Beautiful

Jason grins as Misty sits on his lap, slipping his arm around her waist. Still able to drink his tea, he nods. "Yep, I'm comfortable. And Alec thought it couldn't be done."

Alec rolls his eyes, but is grinning too. He can't help but wonder for just a moment though... if Carson knew what he was missing. Misty was... indescribably kind, smart, strong, and downright gorgeous. She was showing just a little bit - one might not even guess she was expecting yet. But Alec saw that new sparkle in her eye and that glow in her face - he wondered if Carson even knew at all what a beautiful thing he had chosen not to witness. And it was a pity.

Just relaxing in the chair, Jason lets Misty pick whatever she wanted on television. This wasn't how he'd planned his evening - if she hadn't texted him, he'd still be sound asleep at home. But he was glad she had. Even if they weren't alone, he still enjoyed being here.

Once his tea was finished, he sits back a little and keeps both arms around Misty, making sure she's comfortable. If he wasn't careful, he might fall right to sleep again.

As it was though, it was Alec who drifted off. The tea had done the trick, and though trying to watch the program on television, he just couldn't keep his eyes open any longer. Soon, he was resting soundly once more.

Being told he took after their dad was probably the biggest compliment Eli could receive. Their father had been everything to them, and as a boy, Eli had always wanted to be just like him. He could only hope that he would be as kind, wise and strong.

Returning Ryan's hug, Eli grins as she kisses his cheek. It wasn't all that often that she was affectionate, but he didn't mind one bit. Sometimes it was nice to reinforce their close sibling relationship.

Her promise brings a little sigh - he wanted to go straight to Alec right this minute and knock his block off. But if Ryan would rather wait and see if he did anything else then... Eli knew he should respect that.

"Okay... You better keep that promise." He gives her shoulders a squeeze. "And... is this something you'd rather Tal not know, or...?"

Comfortable

Giving a laugh Misty heads into the other room giving a shake of her head. Getting into the living room Misty looks around for a moment before hearing Jason's comment. She couldn't help the smile that spread across her face again. This should be intrusting.

"Well I guess I will than, better do it now before I become to fat I squish you."

Setting the cup down on the table next to the chair Misty gives a smile and eases herself down on Jason. Getting comfortable she grabs the remote putting her arm around his neck and flips the tv on.

"Alright lets see what we have here. You comfortable?"

Moving her legs to let her brother sit down Ryan gives a small laugh before swatting her brother's hand away from her knees. She wasn't ticklish in many places but that was one of the spots where it really did get her the most.

Letting out a sigh Ryan looks over at her brother and gives a soft smile. She new her brother felt bad and if he could take everything away he would. But this was something she would have to work though. It was her feelings that were all messed up and maybe just maybe a little more time and things really would be ok.

"Thanks Eli, for always being there for me. Ya know I really think you take after dad more than you'll ever know."

Sitting up completely Ryan sits a little closer to her brother and puts her arms around his neck in a hug and giving him a kiss on the cheek. She was happy he'd come and stayed with her, having him here just made things better and she loved having her family close again. Even if her heart felt like it was breaking she new if she asked Eli would make sure no one messed with her again.

"If he keeps bothering me I'll let you know. Cross my heart ok?"

Not a pretty sight

Listening to Ryan, Eli holds his tongue a little longer. He could sense the confusion in his sister and he saw the pain in her eyes, which in turn, caused a pain in his own heart. He couldn't stand to see her hurting - it was the worst kind of torture for him.

Watching her carefully, one of Eli's worst fears seemed to be surfacing. Ryan didn't even have to say it... she wouldn't hurt like she did, if she didn't still have feelings for Alec. How deep those feelings ran, Eli didn't know. But they were there, and he knew it.

Realizing, though, that Ryan really was close to tears, he rises slowly from his chair. Coming over to the couch, he reaches down and lifts up Ryan's feet before sitting down, then letting her legs rest over his lap. He wriggles her knee teasingly, just like he used to when they were kids and he'd wanted to annoy her with tickling.

With a deep sigh, he leans his head back on the couch, letting his mind think before he ran off at the mouth. He knew Ryan didn't deserve his wrath no matter how mad he was. "Please don't cry," he requests. "'Cause then I want to cry, and watching me do that is not a pretty sight." The attempt to lighten the mood was lame, he knew. But it was all he had.

"I'm sorry, Sis... just that this is happening. I wish I could make it better. I wish I could... erase everything that happened. I wish I could..." He bites his tongue along with another sigh. "Ah well... you know how I feel about Alec."

Giving her leg a pat, he falls quiet again for several minutes. "If he upsets you this much though... I mean it about me stopping it. I don't want him to hurt you any more than he already has."

Grinning, Jason isn't so sure he believes Misty that he always knew what to say, but if she thought so, he'd let her and... it did make him feel good. Watching her with the tea, he also rises slowly. Joining her at the counter, he takes one of the teabags, letting it bob up and down in the steaming water. "TV sounds alright as long as Alec doesn't mind."

"I don't," comes a mumbled voice from the living room.

Jason can't help his laugh. "Stop eavesdropping." He knew his previous conversation with Misty had been much quieter, so he didn't fear Alec hearing them talk about him. "I thought you were asleep," he hollers into the next room.

"Not hardly. Not with this headache."

Jason smiles and winks at Misty, picking up two of the cups and heading for the living room. "Well maybe this will help."

Alec props himself up and accepts the hot drink, setting aside the ice pack for now. "Thanks."

"Mm-hmm." Jason looks around for a moment, glancing to the couch, to the floor, to the easy chair and back again. "Well... Misty, I guess we're stuck." He chooses the big comfy chair, careful not to spill the tea. "You're just gonna have to sit on my lap."

Alec snickers, not moving his legs from being stretched out over the couch. "Now this I gotta see."

Cry

Hearing Eli's reply and the silence that was what gave him the way the most. No ball, no sigh, no heavy breathing there was just nothing. Finally lowing the magazine again Ryan looks over her legs at her brother for a long moment. The whole thing did bother her but was she going to admit that?

"I...I don't know if it will keep up or not. I don't think its anything harmful maybe just a thank you? I...it did upset me, when he came, and when he sent me the flowers I just...idk Eli."

Letting out a sigh and putting her hands behind her head Ryan lets out a long sigh. She new what she wanted to feel and what she should feel and yet there was something else that lingered. But was she ready to talk about that yet?

"I don't know Eli, I don't know. Maybe he wont bother anymore? I just...hurts ya know. I love being around Tal, and I don't want anything more than him but Alec is around...it makes me hurt all over and I just...want to cry."

Feeling Jason's hand on top of hers Misty can't help but smile. Looking up at Jason he really did make her feel good and she can feel her cheeks getting slightly red. He's never know how good he really made her feel. She felt special, like worth a million words in his eyes.

"You just know the right things to say at all times don't you?"

Bringing Jason's hand up and giving it a kiss Misty stands going back to the whistling tea pot. Taking it and pouring the water into the cups Misty dunks the tea bags before looking to Jason.

"Want to help me with this? Maybe we can find something on tv to watch for a little bit."

Nip It

Alec knew that Misty might never even realize what her simple touch did to him, but it was indeed a comfort to him. Left alone again, he eases back down on his side, keeping the ice pack pressed to his head. Someday... someday he'd feel better. Someday the nightmares would be gone. Someday the stress and heartache would be gone. Someday...

Jason nods, understanding what Misty was saying about the Agency. Thankfully he'd never experienced it himself, but the truth of the matter was very evident in those he knew and worked with. It was a shame that they had to go through these kinds of things... and yet, it was a natural consequence of a life they had chosen.

"Yeah..." He was glad Alec was accepting help as well. A few months ago he couldn't have cared less. But now... after spending some time with the man Alec was now... it did make a difference.

"He's pretty fortunate to have you in his life," Jason comments softly. "If he didn't, I can't imagine where he'd be now." Most likely homeless or in with the wrong crowd just to survive.

A smile comes to his lips and his hand slides over to Misty's. "You're just a pretty special woman."

Listening to Ryan, Eli has a hard time concentrating on the tennis ball, but he keeps it up, just letting her talk. He bristles at the mention of Alec though. He'd had a feeling this all had something to do with him, but he just hadn't been sure how. Who was to say Alec hadn't genuinely needed to go to J&J's though? And he hadn't asked for Ryan specifically, so no one could begrudge him service. Although she just admitted it had upset her.

Thump... Thump... The ball continues to bounce off the wall as Eli stands to the side with Zidan.

When the flowers are mentioned though, the ball comes whizzing back into Eli's hand, stopping short as it smacks his palm. His eyes jerk towards his sister as a new tension grips his spine. Though letting her finish, he could already feel himself growing livid. His hand squeezes the tennis ball tightly to relieve his anger and keep him from yelling at Ryan, who was innocent in this whole thing.

Finally tossing the ball to Zidan, he then wanders to his chair and sits down, leaning back and rubbing his chin, not even realizing it was exactly what their father used to do when upset and trying to keep cool.

Looking over to Ryan, he sees the back of the magazine instead of her face. "Flowers, huh?" He purses his lips, still thinking. Going to the shop for business was one thing. Sending Ryan flowers... that was a blatant sign of interest, whether Alec had been saying thank you or not. And in Eli's mind, it had been completely uncalled for.

"You, um... expecting Alec to keep this up? 'Cause I'll nip it right in the bud - you just have to say the word, and he won't dare come near you again."

Letting Us

Standing and walking past him to the kitchen Misty lays a hand on his shoulder giving it a little squeeze. She new how hard it must be for Alec to just trust someone and let them take care of him. Being on you own for so long its kind of like a shock to your system. But she was happy he was trying to let her.

"Alright, a small cup coming right up."

Heading into the kitchen Misty gives Jason a smile as she pass him and heads to the cubord. Pulling out three cups she also turns the tea pot on. It could be at least 10 minutes before it was ready so that was a little more time to chat with Jason.

"Mmmm...Yeah I think he will be. He just had a bad dream, another symptom of the Agency for one reason or another."

Sitting down and letting out a small sigh Misty was happy Jason had come over tonight. Even if it wasn't the quiet late night date she was looking for him being close was still nice and she new things would be ok. Jason just had something about him that Misty was comfortable with. She never had to worry about intention or reason with him.

"Once you get out for those who are lucky enough its hard to actually break away completely. Your past will always haunt you, faces will always invade you mind, and the deeds of the past will always be remembered. It just takes a strong person to keep going... I'm happy Alec is letting us help."

Laying on the couch with her legs bent and crossed to hold up her car magazine Ryan lowers it for a moment to look at Eli as he talks about running into Axel. Bringing her magazine up again Ryan gives a small little shrug. It was strange for him to ask about her but she new why he was and she couldn't blame her brother for wondering what might be going on.

"Oh..Um...yeah things at work are ok. Alec came in the other day and asked if I would take a look at his bike. We he didn't ask if I would but the guys pawned it off on me"

Pausing for a moment Ryan new Eli probley wouldn't be to happy with this new bit of information. If he had any thought that Alec might be bother Ryan he would be after him in a heart beat. Ryan didn't know what she felt about the whole thing. It was hard to desypher what she was thinking for feeling. She new she liked Tal alot, and wanted to be with him but there was something about Alec, she couldn't put her finger on it but there was something.

"So I looked over his bike and fixed it for him. I guess Axel saw I was a little upset because he wanted to know if I was ok and I told him I'd survive....and...Alec sent me flowers as a thank you and that was something I had no expected."

Ryan really hadn't mean to tell her brother all that stuff but it was just so easy. Eli was a easy person to talk to and one of Ryan's best friends. If she couldn't talk to him who could she talk too? Not to mention she never hid stuff from him even if he'd be upset.

"So...thats probley what it was about."

Usually Doesn't

Alec sighs, but nods. Even though he felt a bit embarrassed, he knew Misty was right. It was just a dream, and he would be fine. Sometimes the dreams were about the bad things the Agency had done to him. And sometimes they were about him doing the bad things. Either way, it was a nightmare. The Agency was truly like a drug. As a drug would have terrible side effects and could ruin people's lives, they would still crave it and need it and enjoy it when they took it. The Agency could treat its agents terribly and even torture them. But they also gave their people a false sense of purpose and power - that which was addictive. No matter who you were, if the Agency kept you long enough and allowed you that sense of purpose and control, they would have you hooked... as Alec had been.

Lifting his eyes to Misty again, he shakes his head a little, then it turns into another nod. He wasn't normally a tea drinker but... maybe tonight it would be a good thing. "Yeah, okay... just a small cup...."

He glances down then up again, his eyes so tired. "Thanks." For so long, he could depend on no one. But he knew he could depend on Misty.

In the kitchen, Jason waits until Misty comes. "He okay?" he asks quietly.

"Ran into Axel at the gas station today." Eli tosses a tennis ball at the living room wall, catching it as it flew back at him, too far over Zidan's head for him to catch it. It was an easy way to keep himself occupied, along with the dog, without having to deal with a slobbery ball.

Eli glances to the side at the couch where his sister was. It was late evening and Tal had just left for home after spending supper with them. "He asked me how you were," he continues, letting another pause linger before he concentrates on his tennis ball again. "I know he's a friend and all, but he usually doesn't ask," he muses. "Kinda made me wonder if things at work had been alright..."

8/21/12

Tea

Misty gives a smile and a soft pat to Alec's hand. Seeing Jason had left the room she new he hadn't gone far but Alec would be a little more open with her. Not that he didn't like Jason but he just didn't care to spread all of the stuff going on around.

"Mmmm...I know that well. Happens to lots of people there who get out. Sometimes even if our past is gone and forgiven it can still come back to bite us."

Cocking her head a little bit she trys to catch Alec's eye with her own. Giving a little nod and she remembered when Carson had his nightmares. Some times it was hard for her to sleep next to him because he thrashed in bed so much. But slowly over time they had become better and better.

"You right it is just a dream and as long as you know that, than you can beat them and stop stressing out your to young for that."

Misty gives Alec's leg a little tap and a small laugh before standing. Now with all the excitement Misty wasn't any closer to being tired than she was before. Maybe a little tea would do her some good. And it would give her a chance to chat with Jason in the kitchen a little more and that was always a plus side.

"Want me to make you some tea to help get ya back to sleep?"

Crap

Only when Jason is mentioned does Alec take a look around to find that it was not just him and Misty. His cheeks flush slightly and he moves onto the couch quietly. This wasn't exactly something he liked other people to see, even if it was just Jason.

Wincing a little as Misty checks him over, he just sits quietly until she returns with an ice pack. Setting it on his head, he bites his lip. It was cold and it hurt, but he knew it would help.

Her question lowers his gaze and he shrugs lamely. Glancing back up again, he sees Jason has left the room, leaving him a little more free to talk. "It's just Agency crap," he finally admits. He knew it had happened to Carson... it happened to Gage... and probably most anybody else who had gotten out of the Agency. It was like an unavoidable side affect.

"I guess it happens more when I'm under stress." He eyes Misty for a moment. "I'm okay though... it's just a dream, right?"

In the kitchen Jason sits at the table, leaving Alec and Misty be. He didn't want to but in, and he knew good and well that Alec would talk more if he wasn't there. He was content just to wait in here for as long as it took until Misty was free again.

Chatting

Moving out of the way of the flying fist quickly it miss Misty and she ready's herself encase there was more. She could tell Alec was sleeping and more than likely had a bad dream. Just kneeling there she lets Alec bring her into focus before doing anything else. Seeing he was awake most of the way now she smiles and helps him up to the couch to check his head.

"Nah you didn't wake me up. Jason and I were just sitting outside chatting. Here let me take a look at your head."

Sitting down next to him Misty gives a little nod to Jason that everything would be ok. It was in fact just a bad dream and nothing more. Taking a look at Alec's head Misty doesn't see a cut but there was a nice welt forming and for sure there would be a wicked headache to follow.

"No cuts or anything but a nice bump. Let me get you some ice ok? I'll be right back."

Leaving and heading to the kitchen Misty goes to the fridge and pulls out one of the ice packs wrapping it in a towel. Coming back into the living room She hands it to Alec for his head before sitting next to him again. She figured it was something to do with the Agency that got Alec all worked up, but it really could be anything too. She just wanted to make sure he was ok.

"Are you gonna be ok Alec? Do you want to talk about the dream?"

Did I?

Following Misty inside, Jason is a little on edge, not sure what was going on, if Alec had been fast asleep earlier. Entering the living room and seeing him on the floor, then catching Misty's eye, he comes a little nearer, now concerned as well, but giving them both space.

Alec continued to rock slightly, his eyes clenched tightly shut, his whole body rigid. Mumbling incoherently, it was obvious that his nightmare was hanging on. As Misty talks to him and lays a hand on his shoulder though, he's yanked into reality. His eyes fly open and his fist shoots in Misty's direction, missing her face by mere inches. Jerking away from her, he sits bolt upright, his heart racing. Wedged between the couch and the coffee table, he blinks, trying to catch his breath as his head throbs.

Jason takes a step forward, knowing Alec had been asleep, but still not quite trusting him not to hurt Misty.

Alec's eyes slowly focus in the dim light and he squints at Misty, for a moment completely lost and needing to figure out where he was. Finally realizing it's her, his whole body visibly relaxes. A quiet curse slips out before he leans his head on the table, feeling nauseous and dizzy. Closing his eyes again, he swallows hard. "I'm sorry," he mumbles. "I was just... it um... bad dream."

Jason relaxes a little, and hearing Alec, he feels somewhat badly for him. He knew Carson had had nightmares every once in a while - remnants of the Agency. Did Alec suffer the same things? He wondered.

Remaining on the floor, only now does Alec realize how much his head hurt and he rubs it gingerly. With eyes only half open again, he doesn't even see Jason yet. "I didn't wake you, did I?"

Well...if

Sitting and just continuing to listen to Jason talk Misty was a bit surprised to hear a small hint of bitterness. She couldn't blame him though no matter how long it had been. She was pretty bitter twords Carson herself and the woman he was with. To see them walk through a door she might give them a cold shoulder herself if not walk up to them and punch them in the face. It did make her wonder a little, did he still miss Katie? She'd guess yes from his comment though they had never talked about it. Really...it was only normal.

"I'm happy too, no matter what thats what is important. Happiness, and acceptance. I do think its going to be one of those things that we need to wait and see what happens."

Leaning into Jason again for a second Misty gives a small smile. She new everyone was a little on edge and she was sure Katie was as well. She'd never had a problem with Katie in the past, and she really did hope everything would still be ok.

"Well...if I plan on being as nice to Katie as I always have been so if she has an issue with me, I'll just ignore it."

Hearing the bang that breaks through the silence of the night Misty gives a jump before looking at Jason and than back at the door to the house. She wasn't normally jumpy but this had come out of nowhere and she wasn't sure what was going on.

"Alec's inside but when I came out I checked on him and he was fast asleep."

Shifting on the steps a little bit Misty goes to the door and slowly opens it waiting for Jason before setting inside. Looking around everything looked normal not like anyone was inside, and the same lights where on that she'd left.

Walking into the living room Misty can see Alec's feet sticking out from the end of the couch on the floor. Feeling her heart race a little bit she was quick to go over to him. Seeing him there on the ground she could tell he was in pain but he was asleep too. Looking to Jason she was a bit worried before bending down next to him and putting a hand on his shoulder.

   "Alec, wake up Hun...Alec."

That's That

Jason sighs, pursing his lips in thought. "I don't know... I hope so. I'd rather Reese not throw Katie and me back together as a team right away. I mean, I hope she's worked some things out while she's been away, but... the way she was before she left... to be quite honest, I hope she can do her job at all."

Leaning his head to the side, it rests against Misty's. "It hasn't been easy for me, with the whole emotional thing and there are still days that it's hard. But Katie was... I don't know... out of control. I just don't wanna get stuck working with her and have there be problems, and I know Reese won't tolerate our personal lives interfering."

Deep down  though, there was still pain. Pain of rejection. Pain of his very closest friend - his partner in more ways than one - not even believing his words. It had been a while now... but there was still pain there.

"As far as anything else goes, she'll just have to accept the changes. If she's mad at me for moving on, she shouldn't be since last I heard, that boyfriend of hers was still in Texas with her - talk about moving on. And if she's mad at you for dating me, then that's just stupid. So logically..."

He rolls his eyes and straightens up, turning his face to kiss the top of Misty's head. "I guess I don't care about logic anymore. I'm happy and that's that."

"No... no.... stop..." Alec's mumblings break the quiet atmosphere of the living room. He writhes on the couch, having long since tossed off his blanket and lost his pillow.

"Stop it... leave me alone... no... no, I won't." Sweat pours down his face as he fights the invisible nightmare. He twists and turns, moaning and mumbling more incoherent words.

"I wont! No!"

Swinging a fist in the air, the movement displaces his balance and he tumbles off the couch. Landing with a thud, his head bangs into the coffee table. Crying out in pain, he curls into a ball on the floor, one arm around his leg, while his free hand holds the side of his head. Rocking slightly, he's caught somewhere between asleep and awake, but too fearful of his nightmare to open his eyes.

Hearing a bang from inside the house, Jason tenses before looking at Misty. "What was that? Is Alec asleep?"

8/20/12

Work Ok

Leaning into Jason a little as he sits down next to her and slings his arm over her shoulder Misty lets out a small sigh. Hearing Jason sigh as well she could tell something was bothering him. She was going to ask when instead he tells her. If she'd had to guess she would of said that was it. Today she thought she'd over heard Reese talking to Rick but she wasn't sure. But now she did know.

"Mmm...yeah I could understand where you're coming from. I have to admit I am kind of nervous about her coming back to and finding that things have changed. But I guess at the same time I remember too she is the one who walked away and maybe just making her trip to Texas did some good and there wont be drama when she returns."

Misty couldn't help but wonder if because Katie would be back if things would change. Knowing Jason she would say no because she did know how loyal he was. But in the back of her mind it was a worry anyways and she hoped everything would be smooth and her and Katie could still be friends.

"I guess I just hope and pray that no drama will be started. Do you think you'll be able to work with her ok?"

What to Expect

Accepting and returning Misty's kiss, Jason grins. "He does give good kisses...but he's saving those for his lady friends."

Giving her lips another quick kiss, he finally retreats, slipping his arm around her shoulders and just sitting with her on the step. City sounds fill the night air, and it makes him think, for a moment, about the peace and quiet of the Texas ranch. He always had a hard time adjusting to the quiet, then again to the noise when returning.

Thoughts of the ranch just bring his mind back to another topic though, which, in turn, presents a sigh.

"Reese called me today," he mentions. "Said Katie's coming back to work on Monday." His fingers absentmindedly rub Misty's shoulder. "Kinda feel funny about it, ya know? Don't really know what to expect."

"You've got to tell him sometime, Dylan!"

"Not now!" Dylan yanks Sparky's hand toward him to stuff the bills into his palm. "Just... just put it in the safe like you said you would."

Sparky give half a growl as he tucks the money in his pocket. "I didn't say I'd help so you could keep on skirting around the truth."

"I know." Dylan's tone had calmed. Folding his arms, he sighs and looks around the darkened ranch yard, frustrated.

Neither were usually up at this hour, but Dylan had stayed up late doing homework and Sparky had needed to do some checking on a couple expecting mares. Meeting up with his nephew hadn't been a surprise though, after they'd been to another auction this morning...

"...and I'll be, he bought that horse, turned right around, gave it a good grooming and an hour later he'd sold it for a hundred dollar profit." Sparky shook his head. "At the same time, he told me to buy this other bay gelding. I figured he was crazy, but gave him a chance. Sure enough, he did the same thing. Bought it, cleaned him up, turned around and sold him all over again, this time for a two hundred dollar profit."

Mick's eyebrows were raised as he heard about Dylan's activities at the horse auction that day. His son had never wanted to go with him... but he'd gone with Sparky and apparently had a pretty good time. It was surprising and kind of disappointing at the same time. "What's he gonna do with his money?"

"Don't know. He said he was gonna save it. At any rate, he wants to go again with me sometime. Figure I ought to let him."

"Well with those odds, why not?"

...That had been the first time. There had been several more auctions after that, and each time, Dylan had done the same thing. It was only the second time though, when he'd admitted to Sparky just what he wanted the money used for.

"You know your dad is gonna find out one way or the other."

Dylan shrugs. "Probably. But I might as well put off him yelling at me a while longer, if I can make it right."

"Replacing that money doesn't make it right. Telling the truth does."

Dylan shoots Sparky a glare. "Just a little while longer... please."

Another sigh is exhaled before Sparky nods. "Alright. Okay. Just..." He sets a hand on Dylan's shoulder. "Promise me you'll tell him."

"I will. Soon."

"Okay." Sparky lets his hand drop before turning to leave. "Goodnight, Dylan."

"Yeah, goodnight." Standing alone in the dark for several more minutes, Dylan finally heads for his bunkhouse. Reaching it though, instead of going inside, he eases down on the porch. Stretching his legs out across the top step, he lifts his eyes to the stars that dotted the black sky. Would life ever get easier?

Letting his curtain fall shut, Hunter hobbles back to his bed before lying down and wincing as he props up his leg. Seeing Dylan out there reminded him all too much of himself. Then again... tonight had been the night for a lot of thinking anyway. He did wonder, though, how a guy like Dylan could not have a good relationship with a father like Mick.

Closing his eyes, Hunter yawns and tries to fall asleep. Though succeeding, his dreams would be flooded with memories.

Good Kisses

Getting Jason's return text Misty gives a smile. She was happy Jason agreed to come over even if it was late. She just didn't feel like sleeping yet, and there was really nothing else to do. Slipping the phone back into her pocket Misty would wait. She new it wouldn't take Jason long to get there.

As like Misty guessed it didn't take long as all till she saw Jason's truck pull into the driveway. Staying seated she smiles as he comes up the walkway. Watching him she could see the tired look in his eye and she can tell maybe she'd woken him up. But at the same time it made her feel good knowing he'd come anyways to spend a little time with her.

"Nope, I can't. It was lonely and just to nice of a night to spend it alone or maybe its just the kisses I can't live without."

Misty's own eyes glisten with humor in the moon light as she looks back into Jason's eyes, a little bit of color comes to her cheeks. There was something about Jason that caused her to blush and she wasn't sure what it was, but it must be something good even if it did feel strange.

As Jason leans closer Misty can't help the cold chill that runs up her spine as Jason drew closer to her. She could feel his breath on her skin, it was heavy but cool, she could smell his slight hint of soap from his clean shirt. Leaning farther in herself she press her lips to Jason's and lets the kiss linger for a long moment. Finally pulling away she shyly grins up at Jason again.

"Mmmm...I'm not sure spending time with Trooper might be more fun, I hear he gives good kisses."

Wasn't any fun

Jason's vibrating phone in his pocket causes him to pry his eyes open. He'd been sacked out on the couch for at least an hour and was having a hard time waking up enough to realize it was his phone that had disturbed his sleep. Finally digging in his pocket, he retrieves his phone to check the message.

Reading Misty's text, he was a little surprised to know she was feeling the baby already. Not that he was an expert, but his mom had been at least four months along before she'd mentioned any of Kaylee's activity, and he remembered her telling him that time frame was pretty normal. Perhaps he shouldn't be surprised about this baby though - it was Misty and Carson's, after all.

Realizing just how Misty had stated her message, he has to grin. He knew what she meant, but if anybody else read it, they'd think the baby was his. Yawning, he rolls over on his back and flips his phone open to reply.

It had been his day off and he'd spent most of it doing yard work, laundry and grocery shopping. Since Misty had to work late, they'd just met for lunch and said they'd see each other tomorrow. Now it was late evening, and though unplanned, Jason wouldn't mind going over to Misty's - he wondered if Alec had already called it a night and if that's why she was perhaps bored.

Sounds like fun. Give me a few mins.
I'll be over.

Dragging himself from the couch, he trudges to his room to find a clean t-shirt, but leaves on his old faded and grass-stained jeans. After telling Trooper he'd be back, he slips on his sneakers and is out the door.

It only takes a few minutes to get to Misty's, and the traffic lights were on his side. Pulling into the driveway, he sees Misty still on the porch and he smiles. Cutting the engine, he slides from his truck and ambles up the short sidewalk. Though awake, his eyes still held a sleepy look to them, his hair still just slightly matted from his nap.

Stepping up on the porch, he grins, leaning in close to Misty. "Just can't live without me, huh?" His eyes give her a teasing glint. He knew that was hardly the case, but it was fun to tease just the same.

He leans a little closer, his lips tantalizingly closer to hers. "It wasn't any fun just me and Trooper anyway," he whispers.

Kicking

Walking with Hunter back to his bunk Katie takes it slow not wanting to rush it even if Hunter was tired. She wanted to spend as much time with him while she can. Getting to the porch and leaning in for a kiss Katie gives a smile. At least they would have a few days left together . Giving a laugh at Hunter's comment Katie gives a nod.

"Mmm...I guess you will have too. Maybe thought, just maybe the time will fly by and before we know it you can be joining me in Nevada again. At least thats what I hope."

Leaning in again and giving Hunter a kiss Katie new for now it was good night. She'd see Hunter again bright and early in the morning and they could have another fun filled day of doing something to keep them busy.

   "Have a good night Hunter."

Turning Katie heads down the small walkway before hitting the grass. She wasn't very tired yet herself so a path to the mess hall is where she went. Maybe there were still some night owls awake and a game of cards could be started or anything else for that matter. At least it would be something to do till she was tired.

Sitting on the front pouch it was a nice night out. Not to late that it would be strange to sit outside but late enough that it was cool and enjoyable. Leaning back on the railing Misty puts a hand on her stomach. She'd been able to start feeling the baby move more and more. It put a smile on her face and made this whole thing that much more real but at the same time it made her slightly sad too. She was determined to stay happy though. She really did have lots going for her. She was going to be a mother, she had Jason, and Alec was starting to look better each day.

Taking out her phone Misty gives  a little smile as she opens a text to Jason.

I have a spot on the porch for you, and kicking baby with your name on it.

Stock up

Hearing Katie had to be back to work Monday, Hunter knew she'd have to leave very early Sunday morning, if not Saturday night. He was a little disappointed - he'd hoped she might have at least another week. But he knew she did have a job and, unlike him, she was under someone else's schedule.

Catching her eye, he gives her a little smile, so she'd at least not feel too badly, and he nudges her foot for extra measure.

Mick licks some chocolate off his fork before shaking his head at Katie. "You know you don't need to thank us. This is one of your homes. We're always happy to have you."

It would be at least an hour later before Hunter was saying goodnight to Katie outside his bunkhouse. There had been an invitation for UNO, but he was strangely exhausted and would prefer to get a good night's sleep this time. Standing by the small porch, it was awkward with his crutches since he couldn't just wrap his arms around Katie like he wanted to. A kiss to the lips would have to suffice, and he offers her one.

"Guess I better get in all I can for the next couple days, eh?" he teases. "Gotta stock up for when you're gone."

Sooner

Sitting at the table one again with the whole family Katie was happy to be here. Hunter close to her good dessert in hand and just enjoying the chatter. This would always be home, no matter where she lived. Taking a bit of her cake and leaning back in her chair Katie looks around the table. She new she didn't NEED to tell anyone when she would be leaving but it would be respectful if she did. Now seemed to be the best time as ever to do so.

"So I talked with Reese this afternoon and he said I could start work again Monday."

It was only a few days from today and much sooner than she planned so she hoped no one would be upset least of all Hunter.

"I guess they are really tight on people and Reese seemed pretty stressed So I told him that should be ok. I just want to thank you Uncle Mick and Aunt Rosetta for letting me come here again. I always feel like I never left when I come back."

Looking around the table and than back at Hunter Katie's eyes held some sorrow in them. She was sad she would be leaving Hunter a little early but she also was hoping he would not be mad about it. Maybe Hunter would recover faster than they expected too and he could come back sooner too.

Sweet woman

Hunter wriggles his nose around, trying to get the bubbles off, but when he can't, he ends up wiping them off onto Katie's shirt. "Yeah, you missed me alright." He smirks at her, but his eyes twinkle. There was something else in his gaze now though... something that said whatever he'd been talking about with Mick was more than just the weather. He doesn't let on to what it was though.

Seeing the cake, Mick gives a dramatic sigh. "Oh, you are a sweet woman." Coming up to Rosetta, he grins before giving her a kiss on the lips. "I am way too spoiled, you know that?"

Eying the cake, Hunter smiles at Katie. "I don't think I'll ever get used to the food around here."

Dessert was eaten back at the dining room table and it was oh so good. Hunter had thought he was done tasting such great food - he'd been wrong. Sitting next to Katie again, he wraps his ankle around hers, but doesn't say a word as he eats. He was dying to know what her boss had said, but he'd wait to ask until after they'd left here.

Cake and Ice Cream

Keeping up a small conversation with Rosetta in the kitchen Katie was happy for this time. A little girl time to talk about nothing the guys would find important but to them it was. From guys to how Katie was nervous about going back to Nevada.

"So, I am excited but nervous at the same time. I want to get back to work but seeing Jason...it's gonna feel a little awkward and I just hope we can work ok together."

Drying a few of the dishes off and place them in the cubord Rosetta stops to look at her niece for a moment. She was sad that Katie would be leaving soon, she really was a bright spot here and Rosetta loved having her around. But she also new that Katie had another life she needed to get back too.

"Oh I am sure at first it will be a little awkward but you guys should be able to work through it. Maybe you worried he will still be angry with you or maybe your angry with him?"

Looking down at the bubbles in the sink Katie runs her hand along the plate with the sponge washing it gently. Was it her own fear of what might be said or rumors that might be going around? Katie new it was something she was feeling, and she new that feeling was fear.

"Well I think...maybe I jumped to soon and now Jason might be angry with me. I know I need to tell him I am sorry but what if he wont forgive me?"

"Than he has a lot more growing and learning, not to mention what he'd be giving up. I mean he has a right to be upset and angry, but not to let it turn him bitter. As long as your doing the right thing and that is what shows how strong you are."

Giving a smile Katie was thankful for her Aunts wisdom. If she had a problem that was one person she new could always come to and would tell her right as it was without fear of her leading her wrong. Katie was thankful for that.

Jumping a little as Hunter appears over her shoulder. She hadn't even heard him come into the room but she has happy it would give her a break from the thoughts that ran through her mind. Bringing her hand to Hunter's nose Katie puts some bubbles on it before smiling.

   "Of course I missed you."

Turning around and going to the fridge Rosetta gives a smile and wink to Mick. He'd been waiting all afternoon to figure out what she was making and every time he tried to look she would just shoo him away.

"Well...Mr. Impatient since you insist on knowing..."

Bending into the fridge and than pulling out a plate with what looked like a chocolate cake Rosetta sets it on the counter. It was so elegant and looked like it too house to make.

"I made a chocolate silk cake, and some fresh vanilla ice cream."

Connected

Hearing BJ's attempt at pronouncing Einstein's name, Mick's eyebrows rise and his mouth twitches as he tries to keep from laughing. He would never make fun of BJ, nor would he want his son to think he was - it was just a little humorous, listening to the mispronunciations.

Finally smiling as BJ gets it, he nods. "Yeah, he was kinda a cool guy, wasn't he?" He takes a bite of his food, chewing it thoughtfully. "So what kind of fractions did you do?" It was his routine to ask BJ about school in the evenings - something he'd started to help the boy retain what he was learning. Some days were tough, but he seemed to be getting better at remembering what he'd learned, and Mick still believed Rosetta teaching him was the best option.

Feeling Katie's hand, Hunter returns the squeeze before glancing at her to catch her eye, just to receive the kiss on his cheek. He smiles a little, glad she wasn't embarrassed by him or anything. "Thanks."

As the meal progressed, conversation was kept light, sprinkled with laughter. It was warm... cozy... almost comforting in an odd sort of way. At least to Hunter. Mick and Rosetta were so very nice - it was so obvious they loved each other and their family. Even when Mick had to chide BJ about talking with his mouth full or interrupting a conversation, it was done gently. Katie was treated like a daughter and Hunter could tell they loved her as much as she loved them. They were more than an aunt and uncle to her.

It was because of such an atmosphere that when Hunter realizes he's staring at his plate, he surprises himself. All of a sudden he felt as though he were in a terrible mood - but for absolutely no reason whatsoever. He was having a very relaxing time and everything was so nice. Why then, did he suddenly feel on edge and...almost cranky?

Lifting his eyes, he does his best to smile and join back in the conversation, but for some weird reason, it was difficult.

Eventually as everyone is finished eating, Rosetta and Katie leave to clear the table, while BJ trots off somewhere - Hunter thought he said something about finding another truck, but he wasn't sure. Left alone with Mick, he clears his throat and rubs his thumb over a water stain on the table. Maybe his lingering awkwardness was because it had been too long since he'd been in an atmosphere like this. The closest thing he could remember was maybe Kyle's family back when he'd taken refuse at their house. An image of his angry father flashes in his mind and he swallows hard. He again hears his mother's voice on the phone, telling him that his father would not allow him to come back home. She hadn't even fought for him. Finding a couple boxes of his belongings on the step had made the whole thing final. But this... here... with these people.... this is what he'd missed out on, even when he'd been at home. Before he'd left. And maybe he hadn't even realized it until now.

Feeling a wave of emotions hit, Hunter stands and grabs his crutches. Avoiding Mick's eyes, he aims for the door. "Excuse me... I need some fresh air."

Mick watches him leave, studying the young man's behavior. He wondered if he knew what was wrong, but wasn't sure. Waiting a few minutes, he eventually rises as well and follows Hunter's route out the door. As suspected, he finds Hunter on the porch just leaning on the railing, looking out at the ranch. The lights from the dining hall shone out onto the driveway, and chatter and laughter could be heard. The sky was dim as the sun set, and some of the horses nickered restlessly out in the pasture.

Hunter hears the door but doesn't turn around. He wasn't surprised Mick had followed him. After all, he'd been rather rude. "I'm sorry," he apologizes quietly. "Every once in a while, a room gets too small."

Mick chuckles and joins him at the railing, also letting his eyes roam the ranch. "Eh... Sometimes I get that way too. I was just concerned perhaps we'd offended you."

"Oh no... no not a bit." Hunter shakes his head. "On the contrary, this is great. It's been a long time since... well..." He shrugs. "Since I've been around a happy family I guess."

Mick nods slowly. Another piece of the puzzle was slowly taking shape. "Does it bother you?"

Hunter really isn't sure. Is that why he felt like hitting something, or crying when everything around him was perfectly fine? His subconscious seems to know that answer, and he speaks before he even thinks about it. "I guess I'm still angry with my parents for not giving me the same thing." Once the words were out in the open, his eyebrows raise slightly. "And... I guess that's the first time I've said that out loud."

Mick lets a pause linger for several moments. He knew that Rosetta and Katie would know well enough not to interrupt, even if they didn't know what was going on. "Hurts... doesn't it?"

Hunter sighs. "Yeah... yeah, I guess it does. I always thought I'd gotten over it. Moved on. Then I come here, years later, and wham... that's all I've been able to think about."

Mick smiles. "Funny how that happens. Sometimes we don't know what we really missed out on until we see it other places."

"Yeah." Hunter's eyes drop as he adjusts his weight on his crutches. "Shouldn't matter though. I should be over it."

"No matter how old a man is... he still has a hole in his heart shaped like loving parents." Mick gives Hunter a sidelong glance.

Hunter huffs a sigh. "Feels like a curse to someone like me." He shrugs lamely. "Ya know... until I came here... I hadn't thought much about before I moved out from my parents. They weren't abusive. They weren't mean. I had everything I needed. But there was just... something missing." He turns to finally look at Mick. "I watch you and BJ and... and I don't remember having that kind of relationship with my dad. It was all about shutting up and growing up. I mean... anything I was interested in - like my karate - he just thought was stupid. Never came to any of my events or tournaments or anything. When I'd bring a medal home, it was a pat on the back if I was lucky, then conversation about how my grades were doing in school." Pausing, Hunter can feel a melancholy settling over him. "I guess I just never realized what I was missing. And all these years I've just... tried to ignore it, I guess." He gives a scoffing laugh. "Not that any family is perfect. I probably don't have anything to complain about."

"I'm not so sure about that." Mick folds his arms as his eyes search the sky for the first stars. "No family is perfect, but... I'd never say your situation was nothing, simply by how it's shaped you."

"How do you mean?"

"Looking for acceptance in all the wrong places is a classic sign of home neglect."

Hunter finds himself looking away again. He thinks of all his trips to the bar and hanging out with the wrong crowd. It sent a pang to his heart. "That wasn't until years later though," he argues.

"After you felt rejected for the second time."

Hunter blinks.

Mick glances at him. "You think if you'd had a family to go to when Break Out ended, you would have had such a hard time? Do you think you would have had such a hard time losing the girl to your best friend, if you hadn't felt the sting of rejection time and time again before that?"

Hunter blinks again. How did Mick know about all of that? He'd never told him. Katie? Even she didn't know everything. "How...?"

Mick shakes his head. "It doesn't matter. The pieces are there though, and they do make a logical picture if you take the time to put them together. But sometimes putting them together is painful because we're forced to relive everything."

Hunter leans his head against one of the posts. He could easily be upset with this conversation, but for the first time, the pain felt... relieving, in a way. "Most of my problems stem from my family, don't they?" he asks quietly.

"Probably. Your parents can't be blamed for your choices - you've made those. But maybe they make a little more sense now."

"I was fine for years, though. Up until Break Out, I was... well, my life was good."

"So? You'd recovered enough to survive and keep things on an even keel. When you felt betrayed by your friend, then lost your livelihood, it was too much to handle. Who else had nowhere to go?"

Hunter shrugs. "They all had somebody they could go to to stay with or get help until figuring out what to do next. Me... I just started wandering."

"Kinda felt like getting kicked out of the house all over again, didn't it?"

A lump rises in Hunter's throat. He'd never even thought about that before but now... putting it that way... it sure did make sense. "Wow..."

Mick reaches over to give Hunter's shoulder a pat. "Sometimes these little discoveries aren't easy... but in the long run they help us figure out ourselves so we can improve and become the people we want to be, rather than allowing the past to control us. Discovering why we've behaved the way we have... sometimes it helps us let go of those things that hinder us."

Let go. There it was again. A new burning question rises within Hunter. Some might not see the connection, but he felt it. "Have you always... I dunno... trusted God like you do now?"

Mick chuckles. "I wish I could say yes, but no. I rode the fence for a very long time."

"What made you finally decide to... well, give your life to Him I guess."

"I was tired of my nightmares."

Hunter was taken aback. "Nightmares?"

"Mm-hmm." Mick nods. "I think God was getting tired of me riding that fence, so He provided me with some very frightening nightmares to remind me what it would be like if I died without Him. Scared the tar out of me, but I still fought it until I'd finally had enough. I knew the truth, I knew what He was trying to tell me and... I finally gave up fighting. He was bigger than me and I knew good and well that His way was better than mine. I've struggled since then with a few things but... I've never forgotten those nightmares either. Some people might think that a bit weird, but..."

"Not me." Hunter shakes his head. "At least you knew what yours were about thought."

Mick cocks his head. "I think you know what yours are about too. Maybe you just haven't been willing to see it yet though."

Hunter bites his lip and looks out at the ranch yard again. "I..." He stops, feeling a bit silly, and scared for some reason. "When I fell in the river, I... I heard a voice." He'd told no one about this until now. Not even Katie.

"What did it say?"

"It said to let go. I thought it was literal - well, it was, in a way 'cause apparently when I relaxed, I was able to get unstuck from where my leg had caught on a log. But... I guess I can't help but believe it was figurative too."

"What do you think you're supposed to let go of?"

Hunter shrugs. "I don't know. My past? I don't know what else to do that I haven't already."

"Hmm..." Mick thinks for a moment, giving Hunter time to process. "Maybe it's as simple as letting go of that anger you were talking about."

Hunter looks at him, studying his face in the dim light. Was it as simple as that? And yet it really wasn't all that simple. Was that what this was all about? Was that the real reason for him coming here in the first place? To discover he still had harbored hurt and anger against his parents, and to realize he needed to let it go so it would stop affecting his life like it had been? He'd never even connected those things until now. Even his love of racing was connected - he knew that was something his father would have hated. It was as if he'd chosen that life out of spite. His bar visits were lame attempts to feel accepted - his drinking an attempt to forget and fit in to a crowd he didn't even like. His anger towards Kyle was just  a coverup for feeling rejected and betrayed all over again. It was all... connected. "Maybe."

Mick smiles and nods to the door. "What say we go see if dessert's ready? Rosetta wouldn't let me see what it was earlier, and I'm dying to find out."

Hunter manages a grin and nods. "Okay." Following Mick back inside, he did feel somewhat better. He had a lot of thinking to do, and a lot of things to figure out but... perhaps he finally felt as though he at least had a starting point now.

Getting inside and seeing Rosetta and Katie still in the kitchen, he comes up behind Katie on his crutches, leaning his head over her shoulder to give her cheek a kiss. "Miss me?"

Mick grins and catches Rosetta's eye, giving her a little nod. It was a good night. Maybe there had been a bump along the way, but he felt it was a necessary one, and hoped that hitting it would not hinder, but rather help. His prayers for Hunter would continue. "Okay so... where's this mystery dessert I wasn't supposed to know about hmm?"

Quiet Conversation

Standing up again as Mick enters the room Katie gives a nod she was happy she didn't miss out and hadn't held them up to long from eating. She would of hated if they had been waiting for her and she hadn't been here right away.

"Alright let me go wash my hands quickly before I sit down."

Once her hands were washed and sitting down Hunter was on one side of her, and BJ was on the other. She was comfortable here at this table and for a moment Katie wondered how long ago she had not been. It was strange to think about that time now and how differently things had changed but she has happy they had. Missing out on family this this would really have sucked.

As the conversation changed and Hunter becomes a little more in depth in the questions she just listens. She new Hunter new very little about something but she also new Mick would not be upset by his questions not anymore anyways. They were innocent questions and held nothing to them other than wonder. So while they talked Katie quietly talked with BJ about dinner.

"Since when did you start eating more huh?"

   "Since I started growing again...duh."

Giving a laugh Katie ruffles the boys hair again before sitting up once more. Looking to Hunter and seeing the look on his face Katie gives a soft smile and a little nod that it was ok. Reaching under the table and taking his hand in her own Katie gives it a little squeeze reassuring Hunter it would be ok and he'd dont nothing wrong.

Hearing Mick's question BJ stops looking at Katie and looks twords Mick instead giving a big smile. He liked talking about school, in fact he liked school all together. Learning new stuff was fun, and trying to understand the stuff he had a hard time with was even better.

"It was good. We learned about fractions today and also talked about Albert...Ein...Einshin...Einstern...."

Giving a huff BJ stops talking for a second to think about what he was saying. Looking over the table at Rosetta she smiled at him and gave a little nod. She new he was having a problem with the last name but she also new giving a little time he could figure it out too. Patents is what it took with BJ sometimes a little extra.

"Albert Einstein....yeah thats him. We talked about him and all the great stuff he did. It was pretty cool."

Leaning over to Hunter Katie gives another smile before placing a small kiss on his cheek while everyone was focusing on BJ at the moment.

"You're completely find so you don't have to feel to bad."

Abuse

Hunter returns Katie's kiss and chuckles, about to tell yer yes, they'd eaten everything, but he didn't get the chance. Watching BJ come racing down the hall, he grins. There he went again... one minute he was mature, and the next, Hunter would guess he was just a five-year-old. He wondered if he'd ever know just exactly what it was about the boy that caused that, but he probably wouldn't ever have the guts to ask.

Smiling back at Katie, he gives her a wink. He knew she was going to call her boss today, and he really wanted to know what he's said, but... now was not the time. "We did think for a while there, we'd have to eat everything, but lucky for you, it's not ready yet."

"Wasn't ready," Mick corrects as he walks in with the salad, setting it on the table. "Now it is." Giving Katie a smile, he nods to her. "Grab a seat, Rosetta's bringing the lasagna."

It wasn't long before the family was all seated around the table. After Mick gave the prayer, food was passed and there were many murmurs of pleasure as Rosetta's lasagna was tasted. Even Hunter had to admit it had been a long time since he'd had any this good - if ever.

Feeling quite comfortable sitting next to Katie, Hunter joins in the conversations, thoroughly enjoying himself...

"So how's the knee feeling?" Mick asks Hunter in between bites.

Hunter wipes his mouth with his napkin and shrugs. "It's still connected to my leg. Nothing a good shot of bourbon wouldn't fix." The words had slipped out before he'd thought, and he smirks at himself for saying it. "But... I have come to the conclusion you run a dry camp around here."

Mick gains a quiet sort of smile. "We do."

Hunter hadn't dared to voice his question since being here, but he really was curious, and this seemed an okay atmosphere in which to ask. "So... why? I mean... just 'cause of visitors and stuff, or does everyone here hate the idea of having a bottle of beer in the fridge?"

Mick took no offense, knowing that Hunter might not realize the implications of that remark. He shakes his head slowly. "No, actually, a few people here enjoy a good beer every once in a while, or a glass of wine. But it's usually kept to dinner in town." Pausing, he studies Hunter's face. There were others here at the table, including BJ. But Mick had long since become comfortable with the topic, no matter who was present. "The reason we run a dry camp is because of me."

Hunter nibbles on his garlic bread, still not quite understanding. He wasn't trying to start anything - he was just confused. "You think alcohol is the devil's brew, huh?"

"Nope." Mick shakes his head again. "It's the people who abuse it that turn it into something bad - it's not bad in itself, just like anything." Letting another pause linger, he takes a sip of his water, sensing Hunter's curiosity but allowing the quiet for just a few moments. "There is no alcohol on this ranch because I've had problems with alcohol abuse."

Hunter blinks. It wasn't that he didn't believe it, he just never would have guessed it. "Seriously?"

Mick chuckles at Hunter's innocent surprise, even though the subject was quite serious. "Unfortunately, yes. I used to be a heavy drinker." His eyes briefly drift to Rosetta as he still feels the pangs of sorrow deep down. "I did a lot of things I'm not proud of while under the influence of alcohol. Getting drunk was my way to escape my problems."

By now, Hunter had shrunken back just a little in his chair. "But... you quit?"

"I did. After I sought help."

"Help? As in..."

"As in professional help." Mick was not fond of those memories. It had taken two separate stays at the McClain ranch to break his habit, and the second had been intertwined with Dylan's own drug use problems. "I left here and stayed at a place where they help people who struggle with drug and alcohol addiction through counseling and such. Took me twice and almost losing my family to get through it, but I eventually did."

Hunter now felt slightly embarrassed for bringing the subject up at all, although he didn't think badly of Mick. On the contrary, he probably respected him even more now. One, for actually being able to quit drinking. And two, for having guts enough to talk about it. Realizing his original comments though, Hunter bites his lip. "I'm sorry... if I would have known, I-"

"You're fine," Mick assures him. "I'm not offended if you're not."

"Well of course not."

"Good." Mick's smile returns as he picks up his fork to resume eating.

Hunter is alone with his thoughts for a moment before taking a bite of his bread. Glancing at Katie, his eyes bore a look of apology, and showed her his embarrassment, though slight. He wished he would have known about Mick's history... it would have explained a lot and left no need for his questions. Hopefully the conversation would move on.

Sensing the younger man's regret for bringing up the topic, Mick graciously starts another. "So BJ, how'd school go today?"

Giving a big smile to Hunter there was a sense of pride there for BJ that he liked his truck. It was only a toy but to the small boy it meant everything. Picking up the truck again as Hunter rolls it back to him BJ looks down a few more minutes at it playing with the one lose door.

   "Thanks!"

Looking up again with a big toothy smile BJ slips off the chair and hold the truck tight looking at Hunter again and than turning running down the hall letting his feet scuff on the floor aiming for his room disappearing inside.

"Great, I'll see you Monday than. Thanks again Reese."

Hanging up the phone Katie lets out a small sigh and sinks down on her bed. She was happy about going back to work she missed work but there were so many other things that made her a little nervous about it too. One thing was seeing Jason again and wondering if it would be awkward.

Standing Katie new that Hunter, would be waiting for her over at Rosetta and Mick's so she better clean up. She could think though everything else later. Now was the time to enjoy the last few days with her family before she left and it was never a dull moment.

...Finished with her shower and her hair tied nicely back in a braid Katie was about to know on the door but stops rethinking it. Her Aunt surly would give her a little thump on the head if she didn't want right in when they had been expecting her.

Giving a small laugh to herself Katie opens the door and steps in. Being hit with the aroma of food she can feel she stomach growl. Taking off her shoes she steps in a little farther seeing Hunter sitting at the table.

"Hey guys I'm here sorry I am late."

Coming up behind Hunter Katie wraps both her arms around him before coming to the front and giving him a small kiss on the lips.

"Mmmm...you guys didn't eat everything did you?"

   "KATIEEEEEEEEE....."

The voice shreaks from down the hall and all that can be seen is a blur before something hits her leg with great force. Looking down at BJ Katie can't help but smile and shake her head a little bit as he clings to her leg.

Letting go of Hunter Katie brings her free hand down and ruffles his hair before squaring down to his level and giving his nose a little tap with her finger.

"Hey there Bud, you didn't miss me did ya?"

BJ gives a strong nod of his head before looking back at Katie his eyes sparkling. For a child he had great deepth like his young eyes had seen much, and lost even more even if he didn't fully understand it. His eyes held innocents, and no concept of time, one minutes could feel like days and yet his eyes still had intelligence beyond his years, maybe even more than Katie would ever know.

"Yes I did. I always miss you."

"Ah, well I am here now so you don't have to ok?"

Looking back to Hunter Katie smiles at him. She really was happy he he to share this time with her and be with her family. She new Hunter wasn't close to his so being able to share this with him was a special thing.

Pretty cool

Though having no idea who Sham was or why she were gone, Hunter holds his smile. He knew Mick and Rosetta had adopted the boy - perhaps this other person was someone before them.

Given the offer to see the truck, Hunter nods. "Of course - how could I not want to check out a beauty like this, eh?"

Leaning a little closer to BJ he reaches out to finger the truck, rolling it a little and giving it a good once-over. "Mmm... I can see why this is your favorite. I used to have a truck kinda like this one. 'Cept mine was green. I used to play with it all the time."

Studying BJ's toy, Hunter's mind wanders back to a time when his father had told him that bringing that truck along on their vacation was a foolish little boy's thing to do. So he'd left it home and learned to do without. He'd been six. And he still remembered.

Rolling the truck back nearer to BJ, Hunter returns it. He knew Katie would be coming soon and so would supper. And he doubted Mick would allow the truck to remain on the table. "Pretty cool, man."

Reese was relieved that Katie agreed to Monday. He really didn't want to try to find other help. It wasn't that he had a problem with setting boundaries... it was just that several agents were kind of like his kids and he cared for them outside of work.

"Great. I'll be sure we've got stuff ready for you on Monday then."

Her thanks brings a small smile to his lips. "You're welcome. I'm glad your time away has been good. Anxious to see you though."

Seeing a button on his phone blinking, he sighs. "Got another call, Katie. I'll see you soon." Hanging up, he picks up the other line.

Gone

Continuing to just look at Hunter's let and than back up at Hunter BJ squints his eyes a little bit before giving a big nod. He new when people got hurt or sick they went to Angel and she always made them better. If anyone was to get hurt it was Angel BJ new to go to first and her fixing Hunter's leg just confirmed it more for him.

"Angel is very good with fixing people. She makes everyone better."

Looking down at his truck again as it was mentioned one might be able to tell it was older. Perhaps played with a lot too. Peaces where glued back together, the pain was coming off, on of the doors was being held on with a twist tie, but there was a sense of great car to the truck as well. Giving a nod of his head BJ looking up at Hunter again.

"Mmmmhmm....Sham gave it to me long time ago. She use to take care of me...but now she is gone. This is the only thing I have left of her."

Drawing quiet BJ goes over to his chair still holding the truck and pulls out the chair before climbing up on it and slidding the chair in a little bit the best he could. Putting the truck up on the table he pushes it twords Hunter a little bit.

   "Want to see it?"

Listing to Reese Katie paces the bunk house back and forth just taking in what Reese said. She couldn't help a slight feeling of guilt for leaving but it was something she had needed. If she had stayed who new what would of happened and she might have even got herself fired. It was because Reese gave her the time off she asked for that Katie would not mind coming back a little early.

"Yeah Monday sounds great to me. I can definitely swing that."

Katie really was thankful for everything Reese had done for her. Even if some people might think its not fair or that personal life was getting into the way with work Katie thought her whole emotional situation was a little different than people would think and Reese understanding that really did help everything.

"Reese, thanks a lot for everything. It's really been a good eye opening time away."

Monday

Mick grins and returns Rosetta's kiss, giving her shoulders a light rub. "Oh okay, I'll toss the salad and leave you alone." Heading to the fridge, he finds what he needs to start helping her with the rest of supper.

Hunter grins and cocks his head, mimicking BJ. He'd figured out since coming here that the boy was extremely intelligent in some areas, while in other ways, he seemed to act younger than his eight-year age. He hadn't been able to figure it out, but hadn't asked anyone either. He didn't think the boy was slow, but something was different. "Oh, I had a little accident," he explains. "Hurt my knee, but Angel helped me so I'm gonna be okay."

Eying the toy truck, he quirks an eyebrow. "Now that is a cool truck. Is it one of your favorites?"

"Well hi, Katie." Reese was rather relieved she had called him so he wouldn't have to call her. He knew that she had been going through a pretty tough time and he hadn't wanted to put pressure on her. His recent conversation with Wyatt though, had caused him to think thinks through, perhaps more than he had before.

Hearing what she had to say, he leans back in his chair, running a tired hand over his face. "I'm glad you called. We're, um... well, things are a little tight around here at the moment. I've held off just about as long as I can without... hiring anybody else." He didn't want Katie to think he wanted to replace her, but the truth of the matter was that the Elite was running out of options.

"I'm not going to order you back by a certain date." Some of Wyatt's words run through Reese's mind. "Under the unique circumstances, I wouldn't feel right doing that." He really did genuinely care for Katie and what she was dealing with, and he didn't want to hinder her feeling better. "If, um.... if you need longer than a week, I understand. But we sure could use you soon. If you came back by Monday, I wouldn't have to find temporary help." That was just a few more days away - less than a week. Reese wasn't sure if Katie would agree to it or not, but it was the best he could do.

Chatting

Katie laughs again and gives a nod. She'd be texting Hunter till they saw each other again for sure. She was going to miss him to much not to after seeing him every day and spending endless hours with him at the ranch. He was right though it wouldn't be long so maybe it would go quickly.

...The rest of the day was good and Katie enjoyed her time with Hunter like always. As time moved though she new there were a few things she had to do and calling Reese as one. Giving Hunter a small kiss before leaving him Katie heads back to her bunk.

Dialing Reese Katie waits till he finally answers the phone. Hearing his voice Katie gives a smile. It had been a while and honestly she had missed working and she missed her boss. He was always so kind to her and helped everyone out, how could anyone not like having Reese as a boss.

   "Hey Reese it's Katie."

She pauses for a second. In a way it was kind of strange calling and seeing if it was ok to come back to work. This was much different than just coming back from vacation for all she new her spot was filled and she could be on the low end of the totem pole all over again.

"I was just calling about coming back to work. I'm doing a bit better and was hoping to return within a week, as long as thats ok with you. If you need me to come back sooner I can as well."

Investigating who was at the door BJ peeks down the hall. Not many people came to visit at the house though he was use to people coming and going, he still liked to know who was in the house at all times. Realizing Hunter had spotted him BJ backs up a little before turning in a circle to try and get away. Realizing there was no where to go he gives a little huff before smiling and acting completely cool.

   "Whas  up Hunter?"

Coming over to him BJ looks at Hunter's leg and cocks his head a little bit before looking at Hunter. Holding his truck BJ fiddles with the one part of it absentmindedly as he just continued to look at Hunter's leg and than back up at him again.

   "What hoppened to your leg?"

As Mick comes up behind her Rosetta can't help but smile. She was just buttering the garlic bread and about to pop it in the oven to warm while the lesgana was in there too. Feeling the poke to the ribs she can't help but jump a little before looking over her shoulder at Mick.

"If you stop tickling me it would be done a lot faster you know."

Rosetta gives a smile before leaning in to give Mick a kiss on the lips. It was moments like this that was perfect. There family might be different but it was there family and she loved every moment of it. God had given her what she had always wanted but thought she would never get and she was so very thankful for that.

"Dinner should be ready in about fifteen minutes. Could you grab the salad and veggies from the fridge and toss the salad for me?"
