoulder. "I wouldn't mind that," he mumbles. "But then you might be too tired to drive tonight. And then I'd lose my bet. So maybe I should let you get up."

With his grin hidden from her view, he plants a series of kisses to her neck before pulling back and looking at her again. His eyes were still sleepy, but he was slowly waking up. "Besides all that, I had an exciting day I wanted to tell you about." He leans in and kisses her nose. "I got to meet my niece today. Well, by the time I found out it was her, Carson was telling me to leave, but still." His lips curl into a wry grin. "I got to be Uncle Alec for a few minutes anyway."

Giving her one last quick kiss to the lips, he finally sits up, freeing Ryan. Sliding off the bed, he ambles to the kitchen, stretching and yawning. Opening the fridge, he didn't see anything he really wanted, but he reaches for the lemonade anyway. Taking a swig out of the carton, he wipes his mouth on his sleeve. "Cute kid though," he muses aloud, not realizing that this wasn't his usual type of conversation. "Kinda nice when somebody hasn't figured out yet that I'm the bad guy."

Justin cringes a little and tries to take Beth at her word so he didn't keep apologizing like he wanted to. She didn't appear to be upset, and obviously she hadn't been too mortified or she wouldn't have stuck around and... wait, had she just said she hadn't minded at all?

For a moment, he almost forgets he's on the phone. Did that mean she didn't care because she knew he was sick and it simply didn't bother her, or did it mean that she hadn't minded as in she had liked it? It was impossible to tell over the phone without seeing her eyes. The phone. The phone!

He snaps back to attention. "Okay." Did he sound as idiotic as he thought? What was wrong with him? He runs a hand through his hair, trying to get back on a halfway-intelligent track. "So you... you still okay with coming over again tonight? I mean... since I'm in my right mind now and all and wouldn't ever..." His voice trails off again. Would he never? What kind of a question was that?! What was he thinking?!

Realizing he'd just drifted into silence again, he gives a little groan. "Beth, can you just tell me to shut up before I make any more a fool out of myself?"

"Con, I'm fine."

"Well if you need-"

"I'm fine."

"Just-"

"Conrad!" Though Laura shoots her brother a look, there's still love and appreciation in her eyes. "Get out of here and get to work before Reese fires you for taking so much time off."

Con sighs. He knew she was alright now. He knew that Nate would be watching her like a hawk. He knew that Janet was right next door. He knew that Maggie knew what to do if something was wrong. But he still worried anyway. "Alright," he relents. Leaning over the bed, he gives her forehead a kiss. "I'm still gonna call tonight."

Laura rolls her eyes. "You do and Nate's gonna come after you."

"What for?"

"Not trusting him to take care of me."

Con grins. "We've been through that so many times, it's old hat by now."

"I know. That's the trouble with you men."

"Yeah, but you can't live without us, can you?" Con ducks a flying throw pillow and backs out of the bedroom. "Okay, okay, I'm going."

Watching her brother leave, Laura shakes her head and smiles. She did love her brother so much, even when he was overprotective. He and Nate still did go around sometimes, but it didn't seem to be quite as harsh anymore. Maybe they'd finally come to a silent understanding that both would always worry and look out for her. She got annoyed with them sometime but... how could she be upset with them for wanting to make sure she was alright?

Sinking back into her pillows, she lets out a long sigh. She was still so tired. Even after several days in the hospital after waking up, getting home seemed to trigger weariness in every bone in her body. It had been quite a shock to wake up and realize what a scare she'd given everybody, not to mention the weeks that had passed. Knowing that she and the baby were now on the mend though, she knew everything would be okay.

Turning her head, she rolls onto her side and looks down into the little cradle where their baby boy was sleeping. Already it had been proven he could sleep through anything and Laura was thankful for that. She hadn't been able to be the first to hold him, but it didn't matter. She loved him anyway, and she loved Nate. Life would be different now... so very different. And she was still uncertain about how she would manage but she knew she had the best man to help her along.

Rolling onto her back again, she pulls up the covers a little more under her chin. She could hear Nate moving about and knew he would probably stay home with her for a couple days. She felt badly that he'd missed so much work, but she couldn't help but be a little glad that he'd stay with her for a while. She wasn't ready to be alone yet.

Mick sighs as he leans back in the office chair, tapping his leg with a pencil as he listens on the phone. A couple hours away from the ranch with Rosetta had been much needed and his mind felt much clearer now. Unfortunately, stressful circumstances were still waiting when he'd returned.

"So it's been confirmed that it was the Agency."

"Yes," Reese responds with confidence. He had no doubt in Scott's information. "Do you think they'll try to go after Dylan again?"

"I don't know... I really don't know. I mean, we're all pretty capable of keeping an eye on things, and you know all of us here are reasonably skilled when it comes to defending ourselves. But at the same time, we're all busy and distracted most of the time too."

Reese thinks for a few moments. "What about setting up a post again?" It was only recently that they'd felt confident enough to remove the outer post on the edge of the ranch and utilize the Elite agents elsewhere. "Or do you think that makes a difference?"

Mick shrugs to himself and swivels in the desk chair. "I know the system was good and it definitely kept more eyes in places we couldn't be, but even then, it was possible to slip under the radar - that was proven more than once. And I wouldn't doubt but by now the Agency would know the post was there anyway. I think they were in the dark there for a while, but surely by now, they've figured it out."

"True." Reese rubs his chin thoughtfully. "How about a security guard?"

"You mean on the ranch grounds?"

"Yeah. Someone who wouldn't be involved in most of the other work - someone who can just make their rounds and keep an eye open so the rest of you don't have to look over your shoulders all the time. I mean, we could send an army, but-"

"That would take away our freedom," Mick finishes knowingly. The last thing the families wanted to do was lock themselves in and live in fear.

"Exactly. What about your guests? Your clients? Do you ever fear for them?"

"Rosetta and I have talked about it. We both pretty much feel the same way, that the guests aren't who the Agency is after, and most likely, the Agency won't waltz in here guns blazing. So we pretty much keep the whole thing under wraps. And, sometimes, like now, we get two or three families here at once that keeps us busy and distracted, but sometimes we've only got one individual for several weeks, and having an army posted here at a time like that would be overkill."

"Agreed." Reese continues to think. "So what about one security guard?"

"I think that might be a good idea. I mean, it's one more pair of eyes at least, but wouldn't be overbearing. You got someone?"

"Not at the moment." Reese reaches in one of his filing drawers and pulls out a file of personnel records. "But... Brown gave me a list a week or two ago of police officers he wanted me to check out for possible Elite training." His finger runs across one name in particular. "Do you care if it's a man or woman?"

Mick chuckles. "If anybody knows women are capable agents, it's me." He glances across the office in time to catch Rosetta's eye and he tosses her a wink. "What about Katie?"

"No... no, I don't want to put her in that position, working and not being able to spend time with family, not to mention I don't want her that far from Jason and I want him here."

"Right. Well whoever you send can't work twenty-four/seven."

"No, but even just making rounds at night will help - that's one less thing you guys would have to worry about."

"True."

Reese flips through several records, but comes back to the one he'd looked at before. "Tell you what, let me do some investigating and I'll get back to you. At the very least, since you all declined being part of the Elite, if we post an officer there, it'll give us a little more leverage, law-wise."

"Alright. Sounds good. Thanks, Reese."

"You bet."

Hanging up the phone, Mick sighs. He doodles on the desk calendar for a moment before looking over to Rosetta again. "It was the Agency that went after Dylan," he confirms, in case she hadn't figured it out from the one-sided conversation. "Reese is suggesting we post an Elite agent here just to keep an eye on things. I think that's not a bad idea. What do you think?"

Don't sweat it

The day had been a long one and Herb could feel how tired he was but sticking around the restraint was something he didn't mind doing. Not to mention knowing Carson needed a little extra help as his mind was wondering on many things right now.

Finishing up in the other room Herb wonders slowly back into the kitchen. Standing in the door way he watches Carson for a long moment. Not saying anything his just reads what his body said, and the slight sighs that come here and there.

"In life...some days will always be harder than others but its not that hard days that measure who we are. Its the good days that show how far we have come."

Coming into the kitchen all the way now and walking over to the sink Herb grabs one of the towels on the counter and starts to dry a few things off. Though everything was almost done Herb new it was going to be a long night still for Carson as he battled with himself.

"I don't know if I ever told you Carson how proud of you I am that you came this far. In life, and in the challenges you face every day. You've had some tough chooses to make, but all and all I think they have been what God would want."

Throwing the towel over her shoulder Herb turns to face Carson a little more as he searches his face for a moment.

"How about we go grab some coffee?"

Being pulled onto the bed more and than pinned under Alec Ryan can't help the grin that grew even bigger on her face. Going to reply she is cut off by the kiss in witch she returns with out any complainants. Letting her one hand climb up his back and the other finding the back of his head where she could rack her finger through his hair Ryan was happy with the kiss. As the kiss is broken Ryan lets her hands slip down to Alec's back and just rest there and he leans his head on her.

"A good pillow huh? Well I have worked my butt off today and its comfortable having you laying there, so if you plan on doing anything before the race your not going to want me laying here to long or I am going to pass out."

Picking up the phone and hearing Justin's voice Beth can feel the smile that starts to form on her face. She always liked hearing from him but as Justin talks today she can tell something is different, he sounded almost frantic.

"Justin is everything ok?"

Not being able to get anything more than that in Beth just listens as Justin starts to babble. At first she had no idea what he was talking about but the more he said the more she understood and why he was making a big deal out of it was beyond her.

"Justin...it...Justin..."

Letting out a small chuckle she didn't know if he had heard that or not but it was all she could do. She found her own cheeks starting to turn red as she felt slightly embarrassed herself.

Once the other end of the phone had fallen silent again and she was sure of it this time Beth shakes her head a little bit even though Justin couldn't see her.

"Justin...don't make a big deal out of it. It's ok really. I know you were sick, and everything so...I didn't mind at all. Don't sweat it ok?"

Can't even begin

Alec's mind is far away in a dream, the sounds around him muffled by the television. Reality seemed just a little bit distorted as he tries to pull himself from sleep. Someone was shaking his arm... someone was talking to him. A woman. A woman was here? No wait, not his dream, in reality. His brain fumbles to recognize Ryan's voice and slowly the fog lifts.

"Boring?" he mumbles sleepily. "I highly doubt that."

For having just being woken from a deep sleep, his movements are quick. Without warning, he grabs Ryan's arm and pulls her over the top of him, rolling over at the same time. Landing on top, straddling her, he tucks his arms around her sides, putting his weight on his elbows. Looking down at her, a groggy smile seeps out. "I don't think you know the meaning of the word boring," he muses.

Leaning down, his lips meet hers for a long, passionate kiss before he pulls back again, still pinning her with his own weight. "I thought you were never going to come." He yawns and lets his head fall onto her shoulder, nuzzling in. "I didn't do anything all day," he mutters. "I shouldn't be tired. But you're an awfully nice pillow."

Justin yawns and rolls over in bed, glancing at the clock. For once, he didn't care that he'd slept in so late. It was almost ten and very rare that he hadn't been up yet, but he was still feeling a bit lethargic from being sick. He didn't ache quite as badly, but he could tell he wasn't over the flu either. Thankfully, he'd been well enough last night though, that Beth had been able to go home. Dinner had been nice though... he really had enjoyed it. He did like her cooking and the soup had hit the spot, especially after not having been able to eat for several days.

Rolling out of bed, he recalls their conversations the evening before. They'd had some light chat, and even laughed a little. Then he'd explained a little bit more in-depth about things that had been going on with him. It had been easier to express himself than he'd though... perhaps after sharing with her the first time, it had simply broken the ice. Whatever the reason, he was glad she'd been there as a listening ear as he'd talked about Rebecca leaving, his friends' comments and his brother showing up. He'd spent countless hours getting people to talk to him because it was "healthy." Only now was he realizing that he hadn't taken his own advice... until now.

Wandering to the bathroom, Justin starts to brush his teeth. Maybe now that Beth was coming out of her shell, he was gaining that friendship he'd sought out in the beginning but had given up on. Maybe there was a second chance. He couldn't deny that he'd enjoyed her company lately. Spending time with her was... different... peaceful in a way. He didn't push her and she didn't push him. Maybe they'd worked out a pattern that he hadn't even recognized until now.

Finishing up in the bathroom and splashing some water on his face, he dries with a clean towel and continues to let his mind wander. Most of the last few days was coming back to him now. It came in bits and pieces, but his memory was returning. Some of it he didn't like - remembering the nightmares and how emotional he'd been. And some of it was warmer - Beth's tender care.

Justin ambles back to his bedroom to find some clean clothes, then heads to the kitchen. It's only after he's poured himself a glass of juice that he comes to a screeching halt. He blinks. Surely that wasn't a real memory... was it? Had that been a dream? His imagination, surely. He wouldn't have... he couldn't have....

Oh yes he would and yes he could. It was a clear as day now. The one thing he hadn't thought about until now. The one thing he hadn't remembered.

His gut twists a little and he leans on the counter. Even though no one was present, his face was burning. How on earth could he have done something like that? Out of it or not, it had been one of the most stupid things he'd ever done. Maybe he couldn't really be to blame, since he'd been so feverish, but still! How could he have done that?! And poor Beth... oh, surely he had made her uncomfortable, and yet she hadn't said a thing. She probably hadn't wanted to think about it anymore. Bless her for not blaming him, oh, but still!

Justin was mortified. Leaving his juice where it was, he goes to the living room phone. Glancing at one of the sticky notes on the table, he dials, closing his eyes as he hears the ringing on the other end. He had no idea what he was going to say, but he had to say something. There was no way he could wait and sit on this all day. She was planning on coming back over for supper tonight to check on him... he couldn't do this face-to-face. He wouldn't care if he were to be called a coward - maybe he was, but he'd chosen the phone and that's the way it-

Beth's answer makes him freeze. He stands dumbly in the middle of the living room, taking way too long to respond. "Um... this... it's Justin." He could kick himself. "Listen, I um... I just wanted to call and... because..." He racks his brain. He sounded like an idiot. Change that. He WAS an idiot.

He cringes, eyes closed, and puts a hand to his head, pacing in a little circle. "Beth, I am so sorry." He lets out the breath he'd been holding. "I woke up this morning and... and I was remembering things and it was all coming back to me and... and I remembered what I did and I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am."

Opening his eyes again, he continues to pace. "Kissing you was totally inappropriate on my part and I am truly mortified." Aside from the fact that he remembered how soft and warm it had been... He shakes his head to keep himself on track. "I put you in an awful position and it was all my fault, and I can't believe you didn't say anything - though I'm grateful, I'll admit, but..."

He stops, taking a deep breath. "I'm sorry," he ends lamely.

Still glaring at the floor when Herb returns to the kitchen, Mackenzie peeks out of the corner of her eye, spotting the peculiar objects. The scarf looked awfully soft and warm... and the ball was intriguing. She'd never heard of a stress ball before.

Her gaze slowly rises to Herb's eyes and she stares at him for a moment as if wondering if there were any strings attached to these things. Distracted from her anger, she hesitates, then reaches out and slowly pulls the scarf towards herself. It really was soft, and she holds it to her cheek. "I like green," she mentions quietly. Reaching for the ball next, she fingers it for a moment before testing it out with a a squeeze. It... did feel better than breaking something.

Her eyes circle around then end up on Herb again, her anger seeming to have subsided. "Thank you." Even a little smile emerges at the corners of her mouth.

Carson was thankful too, and shows it by a nod of thanks to Herb. At least the older man had some experience under his belt when dealing with a little girl. Carson had nothing to go on but instincts and they didn't always seem to be around when he wanted them.

Giving Mackenzie a few more minutes to cool down, he speaks to her again. He would just as soon let her be for a while longer, but right now, the most important thing was returning her to her family before this got out of hand. "What hotel is your family at?" he asks mildly.

No response.

"Well... if you're not gonna tell me, I have no choice but to call the police. Then you'll be in even more trouble, and so will I." He turns towards the telephone.

"They're at the Holiday Inn."

Carson hides his look of relief. "What's your dad's name?"

"He's not my dad."

"What's his name?"

She sets her jaw stubbornly and toys with the ball in her hand.

Carson sets his hands on the table and lowers his face to her level. "I don't understand why you won't tell me. Is it because you think you'll get to stay with me longer if I can't find your family?"

She didn't have to answer him. The look on her face revealed that he'd discovered the truth.

"You can't stay... not like this. I'm sorry. The police will have to take you back." He turns to the phone again.

"Ken Truman," Mackenzie mumbles. "Ken and Jeanette."

"Thank you." Carson sets a hand on her shoulder and is surprised that she doesn't shrug it off. Torn between wanting to return her to her family, and wanting to give in to his fatherly feelings, he reaches for the phone book. Finding the Holiday Inn was easy. Calling was hard. He dials six of the seven numbers before hanging up. There was more than one way to skin a cat.

"Herb... would you mind holding down the fort for just a little while? I'm gonna take her to her parents." He didn't like leaving Herb in a lurch, but if everything went okay, he'd be back before the dinner rush.

Mackenzie doesn't argue about leaving, but she does make sure her scarf is wrapped securely around her neck and the ball tucked safely in her pocket. She doesn't say anything to Herb as they leave the kitchen, but she does give him one last look, locking eyes with him for just a moment.

...The sky was already starting to grow dim as Carson drives across town. Mackenzie sits quietly in the passenger seat, seeming to be disinterested in the scenery. "Why didn't you call the police?"

"Because I wanted to show that I was innocent. If I would have kidnapped you, would I bring you back? Probably not. So this way, I don't get into trouble and... you don't have to go with the police." He gives her a sidelong glance. "And I thought this would give us a few extra minutes to talk."

Mackenzie stares at the car in front of them to keep herself from looking at Carson. "About what?"

"About how you keep saying I don't want to see you."

"Well, it's true, isn't it?"

He sighs. "You surprised me, I'll admit. And I'll also tell you that I never intended to be a father... at least not like this. But that doesn't mean that I'd turn you way or not talk to you or refuse to see you. Can you understand that?"

She shrugs. "Then how come you sent me away the last time?"

It was a complicated subject, but if she was grown up enough to run away and come looking for him, then Carson would try explaining. "This time is just like last time in that you may be my daughter, but you don't belong to me. You can't."

"Why not?"

"Because you have a family that adopted you and that means you belong to them now. My blood may run through your veins, but that's where it stops. You may not like it - you may even hate it. But sometime in life we just have to accept things the way they are and learn to be happy even if we don't have everything we want." Carson steers his car into the hotel parking lot and finds a space a little ways from the door. Cutting the engine, he shifts in his seat to face Mackenzie. "You ready?"

"No."

"What do I gotta do, Mac?"

She turns to look back at him, longing in her eyes. "Love me?"

Carson's heart broke just a little bit more, and he struggles not to let it show. Reaching over, he takes the same unruly strand of hair to tuck it behind her hair. Was it love he felt for this child? His child? This child that was a part of him? Was it love that was tearing him apart inside? "I do," he whispers. "But sometimes love doesn't change our circumstances."

Her eyes fill with tears again. Looking down, it's only now that she notices the ring on his left hand. Her gaze snaps back up again, causing one of the tears to run down her face. But it was surprise she showed, that had quickly replaced the sadness. "You're married?"

He nods, grinning.

"To who?"

Carson smirks and rolls his eyes. "Well, who do you think?"

For the first time in hours, Mackenzie breaks into a smile. "Misty?"

"Of course."

Then her face falls again. "I didn't even get to see her."

Sighing, Carson gets out of the car and goes around to her side, opening the passenger door too. "Come on. Your parents are probably worried sick."

And they were. As soon as Carson enters the hotel foyer with Mackenzie, a woman rushes forward with outstretched arms, pulling the little girl in for a tight hug as her own tears are shed. A man was right behind her, a mix of relief and worry written all over his face. "Thank God," he breathes. Both the man and wife kneel down and bombard Mackenzie with questions, making sure she's okay while the mother kisses her on her cheeks several times and wipes off some dirt smudges with a kleenex.

For a few minutes, Carson is ignored. He wonders if he should just turn and leave, but when he starts to, he's stopped.

"Wait." The man steps in front of him. "We can't thank you enough. Where did you find her?"

Carson fiddles with his keys. He knew the truth was best. "Mr. Truman, my name is Carson Banks."

It takes a moment, but then the recognition flickers in Ken's eyes and his jaw drops. "Oh, I should have known." He closes his eyes, showing how stupid he felt. "I knew you lived in Nevada but I didn't know where. When Mackenzie went missing, I didn't even think she might have gone looking for you."

Carson grins a little. "It's okay. She's safe now and... I'll leave you guys alone."

Ken's surprise lingers. "You're... not upset?"

"Oh, I wouldn't say that." Carson chuckles. "But what good would yelling do?" He shrugs. "There's not much more I can do. I wish there was but... I guess from here on out it's between you and Mac."

"Mac." Ken grins. "She said you called her that."

"Talks about me, ay?"

"Almost every day." Ken sighs. "And every time she does, she asks to come see you."

"I'm sorry... that it's rough, I mean."

Ken cocks his head, curious. "You're... different than I expected."

Carson chuckles again. "I'm not surprised. Especially if you got your information from Heather Jones."

Ken grimaces sheepishly. "Yeah, well... I knew it couldn't be all true if Mackenzie was that bull-headed about seeing you again."

"I won't say it was all a lie," Carson admits. "I have an awful lot of regrets. But... putting Mac in harm's way is the last thing I want to do. I may not be in a position to care for her as a father should but..."

Ken follows Carson's gaze to where Jeanette was now sitting with Mackenzie on the foyer couch. "But you care," he finishes.

"Yeah, I guess I do." Carson takes a deep breath and looks to the door. "I should be going. Unless you wanted me to talk to the police."

"No... no." Ken shakes his head. "We did call them, but I'll let them know she came back. I... don't think it will be necessary to mention your name."

Impressed, Carson can only be thankful to God that Ken was such and understanding man. He could tell that Mackenzie was in a good home. He had questions... lots of questions about why Mackenzie seemed so much colder than the last time they'd met, especially with a family like this. But whether he liked it or not, it was none of his business.

He extends his hand. "Thank you."

"No. Thank you." Ken shakes his hand firmly.

As Carson turns to leave again though, Mackenzie slips off the couch and comes running up behind him. Hearing her, Carson stops and turns, a little surprised that she wasn't finished yet. He looks down at her, waiting for an explanation.

Biting her lip, Mackenzie moves closer and wraps her arms around his waist. "Don't go," she begs softly.

Carson sighs and looks at Ken then Jeanette, both of whom seem touched and concerned. He glances down again and rubs Mackenzie's shoulders. "I have to. Remember?" He lifts her chin. "Banks' don't let any situation get the best of them. I know you can be strong." And prying himself away, he backs to the door, ensuring she doesn't follow before he's gone.

Ken reaches for Mackenzie from behind, and holds her against him lovingly. "I think we got a lot to talk about, kiddo."

She sighs and looks up at him. "I guess I'm in trouble, huh?"

"Oh... yeah, a bit. But the thing I'm most worried about is that you're okay."

Mackenzie glances back to the door as fresh tears form. 'Banks' don't let any situation get the best of them.' "I guess I have to be." Turning around, she buries her face against him as she cries.

He gently picks her up and cradles her in his arms to carry her to their room, joined by his wife. They did have a lot to talk about, and the family discussion would last long into the evening.

Driving back to the restaurant, Carson turns up the radio as loudly as he could stand it. An awful craving had started and he knew he needed to go straight back to Mom and Pop's, lest he make a stop he'd regret. But his mind just wouldn't leave him alone.

It was better this way, right? He'd done the right thing? Mackenzie obviously had a loving family, and that was all that mattered, right? But why had he been put in this position again? Why had he been forced to interact with his daughter, reigniting those unwanted feelings?

Phoning Misty as he drove, he gives her the brief version, letting her know he'd fill her in later, but for now, there hadn't been any trouble and she needn't worry.

By the time he got back to the restaurant, he was no closer to any answers to his questions. His mind wasn't in the game anymore though, and the evening was a disaster in the kitchen. He messed up several orders, dropped a pan of spaghetti sauce on the floor, and spilled a pan of dishwater, after which he slipped and fell, pulling something in his back. While he was glad Herb was there to lend a hand, he wasn't too thrilled that the older man saw all his bungles.

Leaning on the sink, he stares down into the dishwater, letting a pan soak. His back hurt and head hurt from his fall, his heart hurt, and he wanted a drink so badly he was almost afraid to leave. By himself. He knew he needed to call Misty and tell her exactly when he was leaving so she'd know when he was supposed to be home, but he hadn't yet.

Watching the dishwater bubbles gradually pop one by one, he wonders what Herb must think of all this. Here Carson was, supposedly responsible and capable enough to run the restaurant, and then days like this happened. Was he really going in the right direction?

Small Gifts

Sitting at the other side of the small table Herb was sitting and eating his lunch. The day was a slow one and he wasn't really needed here but even he needed to get out of the house once in a while to stay sain. At least here if he over did it there would be people to yell at him, and he new they would.

Hearing the young girls voice Herb looks up from the table a warm smile coming to his lips as she comes to the table. She looked like Carson he would give her that. There was no question she was his child.

"Its very nice to meet you Mackenzie."

Sitting back and mind his own business Herb says nothing more but his ears can't help but stay alert to what was going on. Even as Mackenzie throws her temper tantrum he doesn't flinch. Only looking up once he gives a nod to Carson to show he was doing an ok job giving him the encouragement he needed. He could see the look in Carson's eyes and new he was hurting and confused. Though he shouldn't be this was just part of the motions that sometimes in this situation you had to go through.

Standing and excusing himself Herb leaves the room not saying anything more than he would be back. An with in a few moments he was. A knitted scarf that had different color greens knitted through it. A long with another small black object. Sitting down at the table again Herb looks to the young girl again before sliding the items across the table to her. Maybe a distraction would ease her anger a little, and help Carson to calm down.

"My wife use to knit when it was slow here on days she worked. That scarf just happened to be one that was lingering from that time. It's starting to get cold out there maybe you could put it to some use."

Herb's smile grows as his eyes twinkle with the joy of being able to help someone else. Though on the outside he could seem rough inside he was a big softy.

"And this here...it belonged to my daughter. Its a stress ball. When you get upset you squeeze it and its meant to release it. How...I have no idea but it has to be safer than throwing a glass right?"

"Don't worry I'll hold the party off for now!"

Carol gives a laugh and a wave as the two head for the door.

Shaking her head and giving him a returning squeeze it doesn't take long before Nikki and Pete were in his convertible. As he leans over to give her a more meaningful kiss Nikki returns it with the same kind of enthusiasm.

Bringing her hand to the side of his face Nikki lets her hand rest there cradling his head and letting the kiss continue till finally it is broken. Letting her hand linger for a moment as her eyes sparkle she gives a small laugh before leaning back on her side again.

"Hello Hello...how about we go to the old country buffet?"

Sticking her car keys in her pocket Ryan knocks on Alec's door and waits. Not getting any answer she knows again only to get nothing once more. Fishing for her keys again she unlocks the door and enters. Alec should be home they had made plans to meet up here.

Wondering inside and seeing the tv on in the other room Ryan walks slowly in that direction. It was odd Alec would be home but not answer his door. Getting into the living room she understands why. Seeing him asleep on the bed she can't help but smile as she walks over and eases down on the corner. Giving his arm a little shake she can't help but tease him a little.

"Am I that boring that your falling asleep on me now?"

12/26/10

Hurt, confused and embarrassed

Pete doesn't think twice about returning Carol's hug. Truth be known, he enjoyed it. Perhaps there was a part of him that missed his own mom. Grinning as he pulls back, he shakes his head. "A little jealousy never hurt anybody," he teases.

Turning to Nikki, his grin widens and he wraps his arms around her in a hug. A kiss to the cheek would do, until they were alone, so that's all she gets for now - that and an extra squeeze that lets her know he'd be more affectionate later.

"Mmm... yeah." He sighs, knowing that he looked as weary as he felt. "Just one of those days. Sometimes I hate not being able to talk about it." Turning, he keeps his arm around her waist. "But I'm alright. Just hungry." He tosses Carol a wink. "I'll bring her back safe and sound in a little while. Don't do anything crazy while we're gone."

Once he and Nikki were outside in his convertible, he puts his sunglasses back on and starts up the engine. He doesn't pull away yet though - instead, he takes a moment to lean over and give Nikki the lingering kiss to the lips he'd wanted to give her earlier. "Hi again. Where would you like to go for lunch?"

Ryder's laughter returns, more from just watching Thirteen laugh than anything. Setting his hands on his hips, he shakes his head, waiting for her to compose herself, and holding back any more remarks he could come up with.

"Yes... yes, I can prepare the cheese for you, no problem."

Trent poke his head into the kitchen, a bewildered look on his face. "You two okay in here?"

Ryder snickers as he retrieves the cheese from the refrigerator. "Oh yeah, sure. We just about had a natural disaster, but thankfully some readjusted grammar came to the rescue."

Trent blinks, having no idea what was going on. "Right. I think I'll just... go back in here."

Once he disappeared, Ryder chokes on another laugh, trying not to get started all over again.

Alec tosses his keys onto the little table and wanders over to his bed by the window. Sitting back against the wall, he kicks off his boots and pulls his knees up, and letting his eyes roam the small apartment. Though several hours later, his mind continued to wander back to Mackenzie. It was as if a picture of her face had been burned into his mind, and he wasn't even sure why. Maybe it was because she was family. Maybe it was because of her childlike acceptance, when others simply dismissed him as a ruffian.

His fingers fiddled with the gold chain around his neck. Ryan had been the first - the first to show genuine care. Misty had followed. Today it had been a little girl. Each time, it did something strange to his heart - something he wasn't sure he could put into words. It wasn't something he disliked though. He just wanted to understand it better. He felt as if in turn, he was obligated to do something as well, but he didn't know what.

Yawning, Alec flops over onto his side and grabs the television remote. Ryan would be out of work soon, and he remembered she was coming over here to decide what they'd do for supper. She had a key, so if he fell asleep, she could let herself in. And it was a good thing, because in twenty minutes, he had fallen asleep, the television still droning.

Carson listens and takes Herb's words to heart. He didn't always agree with Herb right away, but too many times, he'd come to know the older man's wisdom, and too many times he hadn't taken advice when he should have.

"Yeah... you're probably right. I need to hear it from her first before I do anything else. I just didn't have the heart to wake her up. She looked exhausted." Sighing, he still leaves the dirty dishes and pulls his cell phone from his pocket. Slipping out into the hall, he dials Misty's cell phone. He wasn't sure that he liked getting her voice mail or not - he did want to talk to her, but at the same time, he didn't want to interrupt her work, so maybe it was better.

"Hey, Babe, it's me. Um... listen, Mackenzie showed up at the restaurant a bit ago. I still don't know why. She ended up breaking down in tears and falling asleep so I'm just waiting to talk to her now, hoping the cops don't come in the meantime. Nothing to do but wait at this point but I just wanted to let you know. If you see Angelica, you might mention it to her, but I'm not convinced I'll need her on this one yet. Not sure how the rest of the day is gonna go, so if you wanna call me later and find out what's going on, you can. I... guess that's it. Love ya."

Flipping his phone shut, another sigh seeps out along with a silent prayer. None of this was easy...

"...Dad?"

Carson shoots a glance over his shoulder as he juggles a hot pizza from the oven. He'd just been ready to go wake Mackenzie, but it looked like she'd finally woken up herself. "Hey. You alright?"

She nods and enters the kitchen hesitantly, sitting down in the empty chair at the little table. Her eyes study Herb for a moment before drifting back to Carson. "Did... did you call the police?"

"No." Carson prepares the pizza on a tray and takes it to the window, handing it to Aerith to give to the waiting table. Wiping his hands on his apron, he comes to the table, setting his hands on his hips. "I wanted to hear your side of the story first."

Mackenzie bites her lip. "Can I have some water?"

Carson nods his head towards the sink. "There's glasses there in the corner."

She gets up and retrieves her own water before returning to the table and quenching her thirst. Glancing up to her father again, she searches his eyes. "You're mad at me, aren't you?"

"No." Carson was upset with the situation, but not mad at her. "Just a bit confused." He glances to Herb, just as glad for a witness. "Herb, this is Mackenzie. Mackenzie, this is my good friend Herb."

Mackenzie reaches across the table to shake his hand. "Hi."

Carson grabs the last chair and turns it around to sit backwards. He tips his hat back on his head, awaiting an explanation. "Alright. Let's hear it."

"I... I got lost and-"

Carson throws her a reprimanding look. "You better than to try to lie to me. You couldn't get away with it last time - you're not gonna get away with it now."

She squints at him. "You're different."

His eyebrow quirks. "Well... I guess that's the kind of thing Jesus does."

Mackenzie smiles a little and takes another sip of water. "I remember they all thought you were a bad person but when I saw you pray, I knew they were wrong."

As much as Carson wanted to continue a light conversation, he knew that very possibly, time was of the essence. "Mac... get back on track."

She sighs. "My family is in town on vacation."

"Your adopted family?"

"Yeah." Mackenzie's eyes fall to the table. "Ken, he had to come to a meeting or something, and so we all came. On the way to the hotel, I recognized some of the streets so..."

"You came here." Carson nods, his strong apprehensions returning. "Without telling them. And now they're frantically looking all over for you and have probably already called the police. Do you have any idea how much trouble you're going to be in?"

Her eyes remain on the table and her lower lip quivers.

Carson didn't remember her being this fragile before, and he still wondered about the weary look in her eye. What had happened to that strong-willed stubbornness and reckless abandon? She obviously still had some spunk left, for her to have come here, but even so, there was something else... something that warned Carson not to become too angry.

He reaches out and with a gentle finger, he lifts her chin so she'll look at him. "Is that what happened? You snuck away on your own without telling anyone?"

She nods. "Yes."

"Why?"

"I... I just... I wanted to see you again."

"Even if you thought I might not want to see you?"

"I just wanted to find out." A tear trickles down her cheek. "I guess you really didn't want to see me, huh?"

Carson can feel that same old tug on his heart and he glances to Herb, groping for strength before he looks back to his daughter. "How many times do I have to tell you that has nothing to do with it?"

"It does too." The flame was back in her eyes and she glares at him. "It has everything to do with it. If you wanted to see me, you'd find a way. You wouldn't be mad that I came to see you. You would have been happy to see me!" Her tone raises and she stands up, the frustration flashing in her eyes. "You would have given me a hug without me asking for it! But you really don't care, do you?" Her hand grips her empty water glass and aims it to throw at the wall.

Carson was quicker though and is on his feet in an instant, grabbing the glass before it can be hurled into oblivion. In one movement, he spins Mackenzie around so her back is pressed against him with his arm across her chest to hold her tightly as she fights. His other hand pries the glass from her hand before it breaks. A kick to his shin makes him wince, but he doesn't let go. Handing the glass off to Herb, he takes her in both his arms, struggling to keep a good grip on the skinny girl. "Settle down," he warns. "Come on. Sit down. This is no way to behave." When he receives an elbow to his ribs, he grabs her arm and twists it behind her back just enough to make it hurt. "Cut it out!" he barks. "Now I mean it. I'm bigger, stronger and a whole lot smarter than you when it comes to fighting. But I don't want to hurt you."

Worn out from fighting her father's strength, Mackenzie breathes heavily but begins to relax. "You already have," she hisses.

Carson ignores the sting for now. "You gonna sit down, or do I have to keep holding you like this?"

"Go ahead," she mutters.

Carson twists her arm a little bit more, making her rise to her tip toes.

"Ow!"

"You gonna sit?"

"Fine."

Carson slowly releases her but remains on guard in case she tried anything else. He'd been taken by surprise once. Not again.

Mackenzie flops back down in the chair, glaring at the floor.

Carson remains standing this time and just studies her, wondering where all this anger had come from. She thought he was different, and he could see she was different too. But why? Maybe he would never know. One thing he did know though, was that what she'd just said really did hurt. It shouldn't have, but somehow it had made its way through his thick outer shell. He'd never meant to hurt her. He'd never meant for her to be at all, let alone like this.

With his own emotions heating up, he paces behind her for a moment, trying to keep cool. His eyes drift to Herb. He was hurt, confused, and a bit embarrassed too.

12/24/10

Like a Son

Stopping what she was doing and looking at Ryder as he breaks out in laughter all she can do is look at him. Letting her words sink in and than his as well till finally she own smile slips across her face as a small laugh forms in her throat, but than not being able to help but bursts forward into more of and out right laugh as she held her side.

Picking up a dish towel and throwing it at him Thirteen leans against the counter as tears roll down her cheeks. Gasping for air as she laugh she thought for sure everyone else was going to winder what on earth was going on.

Finally though breathing slow and catching her breath Thirteen whips the tears from her eyes. Shaking her head and looking back at Ryder she cocks her head a little bit at him.

"Can you prepare the cheese. There thats a little better wording. Oh man my sides hurt."

Finishing up the dishes she had started Nikki couldn't help the smile that spread across her face at the sound of Pete's voice. She was happy he'd just walked in, maybe he was growing more comfortable in doing so.

"Hey Pete, we are in the kitchen."

Hearing Pete's voice Carol sat a little straighter herself a smile spreading across her own face as he appeared in the door way. It was nice to have Pete come around, to have a man in the house again it was just nice.

"Boy are you a sigh for sore eyes. Come here and give me a hug."

Holding her arms out to Pete she new he wouldn't be fended by her forwardness it was just how she was and always had been. Letting her smile grow as Pete came closer Carol wrapped her arms around him and give him a slight squeeze. Letting go and pulling away her eyes twinkle as she looks to Nikki and than back to Pete again.

"Alright I better let you give that daughter of mine a hug now before she gets jealous."

Nikki can't help but let her smile grow even more as she gives a shake of her head. Her mom had so much spunk in her dispirit everything else. Nikki could only hope when she became that age she would have the same.

As Pete walked over to her Nikki's eyes sparkled bright with life. She loved being near him and just feeling him close. When they had known each other before she'd always had a crush on him but never though anything would come of it. Now though knowing he was hers really did make her heart flutter than her dream had come true.

"She's right you know. You are a sigh for sore eyes. Rough day?"

Keeping an eye from where he was cooking what was going on in the dinning room did not go past his eye. From the girl coming in that he new was Carson's daughter, to watching her interact with Alec, than Carson coming in. His watchful eyes took in all in and formed thoughts in his mind wondering what would happens next but not saying anything keeping his thoughts to himself.

As Carson comes into the kitchen he's silent just listing to Carson but not wanting to butt into where his nose didn't belong. But as Carson brings a question his way Herb straightens a little and whips his hands on his apron.

"Gods working his mysterious ways again. Sometimes heart, and the right thing to do can conflict with each other but its God's will for us to do what is right, even if we don't understand it."

Continuing to study Carson's face Herb looking into the young mans eyes. Carson was like a son to him, someone he'd stick his neck out for till the end of time. Though things had been rough Carson has changed and been there for his family.

"Maybe once she wakes you should sit her down and hear her side of the story before making you desitions. I call to Misty and your lawyer friend might be a good idea too. Just so if anything back fires you can have you own foothold and people knowing whats going on would be a good thing."

Boredom

Alec swivels back and forth on the stool as he sits at the counter in Mom and Pop's. It was quiet around here... too quiet. If there were more people, he could stir up some trouble or at least eavesdrop on some juicy gossip. As it was, there were only a couple people in the corner, then some old lady along the wall that was eating her late lunch slower than he'd ever seen anyone eat. Flirting with Aerith was out of the question - if Wyatt found out, he'd be dead, and if Ryan found out, he'd be deader. He couldn't pick on Thirteen - she wasn't here, but even if she was, she looked a bit frightened of him to begin with. Carson wasn't here to bug - it was Herb in the kitchen just for while so Carson could run errands. And thus... Alec sat.

He sighs and takes another sip of his half-empty glass of Coke. It really was his days off that he hated, as ironic as it was. He knew he couldn't go bug Ryan at work too often or she'd get into trouble - Gage was either sleeping or with Sapphire... not that he'd want to hang out with him anyway. The races were tonight, but... that was tonight. Misty was at work and he certainly didn't want to bug her there. Reese let him go work with Dalton sometimes, but he really didn't feel like sitting in Scott's shadow today. And... that was the extent of his options. Why he'd ended up here, he wasn't sure. Usually he tried to avoid Carson. Maybe there was an ornery part of him that just wanted to see how his brother would handle him being here, but just his luck, even that wasn't happening. He wasn't hungry, so he'd simply opted to get something to drink. He'd have to come earlier the next time to get in on a little more action.

The bell over the door caught his attention and he looks over his shoulder, surprised to see a lone little girl. The denim jacket she wore seemed to be several sizes too big, and her blonde ponytail had seen better days. Alec did think it strange she was here by herself, but who was he to judge? He turns back around and takes another sip of his pop, chewing on the straw for no apparent reason.

A few seconds later, an accidental bump to his elbow turns his head again and he sees the little girl pulling herself up on the stool next to him. Catching his gaze, she stares straight into his eyes.

Alec returns the stare, a little annoyed, but more intrigued and even amused. "Got a problem?" he asks dryly.

She shakes her head. "No."

He straightens and turns a little more to face her, cocking his head. "Then do I have antennas sticking out of my head or what?"

The little girl quirks an eyebrow. "No."

Alec was a little disappointed she didn't even crack a smile. There was something odd about her though. She almost seemed familiar. But that couldn't be - it wasn't as if he hung around kids that often. He tries to figure it out, now seeing the little dirt smudges on her cheek and noting how thin and pale she looked.

She continues to study him for a few more moments before speaking again. "You look a lot like my dad."

His eyebrows rise. "Oh, really? Well then... your dad must be a pretty good looking guy."

She rolls her eyes. "Don't flatter yourself."

Alec laughs outright. "Touché."

"What's that mean?"

"It means..." Alec furrows his brow. "Well... I guess it's just something grownups say when they've been bested."

The girl finally shows a faint smile. Turning her attention away, she cranes her neck to see into the kitchen but seems disappointed as she sits back again.

Alec searches her face but doesn't find much. He looks around the restaurant again, thinking by now someone would have shown up to claim her, but no one else had come in. "Hey... you a runaway?"

Her eyes snap angrily back to his. "No," she retorts sharply. "I'm just thirsty."

"Hey, okay." Alec holds up his hands in defense. "You got any money?"

Her anger turns into timidness as her gaze drops. "Um... no."

"Uh-huh." Alec sighs and looks around. Aerith was busy chatting with the old lady and Herb was still busy in the kitchen. Sliding off the stool, he springs up onto the counter, swinging his legs around and landing on the other side. Grabbing a small glass, he goes for the soda pop. "What'll you have?"

The girl eyes him suspiciously. "You're not gonna steal that, are you?"

"Of course not." Alec rolls his eyes and fishes some change from his pocket. "See?" He deposits it by the register. "Now what do you like?"

"Orange and Coke."

"You've got to be kidding me."

She shakes her head.

"Well okay then. Half and half?"

"Mostly Coke. Just a little orange."

Alec shakes his head this time. "Curiouser and curiouser."

The girl almost giggles. "Alice in Wonderland."

Alec grins as he fills the glass and returns it to her, then swings up and over the counter again. "Does that mean you think I look like a little girl in a blue dress?"

She shakes her head, taking a long sip of her pop, proving how thirsty she'd been. "No." She cocks her head. "Maybe the mad hatter."

"Ha!" Alec sits back down again and retrieves his own pop. "You have a quick wit, I'll give you that." Fiddling with his straw wrapper, he reaches over the counter again, grabbing a plastic spoon. Tearing off a bit of the wrapper and squishing it into a little ball, he places it on the very end of the spoon handle. Turning it to the open window area into the kitchen, he slaps the spoon's shovel and catapults the paper ball into the air. It arcs too high though and ends up hitting the wall above the window and falling to the floor.

The little girl squints at him. "I could do better."

"Oh, really?" Alec mimics a cocky air. "Well, Blondie, here." He hands her the spoon and tears off another piece of straw wrapper to make the ball for her.

"My name's not Blondie," she retorts, taking the spoon and ball.

"Well what is your name?"

"Mackenzie." She takes careful aim and lets the wrapper fly. She did get closer than Alec to the window, but as hers bounces off the corner, it goes straight for someone's glass of water behind the counter - perhaps Aerith's or Herb's. Mackenzie's eyes widen and she crouches down, looking around sheepishly to make sure no one had seen.

Alec snickers and takes back the catapult. "If you're gonna stir up trouble, you gotta do it the right way," he chides. This time, his aim was at the old lady's table. Aerith had disappeared for the moment, so he lets the paper ball fly. And as it lands in the old lady's hair, he turns back around quickly, trying not to laugh too loudly and give himself away.

Mackenzie slaps a hand over her mouth and hides behind him. "I think she thought it was a bug," she whispers in between giggles.

"Here. Now you pick a target."

Back and forth, Alec and Mackenzie tried to outdo each other, sometimes hitting their targets and sometimes not. Just as Mackenzie lets her last one fly though, it spins out of control and winds up going behind her towards the door. Twirling around, her eyes go wide as the little paper ball hits the man who had walked in the door only moments before. The plastic spoon drops from her hand and she slowly slides from the stool. "Dad."

"Dad?!" Alec's own eyes widen as he looks between Carson and Mackenzie. "Dad?"

Carson blinks and stares at them both for a moment before his eyes lock with his daughter's. "Mackenzie?"

"You... you still remember my name."

"Of course I do." Carson continues to look at her with shock. "What are you doing here? And what..." He points to Alec. "What are you doing with him?"

"We... we were just playing a game." She bites her lip. "I'm sorry."

Carson's mind spins and he glares at his brother. "You got an explanation here, Alec?"

"I-"

"You know him?" Mackenzie interrupts.

"Yes." Carson folds his arms across his chest. "And how did you two meet?"

"She just walked in here," Alec defends. "I bought her something to drink and we were having a great time until some ugly buttface came in and ruined the fun."

Mackenzie chokes on a giggle that wanted to come out so badly.

Carson's eyes narrow. "Who brought you here, Mac? Why are you here?"

As quickly as the humor had entered her eyes, it was gone, replaced by tears that lingered just on the verge of overflowing. "I guess you still don't wanna see me, huh?"

Carson sighs, closing his eyes for a moment to keep his cool and maintain his composure. One couldn't blame him for his shock. "That has nothing to do with it." He kneels down to be at her eye-level. "But remember the last time?" he asks a little more gently. Her screaming and crying as she was dragged from this very restaurant and him being slapped into handcuffs was still a very vivid memory for him.

Mackenzie's eyes drop. "But this time no one tricked me," she murmurs.

Carson glances back up to Alec. "You didn't have a thing to do with this?"

"I swear." Alec holds up his hands. He only knew a little bit about the history here, so he wasn't quite sure what was going on. But one thing was definite... a new kind of feeling had suddenly slipped into his heart and latched on with a death grip. He looks down at Mackenzie with new eyes as a little grin emerges. "So she's-"

"Yes." Carson stands back up again. "Now if you wouldn't mind leaving..."

Mackenzie is confused by her father's new, colder tone and she looks back and forth between the two men for a moment. "But... but he didn't do anything. And you said you know him."

"I do, but-"

"I'm the black sheep of the family, Kid," Alec responds.

"Family?" Mackenzie's eyes connect with his once again. "You're... family?"

"In a manner of speaking. I'm your dad's half-brother."

Mackenzie's eyes widen. "You're my uncle!"

Whether he meant to let it show or not, Alec's mouth curls into a smile. "I guess I am."

Carson sees the look on Mackenzie's face, and he sees the smile on Alec's. And something inside of him twisted just a little bit more. "Alec, please leave."

"But, Dad, I want to-"

"He's not good company," Carson cuts her off tersely.

Mackenzie crosses her arms. "That's what they said about you."

Alec would have laughed, had his brother's words not stung. But they did, and he knew it was best to leave. "I'm going," he relents quietly. Making sure he still had his wallet and keys, he aims for the door, throwing Mackenzie a little wave. "Nice to meet ya, Kid."

"Goodbye, Alec." Her eyes follow him out until he's gone and then she looks back up at Carson again. "I'm sorry." Her lower lip trembles. "I just thought... I wanted to..." So tired, worn out and afraid, the tears finally come. Just letting them run down her face, her eyes fall to the floor and she sniffs, sobbing softly but trying to stand so bravely.

A chunk of Carson's heart seems to chip off completely and after a moment of hesitation, he lowers himself to one knee again and takes her small hands in his. "It's okay, don't cry," he tries to comfort. He wipes away some of her tears, but it doesn't seem to do any good. Glancing around, he sees Aerith, and knew that she was probably the only one that would recognize Mackenzie. His look of helplessness is passed on to her before he focuses back on the little girl in front of him.

Not wanting to make any more of a scene than it already was, he stands up again and leads Mackenzie by the hand back to the little room down the hall. Sitting her on the bed and kneeling in front of her, he just lets her cry, feeling terribly confused. "I'm sorry." His tone was much gentler now. "I didn't mean to upset you. You just... you just surprised me."

Mackenzie sniffs and wipes her eyes with her jacket sleeve. "If... if you don't want me here, I'll leave."

"No... no, I'm not gonna throw you out." Carson roll his eyes. He certainly hadn't expected this - he'd already figured he'd never see her again, so shock wasn't even the half of it. But that didn't mean he'd just send her back out on the street. Reaching over to the little nightstand, he grabs a tissue and dabs her eyes. "Now... you gonna tell me what's going on?" His worst fear was a repeat of being accused of kidnapping.

Mackenzie sniffs again, remaining silent while her eyes roam the floor.

It's only now that Carson takes note of her pale face and dark circles under her eyes. Fatherly instincts kick in and his thumb wipes off a smudge of dirt on her face before he tucks a couple unruly strands of hair behind her ear. "You gotta tell me, Mac," he prompts quietly. "Please."

Finally her eyes lock with his - blue steel meeting blue steel. "Can I have a hug?" she whispers.

Carson's heart lurches. He felt no less awkward than he had the last time they'd met. Showing affection to anyone but his sister and wife, let alone a child, was not something he was accustomed to, nor was he even sure how. But the tiny spot in his heart that had softened the first time he'd seen his daughter had, perhaps, had time to grow as the months had passed. Perhaps there was a little less fear and a little more love, even if he didn't yet realize it.

Giving in to the paternal urge, he rises to sit next to her and pulls her into a warm, strong hug. She folds into him, sobbing into his chest. Carson rocks her gently and runs his hand over her head. "Shh... it's okay... you're okay."

It was probably fifteen minutes that passed before Mackenzie's sobs grew quiet and her breathing slowed. After several moments of silence, Carson realizes that he little girl had cried herself into an exhausted sleep. Not knowing what else to do, he carefully lays her down on the bed and covers her up with a blanket. It's only then that he notices a scar on her neck. He didn't think he'd seen that before - it didn't look all that old.

Backing away, he stands in the doorway for a few moments, just watching her sleep. And quite unexpectedly, his own tears well up in his eyes. He had resigned this part of his life... and now it had returned. For how long, he didn't know, but it felt even harder this time.

Swallowing hard, he swipes at his eyes, not wanting anyone else to see this emotional display. He wasn't even sure why the tears had come in the first place. Perhaps because he was staring at eleven fragile years that he had completely missed... eleven fragile years filled with grief for which he blamed himself... eleven fragile years that never should have been.

Carson knew he needed to find out what was going on, and find out fast. He needed to find out what Mackenzie's story was and find out how she got here. He needed to call the police and/or social services to ensure he wasn't blamed for kidnapping. But for the moment...he didn't have the heart to wake Mackenzie. Phone calls could wait for just a little while.

Finally turning away, he leaves the door open and heads for the kitchen to relieve Herb. Entering, he leans back against the wall and takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly and trying to get his head back on straight. It wasn't easy though. "My daughter just showed back up again," he announces lamely. "She's asleep in the bedroom."

Running a hand through his hair, he grabs his baseball cap and slaps it on, retrieving his apron as well. Misty... he needed to call Misty too and let her know what was happening, but he'd rather wait until she was out of work to disturb her. "What's God doing to me, Herb? I don't understand what He wants." Turning, he leans back against the counter, letting the dirty dishes sit for now. Folding his arms, he sighs. "Logic is screaming at me to call the police, but my heart is warning me to wait. I don't know what to do."

Pete's shoulders start to drop as he hears Nikki start to decline. But when he hears her mother's voice in the background and she changes her mind, he grins. "Don't go anywhere."

He stands and slips on his leather jacket, keeping her on the phone. "I'm on my way as we speak. I'll get the pleasure of seeing your mom and on top of that, getting you alone in my car."

He stops, rethinking what he'd just said, and laughs sheepishly. "Or... something like that. Never mind. Just don't leave - I'm a lonely man, desperate for your company."

As he heads from his cubicle, still talking on his cell phone, he brushes past Gunner who bats his eyes and puckers his lips. Pete gives him a hearty whack to the arm and keeps walking, fishing for his keys at the same time.

It only takes him a few minutes to get to the house and park his convertible out front. Hopping out, he ambles up the walk then knocks and enters, having quickly learned to just go ahead and go in, lest he get another chiding from Carol about him being welcome there any time.

"Honey, I'm home!" he calls teasingly.

Ryder leans his head into Thirteen's hand and his eyes close for their short exchange of affection. To have these feelings returned to him of her own freewill brought the warmest sensation to his heart. She had come here almost as if she were a little girl trapped in a woman's body, stunted by the Agency. And now... now she was becoming that woman in her own right, standing on her own two feet, learning and evolving into someone capable and willing to love. She had longings, dreams and passions - all of which had been locked away for so long. But now they were being allowed to bloom, and every day she grew... and every day, Ryder's heart loved her just a little bit more.

Pulling away, he smiles and reaches up a finger to give her a teasing little tap on her nose. "I'm glad I make you feel good - that's what I'm aiming for, ya know."

Turning towards the refrigerator at Thirteen's request for cheese, he suddenly stops and can't help the laughter that slips out. Throwing quite a silly grin over his shoulder, he shakes his head, finally ceasing his laughing. "Trust me - unless you want me to clear the room, you do not want me to cut the cheese."

Jason could feel the slight discomfort at Katie's little tugs on his emotions and he quirks an eyebrow. He didn't know Eric as well as his family, for sure, but this new development did seem a little unlike the Pent brother.

Trent and Jeff exchange blank looks before looking back to Katie dumbly. Jeff finally shakes his head. "He was back at the ranch about... I don't know... three weeks ago?"

Trent nods. "Yeah."

"He... never said a word about a woman." Jeff's expression was one of bafflement. "That's... interesting."

Trent shrugs. "Stranger things have happened, I guess."

"Well, yeah but... you'd think we woulda heard something, or... something." All Jeff can do is shrug too. "I guess we'll find out more tomorrow."
