Thinking

Jeff smirks a little, but his eyes give away a teasing glint. He would just about bet anything that Hunter drove fast whether he was racing or not. But as long as he was doing it safely, Jeff was glad Katie could at least have some fun. And he certainly wouldn't tell on them.

Hunter's own expression had turned a bit sheepish as he concentrates on his sandwich. Katie's comment though snaps his gaze back up. "I have you know that my pants never have, nor ever will be smart." He taps his head. "All those brains are mine."

Jeff chuckles and rolls his eyes. "Case in point."

Hunter just grins and takes another bite of sub, giving Katie a silly look.

It wasn't too long before everyone had finished their subs - not long enough, if it was going to end their time together. But as Katie clears up the leftover trash and goes to find a garbage can, Hunter takes advantage of staying in the room alone with Jeff for just a few moments, hoping for an open door to talk to him.

Seated in the chair, he studies Jeff, cocking his head slightly.

Jeff catches his eye and wonders what's going through the young man's mind. "So... what do you think of the ranch?"

"I like it." Hunter's response didn't take much thought. "It's peaceful. Just like Katie described."

"Mmm... it always has been. I give Rosetta credit for that." Pausing, Jeff chews the inside of his lip, mulling over his thoughts. "How's Katie doing?" It might seem an odd question, but though he knew Katie was struggling lately, he wondered if Hunter had any different insights.

Hunter takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly. "I think she'll be okay. Seeing her out here is different. I think it's good for her." He pauses, wondering if this was the chance he'd been waiting for. "She's... pretty worried about you, ya know."

Jeff sighs and gives a half roll of his eyes. "Everybody is."

"No, seriously." Hunter's tone had grown firmer. "I don't pretend to know what it's like to have a good relationship with one's father. But I can tell Katie adores you. And I may not have known her long, but this is the first time I've seen her this scared." He pauses, pursing his lips. "I know something like a heart attack can't necessarily be helped - you didn't mean for it to happen. But it's really stressing out Katie... especially when she thinks you're not going to take care of yourself when you get back home."

Jeff glances down for a moment, toying with the bedsheet. He hadn't meant to worry people, least of all Katie. He hadn't meant to make things worse for her, and it made him feel awful to think he was just adding to her already-huge amount of stress. "You don't pull any punches, do you?"

"No, sir. Never have, never will. I make a lot of risky bets, but one bet I know for sure is that the truth and honesty are always best."

Jeff's gaze rises once more and he studies Hunter's face. "You must really care about Katie to tell me all this."

Hunter swallows hard. "She's a good friend."

"Are you a good friend to her?"

Hunter wonders now who's not pulling punches. "I make a lot of mistakes... and I've made some stupid moves, but... I'm doing my best to be a good friend to her. She's too special to lose."

"Now that... we agree on."

Hunter mirrors Jeff's smile, getting the sudden feeling that Katie's father approved of him. Why, he wasn't sure - Hunter figured he wasn't the type that others would trust, especially with someone they cared about like Katie. But they all seemed to accept him. Was it Katie's word they were going on? Or... did they somehow see past all the trouble he'd gotten himself into in order to hide from the world? He wondered.

Hearing Katie reenter the room, the conversation is dropped and Hunter looks up at her, still smiling. "Thought maybe you fell into the garbage can or something. We were ready to come looking for you."

Five. Jason shuts down his computer and stands, stretching. For once, he wasn't tired after work. He'd slept well the night before after such a fun evening, and having this evening to look forward to too was.... well, maybe it was just motivation to not want to just go home and sack out on the couch.

Wandering from his office, he heads down the hall to the infirmary and sees the door open. The room was void of Rick though, and Jason enters, ambling towards Misty's desk. "So did you decide where we're going to eat?"

Sitting on the edge of her desk, he gives her a silly grin. "Unless you wanted to see a double feature tonight instead and pig out on pop corn. But... that's not always the healthiest choice. Not that... I've ever done that..."

Dani giggles again, nudging Dalton's knee with her bare foot. "I like thinking..."

Leaving her hands to slide through his hair, she accepts his kiss again, murmuring her pleasure. Feeling his arms around her. His warmth. His protection. His love. She could stay like this forever.

She'd never be one to say she'd had a hard life, or a bad one. But looking back from where she was today, she could see many holes that she hadn't realized existed. And one of them, Dalton was filling, whether he realized it or not. Haunted with memories of the past, he chased them all away, giving her reason to keep moving... keep walking... keep loving and accepting love.

Moving her lips from his, she kisses him lightly up his jawline to his ear then trailing down his neck as her hands move to tuck around his shoulders. Coming up for air, she returns to his lips, speaking softly between deep kisses. "Is this... the kind of... thinking..." She cocks her head to continue her passionate affection, her foot teasingly running down his leg. "...you were... thinking about?"

Waiting

Sitting down and eating her sub Katie take a bit before closing her eyes and leaning back a little. She had always loved the taste of the ranches homemade food. Trying to explain it to someone was never the same as eating it. She was happy now Hunter got to enjoy it as well and know what she meant.

Hearing the mention of the motorcycle Katie smile before looking to her dad and giving a small sheepish look. She could never lie to him even if it was to make him feel better, but she didn't want to come right out and say Hunter speeded either.

   "I am sure he does.."

Katie lowers her voice as she is about to take another bit of her sub.

   "Sometimes."

Looking away and to Hunter Katie can't help the smile. She really was happy her was here, and he was giving her a reason to smile. He just seemed to have a knack for that. And when she was down...his friendship was just there to help her once again proving that even if he had his own problems he was the right choose for a friend.

"So yes, I don't think I'd even kick Hunter out by the way. I kinda like having him around even when he's a smarty pants."

After having one more s'more and feeling sleepy but not ready to call it a night she leans back in the grass and uses Trooper as a pillow. Not very comfortable but it would do. Looking up at the starts and watching a few Misty lays her hands on her stomach just listing to the music and letting it lull her.

The time flys by and as Misty almost fall asleep she know she better call it a night or she wont make it home with Alec. Sitting her her gives a stretch and stands just trying to shake the tiredness off.

"Well my dear friends, I hate to call it a night but I am whooped. I really had a great time though...so thanks."

...Work the next say was pretty normal and seemed to only inch by. Misty had left a note for Alec when she had gotten up before she. It told him she wouldn't be home for dinner tonight but there were left overs in the fridge and he could help himself to anything. Also she asked if he could clean out the shed and almost everything in there could be thrown out.

Sitting behind her desk now and continuing to look at the clock Misty just wanted five to come and soon. She wanted to go to dinner and a movie with Jason and was excited about it. They would be leaving from work so all she could do was wait for those slow hands to tick.

As Dalton is moved around a little bit and Dani lays on top of him he can't help but let his smile grow even more. Receiving Dani's kiss he could feel his pulse start to race. Just letting his own passion escape as his arms go around Dani. The his one hand making its way to the back of her head and his other rubbing her back gently.

"Well I am glad you know better than just thinking but...if I can get another kiss out of it you can continue to think."

Dalton gives a grin before leaning up to Dani again and giving her another kiss. This time letting it last even longer he back away a little just turning his head and than coming close once more. Goosebumps cover his skin as he keeps Dani close just continue the exchange.

Know

"Mmm..." Dani giggles as Dalton pulls away, her hand resting on his arm. "I think I love you too."

Giving him a mischievous grin, she shifts around, making him lie on his back as she slides over on top of him. Still grinning as she leans on his chest, her eyes twinkle in the dim light cast by the television. Slipping her hands up over his shoulders, her fingers run up the sides of his face before raking back through his hair.

Without saying anything, she leans down to kiss his lips as her fingers continue to comb his hair. Letting her spontaneous moment of passion last for a few long moments, she finally withdraws to let him catch his breath.

Smiling brightly, she shakes her head. "Naw... I don't think. I know I love you too."

The sun will always shine...
Would it? Alec wondered. It didn't feel like the sun was shining very much in his world lately. He was grateful beyond words for Misty's help, and even Jason's acceptance of him. But aside from those things... his world still seemed very dim. Would he ever rise above again? Would he ever regain what he'd lost? Be able to face the world with the confidence he'd owned before? He just wasn't sure of anything anymore.

Catching Misty's gaze as he plays, Jason's smile returns. Watching her sit by the fire was somehow a peaceful picture that he wanted to remember. He'd had fun tonight, even with Alec around and Trooper's shenanigans. And he was already looking forward to tomorrow night.

Teasing Katie mercilessly as he helps her create the subs, Hunter can only grin at her, loving the banter, and also knowing that keeping Jeff smiling was a good thing too.

"Sheesh, finally." Hunter grabs the paper plates. "What took you so long?"

"She wants to torture me with seeing the food but not being able to eat it," Jeff quips. He grins though, and tosses Katie a wink. He was hungry, but far from starving.

Once they're all settled in with their food, Jeff nods his approval. "Good stuff. Thanks, Katie."

"Yeah, okay," Hunter agrees, chewing his own bite. "I guess it's pretty good."

Jeff chuckles and takes a sip of water. "I don't know, Kiddo..." He looks to Katie with a quirked eyebrow. "You may not be able to stand this guy if he sticks around the ranch too long. You might need to kick him out here pretty soon."

"Naw." Hunter interrupts. "She knows if she does that, she won't get anymore motorcycle rides from me."

"Ah. I forgot about that." He gives his daughter a sidelong glance. "He stays within the speed limit, I'm sure..."

...you know that?

Watching as he goes back to strumming on the guitar and listing to him sing Misty continues to smiles. Loud was good but soft sometimes was even better. The lulling music making her sway a little. The sound was so soft, so nice, it was Jason's way of sharing how he felt without even knowing it.

Taking the bag and getting her own marshmallow's from Alec Misty shakes her head a little bit. She was again happy that it seemed Alec was having fun. It was something they all needed and she was thankful they could help him while helping themselves too.

"It seems you have the knack for roasting the marshmallow's too. Most people burn them till they are black the first few times but you...you have the nice coloring to it."

Putting her own marshmallow over the fire Misty turns it slowly getting a nice even color around it till it was in black almost. Not seeming upset about it Misty places it between the gram cracker and chocolate. Taking a bit and giving a merer of satisfaction Misty looks to Alec again.

"I however...have always liked mine extra crispy as long as the middle is still gooey."

As Alec draws closer to her Misty looks to him and gives a soft smile followed by a nod. What more could she ask for it was the prefect night and she was glad everything when welll. Even with Troopers little episode.

"You're very welcome Alec. I am happy you enjoyed yourself. I like having fellowship with my friends its really refreshing and reminds me that the sun will always shine."

Looking back to Jason and smiling her eyes giving a twinkle Misty takes another bite of her s'more than looks back to the fire. This had been...a good night.

Laying on the couch and having Dani tucked in front of him Dalton keeps his arm around her. He liked feeling her in his arms and cuddles up next to her. It made him feel good and in a way...it made him feel safe too. Dani had been the best thing that had happened to him in a long time and he couldn't help but think maybe God had this planned all along.

"I definitely don't want to miss out on those kisses but...it's so comfortable right here I make no promises that I wont fall asleep myself."

Lifting himself up a little bit Dalton leans over Dani and rubs his nose against her before leaning closer and pressing his lips against hers. Letting it linger for a long moment he finally pulls away with a twinkle in his eye.

"I love you so much you know that!"

"Psht, you gotta be kidding me...this tastes better than subway."

Katie points the knife at Hunter for a second looking quiet stern though in her eyes layed a little bit of humor.

"Better not let anyone at the ranch know you said that about the homemade rolls though. They might think you detest them and that my friend might not go over big."

Giving a big smile and going back to work on the subs Katie's eyes continue to twinkle as she works putting everything together. As Hunter comes up next to her Katie gives him a little shove back with her hip.

"Didn't you know asking a woman if she can cook is dangerous....however you can help if you want."

Continuing to work along side Hunter they pump out a few subs without to much trouble but the humor was continued as Katie tried to keep things light. She wanted to at least put a smile on her dads face even if it was a little one.

   "Alright boys...we can now feast."

Risky Business

As Misty holds his hand for a moment, Jason lets his fingers curl around hers. He did care about her... and he knew that she understood that.

Glancing back up as she does, his own soft smile forms. As she retreats though, he just stays where he is, watching her... trying to figure out what these feelings he had meant. His worst fear was misinterpreting what he felt since emotions still felt somewhat numb part of the time. But gauging Misty's response... he'd done no wrong and... what he felt was mutual.

Finally letting the whole thing drop for now, Jason stands and brushes himself off, walking the few feet to where he'd left his guitar. Easing back down under the tree, he plucks a few strings before retuning a couple by ear. Picking another relaxing song, he plays and sings quietly. He wanted to play for Misty - not the whole park.

Catching Misty's glance, Alec smirks at her. "Yeah, don't leave me alone too long with this stuff - I'm addicted already." Only after snitching another couple marshmallows does he let her have the bag.

Roasting two on the end of his stick, he waits until they're brown before pulling them back from the fire. Content just with them, it's an awfully sticky, ooey-gooey mess, but as he licks his fingers, he realizes that it's kinda fun.

Scooting over on the grass nearer Misty, he gives her an inquisitive look before tackling his second marshmallow. He didn't say anything though. He didn't ask. It really was none of his business, even if he was curious. Rethinking his speech, he simply thanks her instead. "Thanks for having me come with you guys tonight. It's been fun."

Dani looks over at Dalton and smiles, grateful for his support. It really did mean a lot to her. "Thanks, Dalton. I know I can always count on you."

Eventually the dark topic of Carson is dismissed and forgotten, leaving the lighthearted chatter once more. When dinner is finished, Dani opts to wait a while for dessert since they were both full, and a movie is popped in to watch.

Settling in on the couch with Dalton, Dani curls himself in front of him, letting him drape his arm around her. Feeling his chest on her back and his strong arm holding her, she felt safe... protected. He was like a big blanket to keep her warm and ward away the shadows of the night.

"Don't let me fall asleep," she muses. "If you do, you'll probably miss out on several kisses at least, along with that pie."

Hunter laughs at Katie's enthusiasm. "I feel like I'm at Subway. I didn't know they made house calls."

Jeff grins and shakes his head. "You know what I like... just throw a little of everything on there. I guarantee it's better than what I had for breakfast."

"Anything is better than hospital food," Hunter agrees. For a brief moment, the image of the hospital back home flashes through his mind, and his friend lying in bed after the accident. And again, he felt the pangs of guilt for his recklessness that had hurt somebody.

Realizing he was staring at the floor, he snaps up his gaze and stands, coming to help Katie. Snitching a little piece of cheese that had broken off a slice, he elbows her. "You sure you know what you're doing? Making subs is risky business."

Is best

Misty's gaze doesn't break Jason's, she continues to study the depth of his eyes. The warmth that just seemed to blanket her Misty didn't want to go away and if she broke her gaze would it? Would this moment be over, gone in the wind to never be spoken about again? There friendship remaining as it always had.

Feeling Jason's fingers on her own Misty finally looks down. His touch so soft, so light, one might think because he played the guitar his hands would be rough with callouses but they went at all. They were the complete opposite.

"Music...yes I think more music would be lovely."

Closing her fingers around Jason's for a second Misty just holds his hand. There was something about him that was so different, something about them, there friendship, and the feelings that ran deeper. And so the though lingered as Misty's fingers ran over Jason's hand for a second.

Finally looking up at him again Misty gives a smile. Letting go of his hands she lets her fingers brush over his before she retreats back to her seat. Looking over to Alec she gives another smile and than looks to Jason again now with a silly little grin on her lips.

"I guess this would be a good time to make my own s'more before they are all gone."

Giving a small nod Dalton picks up his drink and swirls the ice around in the liquid for a moment before taking a sip. He understood what Dani meant even though he'd never been in that situation before. He could see the pain as clear as day on her face though and his made his own heart hurt.

"Yeah, I get what your saying Dani."

Maybe one day she would be able to have some kind of relationship with her brother again. Even if it was small talk here and there at least it would be something even if at this point Carson didn't deserve it.

"Well no matter what you deiced Babe I am behind you one it. You're a smart woman and I know you will do what you think is best."

Turning to look at Hunter a little bit Katie listen's to his story. She wondered what the moral was behind it or what it even had to do with everything going on. Not stopping him though Katie herself just keeps listing. By the end of the story she was nodding her own head. She'd found the meaning and understood it.

   "Mmmm..."

Giving a smile and nod to Hunter Katie was pleased. Hearing Jeff's comment she turns back to him and gives yet another nod. Today she almost felt like a bobble head with all the head bobbing.

"He sure is, a smart one too once you get through that thick outside layer."

As Hunter changes the subject Katie could tell he was feeling slightly uncomfortable with the spot light being pointed on him or maybe it was the simple fact he didn't want the point of his message to be over looked.

Just moving along with him Katie stands and goes back to where she had placed everything out. Giving a smile and pointing to each item she says what it is along with the fresh sub rolls that still smelled of so good.

"Alright boys what are ya having...tell me and you wish shall be done!"

7/3/12

Palm

Misty's hand on Jason's cheek brings heat to his face, but he doesn't pull away. Her touch was so soft...gentle. He'd always seen her as so rough and tumble - a kick butt chick. But right now in this short moment, he knew he was gazing on a tenderhearted woman. What was happening between them? Was this just something in the heat of the moment that would be gone in the morning? Was this how they truly felt about each other?

For a mere second Jason recalls the one kiss he had shared with Misty oh so long ago. There had been no doubt that they liked each other. Been attracted to each other. Some might call it chemistry. But they had known that they had different paths to take - and so they had parted to remain only as friends. And it was a friendship that had stayed as such - respectful of each other, and never daring to approach any lines, much less cross any.

But what about now? What about now when Jason had been left on his own, dealt a broken, lonely heart? What about now when Misty's husband had left her and she was going through a divorce to finalize the break and be her own woman again? They had no one else. They had no other paths that would dictate their actions. But... did that mean they were really free enough to show each other affection? Jason's heart skips a beat.

Having some marshmallow wiped from his face, he grins and finishes his mouthful, licking some chocolate off his lips. It only takes another bite or two to finish the s'more, but even as he swallows the last bit, his eyes still search Misty's. Why did he feel as though he were standing on the edge of a cliff, ready to fall?

"Thank you..." His voice was quiet... almost a whisper. A gentle breeze blew through the park and he reaches over to tuck a wisp of hair behind Misty's ear. His hand trails down her arm until finding her hand, where his fingers run slowly through her palm. Looking down and studying her hand, he spreads his fingers, laying his palm to hers.

Without lifting his eyes, he speaks softly. "Did you say you wanted some more music?"

Dani nods, shifting her hand under Dalton's to feel his warm comfort. "I want to forgive him... maybe I already do, I don't know."

She sighs deeply. "He's just... I guess he's just not the kind of person anymore that I want anything to do with, ya know?" She looks up again, tears hiding behind her eyes. "I know how important family is. Carson meant the world to me. But I guess I can't let blood override how I feel about his decisions and his lifestyle. It's not that I'm just mad at him or hold a grudge... I just don't want to have a relationship with somebody I can't trust."

Pulling back her hand, she picks up her fork again to return to her meal, although suddenly it didn't taste quite as good. "Just because I forgive doesn't mean I have to talk to him," she states quietly. "I can't risk my heart again."

"Yeah." Jeff nods. "The doctor is still saying tomorrow afternoon. As long as everything stays stable 'til then, that is. He said he wants to try some new heart medication on me that should allow me to do normal stuff I want, just no heavy working... like usual."

Hunter can see the depression in Jeff's eyes and he felt badly. He couldn't imagine not being able to do the things he wanted. Hard physical labor felt good. Kept him in shape. Kept him motivated. To have to find something else... that would be hard. "Ya know, one time I took apart a pocket watch my uncle had."

Jeff quirks an eyebrow, having no idea where Hunter was going with this random thought. "Okay..."

Hunter grins. "Well, see, I wasn't very old and I wanted to see how it worked. And... I was doing it at the kitchen table while he was outside - figured I'd have a looksee before he came back in. But when I got the back off..." He throws his fingers apart like a little explosion. "Kaplooey. Parts went everywhere. Needless to say, I didn't get it put back together before my uncle came inside. I didn't even get all the parts picked up."

His expression grows sheepish. "When he came back in, he didn't get mad, but he did have to hunt down all the parts on the floor with me. Then when he finally got everything put back together, it didn't work. Well... took him several hours but he finally realized there was one itty-bitty spring missing.  I remember thinking he had to be wrong - that nothing could fit into that tiny space. We scoured the kitchen floor until it was way past my bedtime."

Jeff cocks his head, still not sure what the point was, and beginning to wonder if Hunter had a cog loose himself. "Ever find it?"

"Nope." Hunter rolls his eyes. "And... the watch never worked again either. With all those other parts in there... the big springs and the shiny gears and all that... no matter how hard they worked together and tried to run... it just wasn't successful anymore, even when that missing part was so small. The watch needed it to run. It was that simple."

A sudden silence takes over the room as Jeff is hit with Hunter's point. Hard. Sinking back a little, he studies the younger man's face, finding it difficult to be offended at that calm, honest expression. No, all he could do was acknowledge that the point was valid and aimed directly at his attitude.

A small smile spreads on his lips and he shakes his head. Glancing over to Katie, he points at Hunter. "You better look out for this guy. He's a slick one."

"Naw." Hunter didn't want this conversation to turn back around to him, and quickly moves on. "So are we having lunch or what? I, for one, am starving."

Family

Feeling Jason's touch against her own Misty couldn't help but close her eyes for a second before opening them. It was electric going through her body but not the kind that hurt, it was more of the kind that made a warm fuzzy feeling and gave goose bumps.

Jason and herself had always had an attraction to each other, something that connected them to one another. But both had known and respected too that life had just not worked out for them to be together. However now...now it seemed that feeling that had lied at bay had come back ten fold.

Returning her eyes to Jason's Misty just smiles again. It was much different from the grins she had givin Carson this was more of a soft smile one that lit up Misty's face like the rising of a new sun, and it had been thanks to Jason she was able to keep this smile even if he didn't know it. His friendship meant the world to her and knowing she didn't have to go through it alone was a comfort.

Bringing her free hand to Jason's face Misty lets her thumb run over his cheek bone for a long moment as she just maps the side of his face. Finally stopping her finger by his mouth Misty whipes a peace of stray marshmallow away and gives a small giggle.

Giving a nod Dalton moves to the cubord  and pulls out the place settings before going back to the table to set everything up. Making sure it all looked good Dalton returns to the kitchen and helps Dani a little more. He was an ok cook and if given a little direction he could help and it would still be edible.

Finally sitting down to eat Dalton liked hearing about Dani's day and her new job. Anything she talked about Dalton liked listing. He liked the sounded of her voice it was almost mesmerizing. And he found what he did to be boring to anyone else who was not hands on with it even if he did tell her a little and she seemed intrusted.

Hearing the phone and raising her eyebrow Dalton looks at Dani for a long seconds. Seeing the look on her face and hearing who it was Dalton could feel his head sink a little bit for her. He was upset with what was going on with Carson but he felt worse for Dani.

"I think it depends on you really. If you're not ready to talk to him yet than don't. But also I don't think you should hold a grudge either. Even if you don't want to talk to him now I think you should have the intent to talk to him sooner or later."

Reaching across the table and placing his hand on top of her Dalton gives a smile to Dani. His eyes giving a small twinkle. Dalton new how much Dani had looked up to Carson and loved working with him. This whole mess, this one mistake had torn that away. He couldn't understand why Carson would do that.

"Family should always stick together even when we get mad at them. So...sooner or later just remember to forgive him."

Katie shakes her head setting the bag down. Let him be depressed and miserable of course she wouldn't let him be. Putting the bag and pulling everything out of the bag she lines the stuff up looking to Jeff and smiling.

"No you can't be depressed and down. You need to be happy...you alive and have people who love you."

Sitting down Katie looks to Hunter and gives him a thanks. Looking at Jeff Katie is quiet for a moment. She wasn't sure what to say she didn't want to make him upset or saying the wrong thing.

"So any more news on when you can come home? I know they were talking about tomorrow originally. We miss you back at the ranch so we can't wait for you to get home."

Awoken

Looking at the s'more in Misty's hand, Jason isn't sure what he meant by "help," but this would do just fine, even if it was rather silly. Gaining a new grin, he leans forward and takes a bite, feeling the sweet melting sugars tickle his tastebuds. It had been a long time since he'd had a real s'more and this one tasted oh so good.

Drawing back only slightly to chew, his eyes somehow find themselves locked with Misty's. As the fire flickers in her eyes, a strange chill runs down his spine and he almost shivers. While his inner instincts suddenly give him an odd warning that he should be backing away, there was simply no awkwardness felt. Being this close to Misty... felt... good. He didn't want to move away. He liked her attention. He liked dancing with her gaze.

And as his eyes pierce hers, there's a sudden change in the air, like a cool breeze blowing over them... as if something dormant had just awoken.

Taking another bite of the s'more, Jason's hand goes to Misty's to steady it and make less of a mess.

Alec leans back against the picnic table, quite content with eating his own s'more and enjoying the new treat. But as he glances over to Misty and Jason, he finds himself staring. That... seemed... like more than just a friendly gesture, did it not? Were they...? Alec had always seen Jason and Misty as friends and had assumed that hadn't changed. But what he was seeing right now, quite possibly portrayed something different - at least in his mind. He wasn't too sure what he thought of that possibility, but for now, he just sits quietly where he is. It was pretty obvious that his presence had been forgotten at this point anyway.

"Ummm...." Dani withdraws from Dalton and thinks for a moment. "If you wanna just set the table, that'd be great, and I'll get the food started. You can help me mix up the pasta salad as soon as I get that ready, too."

Dani always liked cooking, but having Dalton hanging around as she did made it all the more fun. She liked Libby's company, of course, but having Dalton over was special and she enjoyed it more every time.

Eventually they were sitting at the kitchen table enjoying the meal and chatting about the day. Dani liked telling Dalton about her job and the people she was getting to know at the radio station. She wasn't sure if he found all of that interesting, but she liked hearing about his work too, even when it was all about computers.

Halfway through the meal, Dani hears her phone vibrating at the other end of the table. Picking it up, she checks the number. Her shoulders drop and she declines the call, setting her phone back down again. Sighing, she shakes her head, playing with some pasta on her plate with a fork.

"Carson keeps calling," she admits. "Keeps leaving me messages that he just wants to talk but... I haven't called him back."

She looks up at Dalton, her eyes proving how much it pained her to be separated from her brother like this, yet she was still so angry with his decisions and lifestyle. "Am I wrong?"

Seeing Katie, Jeff's eyes light up and he smiles his greeting. "Hey, Kiddo." Pulling himself up to sit a little straighter in the bed, he also nods to Hunter. "Hi there."

"Hey." Hunter gives him a wave. "How's it goin'?"

Jeff smirks. "How's it look like?" He looks back to Katie and shrugs. "I'm feeling okay." His body was still utterly exhausted, but it wasn't going to stop him from enjoying this visit. "Mostly just bored."

Seeing the bag of food, he quirks an eyebrow and grins. "You won't let me be miserable, will you?"

Hunter chuckles as he pulls a couple chairs closer to the bed. "She has a way of doing that, I've discovered."

Silence

Watching Alec as he made his treat Misty gives a smile. Seeing he was enjoying himself and even hearing the small chuckle she smiles. She was happy to hear that from him and happy he was enjoying himself. If nothing else matter this did.

"You can have as many as you like Alec, just make sure you leave me at least one."

Turning back to Jason and smile Misty see him put his guitar down and is about to hand him a stick when she hears his comment. Smirking for a second she thinks studying his face for a long second.

"Well I do like the music, and I do want you to play more so...I guess I am going to feed you the treat."

Looking down at the treat for a second and than back up Misty gives a grin before moving a little closer to Jason herself. Holding it out twords him so he can take a bite Misty's eyes find Jason's. The fire illuminated them even more causing them to sparkle and shine.

Feeling Jason's breath against her hand Misty can feel a shiver go down her spin. Her eyes not leaving his she continues to hold the treat as a million thoughts run through her mind. Bitting her bottom lip she says no words as the silence was not awkward. It never had been with them, and it never would be.

Some Help

Jason's smile widens just a little at Misty's compliment and he glances down, just continuing to strum. He was glad she enjoyed this. So did he. It had been too long since he'd just sat and played for the simple pleasure of it. Usually he was practicing with the band, not just relaxing and letting his fingers do whatever they wanted.

Spying Misty with the stick and marshmallows, Alec hesitates before finally joining her on the ground near the small pit. He felt rather silly having never had s'mores before, but he knew what they were and... he'd always wanted to try one.

Accepting the stick and putting a marshmallow on the end of it, he holds it out near the fire, watching it go from white to golden to brown. Pulling it out before it turned black, he does as Misty had directed, albeit awkwardly, with the cracker and chocolate. Once he's got it all together though, he dares a bite, making the marshmallow and chocolate ooze out the sides.

Laughing a little he grins at the taste and nods. It was a strong enough sweet flavor for him to taste and... Misty was right. This could definitely become a favorite. "Mmm... yeah..." He nods again, swallowing his bite. "This is good stuff."

Looking back at Misty, Jason studies her in the flickering firelight. They'd known each other for quite a while now, and though Jason had never voiced his thoughts, he did think she was very beautiful. Despite her circumstances with Carson, perhaps it was the baby that held that glow in her eye. Or maybe it was just her sheer will and determination to survive and not let life get her down. Either way, Jason was glad to see her not wallowing in despair.

Noticing a sudden shy look in her gaze, his lips curl into a new grin. Maybe he'd only admit to himself that it flattered him.

Only then does he even realize that she'd asked him a question moments prior, and he pauses his guitar playing. "Sure... I'd love one, thanks."

Watching her create the sweet treat, he resumes his playing and humming until he sees that she's successfully built the s'more. Setting his guitar carefully to the side, he comes nearer the fire. Once there, though, he realizes that the s'more is already oozing in quite the delightful manner, as far as dessert was concerned, but if he was going to play his guitar any more, sticky fingers would not be a good thing.

Looking at his hands then to Misty, he gives her a sheepish grin. "If the music's over, I can handle this myself. But if you want any more songs, I'm gonna need some help eating this thing."

7/2/12

S'mores

Cleaning most of the food and plates up Misty keeps the cooler assessable in case anyone wanted more to drink along with the chips and fruit. Finding the bag with the items for smores she places the bag by the little fire they had started in the bit by the bench.

Finding her own comfortable spot on the ground crossing her legs. Listing to the soft music it was so comfortable and soothing Misty had always enjoyed Jason's talent. It was a gift he was given and such a good one at that.

"Mmmmm...now this I could listen to all night."

Looking over at Alec Misty waves him over and holds out a stick for him to roast marshmallows on. She didn't know if Alec had even had this treat but it was one of the best that someone should never pass up.

"Just put the marshmallow on the stick and roast it to your liking than take two grams, a peace of chocolate and the marshmallow in the middle and I can bet this will be the next thing you love. Jase would you like me to make you one?"

Glancing over at him Misty's smile wides a little more at he looked back at her. These nights she was really enjoying. Friendship, comfort and people who understood a common ground. Each with a different store or reason but each hurting.

Watching the light from the fire dance on Jason's face Misty searches his eyes. The dim light making them seem that much deeper. Misty had always loved his eyes and the way they shined, it was hard not to get captivated in them.

Realizing she might have been looking to long Misty looks away as she cheeks grow red. Only to turn her eyes back to Jason again in a shy manor the grin still on her lips.

Hearing what Dani was making for dinner Dalton's stomach growled as he was being pulled to the kitchen. it sounded so good and knowing first hand she could cook made it even worse. He hadn't found one thing she made he didn't like yet.

Feeling Dani's arms warp around him Dalton's arms do the same just wrapping around her gently with great care for this presouse gift. Just soaking in the moment Dalton couldn't wait for them to last forever. Leaning down and giving Dani's head a kiss Dalton smiles and nods.

"That sounds perfect for dinner. Need me to help you prepare anything?"

Giving a smile to Hunter and turning to head inside this time Katie didn't need to ask for directions she new right where they were going. Heading down the hall and noding to some of the nurses they finally get to Jeff's room. Entering Katie gives a smile and walks closer to the bed still holding the sack with the food in it.

"Hey Dad, I told you we would be back, and with some good food too. Feeling any better today?"

Looking at him he did look to have a little more color to him than yesterday though he still looked so tired. Katie hated seeing him here and couldn't wait for him to get home but at the same time she was happy here he had to relax and take it easy.

"We have stuff to make subs, fresh baked rolls, different kind of meats and anything else you could think of. Along with some of Becky potato salad."

Lulling

Dani's eyes widen for a moment, her cheeks growing crimson in color. Dalton was so utterly sweet, it almost made her cry.

With an even bigger smile, she takes the flowers and shakes her head after she'd smelled them. "If it weren't for the simple things, nothing would seem special... like you."

Standing on her tiptoes, she still has to pull Dalton down a little so she can reach him with her lips to give him a soft kiss. "Thank you." Grabbing his hand, she pulls him inside and shuts the door, then pulls him along with her to the kitchen. "I've got chicken breasts ready to put in the oven, and I thought I'd throw together some pasta salad and for dessert, there's still some of that chocolate pie I made, leftover from the other day."

Reaching up into the cupboard, she finds as vase, filling it partway with water and then setting the flowers in them, fussing over them a moment to arrange them neatly. "There."

Spinning around, she looks up at Dalton, smiling and wraps her arms around his waist to lean into him, her head barely reaching his chest. "Mmm... you make any day better."

Moving her head to look up at his face, she grins. "So how's that sound for supper. Okay?"

Hunter chuckles at Katie, though she did make him feel good. He was glad she'd enjoyed the ride and liked his company. He'd make sure it was a fun ride back to the ranch later too.

Dismounting with her, he secures both helmets to the bike before heading inside with her.

Lying in bed, Jeff stares up at the ceiling. He'd long since turned off the television, bored with the shows and not used to watching much television anyway. He wanted to be home. He wanted fresh air. He'd only been here one night but he hated it already anyway.

He'd spent a lot of time mulling over things Jay had told him... He wanted to feel better. He wanted to feel happy like he had before. And not let things get to him. Maybe Jay really didn't mind his constant teasing but... it was difficult to first think he'd made an idiot of himself, then to be told he hadn't, and try to readjust again. What was he supposed to do now? How was he supposed to act? Had he offended or embarrassed anybody else? And what about not being able to work in the barns? He'd tried, he really had. Was he truly meant to be stuck with minimal tasks and a life of never having the satisfaction of a hard day's work?

Sighing, he shifts his head around in an attempt to make the pillow more comfortable. It didn't help much. And he hated being in a hospital gown. And the bed was hard. And being hooked up to monitors was uncomfortable. And...

He sighs again and looks at the clock. He'd told Rosetta he was fine being alone but... maybe he was ready for some company... if anybody wanted to come.

The whole incident with Trooper was baffling, but after a short while, Alec was still leery but had at least stopped shaking and he didn't bolt when the big dog neared - that in itself was an improvement. And somehow, Trooper seemed to know. It was almost as if he walked with a confident air - if a dog could - as if he knew exactly what he was doing, having a method and purpose only he knew. He'd always been that way though. While he answered only to Jason, and could obey him very well, sometimes he still seemed to take his own route, making up his own mind about things.

Conversation continued at the table and laughter resumes. The meal is enjoyed and no food is put to waste. By the time it was finished, the sky was starting to grow dim. Jason retrieves his guitar from his truck and takes up a spot in the grass under a nearby tree to pluck the strings and hum, choosing some soft, lulling tunes, fit for a peaceful summer evening.

Alec sits on the picnic table and watches, secretly intrigued at how Jason could play the guitar and sing - let alone without having any music to look at. He'd never been musical himself, so it had always fascinated him. He'd known Jason played but... he hadn't known how nice it could sound. The soft notes seemed to have a strange kind of power, settling even his own nerves and relaxing him.

Still playing and singing softly, Jason's eyes find Misty's, and he smiles.

Stuck

As the whole scene unfolds with Trooper and Alec Misty stands from the table as her face goes white. She didn't dare move twords Trooper not sure of what was going on and how the dog would react to her. He wasn't listing to Jason why would he listen to her?

Looking between Jason and Alec that was all Misty could do. She was worried about Alec, she was worried about Trooper, she had no idea what was going on or what was wrong with the silly dog to make him act like this.

   "What one earth...."

Continuing to watch Misty is stunned. But finally see Trooper lick his face she becomes even more confused. What was that all about? Was that Trooped letting Alec know he was ok with him now or was he telling him if he wanted to hurt him he would but he choose not too. No one could really know why the dog behaved the way he had.

As Jason helps Alec up Misty puts her hand to her chest and sits down again shaking her head. She felt like her heart was in her throat. She new Trooper would never hurt anyone unless told but it still had startled her.

"That dog is something else I'll tell you what."

Looking back to Jason Misty gives a smile and a shake of her head. Maybe Trooper was smart and was just trying to get Alec to get use to him. Only the dog new but at least now Alec seemed a little easyer around him. Taking a bite of her burger Misty shakes her head again and grins.

Sitting on the back of the bike as it takes off Katie loves the feel of the wind that passes over her. Leaning with Hunter Katie's grin tightens a little bit but not to much. She loved the feel of going this fast. Watching everything wiz by it just gave Katie a sense of power or a sense of being free. The feeling like nothing else mattered.

Getting to the hospital and slowing down Katie was almost disappointed the ride had been so short. If the could of gone longer she would not have minded at all. At least she had heading home to look forward too.

"Nope, you didn't lose me your stuck with me."

Giving Hunter a little squeeze Katie slides off the bike and takes her helmet off waiting for Hunter to dismount as well so she could get into the backpack a little better and grab the food out.

As Dani opens the door a smile spreads across Dalton's face as he holds up the flowers. Giving a little grin he takes his sunglasses off and puts them on the top of his head his eyes giving a twinkle. Since He'd met Dani She made him feel special, she made him feel handsome and not some freak because of his size and scars. She was amazing and Dalton was happy with every moment he got to spend with her.

"Well you see I have these pretty flowers here and I wanted to give them to a pretty lady but...I don't think I should give them to you because your far to beautiful for something so simple."

Chill

Alec grits his teeth, feeling his hands shaking slightly. He didn't like being afraid, but he couldn't help it. Not after what had happened as a child. Getting bit by Trooper a while back only added to it all, and he'd just as soon walk home now and let Misty and Jason stay here together.

Feeling Misty's hand on his shoulder, he flinches before realizing it's just her. Swallowing hard, he stares into her eyes as if searching deeply for reassurance. He wasn't strong enough to deal with this right now. Not on top of everything else. He didn't want to. He couldn't. He wanted just to leave.

Instead though, he finds himself nodding numbly. Would a dog know he didn't have the same attitude as before? Or would Trooper just remember that Alec had struck his master?

"Okay," he relents quietly.

Returning to the table, he picks the far end away from Trooper, his eyes never leaving the dog, just in case.

Jason glances over his shoulder and is glad that Misty had convinced Alec to settle down. He'd forgotten entirely about that whole incident - had he remembered, he probably would have left Trooper home. In a way, he felt badly, but he also didn't want to give in just because Alec had a fear either. Trooper was a safe dog unless crossed.

"I didn't hear anybody tell me how they like their burgers," he muses loudly, asking once again as he starts the fire in the grill.

It wasn't long before the mouth-watering aroma of grilled meat wafts through the air, making even Trooper drool. At some point, the dog wanders over to Jason to watch him cook, hoping for a scrap to be dropped. Alec remains at the table, still uneasy but trying to relax, listening to Misty and Jason chat.

Soon the three were settled in for their meal after a prayer, and the food was being enjoyed. Alec really was hungrier than he thought... and perhaps his stomach wanted as much as it could get, for fear of not knowing if this luxury of regular good meals was going to last.

At some point, Jason looks over and realizes just how many onions Alec has on his burger, and he has to comment. "Want a little burger with your onions there?"

Alec grins sheepishly as he swallows his bite. "I like onions... but I can't taste them unless there's a lot."

Jason chuckles. "I suppose it's okay as long as you don't have a hot date. I don't think a stick of gum would help you."

Alec can't help a laugh and he shakes his head. "You should see me with garlic."

"Whooo boy. I don't think I want to." Jason grins and takes a bite of potato salad, throwing Misty a silly look. This fellowship was... nice. Even with Alec there. As surprising as it was... the guy really did seem to be changed. He simply wasn't who Jason remembered. "So... I brought my guitar in case we wanted any entertainment later... but I can't play and roast marshmallows at the same time..."

As the conversation circulates, Trooper finds several handouts from Jason before moving around to Misty, his leash dragging on the ground as he goes unnoticed. Seeing Misty busy talking to Jason, the dog waits only a few moments before passing her by and coming up alongside Alec.

Alec was paying little attention, having finally forgotten about Trooper even being there. Feeling a cold, wet sensation on his arm, he looks quickly to the side, only to come almost eye-to-eye with the giant dog. Reflects control him faster than thoughts, and without even realizing what he's doing, he's abandoned his food and tried to get away from the table. Unfortunately, his foot catches on the bench, sending him sprawling onto the ground.

Rolling over, it's just in time to see Trooper pouncing. With a shriek of terror, Alec covers up his face with his arms as the dog lunges at him.

It takes a moment for Jason to even realize  what's going on, and by the time he stands, Trooper is already on top of Alec, his paws at his shoulders as he stares down at him, growling.

"Trooper, back off!" Jason orders sternly.

Trooper glances over at him, but for once, he doesn't obey. Returning his gaze to Alec, his growling continues until he barks loudly.

Scared beyond anything, the bark sounds like thunder to Alec and he jumps, his arms going to try and push Trooper away. "Get off of me! Get him off! Get him off!"

"Trooper!" Jason commands. What was wrong with his dog? He shoots Misty a concerned look before finally leaving the table, now having no idea what Trooper might do, or why.

Alec's pushing does no good, and all of a sudden, there's a great weight to his stomach, knocking the air clean out of him. Lowering his arms from his face slightly, Trooper's eyes stare back at him, along with a few gleaming teeth showing. The dog's paws were on his shoulders and the rest of him spread out on top of Alec, pinning him down by simply lying on top of him.

Breathing heavily, Alec's eyes are wide. The growling had stopped, but having the huge jaws inches from his face was not comforting. "Get him off!" he cries again.

By now, Jason had reached them and was bewildered at Trooper's behavior. "Trooper, get off," he orders, grabbing the leash and giving it a yank.

Trooper turns to take the leash in his teeth, yanking right back before returning his gaze to Alec's frightened face. Jason tries to push him off, but all he receives is a growl. "What on earth..."

Alec thought for sure he was going to pass out. And as Trooper's muzzle comes even nearer, he cringes, ready to have his face mutilated. But when he feels a large tongue run up his cheek, he dares to open one eye. Trooper's head was down now, resting on Alec's chest, just watching him.

Jason has no clue what's going on, and he looks to Misty again, confused and surprised at his dog's strangeness. There was no threat though, so he just stands and watches.

Swallowing hard, Alec's pulse races as sweat runs down his face. Trembling, he tries to roll over, but Trooper gives a little woof, making him lie flat again in fear. Finally, he dares to reach up with a hand and lay it on Trooper's massive head. He was softer than Alec would have guessed, and the fur felt kind of warm under his fingers.

Trooper leans forward and gives Alec's face one last lick before standing up again and backing off. Released of the weight, Alec gasps for air and sits up, wiping his face with his shirt sleeve. Trooper cocks his head at him, before yawning and stretching lazily and going back over to the table. Looking up at Jason, Alec doesn't know whether he was still afraid, angry, relieved or what. "What did your dog just do?"

"I... have no idea." Jason blinks, trying to figure it out. "I... think he was trying to tell you to chill."

Alec scoffs. "By pinning me to the ground? He's a menace!"

"Him?"

Alec looks over to the table where Trooper was now lying in the grass and rolling around on his back. "Well what... he..."

"Come on." Jason offers Alec a hand up and nods back to the table. "Let's finish eating."

"But..." Alec follows along lamely, feeling foolish, embarrassed, still scared, and shaky. Sitting back down at the table cautiously, he keeps one eye on Trooper, who suddenly spots him back at the table. Getting up off the ground, Trooper shakes off the loose grass and saunters over to Alec, licking his chops and setting a paw on the bench next to him.

Though still scared spitless, Alec takes one of his potato chips and offers it to him. With the gentleness of a lamb, Trooper accepts the chip, crunching it happily. When it's gone though and he doesn't get another one, he nudges Alec's shoulder with his head. Alec rolls his eyes and gives him another one.

Jason looks at Misty once more, this time with a grin. Perhaps his dog knew Alec better than they even did.

Hunter smiles as he hears Katie's response, and feels her tighten her grip around him. "Hang on..." Shifting gears, the bike gives a lurch as it takes off at a higher speed. Pushing it harder, the bike surpasses the speed limit and then some. Hunter had taken Katie fast before... but not this fast.

Bending low, he makes sure he can feel Katie bend with him. The scenery flies by in a blur. His eyes zero in on the road ahead, seeing only blacktop and a solid yellow line. Something red comes into view. A pickup. A very slow pickup.

Coming up on it fast, Hunter leans to the side, smoothly taking the motorcycle into the other lane then back again, going around the slower vehicle. The wind made it feel like they really were flying. The sun warmed the air while fences and trees zipped by with enough speed to skew the colors, making it seem almost like an abstract painting was surrounding them. And this... this is what Hunter loved.

It was no surprise that they made it to town in record time, and very soon, Hunter was parking at the hospital. Cutting the motor, he puts the kickstand down and takes off his helmet. Shifting to look over his shoulder, he gives Katie a wide smile. "I didn't lose you, did I?"

"Great!" Ending the call with Dalton, Dani heads the rest of the way home. Once there, she makes sure that her shower is as quick one, knowing that it wouldn't take Dalton long to get here.

She'd just finished changing her clothes and putting her wet hair up in a bun, when she hears the door. Grinning, she trots over to it and opens it cautiously, peeking out with one eye before opening it all the way.

"Well hello there, stranger. What can I do for you?"

Fly

Hearing Jason Misty turns and gives a smile to him and a wave. Seeing Trooper with him she can't help but giggle. The big dog would never let his master come to the park for a cook out without bring him along that was for sure.

"Not late just...behind, but not by to much."

Misty had pretty much everything layed out of the table some of the items still covered so it didn't spoil in the heat and a cooler down by the end of the table with ice and different kind of drinks inside. Alec and herself had really only been there about five or ten minutes tops.

Turning her attachen back to Alec Misty can see the look of fear on his face. Suddenly remembering Alec and his fear of dogs Misty can feel a strange pang in her heart. Though she can't tell Jason to bring Trooper home, or keep him by the car. That just wouldn't be far to him either.

"I think you've changed a bit since Trooper met you last. I don't think he would be likely to attack you again unless you provoke him."

Coming up next to Alec Misty lays a hand on his shoulder. Looking between him and Jason for a moment she looks back to Alec and gives a soft smile and a nod. She couldn't imagine having a fear so strong against something like he did, so she couldn't start to understand how he was feeling but she did her best to grant him a little comfort.

   "It'll be alright..ok?"

Getting her shoes on and than heading to the mess hall for some items for lunch Katie goes back outside and helps Hunter put them on the bike. Once everything was set and putting her helmet on Katie gets on the back of the bike and gets settled.

   "Let's do this!"

Katie exclaims with enthusiasm. She loved the feeling of being on the bike, she loved the feeling of being free. She loved it since the moment she'd gotten on Jason's bike and rode with him. In that moment a flash goes through Katie's mind about riding with Jason, there kiss...those had been the days for sure. Shaking her head as she could feel a small tear escape she was happy Hunter had his back to her so he couldn't see.

   "Let's fly."

Wrapping her arms around Hunter and leaning in close to him Katie was ready. She was ready to feel the wind and the rush.

A bit of color comes to Dalton's cheeks as she shakes his head and laughs. Dani sure did know how to bring out the color in his cheeks but he didn't mind it made him feel good in a way to know she could and that she meant what she said.

"Alright let me get cleaned up a little bit and I will be right over."

Hanging up the phone Dalton gets up from the couch and heads to the bathroom. Splashing some cold water on his face and running a comb through his hair Dalton heads to the bedroom to change his shirt, and splash a little cologne on.

Finally finished he figured this was the best it was going to get for right now. Heading out it doesn't take him long to get to Dani's making a quick stop at a store to get some flowers. Making his way up the steps he gives a knock on the door and waits the pretty pink lily's in hand.

Cargo

Jason thinks for a moment then shakes his head. "Naw... well... if you see any cream soda, I've been craving it this week for some reason." He grins. "Just don't tell Rick. He's been on my case about my sugar."

Getting back to work wasn't easy, but at least now Jason had something to look forward to tonight. Reports for Reese were finished, a meeting with Con and Gunner was accomplished, and phone calls made. When it was finally time to quit for the day, Jason was glad. He felt more tired than normal tonight... maybe it was just stress. But he was ready to relax for the evening.

Heading home, he showers and changes clothes, throwing on his knee brace for the rest of the day. He hadn't worn it at work... but should have, and now he was paying for it with muscle ache. He wasn't going to let that stop him though. Rick might not be happy with all he was doing while still recovering but without the foreign substance running through his veins, healing seemed to come a whole lot easier lately.

Foreign substance...

Jason looks himself in the bathroom mirror, his comb hovering above his wet hair. Like a flashback, he was suddenly in the woods at the ranch, exhausted as his sugar crashed. He'd thought it was just a combination of his low sugar and suppressed memories... but that had been the beginning. The beginning of one of the hardest, most stressful roads Jason had known. Meeting Katie had set the deadly game in motion.

Glancing down, he turns over his hand to see the circular scar on his palm. It was the only thing that was left. The forever-reminder. And for him... it was a reminder of mostly pain.

Shaking his head, he brings his mind back into focus and finishes cleaning up. Socks, shoes, Trooper, wallet, keys... he was ready to go. Hitting the store for the meat, he then heads back towards the park.

Alec had yet again been somewhat surprised at Misty's invitation to join her and Jason at the park for the evening. Maybe somewhere he just expected her to grow tired of him being around, although he'd tried really hard to do some household tasks for her today too. At least he was feeling better - a cough lingered and he still tired easily, but overall he was on the mend from being sick.

Sitting at the picnic table with Misty, waiting for Jason, Alec's eyes roam the park. It seemed to be a pretty quiet evening, which was surprising since it was so nice out. Nibbling on a potato chip he felt a little awkward with the silence, but maybe silence was better than talking about things he didn't want to. He and Misty hadn't been here long, but already his stomach was starting to growl. He'd skipped lunch... that could be part of it.

Glancing over at Misty, he studies her for a moment. She sure was handling this whole thing well. With divorcing Carson, that is. She seemed so cool and collected... yet Alec would never say she was cold. What made her so confident? So strong? What made her able to help someone like him, when she was going through hard times herself? And again, Alec felt humbled. He wasn't worth any of her effort.

Jason pulls into the gravel lot of the park and shuts off the truck engine. Grabbing the package of hamburger and the small bag of charcoal, he slides out before clipping a leash to Trooper and letting him out as well. The giant dog hops out and yawns, taking a moment to stretch. Not being allowed at TJY anymore, getting out at all was a treat and he looks at Jason expectantly, curious as to what they were doing here.

"C'mon, Bud. Let's go find Misty and Alec."

Trooper obediently falls into step at Jason's heel, taking in the sights and sounds of the park with keen attentiveness.

Spotting Misty and Alec at a nearby table, Jason heads in that direction, coming up to them from the side. It looked like Misty had everything else ready - they just needed the meat to get cooked now. "Hey, guys. Don't tell me I'm late again."

Having still been lost in thought at the table, Alec hadn't even seen Jason approaching. Turning to see him, it's only now that he notices Trooper there as well. Standing quickly, he detangles himself from the picnic table bench and backs up several feet. "Aw no... uh-uh... Nobody told me that dog was going to be here."

Jason rolls his eyes and sighs looking to Misty with annoyance then back to Alec. "He's fine as long as you are."

"Well I'm not fine!" Adrenaline was already surging through Alec's veins. There were very few things he feared in life, but make no mistake, he was still petrified of large dogs - especially this one.

"Come on, Alec," Jason prompts. "I'm not gonna leave him in the truck and I can't take him home now."

"Look, I still got the scars and a numb spot on my ankle from that dog!" Alec remembered all to well, the feeling of Trooper's teeth sinking into his leg. He hadn't even been able to walk himself to the infirmary and he'd bled all over the place. It hadn't been a pleasant experience.

"That was only because you got riled," Jason counters. "Cool it and Trooper won't have anything to get upset about."

Trooper looks between his master and Alec, sensing the rising tension and he gives a low woof.

Alec jumps and shakes his head. "Uh-uh."

Jason shortens the dog's leash and quietly tells him to sit. Trooper seems to question him for a moment, but then obediently lowers his haunches to the grass while keeping his eye on what was happening. "See?" Jason gives his head a pat. "He's fine. Now come on. Quiet being a such a sissy." Laying the leash over the picnic table, he takes the meat to the grill that was a couple feet away. "Alright... how does everybody like their burgers?"

Alec's mind had long since strayed from food, and hunger was now the least of his worries. Remaining where he was, he looks to Misty, the fear still in his eyes.

Stepping into Katie's bunkhouse, Hunter's senses are met with the sweet fragrances, lingering after her shower. "Mmm..." He takes a deep breath. "You smell good."

Grinning, he leans on the doorframe as she puts on her shoes. Her comment about the bike just makes his grin widen even more. "Who said anything about going fast?" His quirked eyebrow accompanies the humor that danced in his eyes. She knew him too well to think he'd take the road slowly.

Stepping back outside with her, he laughs. "I was born ready. Come on."

After retrieving the food Katie wanted to take to Jeff, Hunter helps secure it in his backpack, which he lets Katie wear since she'd be sitting in back. He was glad he'd opted to bring his extra helmet too.

Mounted up, he starts the engine and waits until he feels Katie settled and hanging on before he steers slowly down the driveway  and out onto the road. The road was going to be nice and straight for a good long while - that much he'd observed yesterday.

"Alright, Cargo..." He grins as he speaks into the helmet's mic. "You wanna feel what it's like to fly?"

Dani giggles as she gets into her car, Dalton's compliment making her feel so good. She'd been told that she sounded good on the radio before, but hearing it from him was special.

Hearing his enthusiasm to come over, she laughs again, starting up her car. "You can come whenever you want. I'm just now headed home. If you want to come right over, we can hang out while I fix supper. Either that, or you name the time and I'll have supper ready by then. I don't care one way or the other."

She checks her mirrors before backing out of her parking space and aims for the street. "No... that's a lie. I do care. I want you for as long as I can get you." She grins, knowing that if he were sitting here, she'd spy some color in his cheeks.

Hit the Road

Misty gives a small laugh and a nod. She liked that idea, and having plans for tomorrow night too was good. She didn't mind where they had or what movie they saw either. But she would think about it and at least try to figure out something.

"Alright, I'll pick where we eat but maybe we both can pick the movie. I've never been to good at movie picking, nor do I even know whats playing."

Giving a smile to Jason Misty stands and folds her one arm across herself. She had a feeling tonight would be a good one. Cook out, fellowship, maybe roast some marshmallows. It just felt...good to relax. To her it sounded fun and right now, Jason, herself and Alec well all three of them needed it.

"Well I better get back to work. If your going to get the meet tonight I will grab rolls and stuff. Anything special you want for chips or side dishes or stuff to drink?"

Hearing the knock and opening the door Katie runs her hand through her still wet hair. The soft smell of soap, and shampoo exits the room, but welcomes someone in at the same time. Giving a smile Katie waves Hunter in.

"Come on in I just have to throw my shoes on and than we should be good to go."

At the option of taking his bike Katie things for a long moment. It was very temping for sure and she did like bike rides. Maybe this would be a little extra way to let herself go and just...be without any worry.

"I think...taking the bike might be a fine option if I do say so myself. At least we would get the food to dad quicker before it gets cold."

Katie gives a cheese grin. Standing she goes to her night stand and grabs her keys, wallet and her phone putting them into her pockets. She hoped Jeff was in a better mood today and he would enjoy the food they were going to bring him.

   "Alright...ready to hit the road?"

Seeing Dani's number Dalton gives a smile leaning back on the couch again. Today had been his day off and he'd been pretty much just been lazing around the house. It was to hot to really do anything else.

"Hey Babe. I heard you on the radio. You sounded great!"

Looking at the clock on the wall Dalton's stomach gives a growl. Thinking for a long moment. But only just a moment and nothing longer. To pass up dinner with Dani would make him a fool. She made some of the best food he had ever tasted.

"As long as your cooking I'll be there. What time you want me over?"

7/1/12

Chariot

Jason's eyebrows rise ever so slightly at Misty's suggestion. They were still just hanging out as friends here, right? This wasn't turning into something else so soon... right?

Right. It wasn't. Jason was bummed. Misty was bummed. And together they were able to smile. Period.

He nods his agreement. "Sounds good to me. I'll get enough meat for the three of us for tonight then. And... for tomorrow... you get to pick where we eat and what movie. I can't argue with the baby on what to eat, and I don't know what movie you'd like but I'll watch anything."

He grins, glad that he had plans for the next two evenings. He'd already hit up Sandy and the guys but they all seemed to be busy this week.

"Got it." Hunter  gives Katie a thumbs up, feeling a little more confident now about where he'd be headed and what was going on next.

After returning the glasses to the kitchen then finding himself in the barn again, Hunter ran into Eric, who promptly roped him into helping move some hay bales to a different spot. Hunter didn't mind a bit and pitched right in until he realized what time it was. He still needed a shower before heading to town.

Released from work, he heads quickly to his bunkhouse for a shower and clean clothes, throwing back on his clean boots and running a quick comb through his wet hair. Once satisfied, he aims for Katie's bunk, getting turned around just once in the row of bunkhouses, but finally finding the right one.

"Knock, knock." Hunter taps his knuckles on the door. "Your chariot awaits." How true. It was her car. "Unless you wanted to take the bike..."

"...And this is Dani Banks, wishing you a great evening. Now back to your favorite tunes as I turn things over to Bud Plowman who's got something to say about bananas and dolphins."

Carson smiles faintly as the radio kicks over to some easy listening music. Since Dani had quit working here, he'd heard absolutely nothing from her. She didn't return his phone calls. She never stopped by. He only knew she was still around by seeing her car drive by occasionally. He was glad she'd gotten a job - he wasn't surprised that she'd gone back to radio work after that's what she'd been doing in California. At least he could still hear her voice and know she was okay.

Hitting the switch to kick back to music, Dani takes off her headphones and runs a hand through her hair to straighten it out.

"Sounding good," Bud compliments from his seat.

"Hmm? Oh, thanks." This whole job had actually been quite a blessing. Dani had struggled to find another suitable job after giving Carson notice, but she'd finally found that this radio station needed another DJ. Having already had some experience, it just took one trial run for her to be hired. She didn't always like the music they played, but the people were nice and the hours were okay. The pay would at least let her keep the apartment with Libby anyway.

Standing, she grabs her purse and pats Bud on the shoulder. "Don't put 'em to sleep - they're on the drive home."

Bud laughs and puts on his headphones. "Me? Put them to sleep? Never!"

Grinning, Dani heads from the room, down the hall, bids Trudy goodnight and aims for her car in the parking lot. Pulling out her phone as she walks, she waits for Dalton to answer. "Hey, good lookin'. Did you say something about coming over for supper tonight, or was it my imagination?"

Heat

Misty was really happy that Jason trusted her. She wasn't quite sure herself if Alec had changed or not but seeing him the other night so down, so sick, there was just something in his eyes that told Misty he needed someone. She wouldn't put her guard down because she new better than that, but she had to at least give him a chance. He was family after all no matter what.

"Well how about we do a cook out tonight the three of us and than maybe tomorrow we can do something special together."

After saying what she had Misty could feel a little bit of heat come to her own cheeks. Her comment sounded a lot more romantic than she had intended it too. Just giving a sheepish grin she new there was no way to take it back now. All she could do was just go with the flow of things.

"Maybe dinner and a movie if there is anything good out. I haven't been to a movie in ages."

Hearing Hunter's comment Katie couldn't help but laugh. The tree of how everyone was connected was a big mess and sometimes hard for people to understand. That was the life though of having The Agency on your tail.

"I know it kind of goes in a circle instead of branching out. Thanks for trying to understand or at least asking questions to understand."

Going back over to the fence post where he glass was Katie picks it up taking another sip. In a little while where would she be? She might as well make it easy on Hunter. She had to clean up anyways. At the moment she was spotted with water, shampoo and mud.

"I should be in my bunk I'm in number thirteen. I'm going to clean up a little bit myself and just relax till we leave."

Heat

Jason leans back in his chair and studies Misty for several moments. He knew she was just trying to do what was right, and he knew that she'd always wanted to help Alec. Her heart was in the right place - of that, he had no doubt. But was she being wise?

"I guess... if it were me... I wouldn't go to that much trouble. But then... my hearts not quite as big as yours either." He gives her a little smile. "I suppose you can't be a fool for acting like Jesus. And... I have to admit, Alec was kinda fun last night. Do I think he's changed?" He shrugs. "That has yet to be proven to me. But it's not my choice if he stays with you. If you feel strongly about it then... I trust your judgment. I don't necessarily trust him, but I trust you."

Thinking for a couple moments, he nods. "I don't mind if you invite him to the park tonight. I... guess I kinda like it sometimes being just you and me..." Why a little bit of heat crawls up the back of his neck, he isn't sure. "...but whether I trust Alec or not, I'm sure he needs some good friends."

"Catching up sounds great." Jay gives Katie one last squeeze before finally letting her go. "I'll get settled in, and you two go see your dad then. I'll be around when you get back."

Watching Jay leave, Hunter grins a little at Katie. "Ya know... I have to tell you... this is kinda a crazy family with all these weird connections... but everyone sure does seem nice."

Finishing up his lemonade, he picks up both glasses to take them back to the kitchen. "Where do I find you to go to the hospital in a while?"
