Up 2 u

No sooner had Hunter pocketed his phone when it beeps. Grinning a little, he flips it back open again. Maybe Katie wasn't kidding when she said she'd answer at all hours. Sure enough, it was her replying. And... she said yes? Hunter was honestly a bit surprised. It had been a long shot but she seemed willing.

Hitting "reply," Hunter types out a return message.

Woot. Yeah meet me there or i can pick u up on my bike if i knew where u lived. I got a helmet if u got a jacket. Up 2 u.

He rolls his eyes but hits "send." She wouldn't say yes. But he had to throw that in anyway. Deciding to wait for her answer, he pulls his bike off to the side away from the pumps.

Eric waits patiently for Ashlee to get up in the saddle, smiling that it only took her two tries. He goes around the other side to make sure her feet were in the stirrups properly and gives her leg a pat. He knew she was excited and nervous, and that was okay - he'd expect nothing less from someone who had waited so long to ride. Moonbeam was as steady as a rock, so he wasn't worried about her reaction either.

Going around to Static, he mounts up too, gathering his own reins plus Moonbeam's. "Okay... here we go..." Heading forward, he keeps both horses at a slow walk, knowing that it would feel much faster than it really was, for Ashlee the first few rides.

Steering the horses around the paddock, he keeps his eye on Ashlee. "Try to relax," he encourages with a soft chuckle. He wasn't going to give her many instructions today - today he just wanted her to enjoy herself and not worry about being proper. Next time, he'd start telling her how to sit better in the saddle.

Listening to Grace, Jared wasn't too surprised at the little speech. He knew that just because he moved a toe, that didn't automatically mean that all was well. He still might not be able to walk. Although it was still a good sign. Grace's words seem to stimulate a stubbornness deep down, and he wonders if perhaps he'd had that kind of personality before.

The final question lingers in the air, until he nods. "I have nothing else to work towards," he answers. "And I don't want to live the rest of my life as as cripple if I don't have to. If there's any hope at all, I'm not going to give up. And even if there wasn't hope, I probably wouldn't give up either, so I guess you're stuck with me."

He gives her another wry grin. "Too bad you can't work on my brain like you do my legs. Then maybe I'd be able to tell you about myself." Though he was trying to be humorous about his memory loss, his eyes betrayed him by revealing he wasn't quite as chipper as he liked to appear. There was depression there whether he wanted to admit it or not. He holds his grin anyway though.

False Hope and Faith

Sitting at home Katie sat on the couch bored out of his mind. She new Jason was out with his friends tonight and though he hadn't said Sandy was there but she had a feeling she was. But to save a fight she didn't say anything about it at all.

About to doze off Katie gives a little jump at her phone going off. Strange someone would be texting her this late. Maybe it was Jason? Part of Katie thought it would be nice if it was but it was doubtful. Pulling her phone out Katie was disappointed that it wasnt Jason but it did make her smile that it was Hunter.

The lake...this time of night? Oh sure why not, Jas is out with his friends again so I might as well. Want me to meet you there?

Putting her boots on and finding they were the perfect fit Ashlee can't help but squeal a little more as she jumps up and heads for the door. She didn't want to wast anytime, there wasn't much time left before dinner and she wanted to get all she could in before than.

...Ashlee gives a nod to Eric as she puts her one foot into the stirrup. Trying to get up once it didn't work but Ashlee wouldn't give up, trying again she finally got it. Steadying herself Ashlee new she was nervous and wondered if Eric could see it but she was going to do this.

  "Ok, I'm ready."

Hearing Jared's humor Grace can't help but give a little laugh as her cheeks turn slightly red but she didn't mind, and after all Jared was rather good looking.

"Ah...so its not going to be my charm and your will that helps you do this but my looks?"

Pulling a chair up to the bed and sitting down Grace was ready to get down to business and let Jared know what this would involve. It was not and would not be an easy road but in the end it would be worth it.

"Well, we will start with stimulating your muscles, and nerves. Once we get those to the point where they are not still from not being used we will work on moving your legs, teaching you how to strand again. It will be long, it will be painful and I wont give you false hope if I don't think it will work. I'll be honest and upfront..but I need to know your going to give this your all and not give up. Can you do that for me?"

Grace cocks her head a little bit looking at Jared. She new God had a plan for everything, and his hand worked through everything so she had faith but still there was a difference between false hope and faith. She'd never let someone think they would be all better if they were not.

Turning to look at the door, Jared was used to seeing unfamiliar people in and out of here every day. This one seemed different though - she didn't look like one of the normal nurses. She was prettier than most of them, that was for sure.

"Excitement? Oh yeah... tons." Giving Grace a wry grin, he accepts her handshake, slowly with his sore arm. Though his mood wasn't the greatest, there wasn't any point in being rude. "Physical therapy, huh? If I'da known you were it, I mighta tried harder to wiggle my toe sooner."

Faint humor twinkled in his eyes. He usually got whacked for flirting with the nurses, but he didn't have anything better to do with his boredom. He was going out of his mind, lying here day in and day out. "So what happens now?"

Eric's smile just grows even bigger as Ashlee begs her mother to let her ride. It had been worth the wait. Worth the surprise.

"Yeah you better try them boots on - otherwise we might have to postpone the riding," he teases.

Watching Ashlee, his eyes drift back to Stacy. His expression thanked her... he was grateful for her allowing him to do this....

"Alright... you ready?" Eric grins down at Ashlee as they stood in the paddock. He held both Static and Moonbeam who were both saddled and waiting. "Left foot, left stirrup and swing yourself up." He pats Moonbeam's saddle. "Since this is your first time, I'll keep hold of the reins and Static and I'll steer 'til we get the hang of this."

He gives Ashlee a wink. "Up ya go."

"Pizza and movie sounds good," Jason agrees. "In... fifteen minutes." His eyes drift close and he wraps his arms around Katie, sighing deeply. "Just fifteen minutes."

It actually turned out to be half an hour after he'd dozed off, but they were able to enjoy some supper and a movie together before Katie went home. They never did talk about Sandy or Hunter again, although that whole thing still bothered Jason, even over the next couple days. He didn't bring it up though. By now it was too late anyway to stir up anything and Katie hadn't mentioned Hunter again, so surely there was nothing there anyway for him to be uptight about.

The weekend came and went, and it wasn't until Monday that Jason told Katie he'd be out with friends again that night. He mentioned Rusty and Will, but kept Sandy's name out of it. That day after work, Jason said he'd see Katie tomorrow.

Monday night. Hunter sits on the floor of his living room, paper, pictures and other paraphernalia scattered around him. The box that had been sitting by his shelf was tipped over and half-empty. He wasn't sure what had prompted him to go through it now. Other than the fact that his buddies were all going to the riverside tonight and he hadn't really wanted to. He'd been there a million times, and tonight he didn't have a date so it would be boring. Of course he hadn't told them that. He'd told Wade that he had a girl over at his place and wouldn't be available until morning. And, as predicted, the lie was accepted and he maintained his reputation. And of course, the result was him sitting here on his floor like a lame dufus, sorting through old stuff he hadn't even wanted to look at.

Setting aside another karate medal, part of him wanted to hang them up somewhere, and part of him just wanted to forget all of them. It wasn't so much that he disliked remembering the sport... but it reminded him too much of Break Out. He'd done a lot before that group, for sure... but that was the last time he'd done anything with karate and so that's what stuck in his mind whenever he thought about anything revolving around the sport.

Sighing, he scrounges around in the box and pulls out a picture frame. Inside was a photo of him and Kyle. A lump rises in his throat. He missed having a best friend. He missed having a guy he could trust with anything. He missed hanging out and laughing. Kyle had been like a brother.

Hunter thinks about Break Out and when they'd had to say goodbye. It hadn't been fair to anybody. Nobody knew what they were going to do or how they would survive. Futures had been turned upside-down without notice. Chaos. Inward panic and dismay. For everybody... except Kyle. An opportunity had been dropped in his lap before he'd even left the team. Not only did he have Alice, but he suddenly had a bright future again, just like that.

The old jealousy starts to boil again and Hunter turns the picture face-down onto the carpet. Kyle had just walked away scott free. That was it. See ya. Gone. And everybody else still had to figure out how to survive. How did he rate, getting the girl and the future? What was so great about him that he got special treatment?

A sigh surfaces. The image of Kyle's face the other night was burned into Hunter's mind. Surprise. Displeasure. Disappointment. Irritation. Hurt. But seeing all that in Kyle's eyes hadn't brought any satisfaction. On the contrary, it had just made Hunter even more mad. A few years ago, Hunter would have calmed down and apologized right away to work things out. And now...?

Rising from the floor, Hunter leaves the mess where it is. Slipping on his motorcycle boots and grabbing his leather jacket, he's out the door, downstairs and around the corner to the small shed where he kept his bike. Releasing the padlock it takes him only a few moments to take out his motorcycle, don his helmet and hit the road.

Leaning low over the bike his eyes focus on his lane through the face shield of his helmet. The lights flew by in a blur as he leans to the right and left, weaving through traffic. A red light whizzes by as he disregards stopping at an intersection. Shifting gears, his body lowers even more. The city streets were a dangerous racetrack - even more so at this time of night - but he didn't care.

After leaving Break Out, he'd wandered a while before falling into a group of street racers. He was a quick learner and a natural behind the wheel, gaining him a few fast wins. After that, he was hooked. He'd raced both car and motorcycle, picking up the sport very quickly, which gave him a jumpstart on much-needed income. He couldn't quit though. Not after experiencing the adrenaline rush. The crowds, the booze, the excitement... it helped drown out his past whenever he wanted. Winning his current car and motorcycle had been icing on the cake. And coming to Nevada... maybe he felt drawn to his roots. Or maybe he wanted to check out the desert racing. Or maybe somewhere deep down, he'd wanted to see if his past still existed.

Missing a turning car by inches, Hunter could feel his pantleg brush the bumper. Death - or worse - missed by a mere two inches. Flashing lights suddenly appeared in his mirror. Not a surprise, but he wasn't worried. Still swerving around traffic and dodging red lights, the cop gets further and further behind. Hitting the breaks and sliding on the pavement, Hunter skids into an alley and cuts his headlight. Looking back over his shoulder, he waits a few moments before seeing the cop drive by. Poor clueless soul. Steering back out onto the street, Hunter aims in the opposite direction, speeding up again.

Half an hour later, Hunter's speed had slowed. He'd outraced two more cops and had just about been plowed down by a delivery truck. He was numb though. None of that bothered him.

Pulling into a gas station at the edge of town, he finally cuts the engine and takes off his helmet. Dismounting, he unzips his jacket and starts pumping gas, heaving a deep sigh as he waits. Maybe the lake would be a good place to go tonight. He checks his watch. It was almost ten o'clock. Most likely there would be very few people at the beach at this hour. Some quiet would be nice. A bit of star gazing. It was a far cry from a party, but it seemed to fit his mood tonight. Although... being alone wasn't so fun either.

As the pump clicks off, he hangs it back up again before heading into the station to pay. While there, he grabs a liter of Mountain Dew and a couple milky way candy bars. Back at his motorcycle, he puts his purchase in the side compartment and mounts up again. Just ready to start the engine though, he pauses. Why the thought crossed his mind, he wasn't sure. Maybe it was just because there was nothing else to do or no one else to be with. It was silly though. At this hour? It wasn't late to him, but to some, it was plenty late to be out doing anything.

He shrugs. What did he have to lose? Settling back in the motorcycle seat, he retrieves his cell phone and finds Katie's number to text.

Bored. Wanna hang at the lake?

PT

Giving her own yawn Katie had to agree with Jason. After spending so much time outside chasing after Kaylee bed seemed pretty good even if it was still early. She new for one thing she would definitely sleep tonight.

   "She sure does."

As Jason pulls her closer Katie sinks down on the couch and leans her head onto his chest. She new they were both were ignoring what had happened earlier today and they should talk about it...but now Katie didn't want too. She was comfortable with Jason and just wanted to enjoy the night.

"I don't feel much like cooking myself so...how does pizza and a move sound tonight?"

Looking between her mom and Eric Ashlee just continued to smile. This really was the best gift ever, Ashlee was so happy and something told her that her mom was in on it but it was the best.

As Eric says that he will give her the first lesson today if her mom says its ok Ashlee's face lights up even more as she quickly looks to her mom her heart racing faster than she even thinks she it had before.

"Can I mom before dinner? PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!!!"

Seeing how happy and excited Ashlee was Stacy didn't even gave the heart to say no. The look in her eye was on full of joy there was life there and Stacy new she couldn't put that out nore would she ever want too.

"Yes that is ok with me as long as you try the boots first to make sure they fit."

Flipping through a clip bored and entering Jared's room a woman about medium height, and  avrage build enters the room. Her long honey brown color hair and blue eyes stood out as her soft smile could light up a room.

"Hey there...Jared. It seems like you have had a little excitement humm?"

The woman comes a little closer as she looks down at Jared. She had heard about what happened, and new most of the story of his injoreys. She had seen many people with many different things that had happened to them but this was a very odd case in deed.

"I'm Grace, I'll be helping you with you PT. Its very nice to meet you."

Grace holds her hand out to Jared. She was pleased to meet him, and she did want to help him like she did with all her patents. Him being able to wiggle his toe had been the start, getting to know him slowly was the next, than slowly helping him was the last.

Pick a title

"We could do subs," Jason agrees. "If we're gonna bring stuff back here anyway. I'm sure we can find something for Kaylee too." Standing up, he picks up Kaylee as he does, setting her on his hip. "Alright, kiddo. Time for a ride." He looks between Katie and Sandy. "We can take my truck so we can all ride together."

...The rest of lunch and partial afternoon goes well. At least for the most part. There was plenty more laughter over Kaylee's antics and by the time Cindy showed up to take her off their hands, they'd been around the pond at least ten times, fed more ducks and chased more dandelion seeds than one could imagine. Kaylee was visibly tired but too stubborn to slow down, even when Cindy picks her up...

...Jason groans and flops down on his couch. It would be suppertime soon and he had no clue what was on for the evening. At least they didn't have to go in to work or anything. Katie probably had some idea of how to spend their time - she usually did.

Tugging on her hand, he pulls her down onto the couch with him so she could lie on top of him and he kisses her head. "I think I might be too tired to do anything at all tonight," he admits. "That kid has more energy than a wild mustang." He was ignoring the earlier slight spat with Katie, and he knew it. But he didn't want to talk about it. He just wanted to have a normal evening and forget about the way he'd felt before.

Eric's eyes widen as Ashlee throws her arms around him, and a grin creases his lips. Laughing, he wraps his arms around her in a tight hug. "You're welcome, Kiddo. You deserve it."

Looking over at Stacy, his eyes lock with hers for just a moment. And for just a moment, he felt a part of something... something more than he had before...

Pulling away from Ashlee, he flicks her cheek with a finger. "If your mom says it's okay, you can have your first ride this afternoon. Moonbeam's been waiting for you."

He looks back over to Stacy again. "What do ya say, Mom? Think that'd be okay with you?"

Off to the side, Mick's eyes watch the scene and he smiles. Was anybody else noticing what was going on here, or was it just him? He wasn't sure. But what he was sure of, was that Eric was starting to have two pretty special girls in his life.

Glancing at his side to Rosetta, Mick tosses her a wink.

"It's definitely a boat."

"Hippo."

"Boat."

"Hippo."

"Boat."

"Hippo!" Mackenzie flicks sand in Justin's direction.

He grins and remains staring up at the clouds in the sky. He and Mackenzie were both lying on their backs on the riverbank, arguing over just about every cloud that passed. It was all in good fun though, as their laughter proved.

"Okay, okay," he relents. "I kinda see a hippo. But that one right over there..." he points. "That's a squirrel."

"What?!" Mackenzie scrunches her nose, squinting into the bright sky. "It's a dinosaur."

"With a bushy tail? Seriously?"

"No, that's his body!"

"Oh, right right." Justin laughs. "I see it now. I think."

Mackenzie smirks. "Sure you do."

"Mm-hmm." Justin keeps watching the clouds, falling silent for several minutes. "So you still haven't told me what your favorite thing to do is."

"You didn't ask."

"Didn't I? Oh, well, what's your favorite thing to do?"

Mackenzie thinks and finally shrugs. "I dunno."

"You gotta at least know something."

"Not really. But I guess...well, spending time with my dad, probably."

"Ken?"

"No. Carson's my dad. You know that."

"Right." Justin gives her a sidelong glance. "So what's so great about him?"

Mackenzie shrugs again. "He's nice. And... he's my dad."

"Dad's are usually nice."

"Not all of them."

"Really?"

Silence.

Justin turns his head to see Mackenzie staring intently at the sky. "What makes you say that?"

"Just 'cause."

Justin knew good and well that she was thinking of the couple who had adopted her and kept her for a short while. He knew the details of the abuse and he wasn't surprised in the least that she was clamming up now. "Kinda hurts when people we trust don't love us like we think they will, huh?"

"I guess."

...An hour later, Justin was driving back through town after having met Ken to drop off Mackenzie. He'd gotten her to talk just a little bit - but an inch to some was a mile for her, so he was satisfied with the day. She had an awful lot of baggage stored up that she'd never dealt with, and it was going to take some time.

Coming to an intersection, Justin pauses. Left would take him to his mother's. Right would take him to the hospital. He sighs. He'd just spent over an hour working with someone on their problems and he wasn't even facing his own. Finally, he turns right.

"And up and down and out to the side..."

Jared listens dully to the nurse as he performs his daily exercise for his right shoulder. It hurt a little less every day, but just lying here day in and day out made him stiff and sore.

"There we go. You're doing great."

Jared smirks at the older lady. He felt as if he were three years old. "Thanks." Not surprisingly, she didn't catch on to his sarcasm.

"And now your legs..." She pulls back the covers on his bed. "Can you feel this?"

It was the same old routine. "No... no.... and no." He didn't feel anything. He never did. It was hopeless. He was never going to walk again. He was-

"Oh, do that again!"

He looks up at the nurse with surprise. "Do what?"

"Your toe."

"What about it?"

"It moved."

It had? Jared stares down at his feet and his heart skips a beat. Concentrating with all he had, he suddenly sees his big toe shift slightly.

"That's wonderful!" The nurse claps her hands. "The doctor will be so pleased."

So was Jared. But as his smile spreads and enthusiasm builds, he suddenly realizes he's been left alone again. He felt like there should be some kind of celebration here. The doctor had said that any movement was the first sign that he might regain mobility in his legs. And that was something to be thrilled about. So... he looks around the room again. "Yay," he lamely says aloud.

"Knock knock."

Jared's head snaps quickly to the door and he's surprised to see Justin. "Oh hi..."

"Can I come in?"

"Does it look like it's crowded in here?"

Justin grins as little and wanders in to take a seat near the bed. "How's it going?"

"I moved a toe." Jared nods solemnly.

"Really? Well that's great, right? I mean that's what the doctor's been hoping for, right?"

Jared finally manages a bit of a smile. Maybe there was somebody who could share his enthusiasm. "Yeah. It could mean that I'll actually walk again after all."

"Good for you." Justin nods. "Ma will be thrilled to hear that."

"Yeah she was here earlier today but that was before all this."

"I'll be heading to her place after this, so I'll tell her."

"Okay." Jared fiddles with the edge of his blanket, feeling awkward in the pause that follows. "So did you-"

"I need to apologize," Justin interrupts.

"For...?"

"For the way I walked out last time." Justin really did feel guilty about it. He needn't have cut his brother off when he'd left. There were better ways to handle it. "I know you're trying to remember and I'm sure it's more frustrating than I can imagine. Some of the things in the past still hurt and I haven't figured out yet how to deal with them when I know you can't remember. So it's just gonna take me a while."

Jared bites his lip. He really did want to know more. He knew it must be something awful that he'd done, and maybe he really would be better off not knowing but... "I'm just trying to rebuild my life."

"How about building a new one?"

Jared sighs. "I just don't understand why you won't talk to me."

Justin tries not to flee again. "For now... how about this... I'll try to talk to you more if you try to not worry about the past."

It was better than nothing, right? "Yeah okay, I guess." Jared had a feeling that no matter how much Justin talked, he wouldn't reveal what was really eating away at him. "Tell Mom hi for me when you see her, okay?"

"Yeah..." Justin realized that he was suddenly being dismissed. He hadn't expected that. But he wouldn't push his luck either. Standing up, he gives a little wave. "Good luck with the toe."

"Right." Jared waves back and watches until Justin leaves. Leaning back into his pillow, he gives a little growl of frustration.

Best Gift

Hearing Jason's mumble Katie quickly looks at him a strange feeling over coming her. It was irritation mixed with a little bit of being upset. She didn't like being upset with Jason, but it was a feeling she couldn't help. Katie would of said more but she figured it was best to keep quiet.

Kaylee's squeal breaks Katie train of thought and for the moment she was glad. She didn't want to think about unpleasant things right now. She wanted to try and think about the good things, and just spending time with Jason and Kaylee.

Looking out across the park as Jason and Sandy go back and forth Katie gives a small sigh. Hunter's words pop into her head about just waking Jason over the back of the head.  Next time your boyfriend makes you feel like crap, just give him a slap upside the head or something. If only but Katie new that was not the answer and would only make things worse.

"Hmmm...Oh yeah eating in the park sounds great. I'm kind of in the mood for subs. If you guys don't want that than we can just stop at two places. It's nice outside though so I don't mind eating here."

Doing her best Katie smiles to Jason, Kaylee and Sandy. She wasn't going to run the rest of the day because of one moment, or being a sourpuss about it. She could think about it, and hash it up later. For now it was a nice day and she was with people she loved...that is what mattered.

Still holding her boots Ashlee looks up at Eric and gives a laugh. Maybe this was the start at becoming a real cowgirl. She certainly felt the part helping in the barn with the horses, being up early it just all seemed...right.

As Eric mentions his gift to her Ashlee sits up a little bit straighter as an even bigger smile spreads across her face and tears of joy start to pool in her eyes. She'd been waiting for Eric to say he would start teaching her. She'd been so pashent and now...now it payed off.

   "Really...you mean it?"

Ashlee couldn't help how over joyed she felt. Giving a little happy shriek she throws her arms around Eric's beck and burys her face into his neck.

"Thank you so much Eric!! This is the best gift ever!"

She really was going to be a cowgirl after all!

Nothing to unwrap

It was a new, odd sensation that Jason felt as Katie responds to him. He couldn't quite read her tone, but her words... stung? Just a little? Whatever it was, it wasn't the most pleasant of feelings. Trying to decide what it was, was difficult, and he wasn't sure he really wanted to, lest he make it worse. But for sure, it did sting.

As Katie moves on to say she's glad to meet Sandy, Jason wishes he could move on as quickly. But the slight sting was lingering. It wasn't too severe. And he was pretty sure Katie didn't mean it in a negative way. Regardless, it was hard for him to let go of it.

"Yeah, I'm... glad you got to meet her too. She's a lot of fun." He nods before his eyes lower to the grass as he plucks a new blade. "But I wouldn't go out to dinner with her alone," he mumbles.

Kaylee's squeal breaks the conversation and Jason looks over quickly to see her trying to catch dandelion seeds that Sandy had just blown into the breeze. The little girl giggles and runs around in circles. "Fler fly!"

Sandy laughs. "Yes the flowers are flying away."

Kaylee spins around, spies Jason and comes running over as fast as her little legs can carry her. Plowing into him, he's knocked off his elbow and onto his back, where she promptly lands on his stomach.

"Oof!" Jason's eyes widen as his breath is knocked out of him. He has to laugh though, catching Kaylee before she rolls off the other side. "Boy, you're gonna sleep well tonight. Mom's gonna want me to do this again but I don't know if I can handle it."

Kaylee gives him a cheesy grin and flops down so her head was on his chest. "Nap."

"Nap?! You kidding me?" Jason tickles her, making her giggle some more. "Later. We gotta find some lunch first."

Sandy was grinning as she wanders closer. "Yeah, I heard her tummy rumble a few times and so is mine."

"I'm thinking...." Jason takes Kaylee's hands as she straddles his stomach and bounces her a little. "Somewhere we can eat outside."

"We could just do McDonald's," Sandy suggests. "The one a few blocks from here has that outside patio. Or we could bring stuff back here."

"Hey yeah, it's close enough." He turns his head in the grass to look at Katie. "What do you think, Babe? Wanna eat here in the park or do you have a hankering for something else?"

The atmosphere was so warm and fun that everybody had a good time just mingling and watching Ashlee smile. She and Stacy really were becoming a part of the ranch family, and it was just an accepted fact now. Once a part of the family, always a part of it. It's just the way it worked.

Keeping his distance for a while, Eric just watches Ashlee, enjoying seeing her have a good time. He had a little cake and mingled a bit, but it wasn't until after he saw her open her gifts that he wanders closer.

Easing down in the chair next to her, he smiles before throwing Stacy a wink. She knew what he was doing, but he'd been successful at keeping it a secret from Ashlee. "Boy, those are nice looking boots," he comments, giving Ashlee a little nudge with his shouder. "I guess that makes you a real cowgirl now, huh?"

Leaning in a little closer, it's hard for him to control his smile. This was a bit out of his box. It had been a long time since he'd taught anyone how to ride, and that was usually Mick's deal around here. This was awkward for a few reasons, but he hoped it would be worth it.

"So, um... I don't have any gift for you to unwrap," he admits. "I ain't very good at that kind of thing. But..." He eyes the boots again. "If those there fit... how would you like for me to start giving you riding lessons?"

Boots

Turning to Jason and searching his face Katie could see the there was something there. He was upset? Jealous? Confused...and for a moment Katie wondered why to herself. She didn't understand it, and it was slightly confusing.

"Well I figured it would be ok since you potentially would of been spending time with Sandy today. Doubt I will be the one calling him again, That might be just a little much."

Turning to watch Sandy and Kaylee again Katie couldn't help but feel this strange feeling. It was almost like Jason didn't trust her, but why wouldn't he? She'd never give him reason not too...so it made no sense. Maybe it was just one of those new things with there new feelings.

"Anyways I am happy I got to meet Sandy. She seems nice!"

Feeling her stomach grown Ashlee decided it was time for lunch. She had worked up and apatite this morning and was now starving. Looking around for Eric and not finding him Ashlee figured he was already waiting for lunch so she might as well head there too.

Getting up to the dinning hall and entering Ashlee stops in the door way and just smiles. She wasn't exasperating this much to be going on. She figured maybe a cake, and lunch but not the decorations and all the added on stuff. It made her feel good though and she liked it.

...It wasn't long after getting there laughter rolled through the dinning hall and lunch had been eaten, Cake was served and Ashlee was stuffed. Now starting to open her gifts Ashlee couldn't stop smiling. Everything was so wonderful and this had been such a suprise it was nice.

Coming over with the bag Stacy sits down next to Ashlee. Putting her arm around her daughter she hands her the bag and gives her a kiss on the head.

   "Happy Birthday Hunny."

Gently taking the tap off the bag and pulling the paper out before reaching in and taking a hold of the boots.  Pulling them out and setting them in her lap Ashlee's fingers go over the stitching on them. They were so nice Ashlee could only dream of having something like this.

Looking to her mom she smiles before giving her a hug. They were so nice and her mom had thought about her.

"Thank you so much mom. I love them."

"Your welcome Ash. I figured they might come in handy sooner or later."

That'll teach me

Jason lifts an eyebrow, hearing that Katie had gone out with someone... someone she'd arrested just recently... a guy, no less. He props himself up a little straighter on his elbow, turning his eyes from his sister to Katie. She was... smiling. He hadn't realized until now how rarely he saw that anymore.

"So you... went out to dinner with Hunter... Hunter Maxwell... the drunken disorderly?" He couldn't help it that he was surprised. He knew nothing was wrong with it, it just felt... strange. That just didn't seem like something Katie would do, and... maybe if Jason was completely honest, he might admit that he was a little bit miffed that she'd gone out with a guy alone like that.  If it had been a friend, like one of the guys in the band or something, it would have felt different to him.

"I guess I'm... kinda surprised you were out alone with another guy..." He lets a fairly tense pause linger for a moment. "Glad you had a good time though. Guess that'll teach me to hit the hay early, huh?" He smiles... kind of.

"Okay." Dylan nods. "I'll, um... I'll be ready." Heading back to his work, he glances over his shoulder once, watching Ashlee walk away. She really was sweet. He wasn't so sure he was going to like tonight, but he'd do it for her.

By the time lunch rolled around, the dining hall had filled with most of the ranch men and women - maybe just a couple more than usual, making an effort to be there to celebrate. A small table off to the side held a few packages and some cards, and balloons and crepe paper had been strung up in various places around the room. Build-your-own sub sandwiches were on the menu today, and Becky had prepared several platters of various meats and cheeses.

Off to the side, Eric sits in his usual spot, looking forward to Ashlee having a good time. Whenever she opened her gifts - right after, he'd give her his. He couldn't wrap it... but he was pretty sure it would make her happy. He'd wait until after she'd opened her boots though.

4/19/12

Five

Winding down and just sitting in the grass with Jason Katie enjoyed the moment to just relax and wind down now. Kaylee had her running all over the place not that she minded. It wasn't long ago BJ had that energy too, she could almost remember it like yesterday and now...now he was grown too.

Looking over to Jason and giving a nod Katie figured he was tired last night she couldn't get mad at him for that, that was for sure.

"I went out to a surprise dinner. I happened to bump into Hunter while I was shopping and we both made a mess of the chip isle. We both figured we should leave before we got kicked out. So...we went to dinner and just talked as friends."

Katie watches Sandy and Kaylee again as she continues to talk. A small smile spread across her lips.

"We talk about you, we talked about me, we talked about him. He was a lot different than from the night I arrested him. I think he just...lost in life. I kind of felt bad."

"Thank you Dylan, it means a lot you remembered."

Ashlee couldn't help the smile that grew bigger as she clapped with excitement. She was happy Dylan said he would come along. All the people she wanted there would be and it wouldn't be over crowded or awkward at the table because there was an even number.

"I think we are going to be heading into town about five. I'm not sure if we are taking one or two cars yet but we can meet at the dinning hall if you want. We should have it all planned out by than."

Okay

Dylan looks to the side quickly as he's joined by Ashlee, pausing only a moment in his walk to the stall he was supposed to clean next. "Hey..."

Getting to the stall, he stops and lifts his eyebrows a little. She wanted him to go with them to dinner? Seriously? And her mom said it was okay?

Leaning on the pitchfork, he studies Ashlee's face for a moment. She seemed really happy today. He didn't feel much like going out anywhere tonight. It was supposed to be a fun time, and he wasn't too good with the whole having fun thing. Let alone while being watched like a hawk by Stacy and Eric both. But... Ashlee looked so hopeful. She really was a good little friend - at least she hadn't ditched him after all the stupid things he'd done. And... he did like her company. Couldn't he suck it up for one evening, for her?

"You didn't give me time to even wish you a happy birthday first." He wouldn't tell her he'd forgotten. A faint smile almost surfaces. "Yeah, okay, I'll come along. What time do I need to be ready?"

Kaylee's fingers curl around the bag of bread and she smiles big. "Duck food," she states flatly.

Sandy laughs. "I think she'd got it figured out alright."

"Yeah, she's a smart one," Jason agrees. "Just like her brother." A whack to the arm is the response and he grins at Sandy before slinging his arm around Katie's shoulders. "Okay. To the pond."

Soon they were by the little pond, Kaylee's enthusiasm bubbling over - a little too much for the ducks, but she managed to throw a few wads of bread to them and watch them eat - which in turn made her babble and giggle all the more. She would have fallen right into the water once, had Jason not caught her with his leg. All she did was laugh though, having no clue she'd almost taken a bath.

Sitting on the grass a short while later, Kaylee is finally settled down enough to pick dandelions and cease running around in circles, giving the adults a short break.

Jason plucks a blade of grass to fiddle with, lounging back on one arm, while Sandy helped Kaylee pick "flers."

"I was gonna call you last night," Jason admits to Katie, keeping his eyes on Kaylee and Sandy. "I was just exhausted. How'd you spend your evening?"

Special Place

Stacy can't help but laugh a little bit at Luke's comment. Sitting down Stacy starts to blow up some of the balloons too. It was so nice of everyone to pitch in and help her do something special for Ashlee. Her daughters personality was contiguous and everyone seemed to snag on fast. It made Stacy happy and feel good that had a special place here.

Ashlee gives a little clap as Eric says he would go with them tonight. It made her happy to know he was coming. So far this was one of the best birthdays yet and it had only started. She couldn't wait for more.

Looking out the window and see Dylan walk by Ashlee looks back to Eric and gives another big smile. While she could she better ask Dylan now. She had no idea if he would say yes or not but she hopped he would too.

"Ok, I'll see you around lunch time. Thanks so much Eric."

Setting the rest of her items down and heading twords the door slips out of the room and catches up with Dylan.

   "Hey Dyl!"

Ashlee gives a smile as she walks along side him. She was happy to see him a little more stable, and up and moving around more. Though she could see the look in his eye was still a saddened one at least he wasnt sick anymore and that was a start.

"I was wondering if you wanted to come to dinner tonight with Eric, my mom and Me. She said it was ok for me to invite you and I thought it was be nice to spend time with my friend on my birthday."

Giving a small smile at Sandy as she stood Katie was a little surprised to hear Jason had talked so much about her. In a way it was kind of strange to not just know he was. But at the same time it was nice to know he was talking about her. That was a good thing.

Looking back to Kaylee as she laughing Katie's eyes twinkled. Following the little girl's finger as she pointed and hearing her ask about the ducks Katie just shakes her head a smile still spread across her lips.

"The ducks it is. I just happened to bring along some bread too..."

Katie reaches into her bag and pulls out a baggie with a few slices of bread and hands them to Kaylee.

"Don't eat them though they don't tast very good. But...I think the Ducks will like them if you break it off and throw some to them."

Giving her another kiss and turning back to Jason and Sandy Katie gives another soft smile. She loved spending time with Kaylee along with Jason. Maybe last night had been the start to opening her eyes and feeling, had Hunter really maybe ignited those feelings. If he had she owed him much more than a thanks. Friendship was funny like that...taking place in the strangest of ways.

"You guys coming too? I think this little peanut has made up our minds for us!"

Duck!

Setting aside the book he'd been reading, Luke looks up at Stacy and smiles. He'd be glad to be put to work, even if it was just blowing up balloons - that he could do.

"I'd love to help out," he agrees. Situating himself in his chair, he reaches for some balloons, starting with a red one. "Angel always tells me I'm full of hot air," he muses. "Guess I can finally put it to good use."

Eric was... special... to Ashlee? His facial expression softens even more. His heart floods with something new... something warm... something... very special. He'd never thought he'd have a little friend like her, let alone planned to be so fond of her. He'd settled for the fact that it was too late for him to ever have a family. But if he'd had a daughter... he wondered if this is what it would have been like.

A new smile spreads across his face. "You're pretty special to me too. I'll come tonight."

He wasn't surprised she was going to ask Dylan too. He'd seen the way she watched the young man, and he had a pretty good idea that there was a crush there. He'd never lead on to her though, not wanting to embarrass her. It was rather cute in his eyes.

"And I think asking Dylan is a really good idea." Eric knew that Dylan could probably use a little bit of time away from the ranch - whether or not he'd say yes was another story. He hoped he would agree though, if for nothing else than to make this night special for Ashlee.

"Speaking of which..." He leans over a little, looking out the tackroom door as Dylan passes with a pitchfork. "You might be able to catch him in between stalls right now."

Kaylee squeals with delight as Katie picks her up, clinging to her tightly and returning a sloppy sort of kiss to the cheek.

Jason grins, glad that Kaylee was so loveable. He knew she'd been miserable there for a while with Daddy gone, but she seemed to be doing well now. "Hey, Hero."

Slipping his arm around her, he returns her kiss. "You're not that late. I was early." Looking down into her eyes, something seems a little off. He can't put his finger on it though. Did coming her to meet Sandy bother her? He wondered.

Sandy stands up and smiles, nodding. "That's me. I've heard an awful lot about you too. This guy is pretty fond of you."

Jason's cheeks get a little red and he throws Sandy a smirk. "How about we take a walk?"

Sandy laughs. "Embarrassing you is way to easy."

Kaylee's eyes bounce from one person to the other, then finally drift to the nearby pond. "Duck!" She points enthusiastically with one hand while her other hand held onto Katie tightly. "Duck!"

Jason shakes his head. "Or we could go see the ducks."

Kaylee giggles and fingers Katie's hair. "Go duck?"

So much

Pulling into the park parking lot Katie scans the area thought it wasn't hard to spot Jason, Kaylee and who she would guess was Sandy. Getting out of the car Katie lets out a small sigh before smiling. Even if she felt nervous for some reason she'd put a smile on and be as cheery as she could be.

Giving a wave when she gets closer Katie bends down and holds her arms out to Kaylee leting her run to her and scooping her up planting a big old kiss on her cheek.

"Hey there Kiddo. You have gotten big since the last time I saw you my goodness. I think you might end up being taller than Jason."

Still holding Kaylee Katie looks over at Jason and smile before leaning in and giving him a kiss and a half hug as she was holding Kaylee. It almost felt like forever since she had felt affection from Jason. She new it wasn't true but with out the intentsate thats how it kind of felt.

   "Sorry I'm a little late."

Looking over at Sandy Katie gives a small wave. She was a pretty young woman who looked about Jason's age witch made sense since they went to school together but Katie was just trying to take her all in. She didn't want to feel intrust worthy of this woman, or of Jason. She wanted to feel ok with him hanging out with her, and spending time with his friends but it seemed so hard when she saw them laughing more than she she made Jason laugh anymore.

"Hi, you must the Sandy I have been hearing so much about."

Turning to see Eric a little more Ashlee gives a smile and nods her head. If Eric came she thought it would be fun, her mom would enjoy it and she would just at much. Her birthday dinner was meant to be fun and shared with people she cared about. So...thats why Eric and Dylan had to come along.

"Yes I am sure. I want you to come and join in. This is a special day for me and should be shared with people who are special to me...and you are Eric."

Setting down the bottle of oil and the rag Ashlee looks around the tak room for a moment. She new maybe this was uncomfortable for Eric her asking this but it was important to her. She'd never....had a male figure to share in these special days with her.

"I am going to see if Dylan wants to come too."

"Alright I can do that. As for the cake I can try to help but I am not sure what to have written on the top. Maybe...Happy Birthday we love you. I'll have to think on it."

Giving a smile and turning Stacy heads off into the main room and over to the closet grabbing the balloons and returning sitting down where Luke was. She new sometimes he had a hard time doing things so she would help as much as he could.

"Heya Luke! Want to help me with the balloons?"

Are you sure?

Eric chuckles softly, not surprised that Ashlee would find the thought of racing fun. Checking over the saddle, he nods with satisfaction. "Good job. You're getting to be a pretty good tack cleaner there, missy." He flicks her leg teasingly with his rag.

Going to finish up what he was doing, then give Ashlee something else to do, he stops when he hears her invitation. She wanted... him... to go to her birthday dinner? Wasn't going into town something really special to her? He'd figured she'd just go with her mom and have some girl time. But... she'd invited him? Because... it would make Stacy happy?

He tries to control the heat in his face, but he isn't sure if it works or not. Was she really right? Would Stacy really want him there, or would he just be intruding? Was that little something he felt down deep, a hope that Ashlee really was correct? Even so, was it that Ashlee herself really wanted him along, or was it that she just thought Stacy would want him there? He couldn't tell.

Clearing his throat, he shifts a little on the bench and tips back his hat on his head. Giving Ashlee a smile, he nods. How could he say no to her anyway? He wondered if she asked for the moon, if he'd say yes. "I'd like joining you for your birthday dinner very much." He cocks his head. "You sure you want me along though? I know you ain't had your mom to yourself very much lately and I wouldn't feel left out."

"Hi, Stacy." Becky smiles as she wipes her hands on her apron. "Actually, yeah, if you want to go get the balloons from the hall closet, we could get started on some of those." Most of the guests had already started filtering out of the dining hall, so it was good timing.

"I think I saw Luke out there at one of the tables - he could probably help." In reality, she knew he was having a tough time doing much this morning - it had been an accomplishment for him to be at breakfast today. Becky also knew if he could be given a task he could do while sitting down, it would help him feel useful.

"The cake is just about done, then you could help me frost it if you like. I wasn't sure what you wanted to put on it."

"...So how's the whole recovery thing going?"

"Not too bad. Slow. I guess."

Sandy smiles and bounces Kaylee on her knee as she sits with Jason at the picnic table, waiting for Katie to meet them at the park. "Sounds like that's normal though, right?"

Jason grins a little. "What part of any of this is normal?"

Sandy thinks for a moment then laughs. "Okay, so the whole emotions, telepathy, super-power thing isn't exactly something I hear about every day. But your doctor said it would be slow, right?"

"Yeah." Jason hadn't thought he would tell Sandy about him and Katie... but it had just sorta happened while they'd been sitting here this morning. Sandy noticed he hadn't been quite with it, so he'd started to give them a brief explanation, which had wound up being a full story about his and Katie's connection. Sandy seemed to accept it in stride. Which was strange, really. Most people would think he was nuts. Then again, Sandy seemed quite open to most anything being possible since God is ultimately in control, and she'd heard of strange connections before - nothing like Jason and Katie but enough that Sandy didn't think he was crazy or lying. And... it did make Jason... feel good.

Kaylee squeals and giggles, being bounced around on Sandy's knee, bringing Jason's concentration back around again for a new grin. "You silly goose. You'll laugh at anything."

Kaylee giggles again, scrunching up her nose at her big brother. "Jaysh!"

"Uh-huh. You're a ham."

"Ham ham!"

Jason rolls his eyes. "You get it all from your father, 'cause I was never like this."

"I bet you were," Sandy teases.

"Okay maybe Mom has a few stories. But I've sworn her to secrecy."

Sandy laughs. "I suppose you've outgrown most of your quirks if she trusts you with this bundle of joy for the day."

Jason grins again. It was the first time he'd been left in charge of Kaylee, and he was having more fun than he'd thought.

Kaylee settles down a little bit, her eyes roaming the park. Her hair had started to come loose from her pigtails and the wind was making it stand almost straight up in places. Looking to the parking lot and seeing a new car pull up, she points. "Kate? Kate?"

Jason follows her finger and nods. "It sure does look like Katie." They'd been talking about Katie since they'd arrived, so it wasn't unusual for Kaylee to put two and two together that they were waiting for her. "Do you even remember her?"

Kaylee slides down off Sandy's lap and drapes her arms over Jason's knee. "Ya, ya."

"I bet." Jason runs his hand over her hair. "I'm glad she's here before you wear out us two."

Happy

Giving a nod and holding up the card she has signed Mick and her own name to Rosetta smiles. She had wanted to do more for Ashlee but they just didn't have the funds for it right now. So throwing her a little part and the card was what she had to offer and hoped she would like it just the same.

"Yes around lunch time after the guests clear out we are gonna have a little mini part for her. I'll see you there Sweety!"

Still working on a different section of the saddle Ashlee listens to Eric talk about racing again. She pictured everything he said in her own mind and it seemed like fun. Just to go fast, to be close to the horse, to be...free.

"I think racing sounds like fun. To be that close to the horse, the smells, the sights...it just sounds like fun."

Looking up at Eric and searching his eyes Ashlee it was easy to see sometimes how he missed something. Like racing, he had really enjoyed it and now...now he couldn't. Ashlee could only imagine how hard that much be for anyone.

Letting the subject go for now Ashlee smiles and holds up the saddle to show Eric. She'd gotten pretty good at this with Eric's help, though it wasn't perfect it only made her try that much harder.

"I looks almost as good as new. It's amazing what a little oil can do."

Putting the saddle down Ashlee turns to Eric again bringing her leg up onto one of the hay bals. She new her mom has asked Eric to come to dinner tonight but she didn't know if he would say yes or not. She really would like him to join though.

"Are you going to come to my birthday dinner tonight? I'd like it if you did...it would...it would make mom happy and I like seeing her smile."

Heading to the dinning hall with the package Stacy enters before setting it down on one of the far tables. Going to the kitchen and seeing Becky Stacy smiles. It was amazing how close knit the ranch was and how everyone was like family. It didn't talk long to warm up to them and it was something Stacy liked. In a way it was almost like a small community.

"Hey Becky, anything I can help with?"

Boxed Memories

Arriving at his apartment, things were quiet. It was a somewhat sleepy part of town, which didn't bother Hunter much. He had one flight of stairs inside, and had the bigger of the apartments in the corner of the building. It suited him alright. Not too expensive but not too shabby either, and within his budget as long as he kept winning races and gaining income for bets. He knew one of these days he'd have to find a real job, but so far he'd been able to survive without it. Better sense told him he better start looking soon though. One lost bet would be all it would take to be short one month's rent.

Unlocking the door, he steps into the living room. It was a nice big open area with walls painted white except for the outside wall that was brick and housed a nice large window looking down over the street. He didn't have much furniture. He had a couch and an entertainment center to hold his television and DVDs. A shelf in the corner held a few pictures in frames and some odds and ends for knick-knacks. An open box on the floor next to it held even more pictures along with trophies and medals from karate tournaments. He had yet to unpack those even though he'd been living here for a little while now. He just hadn't had time. Or... maybe he just hadn't had the gumption yet to sort through everything in the box, knowing there were pictures from his past... some from Break Out.

For the most part, his apartment was pretty well-kept. Off to the side was a small kitchen with just enough room for the necessities and a small table, then towards the back of the living room was a short hallway to the bedroom and bathroom. He had a few things on the walls, but not much. An abstract painting he'd picked up last year. A calendar with photos of cars.

Sighing, Hunter tosses his keys onto the end table by the couch and throws his jacket over the back of the couch for now. Or indefinitely. Depending on whether or not he'd pick it up later. Slipping off his sneakers, he goes to grab a beer from the fridge then flops down on the couch, flipping on the television. Finding nothing good to watch, he leaves it on anyway. He needed the distraction.

He'd had a good time with Katie tonight, no doubt. It had been different. Fun. It was the good clean fun that he didn't have anymore. He'd wanted something else. He'd wanted to walk the fine line and get as close to trouble as he could. There was thrill there. Adrenaline. And yet... the good old days remained in the back of his mind as the best. He didn't like to think about it much. So that's why he settled for a dumb movie on television.

Later that night, he'd find himself inputting Katie's number into his phone. He wasn't sure if he'd ever call her or she him. He might not even see her again at all. But he'd keep her number just in case.

"Yeah..." Mick was grateful for Roesetta's efforts. It... didn't make him feel much better though. Pulling her in for a hug, he kisses the top of her head. "Thanks. I suppose I better get back out to my fence. It isn't gonna fix itself."

Managing a smile, he backs away and retrieves his gloves from his back pocket. "I'll probably see you at lunch now. Still having a party for Ashlee, right?"

Eric thinks for a moment, then shrugs. "Lots of things I liked about racing. Horses in general... going fast... pay wasn't too bad."

He gives Ashlee a sidelong glance and a smile. "There's something cool about flying across the ground with a horse between your legs. Never got into the major races or anything - I was too heavy. Mick and I both were too tall. We had fun though. 'Til I had my accident." He taps his head. "By the time I could ride again, I'd been out of it too long and there was no going back."

Picking up another piece of leather, he continues to work. There was a part of him that missed those days. He'd been free. Respected. At the top of his game. Now he felt like a washed up truck driver. It was nice getting back into a routine with the horses at least. But would it last? Would he stay? He didn't know.

"How's that saddle coming there?"

Time, Pashents, and Care

Once outside Katie gives a nod and a smile to Hunter. It had been a nice time and she'd enjoyed it. Now the night was ending and she wondered would this be the end of there friendship or would there paths cross again? Would one or the other really call or was it just something people said? Katie didn't know but there was always the possibility.

"See ya around. Try not to get into anymore trouble. Arresting you would be awkward now."

Giving a grin and getting into her car Katie waved. The drive home would be a slower one because she was slightly tired, but it felt good non the less to have hung out with someone tonight and not be stuck doing something alone. It defiantly felt good, and knowing it felt good...having felt that emotion even more a moment...felt even better!

Glancing up at Mick from her paperwork Rosetta had been listing to everything he had said and her heart went out to him. She new and it was easy to see how despret he wanted to know him son, to connect to him and be close to him. It just wasn't working out that way. Rosetta herself had hoped once Dylan was well and out and about again they would have a little more contact but it just didn't work out that way.

"You're still not doing anything wrong, Dylan just... I don't know. I don't have an explanation for why he wont get to close to anyone. Even Sparky he talks to but isn't close."

Laying her pen down and standing up Rosetta walks over to Mick and lays a hand on his arm looking up into her husbands eyes. She new she'd said it before and now it didn't make it any better but maybe Dylan just needed more time.

"Just don't get to frustrated with him. Keep trying and it will show Dylan you really do care and want to be there for him. Maybe right now he just...not sure."

Sitting down next to Eric and starting on the saddle Ashlee rubs the oil into it gently working very diligently, and with great care. The smell, the way the saddle leather looked at you rubbing the oil into it, it was a little bit of everything that she liked.

"Mmmm...I think if I was asked I like the smell the most. I don't know why it's just...nice I guess."

Continuing on the saddle Ashlee listens to Eric talk about racing. It sounded fun, dangerous, but fun at the same time. Feeling free, and just hitting the track. Ashlee couldn't help but wonder what the feel of the wind through her hair would feel like, and running top speed twords a destination.

"What was the best thing for you about racing?"

Forgotten

Eric smiles and nods in agreement. "The tackroom is probably my favorite place in the barn. There's just something about the smell of leather."

Nodding down the barn aisle, he leads the way, trying not to favor his leg too much, lest Ashlee worry about him. Getting to the tackroom, Eric flips on the light and sets his hands on his hips, looking around for a moment, seemingly deep in thought. "Ah. There we go. I knew there was a saddle that needed some attention."

Setting up a saddle rack in front of the bench, he retrieves one of the smaller western saddles. "I think this thing could use a little TLC."

Ten minutes later, he was sitting next to Ashlee, working on a few bridles, keeping one eye on her as she worked too. "When I was horse racing, on my days off the most relaxing thing I could do was oil saddles," he muses. "Some of the others thought I was crazy - they wanted to get away from the barn and work whenever they could. But to me... this was n ever work."

"Well, you look like you've been working hard." Becky smiles as Dylan wanders into the kitchen.

He was hot and sweaty from already having cleaned several stalls this morning. Nodding a little, he takes off his gloves, aiming for the sink. "I just need something to drink."

"How about some lemonade?"

Pausing, Dylan quirks an eyebrow. "That sounds really good."

"Good. Because I just made some." Becky retrieves a glass for him before heading to the fridge.

Leaning on the counter, Dylan looks around the kitchen. "Something smells good."

Becky chuckles. "Just working on the birthday girl's cake. Trying to get it done while Eric keeps her occupied in the barn."

Birthday girl... birthday... Ashlee. Dylan inwardly groans. He'd forgotten all about Ashlee's birthday. He'd thought he'd missed it while he'd been gone, but apparently it was later than he'd remembered. And... he had nothing for her. Sighing, he accepts the lemonade that's handed to him. "Thanks, Becky."

She smiles and gives his shoulder a pat. "You're welcome. Don't work too hard out there today, huh?"

He shakes his head, taking a long swallow of the sour drink. "Trying to cram it all in this morning so I can hit the books this afternoon."

"On a Saturday."

"Yeah..." He sighs. "I'm so far behind."

She gives him a softer look. "You'll catch up, don't worry."

"I hope so." Quickly finishing the rest of his drink, he nods his thanks again before leaving the kitchen by way of the back door. Returning to the barn, he sets to work once more.

Leaning on the window frame in the office, Mick stares outside, watching Dylan heading back to the barn. Sighing, he shakes his head. Eventually, he turns around and eases into a chair. "I wish I knew what was going through that boy's head."

Taking a short break, he'd ended up in the office while Rosetta worked at the desk. "Since he was able to go back to his own bunk, he's said about ten words to me. I thought maybe he'd talk to me after all that, but apparently not."

He looks down and picks at a new tear in his jeans he'd received this morning while working on a fence. "I just wish I knew he was okay. I know he's depressed... and when he was feverish there, he was telling me he almost killed himself while he was gone... I just... I worry about him." He shakes his head. "I still don't know where he went or what really happened. He just... doesn't say anything at all. Sparky knows him even better than I do."

Mick glances up to Rosetta, his eyes showing how much he just wanted to be close to his son. "What am I doing wrong?"

Taking Katie's number, Hunter grins. "Thanks."

Too soon, the check was paid and it was time to leave. Outside on the sidewalk, Hunter takes a long breath of the night air. It was far from country fresh air, but it wasn't too bad at this end of town.

"Well, Miss Katie..." Hunter gives her a casual one-fingered salute. "I'll see ya around."

Perfect

Ashlee can't help but laugh at the thought of counting flowers out in the yard. A little bit of her wanted to say she wanted to do that just to see if Eric really would, but she wouldn't torcher him that much. Not after everything he'd done and continued to do for her.

"Mmmmm...How about clean some tack? I always like the smell of the tack room. I don't know why its just...nice."

Opening the door to the bunk and seeing Ashlee was gone Stacy was thankful. She wanted to wrap her daughters gift and sign the card she had gotten her but she needed Ashlee not to be around and now was the perfect time.

Pulling the boots out from the closet Stacy also grabs the back and tissue paper. Neatly setting some inside the bag and than wrapping some around the boots she places them inside as well. Fiddling with the bright yellow paper inside the purple bag she wanted it almost perfect. Taking a ribbon and the card she ties the bag shut.

There was going to be a little birthday surprise in the mess hall once all of the guest cleared out. Cake, some balloons and that's when Stacy would also give Ashlee her gift. Than tonight would be a trip into time for dinner. Stacy was going to see if Eric could come but it had slipped her mind. She would have to see maybe at lunch. Ash new about the dinner and asked if she could ask Dylan to come too. Stacy didn't mind but she didn't know if he would or not. She did know though that Ash wanted him to go so she hoped he would say yes.

Giving a laugh and a shake of her head Hunter was right she did think to much. But sometimes that was a good thing. Hearing tease about Jason Katie rolls her eyes. If she had known Hunter a little more she might have wacked him over the back of the head.

"Yeah, Don't want to get your but kicked by another girl's man. Though it might help your image with your friends."

Though it was sad it was slightly funny too. Taking the number and putting it into her pocket Katie would put it into her phone when she got home. Grabbing another napkin she jots down the number and hands it to Hunter.

"There you go its my cell too. I pretty much answer text or calls any time of night. I'm not to sound of a sleeper. I just might do that...Thanks Hunter for the nice time."

Putting her jacket on Katie new the night had to end. It had been fun though better than planned and for a few hours she had forgotten about the hardships of life and just had fun.

Your Day

Hunter rolls his eyes but doesn't argue with Katie about paying. "You women think too much."

Being asked for his number, a little grin emerges. "Better not tell your boyfriend you're going around asking for guys' numbers," he teases. Grabbing a napkin, he fishes a pen from his jacket and jots down a number. "That's my cell phone." He gets another napkin and pushes it towards her with his pen. "Your turn." He wasn't going to let her get away with taking his number and leaving him empty handed. Maybe he was being flirty again, but in reality, he really had had a good time, and figured he could go for an evening like this again. Hanging out with his rowdy friends had its benefits, but... maybe deep down he missed some of the quiet. This had been nice. No shouting, drunken stupidness, girls or riding the fine line of the law. It had been a long time since he'd had an evening with someone away from all that. This... reminded him of being with his close friends from Break Out. With friends like Kyle. And Alice.

Shoving aside those memories, he forces another smile. "Next time your boyfriend makes you feel like crap, just give him a slap upside the head or something. Then call me and he can stew about it while we have dinner again."

Turning around in the barn aisle, Eric gives Ashlee a smile. "Hey there, birthday girl." He chuckles. "Thought you might sleep a little longer on your day off school."

He shakes his head in amusement. Her enthusiasm for being in the barn never ceased to amaze him. "Today.... we take it easy." He gives her a knowing look. He was aware the she knew his leg was bothering him, so there was no need to go over that again. It was a good excuse to let her have a fun day though. The hardest part would be keeping riding lessons a secret until she got her boots. At least, that was his plan.

"So - we can clean some tack... we can scrub feeding buckets... we can do some grooming... or we can go count dandelions in the yard." He tosses her a wink. "It's your day today, so you get to decide."

Number

Wondering into the barn Ashlee hada smile on her face. It might be her birthday but that didn't mean she was going to skip out on her work. She enjoyed it and that always made the day better and today wasn't going to stop her from doing what she did every morning.

Looking around the barn and finding Eric Ashlee walks up to him and gives a little wave. She new he wouldn't be doing to much today because of his leg but even if they said and oiled some leather it would be well worth it to her.

"Good Morning Eric! I was hopping I'd find you here this morning. What tasks do we have in front of us today?"

Taking a bit of her shrimp Katie can't help but close her eyes as a smile spreads across her lips. This had to be some of the best, fresh shrimp she had, had in a long time. Every bite she wanted another and another thankful this was the item she choose.

As she eat Katie listened to Hunter intently just learning a few new things about him him. Racing kind of sounded like fun though Katie wasn't to sure she'd ever want to go to one. The crowed sounded rowdy and just some place she might not fit in, but who new she might check it out...at least once. His friends...the sounded dumber than she had thought though she hadn't voiced that to Hunter, those were definitely not people Katie would hang out with if she didn't have too.

Once the check had come and Katie had gotten her extra food in a container she digs into her jacket pocket to pull out some money. Tonight had been well worth it and enjoy some time with a friend had been good too. Katie was happy she had met up with Hunter in the store and they had the chance to try and work on a friendship.

"I am sure I don't want you to pay. You don't have to buy me food to say thank you. I think simply saying "thank you" works good. Also you keep me company too so that seems pretty fair...but you want to do something extra...how about a number I can call you at in case I want to hang out again."

Company

Hunter accepts Katie's addition to the toast with a wide smile. This might be the fastest friendship he'd ever formed, not to mention the most odd. What were the odds he'd be having dinner with the same woman who had arrested him? That was fodder for a sitcom, not real life - not his life anyway. It was also the first time his stupid flirting had led to anything but shallow conversation over a couple of beers. Katie wasn't shallow though - that much was obvious. She was different. She was... the kind of company he used to keep. And in a way... it made Hunter miss his old life away from the glamor, meaningless relationships, competition and showing off. Katie was real, and she looked right past his attempts to impress with cockiness.

Clinking his glass on hers, he takes a sip then smacks his lips. "Ahhh.... and now...." He sets his drink down and picks up his knife and fork. "We dine before my stomach eats itself."

Cutting off a piece of juicy steak, he dips it in barbecue sauce before taking a bite and murmuring with content. "This place's steaks are the best kept secret in town," he muses.

While eating, conversation naturally slowed, although Hunter keeps it up just a little with light chatter about his racing mostly, or the kinds of idiots he hung out with. By the time the check came, he was leaned back in the booth with an empty dinner plate in front of him.

It was getting late in the evening, but he didn't really want it to end. Sighing, he eyes the check then looks over at Katie. "You sure you won't let me pay? I promise I won't call it a date. I just want to thank you for keeping me company."

Today was a day Eric would have stayed in bed. Should have stayed in bed. His leg was killing him, and Angel had confirmed that an infection had started once again. Hopefully they'd caught it fast enough this time though, so he was back on antibiotics to take care of it. She'd warned him to take it easy, so... he would... but he wasn't going to stay inside all day. Not today, of all days.

Rising early, he'd gone straight to Moonbeam's stall. The little bay mare had loved the extra grooming, and Eric had brushed her coat until it shone, her four white socks standing out brightly. Afterward, he'd chosen some easy tasks, helping feed but leaving the stall cleaning to Dylan. He kept his eye on the doorway though, waiting to see when Ashlee might come wandering in. There would be a little party later at lunchtime in the dining hall, but he wanted to be sure to wish her a happy birthday if he saw her beforehand.
