Unloaded

Katie can't help but laugh as she turns her head to look at Hunter. She enjoyed just spending time with him too. It was nice, it felt good, and just having someone to talk to who really had no part in this all made it slightly easier to talk about.

"Ha, I'm not trying to make him jealouse. I'm not like that. I am just simply trying to have my own friends and not sit at home twiddling my thumbs."

Letting out a sigh again Katie looks at the sky remember what had happened when they were at the park with Sandy and Kaylee. Even though they hadn't talked about it and everything seemed fine it still hurt knowing that whole thing had taken place.

"I guess you could say maybe I am the one who is jealous.  All Jason talks about anymore is Sandy this and Sandy that, Sandy picked a time for all of us to go bowling...Do you think I ever get invited? No...of course not why would I? And than when he gets a text from her he gets this smile on his face...and...I do feel like whacking him over the head."

Sitting up Katie just than realized she had been rambling. Completely unloading on Hunter and telling him more than maybe he wanted to hear. She couldn't help it though it really was some stuff that had been bothering her and Hunter just happened to be the prime target.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to just unload on you. Just...When I talk to Jason about it he thinks I am being mean I can see it in his eyes when I mentioned Sandy the other day. Than Rick keeps telling me it will take time for things to work out...I just...everyone says this is normal...but its far from that to me."

Continuing to just rub Jared's legs Grace gives a nod. He'd had a dream, that had to be good. It meant his mind was trying to push through his memories.

"I wouldn't give up hope yet. Hey...maybe you dont live around here and thats why no one has come to see you! or maybe you could ask you mom about family."

Finally stopping Grace pulls a towl from her bag and an ice pack. Setting it a side she takes the wires off of Jared's leg and puts it on the other. Placing the ice pack on the one she had just worked on. Going around the bed she does that same thing, and starts to rub it as well.

"So you know, you and your brother dont get along, You father passed away, your mom is greek and you know how to flirt..."

Grace gives a grin.

"...You know more about your family than I know about mind. I never got to meet my parents. I lived most of my life in an orphanage not because my parents didn't want me but because they didn't have much money and from what I was told they though I would have a better chance else where."

Talking about her past Grace continues to smile. There was no bitterness in her voice, or anger on her face. The past was the past and she had accepted it. It had also drawn her closer to God and shaped her into who she was now.

"Sometimes I think about finding them, but I figured why? There is so much time lost there that really there is no point. I have my adopted family and to me...they are my real family. I even have a little Neice now too. She is new my sister in law had her last month. But ya know...even if everything is ok...I think there is still and always will be a longer somewhere to know my real parents even if I have accepted everything. Know what I mean?"

Sitting down at the table Stacy was quite comfortable. She let Ashlee have her own space talking with Dylan while she talked with Eric. But at the though and mention of what to eat her eyes scan the menu for another time trying to figure it out.

"I am kind of at a toss up between the shrimp scampi and the Scallops with risotto. I think I am leaning twords the scampi though."

"I already know what I want. I would like to get the breaded jumbo shrimp with lemon butter sause and the backed potato with lobster on it. I think that looks really good."

Closing her menu Ashlee herself new she had to or she would look over the menu again and want something different this time. It was always like that when she went out to eat. The more she looked the more she wanted to try something different.

Turning to Dylan she gives a smile wondering if he had figured out what he wanted to order. He could take his time no one was in a rush. She did want to help him relax though.

"Hey, now that I am learning how to ride when I get better maybe we can ride together. I bet that would be fun."

Looking and listing to her daughter Stacy gives another smile. She was so proud of how her daughter had turned out and how good she was. Every day was a blessing and made her prouder and prouder. Giving a glance back to Eric she just smiles.

"Thanks for sharing this special day with us. I know it means a lot to Ashlee and I both."

Jealous

"I like seafood," Eric agrees. "Dylan?"

Dylan had been paying more attention to the scenery than the conversation and looks quickly from the window. "Um, yeah, that's fine."

"Good. Then seafood it is." Eric gestures out the windshield. "Once we get into town, you'll want to take a right at the first stoplight."

It didn't take too much longer until the little group had made it into town and to the restaurant. They were just early enough that it wasn't too busy yet, which was just fine.

Getting inside and finding a nice table, Eric sits opposite Dylan, so Stacy and Ashlee can be across from each other too. After they are given water and menus, they're left alone for just a little while.

Dylan scans the menu having absolutely no idea what to get either. This wasn't the most expensive place but it wasn't cheap either. He wasn't sure what he should choose and didn't want to pick something too expensive. He opts to wait and see what the others are having first.

Eric quirks an eyebrow, cocking his head at his own menu. "I may not be able to decide," he muses. "Although lobster is sounding mighty good."

"Right." Hunter didn't really understand, but it was obvious that Katie felt she was being treated unfairly - enough so that she was hurt. At least Hunter could sense it. It was all over her face and in her tone. "I told you next time he made you feel bad to whack him upside the head."

He lies on his back again, contemplating the whole thing. "So... really, you're hanging out with me for spite." He grins. "If you're trying to make him jealous though, we should probably be seen somewhere more public than this next time."

He turns his head a little to look at Katie again. "Although... I must say... this is nice."

Jared grins, finding out Grace was single. At least now he wouldn't feel guilty for his silly banter with her.

Watching everything she was doing, he takes interest in how she was hooking everything up. It was obvious she was skilled in this area - it was beyond him. He did feel a very faint tingle though, so that must be good.

Her question makes him shake his head. "Nah. I've almost given up. Although I had a weird dream last night.  I was a kid and there was another boy... I woke up wondering if it was my brother, but I don't know."

He falls silent for a moment, toying with the edge of his blanket. "My mom and brother are the only two people that have come to visit me. Nobody else has or even contacted me or anything. It... kinda makes me wonder why, ya know? Like... there's obviously some history between me and Justin, but I wonder if maybe he's not the only person I've ticked off or something."

waiting for nothing

Just quiet for a moment at Hunters comment about Jason and her Katie lets the warm breeze pass over her. They wernt at odds so to say but they wernt ok either. It seemed like they were drifting farther apart, and spending time together was less and less.

"No not really at odds just...its just...the whole connection thing and...out time spend together had been less and less. I sit at home waiting for him to call or ask me to go out with his friends too...but it just...it never happens."

Letting out a heavy sigh Katie flops down on her back. She didn't care if she got sand or grass on her. Looking up at the sky was to pretty and as her mind wondered on Jason and how much fun he was having...she tried even hard not too it hurt to know she was missing out.

"So if he can go out with his friends, I guess I can go out with mine too. I dont think it would be to fare for me to continue sitting around and waiting for nothing right?"

Sitting in the backseat Ashlee thinks for a moment. What did she want for dinner? It would be something that she didn't have often but something everyone would want. Going through the options again she finally smiled.

"How about seafood? As long as everyone else dosent mind."

Looking at her daughter in the rear view mirror and than over to Eric Stacy gives a smile at her daughters taste. She didnt mind seafood at all and it was something they didn't have often.

"That sounds great with me if it is with everyone else."

Grace gives a laugh as she goes over to Jared and pulls up his pants leg places some of the sticky pads onto it and than hooking the wire up. Doing her best not to put them in spots where they would hurt coming off.

"Thats a good question and the answer would be...no. I don't so your in the clear for now."

Once finished Grace turns it on a very low setting so Jared could get use to it and than turns it up. Seeing his toes twitch a little more she gives a nod and sets the device down while it was still on.

"See how your toes are moving on there own from the eletric jolts? Thats a good thing it means you nerves arnt damaged and there is much hope that with lots of work you will walk again."

Pulling a chair over to the bed Grace sits down and working around the wires she starts to rub his leg as she tries to get the blood pumping in them again. It would help and than after would come icing it, than heating it. Continuing to rub she tries to make a little small talk too.

   "So...any luck remembering anything today?"

"I think thats a great idea. Ice cream and the Antique place might be fun."

Beth liked that idea and who new maybe she would be able to find a few things for around her apartment. She'd like to get some new stuff in that place, some stuff she could call her own and really enjoy.

"I'm kind of having a hankering for some frozen yourget with all the unhealthy fixings."

Wuss

Hunter glances at Katie again, a wry grin curling the corner of his mouth. "Hmm... maybe. Wasn't so bad 'til I let my mind wander places I didn't want to go."

Flopping onto his back, he puts his hands behind his head and stares up at the stars. "Life used to be a whole lot less complicated. Then one day you come to a fork in the road and go right instead of left. And from then on out, nothing is ever the same and you can't go back no matter how hard you try."

It wasn't often he talked about these things with anyone. It wasn't often he thought about it at all. But ever since that night seeing Kyle, it had become impossible to ward off thoughts of the past.

Quiet for a few minutes, Hunter suddenly turns over to prop himself up on his elbow, facing Katie. "So girls with boyfriends don't usually go off with another guy late at night for a stroll on the beach." He searches her with curiosity. He'd gotten the idea from the other night at dinner that things between her and Jason weren't all that great, but he still didn't have his head wrapped around that whole thing. And...it changed the subject from talk of himself.

"You and Jason on the outs?"

Seeing Stacy enter the room, Eric stands up from the table. Her attractiveness tonight did not escape his eyes, though he keeps that thought to himself. She did look very nice... beautiful, in fact. But there was no proper way to even try saying that. He picks up his hat and fiddles with the brim. "Well there's plenty of places to choose from. Once we get to town, I can point a few things out and you gals can decide where to go."

Dylan does his best to relax... it isn't easy though. He did feel pretty out of place. He was friends with Ashlee... he was okay with Eric... he was... so-so with Stacy... and that was it. But seeing Ashlee's smile, he's reminded of why he'd said yes.

Eric goes to the door and holds it open for the others while putting on his hat. "Alrighty... all aboard that's goin' aboard."

It doesn't take long to pile in the car and be on their way. Dylan sits in back with Ashlee, remaining quiet for the most part, but trying to engage in conversation when included. He really was trying. He was just... outside the loop. Or so it felt. But he was doing his best. Eric sat in the front with Stacy, feeling... much more relaxed than he'd anticipated. It was easy to talk with her, and laughing with her and Ashlee made the atmosphere light. He was glad he'd been invited. It made him feel special to be included in celebrating Ashlee's birthday, and it was something that he quietly cherished in his heart.

"Okay... so... what's the birthday girl hungry for?" He turns around to look back at Ashlee, grinning. They'd be to town in just a few minutes. "We've got... steak... seafood... hamburgers... Chinese... Mexican... fast food..."

Seeing Grace, Jared perks up a little and shuts off the television. He grins and shakes his head. "I think you do mean torture."

Looking at the equipment and the wires, for the first time, he's a little nervous. It did nothing to his determination though. He nods at everything she says, ready for anything. "Okay. If I scream like a girl, you'll know it hurt." A new grin surfaces. "But if I do, you can't tell anybody because then they'd think I was a wuss."

Pulling himself up a little more wasn't easy, but his shoulders were so sore from lying in this position for too long. Oh to get up and walk.

"I'm ready when you are, Miss PT." He quirks an eyebrow. "Oh and by the way, you gave me permission to flirt, but I never asked if you've got a husband or boyfriend. I wouldn't want to get out of here just to have some guy put me right back in again for hitting on his girl."

Second Nature

Smiling at his comment about her balance Katie takes her helmet off and dismounts from the bike. It was funny to hear someone say that but at the same time it was kind of nice. To actually have someone tell you, you were good at something with simple words.

"I guess balance is a second nature to me since I grew up on a ranch and rode horses."

Unzipping her own jacket and taking it off Katie throws it over the seat of the motorcycle. It was to nice of a night out to worry about a jacket. If it hadn't been for the bike ride she wouldn't have even bothered bringing it.

Taking a spot next to Hunter Katie sits down with her legs stretched out in front of her. Taking in a deep breath of air she could smell the warmth, the water, it all tickled her senses. She could remember when her and Jason would take rides out here. It was always fun and they would always laugh. Katie wondered if there would be more times like that...or if being left out, and having lunches together was the only road for them now. What was it that made her different from his friends?

"Your welcome Hunter. I don't mind spending time with you after all and its better than sitting around for something that you know wont happen."

Looking over at Hunter Katie studys him for a long moment. There was something about him, something different tonight. It was almost like a past had come out of no where on him and now he longed for something he no longer had. For a moment Katied wondered how simaler they were, yet so different.

"Tonight, you seem to be far off somewhere else. I would guess you had about as good a day as I had."

"Come on mom, you look fine can we go meet the others now?"

Ashlee sat at the small table in the bunk house a nice shirt one, and her good jeans and sneakers. Her hair tied back in a braid with a blue ribbon at the end. She'd been waiting about ten minutes for her mom to get ready and though there was an irritated tone in her voice she couldn't help the grin that formed on he face. She new she was trying to look her best...since Eric was going after all.

"Yeah yeah yeah I am coming"

Stepping out of the bathroom Stacy had her good pants on and a black shirt her tan jacket over top. Her hair was still wet and allowed to fall where it wanted put it almost looked like she had spent so much time on it.

   "Ready to go now mom?"

"I think so. Lets meet up with the others ok?"

Stepping outside the bunk house Ashlee and Stacy make there way to the mess hall. Stacy wasn't sure where they would eat at but she wanted it to be someplace nice. Maybe Eric could help her with that.

Entering the dinning hall Stacy couldn't help but let her smile grow a little bigger seeing Eric and how good he looked tonight. This was the best she had seen him dressed but she sure liked it. Turning and seeing Ashlee go over to Dylan she gives a little nod. She was happy to see her daughter had made a friend and that Dylan had as well. He needed friends, good friends.

"Alright, I figured I would drive, and as to where to go...I'm not sure since we are still new here. But we can roll out if you guys want and see what happens. Hows that sounds?"

Ashlee gives a laugh standing next to Dylan. Looking to him she gives a big smile than looks back to her mom.

"Anything sounds good to me, I am starving."

Heading to Jared's room this morning Grace was a little late but not by to much. A bag was at her side and his folder in her hands once again. This was be the start, the first step to the slow process but the outcome, it would be great she hopped.

"Good Morning Jared! Sorry I am running a little late. I had to get all my tourcher...I mean equipment."

Grace give a little grin with humor in her eyes. Some of the stuff she used did look pretty bad but all in all it wasn't. Going into the bags and pulling out a masheen with a few wires on it she holds it up for Jared to see.

"We are going to try and stimulate you muscles. Its kind of like eltric shock but not enough to kill you. Only enough to warm your leg up. I'll start with your leg than work my way up to your spine. We will do that eat day, along with icing, and normal movements to try and get everything to stop being stiff. It will take a little bit but it will be a good start. If at any time you feel pain just let me know. ok?"

Thanks

Passing a vehicle and smoothly turning back into their own lane, Hunter listens to the way she felt about riding on the motorcycle. "Yeah..." He knew what it was. It was what had him addicted to the road. Shifting gears, the bike lurches a little before shooting forward at a faster speed. Hunter's eyes remain glued to the road and he leans forward a little bit more, making sure Katie leaned with him. "It's called freedom."

He didn't take the straight shot to the lake tonight. The ride was too nice to waste, and he ends up taking a different road that cost them an extra fifteen minutes before looping back to the highway. Eventually though, they do wind up at the lake, finding the parking lot almost deserted. It wasn't surprising at this hour, although some nights there were parties going on. Not tonight though.

Slowing down to a crawl, Hunter steers his bike between the curbs, driving onto the grass and only stopping once they'd reached the sand. Cutting the engine, he lets the bike rest to the side on the kickstand, and takes off his helmet, running a hand through his hair. Sliding off first, he's careful not to bump Katie, then holds the bike steady so she can dismount as well.

"You've got good balance," he comments as he locks the helmets to the bike. "I didn't have to worry about you pulling me off for a crash landing."

Grinning at her, he nods his head towards the beach before tucking his hands in his pockets and walking forward. His pace is slow... almost thoughtful as he walks through the sand, stopping a short ways from the gently lapping water. The moon shone brightly, reflecting off the small ripples. "I used to come here all the time," he muses, scanning the water. He could still hear the laughter. The voices. Family. Friends.

Feeling the warmth of the evening, he unzips his jacket and sighs deeply. Part of him was enjoying this evening. He was glad he wasn't alone. Katie was nice company. Coming to the lake was always fun, along with the ride. And part of him... part of him was still sitting next to that box in his living room.

Easing down to sit in the sand, he rests his arms on his knees, keeping his eyes on the lake. "Thanks for coming along tonight, Katie." He looks over at her, his expression genuine. "It's... been a while since I've been able to take a girl anywhere without... well, without more expected out of me, I guess." His eyes go back to the water. Katie wasn't that kind of girl. And he was glad of it.

Eric tips his hat back on his head and grins down at Ashlee. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."

Watching her head off to her and Stacy's bunkhouse, he shakes his head. She was something else. And... he'd really enjoyed himself today too. It was fun working with Ashlee. She was so easy to work with and she followed his directions well. Maybe... just maybe since Eric hadn't had his own family, he was getting a chance at something else. Maybe he'd never be a father, but maybe this was as close as God could give him. He wouldn't take it for granted.

Turning back to the barn, he finishes up with Static, then heads to his own bunkhouse. What he'd told Ashlee was true - he did have other stuff to do before tonight. But it wasn't barn work. It was icing his leg and putting it up for a while. He'd already done far too much today than he should have, but he was not going to miss out on going to town. He'd promised and would stick to it...

...By early evening, Eric was back in the dining hall, waiting for the other three. He wasn't sure who was driving what, so he'd opted just to wait and see. He didn't even know where Stacy had planned to take Ashlee, so he'd wound up in a nice pair of jeans and a casual but nice collared shirt, and his boots that were in better shape than his barn boots. It wasn't his Sunday best, but he didn't want to overdo it if they were going somewhere casual. His hair was still a bit damp from his shower, and he smelled of fresh aftershave.

Easing down at one of the tables, he sets his good cowboy hat aside to wait.

Dylan slowly walks from his bunkhouse, feeling a bit awkward. He'd cleaned up some, especially since he'd been working the barn earlier, but he really wasn't so sure about this. He'd told Ashlee he'd go to town with them but... now he wondered if he should have declined. He'd dug up a pair of jeans without holes in them and he'd scrounged around to find a t-shirt that either wasn't stained or offensive. It was the best he could do on short notice.

"Bright and early. Got it." Jared gives Grace a thumbs up and a smile. He wasn't totally convinced any of this therapy would really work, but he was willing to give it a shot. "I'll be here."

...And he was. After being woken up for the umpteenth time for his medication, it was a boring early-morning show on television that kept him awake. Half his breakfast sat to the side getting cold. It tasted awful today and he just couldn't stomach any more of it.

Zach grins and shrugs. "I dunno... there's an antique mall down the street... wanna get some ice cream then go there?" He wasn't a big antique fan, but it was something to do, and he did enjoy looking around at all the old stuff. And every once in a while there were good deals too.

Comforting

Putting the helmet on and getting on behind the bike Katie can't help but smile herself as she can hear Hunter loud and clean. She was impressed to say the least but than again should she be surprised? She'd never been to a bike race, let along a car race but from seeing reports they made some good money. So why wouldn't Hunter go all out with what he had?

"He doesn't have a bike like this but I'll be ok. Hold on tight, don't move around to much...lets do this."

Making sure her arms were around Hunter good before they stared Katie was ready. Taking the easy start through town Katie didn't mind. She could be more relaxed, get the feel of the bike and enjoy the scenes. It was always different being on a bike than in a car and everything seemed to look differently to her too.

Coming to the highway Katie new she better hang on a little bit better. As the bike starts to go faster and the lights wiz by she was happy she was right as her grip tightens a little more. She wasn't scared though she had gone fast with Jason before and for some reason she just new Hunter was in control.

"I think you picked the highway for one reason...you just wanted me to hold you tighter."

Though Hunter couldn't see her a grin formed on Katie's face anyways. There was a joking tone in her voice though so he would know she was. Continuing to watch as everything moved past every quicker Katie couldn't help the feeling of being free. It was almost like being on a horse. You were open, able to move and just...be.

"I've always enjoyed being on the back of a bike. There is just something about it thats nice, comforting almost."

Sliding down off the horse Ashlee stumbles a little but doesn't fall down. It would get easier with each time she did it for the she was sure. She just had to get use to it and no one got it one the first try for sure. Once getting her footing again and having Eric hold out the rains to her Ashlee beams as she takes them smiling.

   "Wow, thanks."

Walking with the horse and Eric back into the barn Ashlee sets to work with him unsaddling the horses, rubbing them down, and brushing them. Every moment was like a moment of bliss for Ashlee and she loved having Eric helping her.

Once finished she leans in and gives Moonbeam a kiss on the nose and a gentil pat on the neck before turning. She didn't want this to end but she new that though it was her birthday she still had school work and should probley work on that a little before dinner.

"Thanks again Eric. I should probley head to my bunk and get ready for tonight and work a little bit on my school work. See you tonight?"

Walking outside with Zach Beth takes in a deep breath of the air. It really was a nice day out today and Beth couldn't imagine staying locked inside. She didn't have anything to do tonight that she new of, other than a little cleaning.

"Sure we can figure something else out to do...I dont think I have anything going on tonight."

Turning to Zach she gives a smile Beth really was having a nice time spending the day with him. It was nice to get out and do something different. Spending time was different from spending time with Justin. Not a bad thing just different, and it was kind of nice to have different personality in the mix.

"But this time you pick what we do, I picked the last time."

Grace gives a laugh as she stands looking down at Jared her eyes giving a little sparkle. There was something in his eyes that told her he was stubborn, hard headed and wouldn't stop till he got what he wanted. She was happy to see that and his personality was a good match, she liked it.

"Remember as long as you keep it clean you can...if not than I revoke that right."

Giving a smile she didn't think she really would have anything to worry about. Something told her it would be in good fun and no harm would be done. It could be because he had no memorie of his past or maybe she just trusting.

"Alright, if you don't have any other questions...I'll see you tomorrow bright and early."

Precious Cargo

A start over. There was hope in that statement. Even so, Jared just wanted to know... he just wanted to know who he really was.

Grace's question bring his concentration back around again and he scoffs. "You kidding? The sooner the better in my book." He pauses. "Not that I have a book. But if I did, I'm sure that's what it would say." He manages a new little grin. "Besides, I wouldn't want to have to wait several days to flirt with you again since I have permission now."

Zach grins and reaches over to scratch Thimble's head. "Well in that case, I'll keep you informed about her."

Showing Beth the rest of the shelter didn't take long. He explained all he did - mostly helping with cleaning cages, feeding and exercising, and he gave Beth contact information in case she did want to come volunteer sometime too. By the time they were finished, it was still early afternoon yet, and it felt too nice of a day to waste.

Meandering out to the parking lot in the sunshine, Zach puts his hands in his pockets and glances to the side at Beth. "So... you got plans for the rest of the day? Or you wanna go do something?"

Eric laughs and nods at Ashlee. "You sure are." He wondered for a moment who was having more fun - her or him.

Though Eric wanted to just let Ashlee ride the rest of the day, he knew they couldn't. But he does let her stay in the saddle as long as he can.

Finally pulling to a stop in front of the gate, he looks over at Ashlee, grinning. "Well, cowgirl... I think we better dismount for the day. I think we both got things we need to do before we head into town."

Dismounting Static, he walks around to Moonbeam to hold her steady so Ashlee can slide off. Once she was off, he hands her the reins. "Job's not over 'til we get unsaddled. I'll help, but you can do the honors."

Though most of his face was hidden in his helmet, Hunter's eyes twinkle and his cheek rise, proving he was smiling at Katie's remark. "I think I'd like to see that."

He hands her the helmet and thumbs to the bike. "She's all warmed up."

Mounting the motorcycle again, he makes sure Katie gets settled behind him with her feet where they needed to be before he starts up the engine. "By the way, the helmets have mic's in them." He grins, knowing Katie could hear him. "So don't scream - you'll make me deaf."

Pulling away from the curb, he keeps the speed down for now. "I don't know what kind of bike your boyfriend's got, but you might wanna hang on." He'd be careful, but he knew this was different than other motorcycles, especially for a passenger. If they were gonna have any fun at all, he'd have to feel her hang onto him first - otherwise he'd be afraid of losing her off the back.

Driving through town, Hunter stays within the speed limit this time. Once they hit the highway though, he gradually takes advantage of the sparse traffic. Leaning low, he keeps his eyes on the road, remaining alert to Katie's movements to make sure she was still on tight. Satisfied she was, he tops the speed limit, watching the lights and signs whiz by. He kicks it into a higher gear but not quite as much as he would if he were alone - not when he had precious cargo sitting behind him.

Ms. Jefferson

Grace nods as she is quiet for a moment. She understood what Jared was saying. Not knowing who he was could be a scary thing, and getting to know it again even worse when you don't know if its good or bad. She would probley react the same way about it all too.

"Well if you weren't a good person than that doesn't mean you can't be a good person now. It's almost like a start over."

Giving a smile to Jared she tried to help him look on the bright side. She did believe too that with God's help and kindness anyone could be forgiven, and Jared was no acceptation. Maybe this was just his wake up call to get it together.

"So tomorrow should we give it a go on stimulating your legs or would you like to give it a few days?"

Holding the cat close Beth can't help but smile at the little purrs that came from the fuzz ball. She was so cute, and so lovey Beth really enjoyed holding her. This how day had been really good so far, and now this was just wonderful too.

"She is so cute and fuzzy I don't understand how anyone would not want to adopt her."

Pulling the kitty away a little bet Beth looks down into her blue eyes. It broke her heart to think that no one would want this cat and they would have to let her go soon. The can't hadn't done anything wrong so why should it be the one to have its life end.

"Well...if no one ends up wanting her...I'd take her. She's cute and I could use some company around the apartment. It's to quiet there sometimes."

Doing as Eric said as he lets her take hold herself Ashlee couldn't help the smile that spread even bigger across her face. His instructions were easy to follow and there was no harsh tone in his voice so it was nice to listen to what he had to say.

"Wow, I'm really doing it...I'm riding a horse."

Gently patting Moonbeams neck  Ashlee quickly returns both hands to the rains as the horse lifted its let a little bit to get an ich. Giving a laugh she couldn't help how silly she must look but she really didn't care either. This was way to much fun.

"I'll really be a cowgirl now!"

Hearing the bike rev outside Katie new it must be Hunter. Stopping in the living room she gives a little wave to Ryder and Thirteen as she puts her denim jacket on. Her hair was nicely put back in a poney tail and her holds jeans with the small hole in the knee was her atire.

"I'm going to be going out for a little bit. I got my keys so you can lock the door if you go to bed and I am not home. Have a good night guys."

Slipping her phone into her back pocket before turning from the living room and heading outside closing the door behind her. Making her way down the sidewalk and getting to Hunter Katie puts her hands in her pockets and gives him a small smile.

"At this rate your going to wake the whole neighborhood and have noise Ms. Jefferson knocking on my door tomorrow asking a million and one questions. Though I wouldn't have any problem to tell her to mine her own bees wax."

Bad Person

Seriously? Hunter can't help his surprise as he reads Katie's reply. For being Elite, she sure wasn't cautious. He could take her anywhere he wanted once she was on his bike, and there were places she wouldn't stand a chance. He wouldn't pull any stunts like that, of course, but how did she know? He could be driving drunk right now for all she knew. Did she trust him that much after just one dinner? Was she that perceptive that she'd seen through his fake reputation? Or was she really the type to just throw caution to the wind?

Regardless of Katie's reasoning to accept his offer, he was kinda glad she had. It was better than continuing the evening alone with thoughts he didn't want to deal with.

Checking the address once more, he pockets his phone. It would take him at least ten minutes just to go home, get his extra helmet then be at her place. Of course... he could cut off a minute or two if he wanted...

...Pulling up to the curb in front of the house, Hunter sees several vehicles and puts two and two together that there was more than one person living here. It didn't stop him, though, from revving his engine loudly to announce his arrival.

Hitting the kickstand, he cuts the motor and flips up his helmet visor before dismounting. Unhooking the extra helmet from the back, he waits for Katie.

Looking down at Ashlee, Eric returns the smile. Seeing how happy she was, he was glad he'd decided to teach her how to ride. He'd thought by now she would have accepted the offer from someone else... but knowing she hadn't made him feel... well... it made him feel special.

"You're very welcome. I'm glad you're having fun." There was a whole lot more he could say right now but he would wait. Today was a special day. Ashlee's birthday. Her first day in the saddle. He'd let her enjoy this to the fullest and would hold his speeches about learning to ride for the next time.

He steers both horses around the corner of the paddock, allowing them to walk a little faster. After a couple more rounds, he watches Moonbeam carefully, noting that the mare had fallen into step next to Static, following the gelding's lead as she was supposed to. Leaning out of his saddle, Eric reaches over and unclips the lead line, then gives Ashlee full rein.

"You just keep those reins loose and don't worry about steering," he directs. His voice remained steady and gentle. "Moonbeam knows the route." Allowing just a little more distance between the horses, his eyes remain on the mare and Ashlee while his hands keep Static under control as well. It had been a long time since he'd done this, but without even realizing it, he'd fallen back into the role without so much as blinking.

Moonbeam heaves a weary sigh as she walks, and Eric chuckles. "She's so relaxed, I think she might fall asleep," he teases.

Jared laughs outright and shakes his head at Grace. "It's a deal. One thing a guy learns fast around here is that flirting with the old stuffy nurses never seems to bring about the desired effect."

Grace's encouragement about his memory brings a softer smile, but he shakes his head, leaning back into his pillow. "My mom's tried. I've seen pictures but nothing rings a bell. All I know really is that Mom's Greek... she lives by herself... I guess my dad died when I was a kid... she likes to cook and go to church..." There really wasn't much he knew at all, even after Lydia's frequent visits. It was always just small talk. Which Jared appreciated, but it never gave him much more information to go on.

"...And I've got a brother who hates me but he won't tell me why." His eyes regain a dull look. "I did something to him... don't know what it was... but it must've been bad. Sometimes I'm afraid to remember who I was... I'm afraid I'll find out I wasn't a nice person or something."

His eyes glance to Grace as he realizes maybe she hadn't wanted to know all that. But for some reason, he didn't feel all that awkward talking to her about it. He hadn't admitted to anyone what he'd just told her. But...it didn't bother him. It actually felt good to finally say it out loud.

"And this is Thimble." Zach opens up the little cage and pulls out a fluffy gray cat who immediately starts to purr. He grins and gives her some loving before letting Beth hold her. He'd been showing her around the animal shelter, introducing her to the people and the animals both. He had admitted he wished he could afford to quit his job at the auto dealer and just volunteer here all the time, but that wasn't possible or realistic. He did love it here though. And he was having a ball showing Beth around. She was a breath of fresh air after being with his coworkers all week, and lunch had been fun too. He didn't know about after this, but maybe they could hang out a while longer this afternoon too.

"She's been here a little while now," Zach explains about the cat. His smile fades just a little. "Her time is getting too close for comfort so I've been trying to find her a home."

"You seem... distracted. Is everything all right?"

Justin glances up at his mom across the peninsula in the kitchen. He shifts a little on the barstool and steals a slice of green pepper to chew on. "Yeah, I suppose." He had a lot on his mind today, for sure, especially after his session with Mackenzie and his brief visit with Jared, along with an impromptu stop-in to see Scott and check on his progress. But none of those were bothering him at the moment.

Lydia eyes him with suspicion and wipes her hands on her apron. Leaning on the counter, she studies her son. "Why don't you talk about it? Maybe it will help."

"Talk about what?"

"Whatever it is that is troubling you."

Justin quirks a little grin. "Is it really that obvious?"

Lydia chuckles. "Not for anybody but your mother."

Justin sighs and shakes his head. "Oh, it's nothing. Just... I don't know..." He did too know. He'd spent the day today working instead of fishing like he'd planned. He'd just... lost the mood. "Beth met this guy and I'm not so sure I like him."

Lydia lifts an eyebrow and turns to stir the pot on the stove. "Is she dating this... this guy?"

"I don't know. Maybe. She's been out with him a couple times I guess."

"And... you do not like this?"

"Why would I not like it? Beth and I are just friends."

Lydia glances over her shoulder. "And you are happy with this?"

"Well sure. Of course. Why not?" Justin steals another vegetable.

Lydia finishes stirring and returns to the counter. Chopping some mushrooms, she is quiet for several minutes. "Do you remember the story of the two little birds?"

"Huh?"

"Maybe I only told it to Jared when he was young."

Justin shrugs. "I guess I don't remember that one. Why?"

"There were two little birds," Lydia explains. "The first one broke his wing and he could not fly. He stayed near his nest high in the tree where he was safe and happy. Soon he met another little bird. She had a broken wing too. They became good friends and the first little bird helped her regain strength in her wing."

Lydia continues cooking as she tells the story. "One day the second little bird's wing was all healed. She made new friends and was so happy she could fly that she flew high into the sky. The first little bird was very sad. He was all alone."

After a long pause, Justin looks at his mother expectantly. "And?"

Lydia smiles and adds the vegetables to the pot. "The little bird suddenly realized that while he was taking care of the second little bird, his own wing had healed."

Justin furrows his brow. "So... he flew away too?"

Lydia shrugs. "I do not know. That is where the story ends. Some people say he stayed near his nest because it was safe. Some people say he flew because he wanted to taste true living."

Justin fingers a slice of mushroom before popping it into his mouth. He knew good and well what his mother was saying. It didn't take a genius to figure out the moral of the story.

Lydia pauses her work and smiles again. "There is no right or wrong. It is only what you want..." She pats his chest. "In here."

5 or 10

Sitting up a little straighter now Katie new Hunter would be replying. Not wanting to run the risk of falling asleep she new laying down was a bad option. Hearing the phone beep once again Katie hits the button on her phone to make it light up and than sits back for a second.

Did she want to drive herself or ride with Hunter on his bike? She'd only ever been on Jason's bike before but riding with Hunter it might be fun, and he seemed to be pretty trustworthy after there later encounter. So maybe it would be fun?

Alright, I got a jacket from the times I rode with Jason. Come pick me up in about 5 or 10 minutes so I can get read. See ya soon.

Adding her address into the text Katie sets the phone down and heads to the bathroom to clean up a little bit before Hunter got there. She new nothing had to be perfect but she wanted to at least look half way presentable.

Ashlee does her best to try and relax a little bit every once in a while shifting a little to tightening her hands about the little bit of rains she had. She was ok it was just something she had to get use too. But aside from her nerves she sure was having fun.

"Thank you so much Eric...I haven't even hardly done anything yet and I am having a blast."

Turning a little Ashlee flashes Eric a big smile. A twinkle in her eyes almost like she was a little kid again. She was reliving her childhood, one that had been missing something very important...a father. Though Eric wasn't blood she still looked up to him and it was the closest thing she had...and she enjoyed his company so much.

Seeing the look in Jared's eyes Grace could see the will he had to walk again. That alone was a good start and she new it would make things just a little bit easier. It always was when someone worked with her instead if against her.

"Than we should get along just fine. I'll even let you continue to flirt with me as long as you keep in decent."

Throwing Jared a wink before he mentions about his memorie Grace sits back in the chair a little bit closing the folder she had. She couldn't imagine how it must feel to have lost ones memorie and forever everything that happened to you. Not even being able to remember your own name for family. Grace felt bad for him.

"You can't remember anything?  Not even the littlest of details? The smallest things can help you remeber. Maybe your mom can bring in some pictures!"

4/21/12

Up 2 u

No sooner had Hunter pocketed his phone when it beeps. Grinning a little, he flips it back open again. Maybe Katie wasn't kidding when she said she'd answer at all hours. Sure enough, it was her replying. And... she said yes? Hunter was honestly a bit surprised. It had been a long shot but she seemed willing.

Hitting "reply," Hunter types out a return message.

Woot. Yeah meet me there or i can pick u up on my bike if i knew where u lived. I got a helmet if u got a jacket. Up 2 u.

He rolls his eyes but hits "send." She wouldn't say yes. But he had to throw that in anyway. Deciding to wait for her answer, he pulls his bike off to the side away from the pumps.

Eric waits patiently for Ashlee to get up in the saddle, smiling that it only took her two tries. He goes around the other side to make sure her feet were in the stirrups properly and gives her leg a pat. He knew she was excited and nervous, and that was okay - he'd expect nothing less from someone who had waited so long to ride. Moonbeam was as steady as a rock, so he wasn't worried about her reaction either.

Going around to Static, he mounts up too, gathering his own reins plus Moonbeam's. "Okay... here we go..." Heading forward, he keeps both horses at a slow walk, knowing that it would feel much faster than it really was, for Ashlee the first few rides.

Steering the horses around the paddock, he keeps his eye on Ashlee. "Try to relax," he encourages with a soft chuckle. He wasn't going to give her many instructions today - today he just wanted her to enjoy herself and not worry about being proper. Next time, he'd start telling her how to sit better in the saddle.

Listening to Grace, Jared wasn't too surprised at the little speech. He knew that just because he moved a toe, that didn't automatically mean that all was well. He still might not be able to walk. Although it was still a good sign. Grace's words seem to stimulate a stubbornness deep down, and he wonders if perhaps he'd had that kind of personality before.

The final question lingers in the air, until he nods. "I have nothing else to work towards," he answers. "And I don't want to live the rest of my life as as cripple if I don't have to. If there's any hope at all, I'm not going to give up. And even if there wasn't hope, I probably wouldn't give up either, so I guess you're stuck with me."

He gives her another wry grin. "Too bad you can't work on my brain like you do my legs. Then maybe I'd be able to tell you about myself." Though he was trying to be humorous about his memory loss, his eyes betrayed him by revealing he wasn't quite as chipper as he liked to appear. There was depression there whether he wanted to admit it or not. He holds his grin anyway though.

False Hope and Faith

Sitting at home Katie sat on the couch bored out of his mind. She new Jason was out with his friends tonight and though he hadn't said Sandy was there but she had a feeling she was. But to save a fight she didn't say anything about it at all.

About to doze off Katie gives a little jump at her phone going off. Strange someone would be texting her this late. Maybe it was Jason? Part of Katie thought it would be nice if it was but it was doubtful. Pulling her phone out Katie was disappointed that it wasnt Jason but it did make her smile that it was Hunter.

The lake...this time of night? Oh sure why not, Jas is out with his friends again so I might as well. Want me to meet you there?

Putting her boots on and finding they were the perfect fit Ashlee can't help but squeal a little more as she jumps up and heads for the door. She didn't want to wast anytime, there wasn't much time left before dinner and she wanted to get all she could in before than.

...Ashlee gives a nod to Eric as she puts her one foot into the stirrup. Trying to get up once it didn't work but Ashlee wouldn't give up, trying again she finally got it. Steadying herself Ashlee new she was nervous and wondered if Eric could see it but she was going to do this.

  "Ok, I'm ready."

Hearing Jared's humor Grace can't help but give a little laugh as her cheeks turn slightly red but she didn't mind, and after all Jared was rather good looking.

"Ah...so its not going to be my charm and your will that helps you do this but my looks?"

Pulling a chair up to the bed and sitting down Grace was ready to get down to business and let Jared know what this would involve. It was not and would not be an easy road but in the end it would be worth it.

"Well, we will start with stimulating your muscles, and nerves. Once we get those to the point where they are not still from not being used we will work on moving your legs, teaching you how to strand again. It will be long, it will be painful and I wont give you false hope if I don't think it will work. I'll be honest and upfront..but I need to know your going to give this your all and not give up. Can you do that for me?"

Grace cocks her head a little bit looking at Jared. She new God had a plan for everything, and his hand worked through everything so she had faith but still there was a difference between false hope and faith. She'd never let someone think they would be all better if they were not.

Text

Turning to look at the door, Jared was used to seeing unfamiliar people in and out of here every day. This one seemed different though - she didn't look like one of the normal nurses. She was prettier than most of them, that was for sure.

"Excitement? Oh yeah... tons." Giving Grace a wry grin, he accepts her handshake, slowly with his sore arm. Though his mood wasn't the greatest, there wasn't any point in being rude. "Physical therapy, huh? If I'da known you were it, I mighta tried harder to wiggle my toe sooner."

Faint humor twinkled in his eyes. He usually got whacked for flirting with the nurses, but he didn't have anything better to do with his boredom. He was going out of his mind, lying here day in and day out. "So what happens now?"

Eric's smile just grows even bigger as Ashlee begs her mother to let her ride. It had been worth the wait. Worth the surprise.

"Yeah you better try them boots on - otherwise we might have to postpone the riding," he teases.

Watching Ashlee, his eyes drift back to Stacy. His expression thanked her... he was grateful for her allowing him to do this....

"Alright... you ready?" Eric grins down at Ashlee as they stood in the paddock. He held both Static and Moonbeam who were both saddled and waiting. "Left foot, left stirrup and swing yourself up." He pats Moonbeam's saddle. "Since this is your first time, I'll keep hold of the reins and Static and I'll steer 'til we get the hang of this."

He gives Ashlee a wink. "Up ya go."

"Pizza and movie sounds good," Jason agrees. "In... fifteen minutes." His eyes drift close and he wraps his arms around Katie, sighing deeply. "Just fifteen minutes."

It actually turned out to be half an hour after he'd dozed off, but they were able to enjoy some supper and a movie together before Katie went home. They never did talk about Sandy or Hunter again, although that whole thing still bothered Jason, even over the next couple days. He didn't bring it up though. By now it was too late anyway to stir up anything and Katie hadn't mentioned Hunter again, so surely there was nothing there anyway for him to be uptight about.

The weekend came and went, and it wasn't until Monday that Jason told Katie he'd be out with friends again that night. He mentioned Rusty and Will, but kept Sandy's name out of it. That day after work, Jason said he'd see Katie tomorrow.

Monday night. Hunter sits on the floor of his living room, paper, pictures and other paraphernalia scattered around him. The box that had been sitting by his shelf was tipped over and half-empty. He wasn't sure what had prompted him to go through it now. Other than the fact that his buddies were all going to the riverside tonight and he hadn't really wanted to. He'd been there a million times, and tonight he didn't have a date so it would be boring. Of course he hadn't told them that. He'd told Wade that he had a girl over at his place and wouldn't be available until morning. And, as predicted, the lie was accepted and he maintained his reputation. And of course, the result was him sitting here on his floor like a lame dufus, sorting through old stuff he hadn't even wanted to look at.

Setting aside another karate medal, part of him wanted to hang them up somewhere, and part of him just wanted to forget all of them. It wasn't so much that he disliked remembering the sport... but it reminded him too much of Break Out. He'd done a lot before that group, for sure... but that was the last time he'd done anything with karate and so that's what stuck in his mind whenever he thought about anything revolving around the sport.

Sighing, he scrounges around in the box and pulls out a picture frame. Inside was a photo of him and Kyle. A lump rises in his throat. He missed having a best friend. He missed having a guy he could trust with anything. He missed hanging out and laughing. Kyle had been like a brother.

Hunter thinks about Break Out and when they'd had to say goodbye. It hadn't been fair to anybody. Nobody knew what they were going to do or how they would survive. Futures had been turned upside-down without notice. Chaos. Inward panic and dismay. For everybody... except Kyle. An opportunity had been dropped in his lap before he'd even left the team. Not only did he have Alice, but he suddenly had a bright future again, just like that.

The old jealousy starts to boil again and Hunter turns the picture face-down onto the carpet. Kyle had just walked away scott free. That was it. See ya. Gone. And everybody else still had to figure out how to survive. How did he rate, getting the girl and the future? What was so great about him that he got special treatment?

A sigh surfaces. The image of Kyle's face the other night was burned into Hunter's mind. Surprise. Displeasure. Disappointment. Irritation. Hurt. But seeing all that in Kyle's eyes hadn't brought any satisfaction. On the contrary, it had just made Hunter even more mad. A few years ago, Hunter would have calmed down and apologized right away to work things out. And now...?

Rising from the floor, Hunter leaves the mess where it is. Slipping on his motorcycle boots and grabbing his leather jacket, he's out the door, downstairs and around the corner to the small shed where he kept his bike. Releasing the padlock it takes him only a few moments to take out his motorcycle, don his helmet and hit the road.

Leaning low over the bike his eyes focus on his lane through the face shield of his helmet. The lights flew by in a blur as he leans to the right and left, weaving through traffic. A red light whizzes by as he disregards stopping at an intersection. Shifting gears, his body lowers even more. The city streets were a dangerous racetrack - even more so at this time of night - but he didn't care.

After leaving Break Out, he'd wandered a while before falling into a group of street racers. He was a quick learner and a natural behind the wheel, gaining him a few fast wins. After that, he was hooked. He'd raced both car and motorcycle, picking up the sport very quickly, which gave him a jumpstart on much-needed income. He couldn't quit though. Not after experiencing the adrenaline rush. The crowds, the booze, the excitement... it helped drown out his past whenever he wanted. Winning his current car and motorcycle had been icing on the cake. And coming to Nevada... maybe he felt drawn to his roots. Or maybe he wanted to check out the desert racing. Or maybe somewhere deep down, he'd wanted to see if his past still existed.

Missing a turning car by inches, Hunter could feel his pantleg brush the bumper. Death - or worse - missed by a mere two inches. Flashing lights suddenly appeared in his mirror. Not a surprise, but he wasn't worried. Still swerving around traffic and dodging red lights, the cop gets further and further behind. Hitting the breaks and sliding on the pavement, Hunter skids into an alley and cuts his headlight. Looking back over his shoulder, he waits a few moments before seeing the cop drive by. Poor clueless soul. Steering back out onto the street, Hunter aims in the opposite direction, speeding up again.

Half an hour later, Hunter's speed had slowed. He'd outraced two more cops and had just about been plowed down by a delivery truck. He was numb though. None of that bothered him.

Pulling into a gas station at the edge of town, he finally cuts the engine and takes off his helmet. Dismounting, he unzips his jacket and starts pumping gas, heaving a deep sigh as he waits. Maybe the lake would be a good place to go tonight. He checks his watch. It was almost ten o'clock. Most likely there would be very few people at the beach at this hour. Some quiet would be nice. A bit of star gazing. It was a far cry from a party, but it seemed to fit his mood tonight. Although... being alone wasn't so fun either.

As the pump clicks off, he hangs it back up again before heading into the station to pay. While there, he grabs a liter of Mountain Dew and a couple milky way candy bars. Back at his motorcycle, he puts his purchase in the side compartment and mounts up again. Just ready to start the engine though, he pauses. Why the thought crossed his mind, he wasn't sure. Maybe it was just because there was nothing else to do or no one else to be with. It was silly though. At this hour? It wasn't late to him, but to some, it was plenty late to be out doing anything.

He shrugs. What did he have to lose? Settling back in the motorcycle seat, he retrieves his cell phone and finds Katie's number to text.

Bored. Wanna hang at the lake?

PT

Giving her own yawn Katie had to agree with Jason. After spending so much time outside chasing after Kaylee bed seemed pretty good even if it was still early. She new for one thing she would definitely sleep tonight.

   "She sure does."

As Jason pulls her closer Katie sinks down on the couch and leans her head onto his chest. She new they were both were ignoring what had happened earlier today and they should talk about it...but now Katie didn't want too. She was comfortable with Jason and just wanted to enjoy the night.

"I don't feel much like cooking myself so...how does pizza and a move sound tonight?"

Looking between her mom and Eric Ashlee just continued to smile. This really was the best gift ever, Ashlee was so happy and something told her that her mom was in on it but it was the best.

As Eric says that he will give her the first lesson today if her mom says its ok Ashlee's face lights up even more as she quickly looks to her mom her heart racing faster than she even thinks she it had before.

"Can I mom before dinner? PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!!!"

Seeing how happy and excited Ashlee was Stacy didn't even gave the heart to say no. The look in her eye was on full of joy there was life there and Stacy new she couldn't put that out nore would she ever want too.

"Yes that is ok with me as long as you try the boots first to make sure they fit."

Flipping through a clip bored and entering Jared's room a woman about medium height, and  avrage build enters the room. Her long honey brown color hair and blue eyes stood out as her soft smile could light up a room.

"Hey there...Jared. It seems like you have had a little excitement humm?"

The woman comes a little closer as she looks down at Jared. She had heard about what happened, and new most of the story of his injoreys. She had seen many people with many different things that had happened to them but this was a very odd case in deed.

"I'm Grace, I'll be helping you with you PT. Its very nice to meet you."

Grace holds her hand out to Jared. She was pleased to meet him, and she did want to help him like she did with all her patents. Him being able to wiggle his toe had been the start, getting to know him slowly was the next, than slowly helping him was the last.

Pick a title

"We could do subs," Jason agrees. "If we're gonna bring stuff back here anyway. I'm sure we can find something for Kaylee too." Standing up, he picks up Kaylee as he does, setting her on his hip. "Alright, kiddo. Time for a ride." He looks between Katie and Sandy. "We can take my truck so we can all ride together."

...The rest of lunch and partial afternoon goes well. At least for the most part. There was plenty more laughter over Kaylee's antics and by the time Cindy showed up to take her off their hands, they'd been around the pond at least ten times, fed more ducks and chased more dandelion seeds than one could imagine. Kaylee was visibly tired but too stubborn to slow down, even when Cindy picks her up...

...Jason groans and flops down on his couch. It would be suppertime soon and he had no clue what was on for the evening. At least they didn't have to go in to work or anything. Katie probably had some idea of how to spend their time - she usually did.

Tugging on her hand, he pulls her down onto the couch with him so she could lie on top of him and he kisses her head. "I think I might be too tired to do anything at all tonight," he admits. "That kid has more energy than a wild mustang." He was ignoring the earlier slight spat with Katie, and he knew it. But he didn't want to talk about it. He just wanted to have a normal evening and forget about the way he'd felt before.

Eric's eyes widen as Ashlee throws her arms around him, and a grin creases his lips. Laughing, he wraps his arms around her in a tight hug. "You're welcome, Kiddo. You deserve it."

Looking over at Stacy, his eyes lock with hers for just a moment. And for just a moment, he felt a part of something... something more than he had before...

Pulling away from Ashlee, he flicks her cheek with a finger. "If your mom says it's okay, you can have your first ride this afternoon. Moonbeam's been waiting for you."

He looks back over to Stacy again. "What do ya say, Mom? Think that'd be okay with you?"

Off to the side, Mick's eyes watch the scene and he smiles. Was anybody else noticing what was going on here, or was it just him? He wasn't sure. But what he was sure of, was that Eric was starting to have two pretty special girls in his life.

Glancing at his side to Rosetta, Mick tosses her a wink.

"It's definitely a boat."

"Hippo."

"Boat."

"Hippo."

"Boat."

"Hippo!" Mackenzie flicks sand in Justin's direction.

He grins and remains staring up at the clouds in the sky. He and Mackenzie were both lying on their backs on the riverbank, arguing over just about every cloud that passed. It was all in good fun though, as their laughter proved.

"Okay, okay," he relents. "I kinda see a hippo. But that one right over there..." he points. "That's a squirrel."

"What?!" Mackenzie scrunches her nose, squinting into the bright sky. "It's a dinosaur."

"With a bushy tail? Seriously?"

"No, that's his body!"

"Oh, right right." Justin laughs. "I see it now. I think."

Mackenzie smirks. "Sure you do."

"Mm-hmm." Justin keeps watching the clouds, falling silent for several minutes. "So you still haven't told me what your favorite thing to do is."

"You didn't ask."

"Didn't I? Oh, well, what's your favorite thing to do?"

Mackenzie thinks and finally shrugs. "I dunno."

"You gotta at least know something."

"Not really. But I guess...well, spending time with my dad, probably."

"Ken?"

"No. Carson's my dad. You know that."

"Right." Justin gives her a sidelong glance. "So what's so great about him?"

Mackenzie shrugs again. "He's nice. And... he's my dad."

"Dad's are usually nice."

"Not all of them."

"Really?"

Silence.

Justin turns his head to see Mackenzie staring intently at the sky. "What makes you say that?"

"Just 'cause."

Justin knew good and well that she was thinking of the couple who had adopted her and kept her for a short while. He knew the details of the abuse and he wasn't surprised in the least that she was clamming up now. "Kinda hurts when people we trust don't love us like we think they will, huh?"

"I guess."

...An hour later, Justin was driving back through town after having met Ken to drop off Mackenzie. He'd gotten her to talk just a little bit - but an inch to some was a mile for her, so he was satisfied with the day. She had an awful lot of baggage stored up that she'd never dealt with, and it was going to take some time.

Coming to an intersection, Justin pauses. Left would take him to his mother's. Right would take him to the hospital. He sighs. He'd just spent over an hour working with someone on their problems and he wasn't even facing his own. Finally, he turns right.

"And up and down and out to the side..."

Jared listens dully to the nurse as he performs his daily exercise for his right shoulder. It hurt a little less every day, but just lying here day in and day out made him stiff and sore.

"There we go. You're doing great."

Jared smirks at the older lady. He felt as if he were three years old. "Thanks." Not surprisingly, she didn't catch on to his sarcasm.

"And now your legs..." She pulls back the covers on his bed. "Can you feel this?"

It was the same old routine. "No... no.... and no." He didn't feel anything. He never did. It was hopeless. He was never going to walk again. He was-

"Oh, do that again!"

He looks up at the nurse with surprise. "Do what?"

"Your toe."

"What about it?"

"It moved."

It had? Jared stares down at his feet and his heart skips a beat. Concentrating with all he had, he suddenly sees his big toe shift slightly.

"That's wonderful!" The nurse claps her hands. "The doctor will be so pleased."

So was Jared. But as his smile spreads and enthusiasm builds, he suddenly realizes he's been left alone again. He felt like there should be some kind of celebration here. The doctor had said that any movement was the first sign that he might regain mobility in his legs. And that was something to be thrilled about. So... he looks around the room again. "Yay," he lamely says aloud.

"Knock knock."

Jared's head snaps quickly to the door and he's surprised to see Justin. "Oh hi..."

"Can I come in?"

"Does it look like it's crowded in here?"

Justin grins as little and wanders in to take a seat near the bed. "How's it going?"

"I moved a toe." Jared nods solemnly.

"Really? Well that's great, right? I mean that's what the doctor's been hoping for, right?"

Jared finally manages a bit of a smile. Maybe there was somebody who could share his enthusiasm. "Yeah. It could mean that I'll actually walk again after all."

"Good for you." Justin nods. "Ma will be thrilled to hear that."

"Yeah she was here earlier today but that was before all this."

"I'll be heading to her place after this, so I'll tell her."

"Okay." Jared fiddles with the edge of his blanket, feeling awkward in the pause that follows. "So did you-"

"I need to apologize," Justin interrupts.

"For...?"

"For the way I walked out last time." Justin really did feel guilty about it. He needn't have cut his brother off when he'd left. There were better ways to handle it. "I know you're trying to remember and I'm sure it's more frustrating than I can imagine. Some of the things in the past still hurt and I haven't figured out yet how to deal with them when I know you can't remember. So it's just gonna take me a while."

Jared bites his lip. He really did want to know more. He knew it must be something awful that he'd done, and maybe he really would be better off not knowing but... "I'm just trying to rebuild my life."

"How about building a new one?"

Jared sighs. "I just don't understand why you won't talk to me."

Justin tries not to flee again. "For now... how about this... I'll try to talk to you more if you try to not worry about the past."

It was better than nothing, right? "Yeah okay, I guess." Jared had a feeling that no matter how much Justin talked, he wouldn't reveal what was really eating away at him. "Tell Mom hi for me when you see her, okay?"

"Yeah..." Justin realized that he was suddenly being dismissed. He hadn't expected that. But he wouldn't push his luck either. Standing up, he gives a little wave. "Good luck with the toe."

"Right." Jared waves back and watches until Justin leaves. Leaning back into his pillow, he gives a little growl of frustration.

Best Gift

Hearing Jason's mumble Katie quickly looks at him a strange feeling over coming her. It was irritation mixed with a little bit of being upset. She didn't like being upset with Jason, but it was a feeling she couldn't help. Katie would of said more but she figured it was best to keep quiet.

Kaylee's squeal breaks Katie train of thought and for the moment she was glad. She didn't want to think about unpleasant things right now. She wanted to try and think about the good things, and just spending time with Jason and Kaylee.

Looking out across the park as Jason and Sandy go back and forth Katie gives a small sigh. Hunter's words pop into her head about just waking Jason over the back of the head.  Next time your boyfriend makes you feel like crap, just give him a slap upside the head or something. If only but Katie new that was not the answer and would only make things worse.

"Hmmm...Oh yeah eating in the park sounds great. I'm kind of in the mood for subs. If you guys don't want that than we can just stop at two places. It's nice outside though so I don't mind eating here."

Doing her best Katie smiles to Jason, Kaylee and Sandy. She wasn't going to run the rest of the day because of one moment, or being a sourpuss about it. She could think about it, and hash it up later. For now it was a nice day and she was with people she loved...that is what mattered.

Still holding her boots Ashlee looks up at Eric and gives a laugh. Maybe this was the start at becoming a real cowgirl. She certainly felt the part helping in the barn with the horses, being up early it just all seemed...right.

As Eric mentions his gift to her Ashlee sits up a little bit straighter as an even bigger smile spreads across her face and tears of joy start to pool in her eyes. She'd been waiting for Eric to say he would start teaching her. She'd been so pashent and now...now it payed off.

   "Really...you mean it?"

Ashlee couldn't help how over joyed she felt. Giving a little happy shriek she throws her arms around Eric's beck and burys her face into his neck.

"Thank you so much Eric!! This is the best gift ever!"

She really was going to be a cowgirl after all!

Nothing to unwrap

It was a new, odd sensation that Jason felt as Katie responds to him. He couldn't quite read her tone, but her words... stung? Just a little? Whatever it was, it wasn't the most pleasant of feelings. Trying to decide what it was, was difficult, and he wasn't sure he really wanted to, lest he make it worse. But for sure, it did sting.

As Katie moves on to say she's glad to meet Sandy, Jason wishes he could move on as quickly. But the slight sting was lingering. It wasn't too severe. And he was pretty sure Katie didn't mean it in a negative way. Regardless, it was hard for him to let go of it.

"Yeah, I'm... glad you got to meet her too. She's a lot of fun." He nods before his eyes lower to the grass as he plucks a new blade. "But I wouldn't go out to dinner with her alone," he mumbles.

Kaylee's squeal breaks the conversation and Jason looks over quickly to see her trying to catch dandelion seeds that Sandy had just blown into the breeze. The little girl giggles and runs around in circles. "Fler fly!"

Sandy laughs. "Yes the flowers are flying away."

Kaylee spins around, spies Jason and comes running over as fast as her little legs can carry her. Plowing into him, he's knocked off his elbow and onto his back, where she promptly lands on his stomach.

"Oof!" Jason's eyes widen as his breath is knocked out of him. He has to laugh though, catching Kaylee before she rolls off the other side. "Boy, you're gonna sleep well tonight. Mom's gonna want me to do this again but I don't know if I can handle it."

Kaylee gives him a cheesy grin and flops down so her head was on his chest. "Nap."

"Nap?! You kidding me?" Jason tickles her, making her giggle some more. "Later. We gotta find some lunch first."

Sandy was grinning as she wanders closer. "Yeah, I heard her tummy rumble a few times and so is mine."

"I'm thinking...." Jason takes Kaylee's hands as she straddles his stomach and bounces her a little. "Somewhere we can eat outside."

"We could just do McDonald's," Sandy suggests. "The one a few blocks from here has that outside patio. Or we could bring stuff back here."

"Hey yeah, it's close enough." He turns his head in the grass to look at Katie. "What do you think, Babe? Wanna eat here in the park or do you have a hankering for something else?"

The atmosphere was so warm and fun that everybody had a good time just mingling and watching Ashlee smile. She and Stacy really were becoming a part of the ranch family, and it was just an accepted fact now. Once a part of the family, always a part of it. It's just the way it worked.

Keeping his distance for a while, Eric just watches Ashlee, enjoying seeing her have a good time. He had a little cake and mingled a bit, but it wasn't until after he saw her open her gifts that he wanders closer.

Easing down in the chair next to her, he smiles before throwing Stacy a wink. She knew what he was doing, but he'd been successful at keeping it a secret from Ashlee. "Boy, those are nice looking boots," he comments, giving Ashlee a little nudge with his shouder. "I guess that makes you a real cowgirl now, huh?"

Leaning in a little closer, it's hard for him to control his smile. This was a bit out of his box. It had been a long time since he'd taught anyone how to ride, and that was usually Mick's deal around here. This was awkward for a few reasons, but he hoped it would be worth it.

"So, um... I don't have any gift for you to unwrap," he admits. "I ain't very good at that kind of thing. But..." He eyes the boots again. "If those there fit... how would you like for me to start giving you riding lessons?"
