Behave

Hunter really had no idea if Katie's theory was right or not. Was it really linked to his past? Was it really linked to things he'd left unfinished, ignoring them until they forced their way in and tried to drag him down? Or was he drowning his own self by not dealing with those same things? Or was this stupid nightmare not really telling him anything at all and it was just his imagination gone wild? It mattered little... the bottom line was that he couldn't sleep and this whole thing was really feeling scary.

Moving his fingers to intertwine with Katie, he finds her offer sweet... and appealing. "Maybe you can break another spell," he responds softly. It was worth a try. Maybe if he could just relax, he could get some good sleep without the disturbing vision.

Standing up, he pulls Katie with him without saying anything, guiding her inside the bunkhouse with him. Heading for the bed, he flops down on his side. Looking up at Katie, he pats the empty spot in front of him. "Be my security blanket?" He grins, trying to bring humor into this whole thing. "I promise to behave."

Getting settled in the car, the scent seems to be familiar. Jared didn't remember anything about it, but his senses did seem to know this vehicle. His eyes look around the dashboard, the visors and the floor as if searching for clues.

"Huh? Oh..." He shrugs at Grace's question. "How should I know where to go? I don't even know the options, let alone how to get there." He smirks and points down the street. "That way... or the other way, if you prefer. You're driving, not me."

Leaning forward, he pops the glovebox and takes out the contents. Registration... insurance information... some napkins... a couple pens... a notepad. Interesting. He flips it open to find a short list of phone numbers in his handwriting. He wondered who the numbers belonged to. Maybe it was connected to his job. Finding a road map, he sees that it's been folded so that the state of Nevada is showing. That must have been from when he came here in the first place. Several other cities were circled though - had he been planning to go somewhere else? Or had he already? Or...? Oh look, a stick of gum. It looked ancient. And... a business card? Wait... a woman's name and... His neck grows hot as he stuffs the card back under several other items. Surely not. He'd never... would he?

Stuffing the contents back into the glovebox, he sighs. Turning, he peers into one of the cup holders in the console. Loose change. Quite a bit, actually. At least he'd been a saver, right? That was good. Looking up at the visor, he flips it down to find a selection of CDs. His fingers glide over the titles as recognition tries to flicker. He could almost hear the music... rock?

Now completely lost in thought, he almost forgets about Grace entirely or where they were headed. Reaching for the radio, he turns it on. A CD was already in. And the volume way up. Cringing, he turns it down as the heavy rock music blares. Apparently he liked things loud. Really? He retrieves one of the CDs from the visor, not liking the artwork. Looked like some metal band. He wasn't so sure he wanted to try listening to it with Grace in the vehicle - he had a hunch it wasn't going to be full of pleasant lyrics.

Flipping the visor back up, he then shuts the radio off again and sighs. His eyes catch sight of an air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror. It was the shape of a star and still smelled a little like vanilla. Breathing deeply, he suddenly sees the inside of a gas station. There was a rack full of different air fresheners. He'd wanted pine but they were all out. So he'd opted for vanilla instead. Turning, there was a woman who smiled sweetly. She didn't have a nametag though. She didn't work there. She liked vanilla too. And she reached for it. No, she reached for his hand, pulling him to the counter. Her smile was more than friendly. It was seductive. He liked it and-

Giving a lurch, Jared is suddenly back in the present, his eyes focusing on the road ahead as his heart raced. That was the second memory he had with a woman. But it wasn't the same woman. A reoccurring thought enters his mind but he shoves it back out again. No... no... he wasn't that kind of man. He was sure of it. He couldn't have been.

Turning his head to look out the window, he hides his face from Grace. He wanted to tell her he'd just remembered something, but for some reason, unknown to him, he was afraid to.

"Mmhmm." Justin takes another bite of his bagel, chewing it slowly. "I gotta go into North Springs and meet with that young girl again." Things weren't going all that well and he was desperate for a breakthrough.

"After that... gotta do some shopping for Ma and... that's about it. Other than come back here and call a couple people about their computer woes."

Time to

"Or maybe...there is something wrong with your heart."

Katie reaches out her hand and lays it on Hunters. Her own fingers just gently running over him in a comforting matter. She felt bad for Hunter and couldn't imagine what he was feeling. But nightmares no matter who had them or what there were about were never fun and Katie new that first hand with Jason and living it with him.

"Maybe your dream is trying to tell you its time to forgive people in your past and move on before its to late and the whirlpool of emotions cause you to sink with no way of getting back out."

Sinking could of meant in liqueur, anger, wreaking the heart, or simply being unhappy for the rest of his life. Katie didn't know what we was trying to pin point or maybe she was pin pointing them all. But she need know that seeing the tired look in Hunter's eye he was wearing thin.

Sometimes Katie wondered why it was easier for her to give advice than take it. But somewhere alone the line Katie did know that she would have to take her own advice and ask for forgiveness from a few people she new too. but that would be saved for another day.

"Why don't you go try and lay down and get some more sleep. We all get days off once a while. I'll even sit with you if you like. And no...I don't mind or I wouldn't have said it."

Giving a smile of her own as Jared gets his self turned around and is ready to go. Coming up behind him Grace starts to push forward. Going a little slow this time and just enjoying the day. Life was to short to always rush and Grace would always stand behind than.

Getting back to the house and grabbing the keys Grace helps Jared into the passager seat of the car. Going around to the drive side and getting in Grace takes in a deep breath. It stills smelled like a new car and she only could of guessed Jared took good care of it.

"Alright, lets fire this puppy up and see what she's got."

Turning the key and hearing the car growl Grace looks to Jared and gives a smile. She couldn't help the little bit of excitement she felt too. Almost like a little kid on Christmas. It sounded so nice and backing up it felt just as good.

"Where to first my good sir?"

Hearing all the different fruit to choose from Beth can feel her stomach growl more than she had first expected. Going over and taking a look she goes for the strawberrys and pulls them out. Getting a bowl and putting some in it she returns the container before going to the table and sitting down.

"Yeah I work till 12 tonight when the other bar tender comes in. I go in at six so its a short day for me. Not that a mind today."

Taking a bit of one of the strawberry's Beth gives a smile. It was tart followed by a nice sweetness. She always liked strawberrys and how the tart and sweetness went together. It almost reminded her of life a little bit too. How two things could go together when they were so different.

"Do you have anyone to see today?"

Every Night

Hunter wasn't surprised when Katie sat down. She could read him all too well and he knew it. How she did it, he'd never know, but she was good at it. He'd never be able to lie to her - she'd see right through him.

Her question lingers on the air for several moments. Though falling quiet again, Hunter searches her eyes. He'd figured that she had observed him being tired the last handful of mornings. There were a whole lot of reasons he could give her. But as he'd just concluded... she'd be able to tell they were just excuses.

Taking a deep breath, he lets it out slowly before leaning his head back against the railing and closing his eyes. "I've been having nightmares," he finally admits. Keeping his eyes closed while telling her was easier. He felt like a little kid afraid of the boogie man.

"Well... one, actually. Every night... for about a week... and... I can't ever sleep any more afterward. Or if I try to, I just have the nightmare all over again."

Even now, he was having trouble fending off the frightening images of water and darkness. Opening his eyes again, his gaze was so tired. So weary. He looks back to Katie. "Don't know why, 'cause I didn't think anything was bothering me. I mean I've been having a great time here - not like I'm under a lot of stress or something." He shrugs lamely. "I just can't seem to shake it. Even if I try to take a nap during the day, the dream comes back." He wasn't sure if he wanted to describe it to her or not. He felt rather silly about it - it wasn't even anything really tangible. Drowning in a river. Really? Stupid.

Sighing again, he finally unfolds his arms, bringing one knee up to his chest. "Brain keeps wandering to the past too, but I don't even know if it's connected or why. None of it makes any sense, other than the obvious - and that's I'm not getting enough sleep." He rolls his eyes. "Maybe there's just something wrong with my head."

Jared's lips upturn into a new smile and he shakes his head. He wasn't sure if Grace really knew the answer or not, but he'd let the matter drop.

"Okay... yeah, lets go for a ride. I wanna see if that car's a smooth a ride as it looks." He gets his wheelchair backed away from the table and turned around, ready to go.

"I think my mom's got the keys hanging on the wall in the hallway."

"Fruit, I've got." Justin abandons his bagel for now, going to the fridge. "Let's see.... grapes... strawberries... watermelon... apples... oranges..." Fruit and veggies he always had on hand. "Um... got some pineapple too that's already been cut, and... ah. Peaches. Yeah." He pops back out of the fridge and opens the door wider. "Here - help yourself to whatever you want." That would probably be easier.

Moving aside, he lets Beth take a look at what she wanted. "You gotta work tonight?"

Ride now

Looking back at Jared and his comment Grace just searches his face for a few long moments. What made him different? She really wasn't sure herself but she as sure it was something. It was a feeling she got, like she was meant to be here, she was meant to be more than just a  therapist to him. She could feel the tug, and she new it was God's doing. How was she to explain that though when there really was no solid explanation.

"When I figure it out myself, you will be the first to know."

Giving a crooked smile to Jared and a wink Grace stands gathering the empty bowls and than walking them over to the garbage. Coming back over and looking down at Jared she smile was just a little bit bigger. Maybe his question sparked a little more thought than she'd expected but she was being honest with him.

"How about we go for that ride now?"

Taking a sip of the coffee it felt good going down. She didn't often drink coffee but when she did it always tasted good to her. Hearing Justin's comment about cooking something Beth thinks for a second if she was hungry or not. She didn't feel like she was this morning but maybe she should eat anyways.

"Do you have any fruit? I'm not really that hungry just something light would be nice."

Just letting the silence linger for a long few moments Katie waits for Hunter to say more. She new everything was not alright even if Hunter pasted a smile on his face she would still know but she hated seeming noise too so she didn't want to put in where she didn't belong.

Finally as he spoke Katie gives a small nod before sitting down on the bottom step and looking up at Hunter. She felt bad he'd been having a hard time sleeping and she hoped it wasn't due to the hard time her family was giving him since they were only joking around. Something told her though that was not it. It ran deeper, longer, and sure a lot more.

"Want to talk about it? I've noticed the last few nights its been the same in the morning. Maybe if you talk to someone it will make you feel better?"

Barriers

Jared sits back again, seeing that his compliments had gone to the wind. Oh, well.

Grace's talk of friendship lowers his eyes for a few moments. He really wasn't sure what to think. Why him? She must have a ton of other patients, and surely there were lines she drew, and rightly so, between friends and clients. He did realize now that what she was doing for him really was different than others. But... why? And how could a friendship continue after this anyway?

Gaining back a new little smirk, he looks up at her again. A flirtatious glint had returned to his eyes. "So... how am I different than your other patients anyway?" He really didn't expect an answer... he just wanted to see if he could get her to blush again. "What makes me so special?"

Justin chuckles at Beth's description of smelling burnt toast. He knew he had crumbs in the toaster that needed to be cleaned out. He just... hadn't yet.

Leaning back against the counter and taking a bite of his bagel, he studies Beth. He was glad she felt a little better this morning. She looked like perhaps her night hadn't been all that restful, but if he were in her shoes, he'd probably be the same way.

"Want anything to eat? I'd be happy to make something for ya."

Hunter's mind continued to wander where he didn't want it to, no matter how hard he tried. Open eyes, closed eyes, it didn't matter. As long as it wasn't sleep though, he was okay. As long as he could keep himself from having that nightmare again.

Staying on the porch, he lost track of time as he takes in the changing colors of the sky. He'd never really paid that close attention to a sunrise before and hadn't realized all the colors that appeared before the sun even did. There were a lot of things he didn't pay close attention to anymore... things like his feelings... his memories... things he didn't want to deal with. Things he had moved on from and forgotten for years, thinking they were gone forever, only to discover now that they were still there, clawing at his heart. He just didn't understand why, or why now. It didn't seem fair, when he was having such a good time otherwise. Why couldn't he just have a nice relaxing vacation away from Nevada?

Katie's presence startles him slightly, but he doesn't move, his legs still stretched out across the top step of the porch. "Hey..."

He offers a wry grin at her comment and question. "Yeah, I'm okay." That was just a standard answer though, void of any feeling of truth. His eyes subconsciously drift to the ground, proving that no, he really wasn't okay. Keeping his arms folded on his chest, he doesn't even realize that his body language spoke of barriers - walls that he had spent years building.

Studying a fly that had landed on the bottom step, he continues to battle with his mind. He needed to get up, get going, start finding something to do. But his body was just too exhausted to move yet.

Only after realizing that a long stretch of silence had gone by does Hunter remember Katie's still standing there and his eyes finally rise. He doesn't smile though. Not this time. "I didn't sleep very well," he admits. "Trying to wake up without coffee isn't easy."

Not so good

"I'm hanging in there. Think I'm better today than I was last night, at least I don't feel like my nerves are shot now."

Feeling Justin's hand on her skin Beth gives a small smile. Though his hands where rough his touch was soft and there was a caring gesture that just added to it. She liked it and didn't mind when Justin touched her at all.

"The bagel is more than likely the reason it smells like burnt toast. I think its the coffee thats smelling good and calling my name."

Heading over to the counter Beth stops for a second trying to remember where Justin's cups where. Opening the first one and seeing no cups Beth moves to the second one. Reaching in and grabbing one she sets it down. Pouring the coffee into it she takes in a deep breath enjoying this fresh sent. It was definitely the coffee she had smelled.

  "Yep thats what I smelled."

"Who said your going to be friendless?"

Grace cocks her head looking at Jared. She was hoping the conversation could move off of her and onto something thing else. Though his comment went noted and it did make her feel good. This just happened to be a good opening for doing so. Studying his face Grace lets out a small almost unnoticeable sigh.  Jared really though she wasn't going to stay his friend after this?

"I told you even when you walk again I am still going to be your friend. I don't take all my patents, out for ice cream, and drive the car for them. Thats only what I do with my friends."

Setting her spoon down in the ice cream bowl that was now empty Grace was stuffed. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had this much ice cream but she sure had enjoyed it. Just getting to taste all the different flavors was a real treat one many might frown on but to Grace seeing Jared enjoy it was worth it.

"Phew I think I had to much but man oh man was it good."

Up a little earlier than normal Stacy stops as she see movement at one of the bunks. Just standing in the shadows she is very still. Finally seeing the figure in the moonlight though as they sat down on the pouch she relaxes a little bit. It was only Hunter. He must have woke early, or never gone to bed yet. Either way she wasn't needed and all was well, now she could continue on.

Heading to the mess hall it was the normal place to go first thing in the morning. Everyone did because they new coffee would be waiting. It was like clock work almost...whoever was up first at five would make the coffee and the rest would come, once the pot was empty the next person would make more. It never failed to be there waiting for them.

Passing Hunter's bunk Katie stops and takes a few steps backwards. Looking at Hunter she gives a smile before wondering a little close. Though once getting there she eyes search his face and she gives a little worry.

"Hey there. I'd say good morning but something tells me its not so good. You ok?"

Time

A knock at the door startles Jeff from his nap. He'd slept late then had found himself back in bed for the afternoon. He'd been told it would be natural to be tired for a while, but it was still a bit discouraging.

"Just a minute," he mumbles. Dragging himself from bed, he rubs his eyes and yawns before finally getting to his feet. Opening the door, he can't help his surprise at seeing Cindy, and isn't even sure what to say.

Seeing Jeff in his socks and his hair a bit disheveled, Cindy can immediately see that he'd been sleeping. "Oh, I'm sorry... I woke you, didn't I?"

"Um... yeah, but that's okay." Jeff cocks his head. The last time they'd parted, it had been awkward to say the least. He'd figured Cindy wouldn't want anything to do with him after that. "Can I... help you?"

"Yes. I mean, well, no." Cindy holds up a small plate of cookies. "I made a batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and ended up with too many. I know they're one of your favorites so... I thought you might like these."

Jeff raises an eyebrow, but he accepts the plate, his mouth already watering. "You thought right. Thanks."

"You're welcome." Cindy clasps her hands, shifting her weight a bit awkwardly. "Um, I guess I just wanted to say sorry, too. You know... for before... and what I said."

Jeff gives her a half a smile. "Naw... you were right."

"Maybe. But I didn't need to say it like I did. I didn't want to hurt your feelings."

She had. But Jeff had concluded it had been deserved. "It's okay. I didn't mean to offend you. I suppose a guy like me is just bound to make those blunders sometimes."

Cindy's mouth forms a warm smile and she reaches out to put a hand on his arm. "You're very special, Jeff, and you have one of the biggest hearts I know. Don't ever think you have nothing to offer a woman... and not just a woman who's in need." She gives his arm a little squeeze. "Don't limit yourself because you think you're weak. It's your body that's weak, not your spirit. And if a woman judges you because of a physical weakness, then she's not the one for you anyway."

A lump rises in Jeff's throat. "Thanks, Cindy," he responds quietly. "We're okay then?"

Cindy chuckles. "Of course we are. You're my friend and I don't want that to change." Letting him go, she backs up, ready to leave. "I'll see you at supper."

"Okay." Watching her leave, Jeff holds the plate of cookies and tries to figure out the strange emotions churning within him. She was right - he'd thought a woman in need would be the only kind that would find him useful. But... maybe she was right about the other stuff too. She might not be interested in anything more than friendship with him... but maybe he did still have a chance with someone else... someone out there... someone he hadn't found yet.

Turning back inside, Jeff returns to his bed... but only after he'd eaten a cookie.

Keeping his arms slung over Katie's shoulders, Hunter grins. "Apples have my vote too. Sounds like fun."

Though his eyes were tired, he holds his smile, just meeting Katie's gaze for several long moments. Was it just him, or was she getting prettier every day? "Of course... just about anything with you would sound fun," he admits.

Leaning in a little closer, he wonders if perhaps she might allow him one more time a sweet kiss like they'd shared the day before. He'd promised himself he wouldn't push things too fast, and he'd wait for Katie's next move but... having her this close, just inches away with those bright eyes and that warm smile...

"Hey, you two going riding?"

Hunter backs up a step, letting his arms slide from Katie as he clears his throat. Looking over at Jim, he nods. "Yeah. That okay?"

"Oh sure." Jim nods. "I just wanted to tell you that I think that saddle Mick had you use yesterday got moved and it's sitting on the bench." He chuckles. "I didn't want you to spend all your time hunting for it."

Hunter chuckles. "Got it. Thanks." Alone with Katie again, he gives her a look that mixed slyness and sheepishness. "I'll, um... go get Bonzai."

...It was a fun ride, and though Hunter's legs did hurt, especially with Bonzai's rough gait, it really wasn't all that long before the pain subsided enough for him to settle in and enjoy the ride. They took it slow - of which he was thankful. He might have been put through his paces yesterday and could remember a lot about riding, but there was a lot he had yet to recall and even more to learn. He was quite content just taking a nice slow pace. And... it gave him better opportunity to talk with Katie too, chatting and laughing. They dismounted in the grove of apple trees to enjoy the fresh treat, walking together as they led the horses. There was a warm breeze, carrying the sweet scent of apples and... Hunter really couldn't imagine a much more peaceful place to be. Getting back to the ranch several hours earlier, it was perhaps later than planned, but Hunter wouldn't have traded it for the world...

...Time at the ranch stopped for no one, even if some wished it would. Every day the sun rose then set again, greeting each morning with warmth and bidding its farewell as the moon took over again...

"...Well yeah, he's been a great help." Eric sets one foot on a chair in the break room, taking a sip from his water bottle. He looks to Mick inquisitively. "Why?"

Mick shrugs, seated at the table with his own water. Several days had passed, and after a morning of fencing, both were due a short rest. "Just asking, I guess."

"Hasn't he helped you?"

"Oh yeah, tons." That was the truth. Hunter had helped out more these past handful of days than most of the hired help. He'd worked with Katie almost every day, he'd assisted almost all the guys in some way or another, and he'd certainly lent a hand to Mick whenever needed. Just yesterday they'd been out baling hay for several hours and had gotten the job done, thanks to Hunter's stamina - the young man hadn't even complained about his sunburn.

Eric quirks an eyebrow. "Then why the hesitance?"

Mick shrugs. "I dunno. I mean I think it's great he's so willing to help out, but I've hardly seen him relax at all. He's just constantly working."

"Now that I've noticed," Eric agrees. "At first I thought he was just still trying to prove he wasn't a city slicker, but the last few days, it's like he's just... driven. Yesterday I thought he looked exhausted but he just shrugged it off and pitched in to help some more. 'Course I didn't argue."

"Mmhmm..."

"You think something's wrong?"

"Naw." Mick takes a swig of his water. "Just remembering, that's all."

Eric smiles a little and gives an understanding nod. "Keeping busy is the best way to forget."

"Or try to."

"At least he's sticking around. If something's bothering him, he could just as easily take off and forget about it."

"Yeah. " Mick nods in thought. "I think there's several things keeping him here."

"Like what?"

"Well I do think he enjoys being around the horses."

Eric chuckles. "I still can't believe he's still riding Bonzai. He said yesterday it doesn't bother him anymore."

Mick sips his water, laughing as well. "Maybe Bonzai finally found the right rider for him. Hunter does seem to have a knack. He's not the greatest rider in the world, but he seems to have picked up quickly on things. I wouldn't want to put him on a green horse but I'd trust him to exercise most of the reliables."

"Oh yeah, definitely. Give him a few more weeks and I bet he'd handle the green ones too." Eric cocks his head. "So it's just the horses he's interested in?"

"Naw, I think there's more. I think he likes the hard work - whether he's using it to run away from something or not. He made the comment to me the other day that he missed doing physical work." Mick shrugs. "And... there's a certain young lady that I think's got a hold on him too."

Eric quirks an eyebrow. "Yeah, I've kinda got that impression myself."

Mick grins. "I suppose that's a good a reason as any to stick around. Doesn't sound like he's got that much back in Nevada, calling him back too quickly."

"Think he's okay? I mean, for Katie?"

"I think he's got a few issues, and I get the impression he's not right with God. But if he can sort through all that... I think he has a lot of potential to be a fine man." Mick shrugs. "I do like him and everybody else seems to have taken to him too."

"Including me," Eric admits. "He's a lot of fun."

"Mm-hmm." Mick finishes off his bottle of water and tosses it into the corner box of recyclables. "Well... shall we get back to work?"

"You bet." Eric straightens and finishes his water as well. "I'll meet you out on the fence."

"Where are you going?"

Eric gives him a sheepish grin. "A guy's gotta say to his girl once in a while or she might think he forgot about her."

Mick grins and rolls his eyes. "Last time I saw her, she was helping Ashlee with her homework on their porch."

Eric's cheeks flush and he pulls his hat down a little further before leaving the break room. "Okay, thanks."

"You're welcome..." Mick stands alone for a moment, smiling to himself. Eric rarely talked about Stacy, but it was common knowledge now that those two were a couple. And Mick was glad. His brother-in-law had really seemed to brighten up lately and he wasn't about to interfere with that.

Sighing, he heads out of the barn, aiming for the fence that was only half-done...

...People were busy. Fellowship was sweet. Work was hard. Accomplishments made the work worthwhile. The ranch did indeed seem to be a haven from the world...

Jay eventually said goodbye to go home - but only with a promise to return soon. Jeff continued to recover, though it was slower than he preferred. He did avoid going to the barn too much though, giving in to taking it easy once more and resting often. The others all continued each day as usual - some days busier than others. And Hunter - he remained as well, his time at the ranch passing by a week and continuing on...

...Water surges around Hunter, the pressure crushing down on him. It was dark. Black. Cold. Being jerked along by the river's current sent a terror racing through Hunter's veins. His lungs begged him for air. He tried to find the surface, but there was no light to guide him. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew he'd been here before. He knew all he needed to do was wake up. But it didn't remove the fear.

Kicking and clawing at the rushing water did nothing but exhaust his muscles to the point of pain. There was nothing he could do. There was no up or down. There was no end to this evil river. Fighting until he could fight no more, his lungs finally have their way, opening up to inhale not air, but water.

Crying out, Hunter's eyes fly open to stare into the dark bunkhouse. Shaking all over, he was drenched in sweat, his heart racing...

Again.

Moaning in frustration, Hunter puts his head in his hands, rocking slightly. Why? Why was this happening? He didn't understand. For a week solid, he had been plagued with the same nightmare. Each time it was the same. Each time it was a dark river and he woke up just short of drowning.

Rising from bed, Hunter goes to the bathroom. Taking off his sweaty clothes, he steps into the shower to let cool water run over him. What was happening to him? Why was he having nightmares? There was nothing bothering him. Nothing was going wrong. On the contrary, he'd never had such a good time. Being at the ranch was like sunshine for the soul. He'd gone riding with Katie almost every day, he'd helped with chores, he'd gotten to know the guys better... the only thing he hadn't done was go to church with everybody else a couple days ago - it had felt strange to be almost alone at the quiet ranch for those few hours, and he'd felt just a twinge of guilt for not joining Katie with the others, but he just hadn't felt ready to touch that one yet, and thankfully no one gave him a bad time.

As far as he and Katie went, things couldn't be better. There hadn't been any kiss since that first time - not that he hadn't tried. It just seemed every time, they were interrupted, so he'd stuck to holding hands, sitting together at meals and he'd quickly obtained the habit of a goodnight hug before parting every night - and maybe just a kiss on the cheek. She seemed content, so he felt confident he was going at the right pace... if there was ever to be more between them, which... maybe deep down he did hope for.

So why the nightmares? Why was he being plagued with such horrible images and feelings? Despite the days being so good, the nightmares had permeated his mind to the point that the only way to rid himself of those awful pictures was to keep himself busy. He'd attempted a nap a couple days ago, only to fall too close to yet another nightmare. Rest was coming harder and harder as he tried to fight his way out of whatever this was. At least in keeping busy he'd gotten over his saddle soreness and had been able to pitch in with the work, helping the guys.

Bracing himself on the shower wall, Hunter closes his eyes, hanging his head to feel the cold water hit his neck and back. All of a sudden, his father's face enters his mind. No! Hunter's eyes fly open and he straightens, splashing some more water on his face. That was another thing that had been bothering him. No matter how busy he kept himself during the day, he was not only plagued with images from his nightmare, but all of a sudden, the past had been creeping up on him. What had set that off, he had no idea. He had caught himself thinking about anything from his childhood to his father, to Kyle, to anything in between. It was ridiculous, and in all honesty, he felt like he was going crazy. He had to beat it. Whatever this was, it would go away, he was sure.

Finally shutting off the water, he dries himself off and wanders back into the other room to pull on some clean clothes. He wasn't dressing for bed again though - he donned his jeans and pulled on his cowboy boots - the ones he'd bought a few days ago in town. They already looked worn with all the work and riding he'd been doing, and he liked that.

Only now does he glance at the clock. Four-thirty. Like always. His nightmares worked like clockwork, and he'd been up at this hour for a whole week, losing more sleep than he'd care to think about. But it didn't matter. He wouldn't be able to get back to bed - or if he did, he'd just be scared out of his wits again. Even so, it was too early for chores and even too early for him to go get a cup of coffee. As it had been every  day.

Wandering outside in his bare feet, he eases down to sit sideways on the porch step and leans back against the railing. His tired gaze wanders to the gray sky, and he didn't realize the dark circles that had formed all this week were still evident below his eyes. He'd just... sit here until he saw someone else stir.

Seeing Grace blush, it takes Jared off guard. It felt strange to suddenly have the upper hand - she usually had a quick comeback for him, not a genuine response like that. Cocking his head, Jared just studies her for a moment, a softer smile forming on his lips. She was more than a therapist... she was a woman.

"Well I don't know why you only have a few friends." Lowering his head a little, he tries to see Grace's eyes, waiting until she looked up at him again. "I know I give you a hard time some days but... you're very good at what you do."

He gestures at the table full of all the empty bowls. "I may not remember much and I may not know much about your profession, but... I've got a feeling that if I woulda ended up with a different physical therapist, I wouldn't be sitting here now, and...I know I wouldn't be smiling near as much."

Finishing the last bit of his ice cream, he licks the spoon a final time. "To tell you the truth... I've been tempted not to try so hard some days, 'cause I know once I'm on my feet, I'll be friendless again and I guess that's kind of a depressing thought."

Hearing the shriek, Justin gives a start. Glancing into the living room though, he sees that Beth is just fine and Danitza was still there. Since she seemed okay, Justin leaves her be, returning to his bagel and letting Beth decide when she wanted to get up.

Joined in the kitchen just a few moments later, he smiles. "Well it must be the coffee you smell, unless you have a nose for a plain toasted bagel. I've got more if you want one or I've got eggs... there might be some bacon. Whatever you'd like. Oh, and there's some fruit juice, like always."

Stepping towards her, he reaches out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. She looked like she'd had a rough night, and he wished there was more he could do. "You doin' okay?"

Apples

Watching Hunter and laughing Katie makes a dash for her own bunk. She didn't know if she would beat Hunter or not but trying would be fun. It at least was a little challenge and get them to hurry at the same time. Not that Katie didn't want to enjoy the shower too but the excitement of going riding seemed to over power that.

The shower wasn't nearly as long as Katie normal took but she didn't mind. Leaving her bunk and making a dash for the barn she was surprised to find it relatively empty. Looking around again she thought for sure Hunter would of made it here before her, but seeing he wasn't Katie gives a small chuckle.

Staring forward Katie is stopped by the arms that goes around her. Hearing Hunter's voice she and feeling herself being pushed against his chest Katie can't help the small chills she felt. Not struggling to get free Katie just leans her head back on Hunter's chest for a moment before tilting her head back to see him and smiling.

"Rotten egg you are not. At least you don't smell like one anymore and neither do I soo...I guess I can go easy."

Finally moving a little so Katie could turn around and see Hunter her smile was bright and now that she was clean it seemed to be a little brighter without the dirt and grim to mask it. Searching Hunter's face something was different, maybe wrong but she wasn't sure what. Could it still just be a sign of Hunter being tired?

"So we have some options for snacks. Go to the mess hall and get some veggies, or on our route of riding we can stop by the apple trees and pick some of them. I personally and voting for the apples."

Getting a strange look for the lady behind the counter Grace didn't much care. She thought this was going to be fun and Jared was game for it so what anyone else thought really didn't matter. Finding a table and setting there stuff down it takes a few moments to carry the ice cream over but in no time they were settled and digging in.

Taking a lick of her spoon Grace chuckles her eyes giving a genuine sparkle that she was having fun. She liked Jared's company and she enjoyed watching him try new things and figure out what he liked to eat. It was fun and to her she was happy to be able to spend the time with Jared.

"I have to day no I've never had anyone say that before. Not that I am over flowing with friends to start with but the few I do have, have never said anything. Now you have though so...I thank you. I'm happy you like my ideas."

Looking down at her bowl Grace's cheeks turn a slight red color. Why she was blushing she wasn't sure but Jared's comment had made her feel really good and flattered. Just knowing he was really enjoying himself and didn't think this whole thing was silly.

Caught somewhere between awake and sleep Beth's breathing becomes a little more heavy. She'd tossed and turned all night but never woke up. Her body now was still from tension as if she had been trying to shut something out but awaking did not come.

Feeling something wet on her face Beth's eyes slowly open. Seeing the two eyes looking straight back at her Beth gives a jump and sits up quickly giving a small little Shrek. Looking around quickly she tries to remember where she was. This was not her house...this was not her bed.

Slowly everything comes back to her as she remembers she had spend the night as Justin's and this was his couch. Looking doing at Danitza Beth trys to give a small smile and puts her hand down for the dog to smell. Giving her a pat on the head and a little rub behind the ears she relaxes just a little.

"Hey Girl, sorry if I scared you, you just startled me too."

Swinning her feet around Beth stands and gives a stretch. Hearing someone in the kitchen Beth could guess it was Justin. Wondering into the kitchen she peeks around the corner before entering making sure it really was him.

   "Something sure does smell good."

Be Kind

Hunter had thoroughly enjoyed the morning working in the barn with Katie. It might seem strange to some - friends or not, cleaning stalls wasn't the most pleasant work in the world, especially on a day as warm as this one. But talking and laughing with Katie made the time fly, and Hunter didn't even feel as much of his soreness after a while. Getting razzed by some of her uncles was a given, but he was getting quicker at dishing it out right back at them, which only seemed to feed the growing banter battle.

Exiting the barn behind Katie, Hunter breathes deep the fresh air before chuckling. "Well, either way, apparently we have to clean up." He thumps Katie teasingly on the back of the head. She was right though - whether she could stand him or not, he could hardly stand himself. It was time for a shower.

"I vote we clean up, ride and take something to snack on." Aiming for the bunkhouses, he turns and walks backward for a moment. "Last one showered and back to the barn's a rotten egg."

A sprint for his bunk only added to the need for a shower, and Hunter finds himself enjoying the warm water. Left alone and relaxing though, only gives his mind the opportunity to wander, and as he closes his eyes under the water, he's taken back to his nightmare.

Opening his eyes quickly, he shakes his head and goes for his soap. That's how it had been all morning. If busy, he was fine. But his dream had been the kind that just wouldn't let go. Whenever there was a free moment, he found himself thinking about it again. Reliving it. Obviously the solution was to keep busy so he wouldn't have time to think on it. Tonight would be better.

It didn't take long for Hunter to be back at the barn - finding Katie there before him. Coming up behind her in the barn aisle, he slings his arms around her, pulling her back to his chest. "Be kind to the rotten egg."

Jared grins at the faster pace, finding amusement in Grace's reaction. It did feel awfully good to not just be outside but actually go somewhere. Grace was being so nice... and even if he did feel like a bother, it made him feel good too.

Laughing at her suggestion, he nods. "Okay. I'm game for trying a bunch of different flavors."

After ordering, they find one of the small tables, shaded by a large umbrella. Jared has a ball tasting all sorts of different kinds of ice cream, finding he did like the strawberry, but it was anything with chocolate and peanut butter that he really liked.

"Mm... okay so... I don't know if I was addicted to anything before but... I think I am now." He licks his spoon and gives Grace a silly grin. "Did anyone ever tell you that you have really good ideas?"

Moving about the kitchen, Justin does his best to be quiet, letting Beth sleep as long as she wanted. He'd already been up, showered and started a pot of coffee, but he didn't need to be anywhere until this afternoon.

Hearing the toaster pop, he takes out the two bagel halves and starts spreading some cream cheese. Looking to the side, he finds Zora staring up at him, licking her chops.

"Nu-uh," he chides quietly. "My breakfast, not yours."

In the living room, Danitza was still lying next to the couch, having not even gone outside when the opportunity was offered. Finally getting up, she sits and puts her head down on the cushion near Beth's hand, nuzzling it just a little bit.

Love

Giving a nod Katie stands making her way to the kitchen to play there dirty cups in the sink. Once finished with that she leads the way outside and to the barn. Moving quickly Katie points out the normal chores she does. Muck out some of the stalls, clean the tack room, make sure the garbage were taken out. After that she shows Hunter to the assignment paper than hung on the far wall with the jobs people signed up for, and marked off so nothing was down twice.

Working hard the time seems to slip by but working along side Hunter seemed to make it a little more fun. Talking, joking and laughing just made it that much better and Katie was thrilled she got to share it with someone else and her love for this ranch.

Finally finishing the last bit of work and signing her and Hunters name off on it Katie steps out of the barn with Hunter close behind. The suns was now up but there was still enough time to enjoy the rest of the day till nightly chores.

"Alright since thats down, should we clean up eat and than ride, or clean up ride that eat? We can also bring something with us to eat on the trail too."

Katie takes her gloves off and turns to Hunter giving a smile. She was excited to just be able to join in a ride with him. If they took something to eat that would be great, or if they eat before hand she would be good with that too. One thing she new for sure though was she needed to clean up.

Giving a laugh and starting again Grace keeps her hand on Jared's shoulder for a long moment before removing it. Moving a little bit faster down the side walks Grace couldn't help but laugh.

"Yes sir, moving again...faster this time."

Continuing to go fast Grace doesn't slow down till they are almost at the ice cream place. It was to much fun and the breeze felt nice from going a little faster than a walk with Jared.

Getting up to the ice cream window Grace looks at the the options they had. Giving a smile and waiting her turn she looks to Jared and cocks her head for a moment.

"How about we try kiddy dishes that a super small and only fifty cents each of all the chocolate kinds and the strawberry kind too. Might be fun to tell what one we want."

Letting out a small sigh as Garret gets up Victoria gives a nod. Garret might not be joining them for dinner tonight but he would be there and that meant she would feel safe and at least have someone to steal looks at every once in a while when someone else wasn't looking.

"I love you Garret, now and always no matter what."

Watching him walk away she gives a small wave. After the dinner tonight they would mean again. Only short amounts of time was what they had but it was better than nothing and Victoria would enjoy it while she could.

Standing and going the other way around she makes her way back to the main house. She had to report back into her grandfather before he wondered where she was. He had to have known by now she was back and would want a full report.

7/21/12

Rusty

Did Garret believe there was more to life than this? Than this prison of addiction to misery? He knew there had to be more out there. Otherwise, no one would choose to live.

Victoria's question would go unanswered though. Garret's fingers run through her damp hair as his eyes silently plead with her not to ask about life outside these walls, lest they go mad with the desire for the impossible - freedom.

Leaving his forehead resting against hers, his hand moves down so his thumb can run softly along her cheek. "I'll be at dinner, but not to eat. I'm on duty until shift change at midnight." That meant that he would be stationed near the door of the elegant dining room, not allowed to partake in the meal with the others. Victoria would be within reach but he would be forbidden to even make eye contact. And he would wait and watch and hope that there were no disturbances. Yes, he'd be at dinner. But someday... someday he'd be able to enjoy a meal with Victoria.

Finding his lips on hers once more, he leaves her with a tender kiss. It was time for him to go again. "I'll be here again at midnight," he whispers.

Justin's eyes flit open to find the living room dark. The television glowed but the movie had long since ended. Shifting just a little, he realizes Beth is still half on top of him and sleeping soundly. Though not wanting to disturb her, he thought better of the thought to just stay here. It would probably be better to let her have the couch to herself.

Moving slowly and as gently as possible, he slips out from under her, finding her pillow to put under her head. Spreading a blanket out over her, he bends down and kisses her cheek before brushing it softly with the back of his hand.

Exiting the living room, he sees both the dogs and points to the couch. "Keep and eye on her," he whispers.

Danitza follows his pointing and wanders over to the couch, turning several times before lying down at the end where Beth's head was. Zora follows suit, easing down next to her too. Justin smiles and makes his way to his own bed, leaving his door open, just in case.

Jared reaches back and swats at Grace's hand, but only before a bit of heat comes to his cheeks. Grace certainly didn't have a problem speaking her mind, let alone telling him off. Yet she had a talent for being nice about it at the same time. Sheepish for being put in his place yet again, his eyes drift to the sidewalk. Grace's hand on his shoulder though, brings his gaze back up and behind him once more.

A grin slips out and he shakes his head, rolling his eyes. "Okay, okay... it's your time and your choice. Got it. Now..." He gestures forward. "Keep pushing or we'll never get there. I wanna figure out what kind of ice cream I like." Truth be told, he kind of liked how her hand  felt, and he wanted to move on before he could think any more of it. It was one thing to tease her with flirting... it was another to feel a genuine attraction that he assumed would be forbidden.

"My mom likes strawberry... but I think I might like something with chocolate."

Hunter nods slowly, mulling over the idea. "Sure - I'd love to see some of the scenery, as long as you think I can handle it. I mean, I rode a while yesterday but I'm still awfully rusty."

That much was true. Even though he'd been pleased at how much he'd remembered the day before, he knew that he was far from a skilled horseman and he didn't want to get himself into a bad position. "Although Bonzai doesn't seem the type to run away with any riders." Hunter grins, still planning on riding the same horse, rough ride or not. It was the principle of the thing now, and he wasn't going to lose.

Downing the rest of his coffee, he nods with satisfaction. "Okay...  Chores." The last thing he wanted was to have enough time to dwell on that stupid nightmare that was still lodged in his mind. Keeping busy would be the best way to get rid of it. "You lead and I'll follow."

Tonight

As Garret comes around and sits down next to her Victoria leans into him a little bit. Her comfort, her shelter. Hearing he was feeling better she was happy. Victoria did not like seeing him so sick and it made her worry even if she never showed it as much as she wanted too.

Being pulled into the kiss Victoria's arms go around Garret as she accepts the kiss and returns it as well. Just letting her one hand run along his back these were the moments that Victoria loved the most. The moment when everything she'd even done was gone because Garret looked past it and loved her anyways as she did him.

Finally pulling away Victoria leans her for head against Garrets for a long moment with her eyes closed. Oh how she wished they could be like this all the time. To be able to let people know about there love, to not fear being found out.

"Do you think this is all there is to life? To walk in the shadows and never see the sun?"

Opening her eyes Victoria searches Garret's gaze. A gaze she could get lost in and not let it bother her one bit. His eyes where her freedom and through them she lived, strive and moved on. If this was all there was in life for them than she was happy to have Garret in her life. Without him...she would be far worse off.

"What are your plans for today? Will you be at the dinner tonight?"

Laying with Justin and watching the movie Beth's mind went from on this to the next to the next. It was hard to settle on one thing right now but she did her best. Finally as the movie credits roll Beth lifts her head a little bit to look at Justin. Seeing he was sound a sleep she gives a little smile before laying her head down again. She didn't want to wake him when he looked so at peace.

Just cuddling down into him and letting the tv on Beth just lays there. The rythem of Justin's breathing making her head go up and down, up and down.  It was very lulling the patten soft, and comforting. Before long Beth was sound asleep too.

Going inside to get Jared's shoes Beth gives a little wave to him mom before explaining to her they were going to go out for a little bit. She didn't want to worry the woman if she went to look for them and they were gone. She seemed like to much of a nice lady to do that too.

Finally returning and waiting till Jared was ready Grace starts forward. It was really a nice day out and she was with nice company at least to her she was. Hearing Jared's comment though Grace stops and gives a little flick to his ear. Not enough to hurt but enough to get his attachen.

"One of these days your gonna stop that or its gonna get old fast. This is my time not extra time and I spend my time how I want to and right now I am spending it with my friend getting ice cream and than after we are going to take a drive in your nice car. That hardly seems like a wast to me."

Resting a hand on Jared's shoulder Grace gives a small smile. She really did wish Jared believed her when she told him he was more of a friend than a pashent. It just had worked out that way and she did enjoy spending time with him. Now to make him believe it some how.

Giving a laugh Katie can't help but be entertained by her Uncle's reaction to Hunter wanting to ride again. Not often did he get surprised but Hunter seemed to be doing a great job of it. Just sitting back and letting them chat Katie continues to sip her coffee.

Once the chatter was over and Mick walks away Katie looks to Hunter giving a nod at his comment. Keeping her own voice low too she can't help the giggle that slips out. She couldn't help but feel a little excitement herself.

"Well after chores if you want we can take our first riding trip together. It might be fun and I can show you some of the trails."

So Help Me

Hunter gives Katie a smirk, but nods. So far, he was hurting more than yesterday, but hopefully once he got up and active it would wear off. He wasn't about to laze around all day - not after all those shenanigans with the guys yesterday. If he'd lost his title of city slicker, he wasn't going to gain it back

As he sips his coffee though, it's Katie's previous words that seem to stick in his mind. The ones about willpower and determination. Was she implying he needed all that in order to not want a drink? Hunter had never thought he needed alcohol, and the last few days he'd been just fine without any. But was the desire for his bourbon this morning a sign that perhaps he was more addicted to it than he'd thought?

"Ah, there he is!"

Hunter looks up quickly at Mick's enthusiastic entrance to the dining room. "Aw no.... not again."

Mick laughs and shakes his head. "Don't worry. I'm not chasing you down. I figure Katie'll have you plenty busy today."

"Hardly." Hunter shrugs. "She keeps telling me I'm the one that has to think up something to do. Although today I thought I might just decide to do some more riding."

Mick's eyebrows arc.

Hunter catches the surprise and takes advantage. "Yeah, me and Bonzai got along so well yesterday, I figure we might just see if I could ride without falling off."

"Please... whatever you do, take a different horse." Mick grins and shakes his head. "Don't ride him again just 'cause we razzed you. He really is the roughest horse in the barn."

"Naw, he's one of my new friends. I can't ignore him now."

Mick finally shrugs. "I guess that's up to you. You know which saddle you used - feel free to use it again."

"I'll do that - thanks." Once Mick heads to get his own coffee, Hunter glances to Katie and lowers his voice. "So help me, even if you have to help me get on, I'm going to ride today."

"Oh." Jared felt a little silly. "I guess I didn't realize we were that close to wherever you wanted to get ice cream. Although it's not fair - you getting exercise and me just getting pushed along." He looks up at Grace and gives her a teasing grin.

"Shoes... um... I think they're in the bedroom by the nightstand."

Once Grace returns with his sneakers, he manages to get them on by himself without too much trouble before settling back again. Being pushed out to the sidewalk, he glances up over his shoulder. "About taking a drive, don't worry about it. I can have my mom maybe find somebody who can take it for a spin to get the cobwebs out. You don't need to waste your time with that today since you're already taking extra time for ice cream."

A warm smile spreads on Justin's lips as Beth calls him irresistible. He wasn't convinced that was necessarily the truth, but it did make him feel good that she at least thought he was.

Having her crawl up close and cuddle into him, he wraps his arms around her. Feeling her against him, curling up with him, it felt... good. Her comment about him smelling good brings a chuckle to the surface... and a little heat to his face. Craning his neck, he kisses the top of her head. "I try."

Rubbing her back gently, he turns his head to see the television and figure out where they were at in the movie. Lying here with Beth though was so comfortable that he realizes it might be harder than he thought not to doze off.

Garret didn't like hearing about Roberts, even though it was nothing new. He and Victoria didn't used to talk about their missions at all... but lately it seemed it was becoming harder for both of them.

Walking slowly around to the front of the swing, Garret eases down next to her, slipping his arm over her shoulders to pull her close. "Yeah... I'm feeling just fine now." He'd been forced to go one one mission already before completely recovering from his last... illness. But by now he was feeling himself again and quite capable to be back on the job. Not that he liked that. He'd almost rather be lying in bed miserable than out on the job and miserable. Although that might raise more questions with Victoria... and he wasn't yet willing to tell her why he'd been sick off and on, when he never used to be.

"I missed you too," he responds softly.

Turning a little, he brings his free hand to her chin to turn her face towards him. Leaning closer, he presses his lips to hers, letting the kiss flow deeply but gently.

Smell good

Studying Hunter for a few more long moments Katie wondered if it was just a sleepless night that plagued Hunter or many more things. Hearing his comment about a drink makes her giggle but it confirms her thoughts. Withdraws from drinking could never be fun and she'd seen it a few times. It never looked fun and Katie was happy her first time drinking had been her last and she wasn't addicted yet.

"Ah a drink might wake you up but it wouldn't last long. Will power and determination now thats what you have going for you to keep moving forward."

Giving a smile to Hunter and taking a drink of her own drink she lets the hot liquid slide down her throat. Even when it was hot out Katie still enjoyed her coffee in the morning. It was an important part of her day.

Looking at Hunter holding his cup up Katie gives a laugh and shakes her head a little bit. Holding her own glass up and clanking it with his and than taking a drink.

"To...a less sore day than yesterday."

Katie gives a little chuckle.

"The shoes I can totally do. If you tell me where they are I can even run inside and grab them for you."

Hearing that Jared wanted her to drive him car Grace just stops for a moment and looks at him. She had seen his car out in the drive way and new how nice it was. She'd never been in a car that nice before let alone been able to drive one. In a way it kind of made her nervous thinking about it because if something happened she would have no way to replace it.

"Well I was hoping we could walk to get the ice cream. It's good exercise, and such a nice day out...but how about afterwards we take a drive. You can even pick where we go."

Not still nervous it was turning slightly to excitement. Driving Jared's car might be fun and he would be with her so there was nothing to worry about there either.

Going behind him and starting to push forward Graces pushes him to the steps before stopping once again and coming around to in front of him. Once he told her where his socks and shoes were they could be off.

Finished with her cold treat Beth sets the bowl on the table before looking over to Justin. Watching him readjust himself she wonders what he is doing till be motions her over. Just continuing to sit there for a long moment Beth contemplates in her mind sliding over. She wanted to, she had wanted to for a long while not but she never had cuddled with anyone before.

   "You irresistible you know that."

Giving a small smile Beth slides over between Justin's legs and trys to position herself comfortable for herself and him. It felt kind of strange but she figured if she just did what was comfortable than how could it be wrong.

Finally Beth lays her head down on Justin's chest and lets out a small sigh. Even after a long day he still smelled so nice. Turning her head slightly into his chest she takes in a deep breath before laying her head on his chest again. In a soft voice she comments.

   "You smell good."

Feeling Garret's arms go around her Victoria brings her own hands up to his arms and holds them. Leaning her head to the side a little bit into Garret she new it was him, his walk, his smell, the way she felt in his arms. She could never doubt any of that for as long as she lived.

"It's good to be back. I missed you something horrible this time around."

And it was the truth. No matter how much she was use to it, it seemed each time it got harder and hard to be away. And with each mission she want on it got harder and hard to not cringe and push away anyone who got close to her. She was Garret's and no one else, no one but him was aloud to touch her but if she wanted to live, to survive that was not an option.

"The Roberts mission went smoothly. Like my grandfather had predicted he caved and said he would turn funds over to him as long as I came to visit again."

Victoria lets out a long sigh. She'd rather no go back there again but she new if it meant getting more information, more funding, she would be sent back. Fancy dinning, wine, buy new things it meant nothing. It was a front so she could be seen with whoever. It was empty, and cold.

"I hated it. Everything means nothing without you being the one by my side."

Turning a little Victoria does her best to give a smile to Garret. Enough with the depressing talk she wanted to be happy. She was home, she was with Garret, and all her crimes had been washed away in his eyes. That was what was important.

"How have you been feeling? Better? You look like you have a little more color than when I left. Not a day went by I didn't think of you, and couldn't wait to return home."

7/20/12

My Car

Hunter takes another slow sip of coffee before staring down into the hot liquid and watching it swirl.

"Hmm?" He'd barely heard Katie. "Oh... yeah, everything's fine."An image from his nightmare flashes in his mind. "Guess maybe I didn't sleep so well," he admits with a shrug. "Once I get going, I'll be right as rain."

Glancing back to his coffee, he gives a little smirk. "Although right about now, a stiff drink would be nice." So far though, he hadn't seen a drop of alcohol at the ranch, not even beer. It seemed a little strange to him that with this many people, nobody drank, but if they did, perhaps they hid it well.

Looking to Katie again, he manages a smile before clinking his cup of coffee to hers in a toast. "Cheers."

Jared stars up at Grace, half feeling like a burden to her, and half feeling awfully good. She really was making an effort, and he knew she was trying to make him feel better. He probably shouldn't have been grouchy in the first place so she wouldn't have needed to do this, but he might as well not buck her. It was obvious she was determined to go out for ice cream.

"Okay," he finally relents. "But you'll have to help me pick a good flavor, 'cause I don't know what I like."

Reaching up to take her hands, he takes a deep breath. This was gonna hurt. But he could do it with her help. Pulling himself up, he was glad that Grace knew what she was doing - she was strong, but it took know-how to be able to help someone up like this and not topple over. Partway to his feet, Jared's legs tremble with the effort. He had yet to stand up straight since therapy started, but at least this was an improvement, and at least he's close enough to the wheelchair to let himself fall back down into it instead of going the other direction.

Giving a huff, he glances at Grace with a wry grin. "I might get the hang of this after all." He looks down at his feet and wriggles his toes in his socks. "I'm gonna need shoes if we go somewhere though and..."

He purses his lips, giving a little cringe, not sure if he should ask or not. "Can we take my car? It needs to be driven but my mom doesn't drive and Justin won't use it even though I offered."

Justin is glad that Beth is willing to stay up, and he smiles. "Good. I'll get the ice cream and..." He points over near his television to a little shelf. "My DVDs are over there in no specific order. I like 'em all so pick whatever you want."

Before long, they both were settled on the couch as  the movie played and enjoyed the cold treat. Food didn't make things better, but it sometimes was something that could be enjoyed despite a bad day.

And when the bowls were empty, for the first time, Justin felt he could do what he'd wanted to for longer than he'd admit. Sliding back into the corner of the couch, he turns a little more sideways and sinks down until he's almost laying down, making room between his legs. Motioning Beth over, he offers for her to come settle in with him for the rest of the movie. He knew that she was tired and still somewhat upset from the day - hardly a time for him to make a move for anything more. He'd leave it up to her, though, whether she really wanted his chest for a pillow or not.

Standing in front of the window on the fourth floor, Garret's eyes wander the grounds. The returning black van had not escaped his sight, nor had the movement of Victoria heading inside. His relief was hidden well - she had returned once more. There was still a small ache though, in the pit of his heart. He knew what kind of mission she'd been on, and he knew that she'd been with another man in ways that were denied him.

He knew that he and Victoria both, somehow through this nightmare, had developed a strong sense of loyalty and respect for each other - without marriage, neither would cross certain lines. But without even the hope of marriage, it had become a tiresome battle. Even so, Garret would never trade her for any other woman. If they had to spend the rest of their lives as they were now, always hiding, never married, never publicly affectionate - he'd do it.

Still... Garret knew her seductive jobs on most missions. And she knew about his own roles on most missions. Neither of them could avoid the inevitable. But they never spoke of it. Garret refused to look at Victoria any differently - the same as she never lost respect for him. It didn't take away that ache though... that pain way down deep that he was forced to keep hidden.

"...and I will give those plans to Terrance."

Garret's mind suddenly registers again the conversation that he'd been having with Medridge. He'd lost the train of thought, and for a split second, his adrenaline races. Thankfully, he recovered too quickly for Medridge to catch on. "That sounds like a good idea." He turns from the window and slowly walks around the other side of Medridge's desk, his hands clasped behind his back. "Might I suggest sending Jacobson on that job? It would be a good trial to see if he follows through."

"Excellent suggestion." Medridge jots down a note on his desk and nods. "Oh and by the way, you're going out tomorrow."

"Oh?"

"Yes. I need you to visit Sarah Regal again. She needs to be...persuaded to give up that intel we've been looking for."

Garret bristles. Speaking of loathsome jobs. Sarah was one of his "regulars" when it came to softening up someone the Agency needed. He wasn't sure which he'd prefer - a mission like this, or a mission where he'd murder innocent victims. Both made his stomach churn in ways that it didn't used to. How had he stayed numb for so long? "Good. I'm sure I can bring back what we need."

Medridge's lips curl into a crooked grin. "Your confidence is well-founded, I'm sure."

Half an hour later, Garret was heading down the long staircase. His combat clothing rustled as he moved, weighted by the usual gun on his thigh and other hidden weapons. Always be prepared - that was his job.

Making his way casually across the grounds, he stopped often to take up an observant stance as he watched. When not in Medridge's office, he was on guard duty - at all times. Soon though, he has slipped past the security cameras once again to disappear into the thick brush...the wall of safety.

As he sees Victoria on the swing, his heart gave a jolt like it always did. She was beautiful, no matter what. Coming up behind her, he leans down, draping his arms over her shoulders and burying his face along her neck. He breathed in deeply, filling his nostrils with the scent of her freshly shampooed hair. Leaning over her shoulder, he kisses her cheek softly. "I'm glad you're back," he welcomes quietly.

Withdraw?

Giving a laugh at Hunter's nickname he'd given her this morning Katie shakes her head a little bit. That was a new one for sure but Katie didn't mind. She could be called worse things so sticking with cupcake sounded good.

   "Good Morning!"

Sitting down Katie could see the exhausted look in Hunter's eye and it makes her cocks her head a little bit. She'd never seen Hunter quite this tired before when she's known he went to bed last night. Was it a bad night for him or just a rough mornng?

" You look like you're half asleep still. Everything alright?"

Taking a sip of her coffee Katie continues to study Hunter. He looked, worn out, tired, or like a person with a lot on his mind. She wondered what one it was or maybe it was all of them. I was it the lack of bad hobbits that was catching up with Hunter and maybe causing him withdraws?

"If I had better things I wanted to do I would be doing them Jared."

Gathering her things up and putting them back in her bag Grace works quickly before looking up at Jared and giving a smile. Holding out her hand to him his last comment goes ignored. She'd help him back up in his chair as long as she showed the effort to try and do it himself too.

"Alright lets get you up and hit the road. Not literately though. Since I mentioned ice cream I've got a craving for it and it's to nice to just sit here. So shall we?"

Grace's eyes give a sparkle as she looks at Jared. She'd see the wave of hope in his eyes, and the spark of excitement. Thats what she wanted to see, she wanted him to keep having that and not let it die out. Maybe getting him out and around was the way to do that.

Getting to Justin's place and petting the dogs for long moment Beth just lets them nuzzle her hand. They were was soft and there noses were wet and cold. On Beth's hand it kind of tickled and she didn't mind it at all. The dogs were almost comforting to her and gave a sense of shelter.

Following him inside and to the couch Beth puts her bag and pillow down. She didn't mind sleeping on Justin's couch. If asked that was where she rather sleep anyways. Sometimes they could be a lot more comfortable than a strange bed.

"Ice cream is always good, and a movie to go with it is a must. Though I can't promise I will stay away for the whole thing, I will try."

Giving a little smile to Justin Beth's eyes still held some of the fear from earlier. She probley wouldn't be able to sleep right now as it was with the thoughts that were running through her mind. So spending a little more time awake with Justin sounded like a better plan and the sweet treat was a nice all. Maybe that would help her feel a little better.

"Where do you keep your movies? I'll see about picking one...if you want."

Exiting the black van Victoria sets out a few shopping bags in hand. Her mission away this time had been a intrusting one to say the least and while she'd hated being two weeks away from the estate the good side was she got to go on a shopping spree and spend someone else money.

Going straight to her room to put her stuff away Victoria sits down in front of her vanity and just looks at herself for several long moments. This was lift, in and out of the same thing, seducing whoever for whatever...and yet her heart belonged to one. It was a horrible feeling honestly and inside something screamed at her that it was wrong. But...this was life.

Taking a quick shower, and slipping into one of her dresses she lets her hand just hang damp for the moment. She didn't feel much like putting it up at the moment. She only goal was one thing to see the one person who always made her feel ok.

Making her way outside, and to her favorite spot  on the whole estate Victoria sits down on the swing and gently rocks back and forth. She still needed to report to her grandfather but right now she wanted to see someone else first. She new, he would know she was back and she new he would come if he could get away. But she would wait and see for a little bit if he would or not.

Cupcake

Justin offers Beth a smile and heads for the door. There was no point in sticking around here any longer.

The drive to his house was long, but seemed even longer tonight. It stays mostly quiet, Justin making sure his hand was available to hold if Beth wanted it, but letting her rest on the way too. After they arrive at his place, the dogs greet them both with licks and wags of their tails, happy to see them. Seeming to sense something was wrong, they don't get too excited, but simply stick close, nuzzling hands and following on their heels.

Once inside, Justin lets Beth put her bag in the living room - he'd give her his bed in a heartbeat... if his bedroom was in any shape for anybody but him to see it. As it was though, it was a war zone and he'd prefer she bunk down on the couch, which was still pretty comfortable for sleeping.

Retrieving a sheet and a couple blankets from the hall closet, he joins her in the living room. It was early yet, but he'd let her decide if she wanted to stay up or go to sleep.

"I got some ice cream in the fridge," he offers. "We could watch a movie or something if you want or... if you'd rather call it a night, that's okay too." He kind of hoped she'd want to stay up for a little while - he wasn't tired yet and he'd kind of been looking forward to being able to cuddle up with her for the first time since they'd started dating. But if she wanted to sleep, he'd leave her be.

Jared's head turns quickly to Grace as he looks at her in surprise. Ice cream? She wanted to take him away from here and go do something? Really? He had no idea that a hopeful excitement shot through his gaze.

"We're... not even done," he reasons, still a bit confused. She'd said she wanted to keep working with his legs - they'd hardly done anything at all today yet. She'd chided him for not wanting to do it, and now she was offering to give him a break? Though appealing, it had caught him off guard.

"But if you want to... I mean... I'm sure you've got better things to do today."

His gaze drops again. He really wanted to go. All he'd seen was the hospital, the scenery on the way to his mother's house, and his mother's house. That was it. He didn't remember anything else, and really did want to see more. Go do something. Get out of the confines of the house. And yet... he knew that this wasn't Grace's norm. He knew that she was probably just trying to be nice to him since he'd been grouchy. And he didn't want her to think she needed to do this since she did have a job to do. He was just another client and he didn't want to take advantage of her kindness.

"We can keep working here," he reasons quietly. "I won't complain anymore."

Hunter was so close to dozing off, that he didn't even hear Katie until she speaks. Forcing his eyes open and turning to look up at her, he gives her a drowsy smile. "Nothing's ever free, but I'm not saving it."

Pulling out the chair next to him, he gestures for Katie to sit down. Yawning, he rubs his eye with the heel of his hand. "Good morning, Cupcake."

Ice Cream

Heading out of the living room and into her bed room Beth pulls out her bag and sets it on the bed. As she puts a few items she would need into it she could help it that she mind wondered. Was going to Justin's really a good idea? Was there more to this offer than just not wanting her to be alone? Could she really trust him?

Trying to shake those thoughts from her mind she thought it crazy to even double guess what Justin's motives where. He's had helped her with so many things, and on so many levels, he was just once again trying to help her thought a rough patch.

   "Alright, I think I'm ready."

Coming out into the living room Beth has her bag slung over her shoulders and one of her pillows. She didn't know if she would need them or not but it never hurt to bring one. That was a little bit of home was with her too. She was about ready as she was going to be.

"Nope, I could get tired of eating the same thing everyday, or watching the same movie every day but not you. You always surprise me with something new. "

Giving a smile and not taking her eyes off Jared she could read him pretty clean. Today he was not really feeling this and his hope and willpower was starting to dwindle. That was the last thing Grace wanted to happen and she had to think of something quick before he went into a down ward spiral.

"How would you like to go for an adventure. I saw an ice cream shop on my way up here and I think for today you have done pretty good. Might be nice to get away and just have a little fun too. All work and no play right?"

Graces eyes give a little sparkle. It wasn't something amazing but it might put a little spark back into Jared. Ice cream made everyone feel better no matter what was wrong. It would be time away, doing something and not just working on his legs. Maybe going about this whole thing would be different with Jared. She might have just to think of different ways to make this more fun.

Entering the dinning hall and seeing Hunter at one of the far tables Katie can't help but smile. She wondered if Justin was getting use to the early hours or if it was determination to not let her Uncles get the best of him that made him wake early.

Going into the kitchen and grabbing a bagel along with a cup of coffee she returns to Hunters table. Setting her stuff down she clears her throat a little bit as her eyes give a little dance. Every morning just seemed to get better and better. Standing there for a long moment just watching Hunter with his eyes closed Katie finally speeks.

"So is this seat free or are you saving it for someone?"
