In Love

Hunter rolls his eyes. "Well there's your problem. Chocolate must be consumed daily." He winks at her. "You're welcome. I think you're worth it."

Although the late evening had been fun, reality was still in control, forcing the hands of time to turn too quickly. In obedience, Hunter and Katie were back on the road after finishing their treat. Hunter took the ride back a little slower this time. Rather than running away from something, he was returning to it, and that slowed his speed. As the lights of town came into view, Hunter again wondered if this was it. Was this just a taste of enjoyment that would not be again, or was it just the beginning?

As it turned out, Hunter would see Katie several more times. A week later, he called her for another late lakeside stroll. After that, she called him once and they again had dinner where talk mostly revolved around both of them venting but still enjoying each other's company. An afternoon at the lake would follow, along with an after-lunch ice cream another day.

Hunter knew he was walking a fine line with Jason in the background. Though he and Katie only met when Jason was busy, Hunter knew there was a chance that no matter how innocent his time with Katie was, it could potentially cause problems. But something about her kept his concerns at bay. She was fun. Quiet. Nice. In a way, she reminded Hunter of what he'd been missing out on - good clean fun. She didn't come on to him. She didn't expect him to spend the night at her place. She didn't go for the partying and drinking. Even when it was just the two of them, Hunter never had to question her intentions or motives. She was feeling left out and needed a friend. He wasn't feeling left out of anything, but did need a friend. Together they seemed to give each other what they most wanted for the time being - simple, plain companionship.

In the process, they naturally got to know each other more. Katie would tell him more about herself and he began to understand a little more about the whole connection thing with Jason. She continued to vent about Jason as well, and Hunter asked her again if she thought he was cheating on her, but didn't bring it up again when he saw how sad that thought made her. He shared more about himself and where he'd been since Break Out. He told her about how he'd liked Alice and why he'd been so upset with Kyle. And he apologized to her for hitting someone who was her friend.

Though unplanned and perhaps a little confusing, Hunter started spending a little less time with his buddies and more time alone. His pictures were finally added to his shelf and his box emptied. Now having Katie as a friend, that helped him avoid any more public disturbances for fear of the Elite arresting him again and Katie deciding she didn't want to see him. He still hung out at the races and frequented the bars though, still struggling to discover where he belonged. Perhaps his biggest struggle of all, though, was fighting what was deep inside of him - the desire to let go of his hurts and return to being the man he'd once been - the man with a heart for God, with conviction of right and wrong, with purity, and with integrity. But where he sat now was on the edge of a dangerous vortex. One wrong step would cause him to fall into a place from which there would be no return. And every day, he teetered precariously on the edge, despite his conscious gnawing away at his gut.

Jason stood at the porch screen door, his fingers hooked in his jeans pockets as he stared out at the rain.

"Earth to Jason..."

He turns quickly and grins at Sandy. "You guys decided or what?"

"UNO!" Rusty holds up a worn pack of cards as he, his girlfriend Theresa, and Will sat at the kitchen table of his house.

Jason rolls his eyes. "Do you know how much UNO I've played in my life?"

"Not enough, for sure," Rusty quips. "Come on. I'll let you win the first round."

Jason looks back at Sandy with wide eyes. "He really thinks I need his help to win."

"Apparently." Sandy laughs. "How about you prove him wrong."

"I'll say." Jason wanders back to the table and sits down, taking a sip of his pop. "Alright, Rusty. Deal 'em up." He'd taken an impromptu day off work today, starting out with the morning spent with his mom and Kaylee, then coming over to Rusty's for lunch and some games. He had vacation time piling up, so he'd been spending it little by little lately. Some days off were sick days when his knee didn't feel like cooperating, and other days off were vacation to spend with his mom, or his friends, though usually his socializing with friends came after work in the evenings. He'd spent time with them once or twice a week, usually just hanging out for pizza, games, or just sitting around and gabbing. It was relaxing for Jason - something that helped him get his mind off his everyday worries. Being around old friends was a little taste of what he'd had as a kid - it was like experiencing part of his childhood over again and he liked that. Maybe because he'd never been able to socialize as much as he'd wanted while in high school. He'd always been too busy with Austin and TJY. It almost felt like he was getting a kind of second chance to just hang out with friends. Texting Rusty and Sandy had become fun too, giving him communication even when he wasn't hanging out with them, and one of them always wound up making him laugh about something.

Every day Jason recognized his feelings a little bit more. It was slow, but he was beginning to finally realize Rick was right - it would just take time. He was feeling more positive things lately though, and that was encouraging.

As far as he and Katie were concerned, he really wasn't sure what to think. The last couple weeks, they'd seemed.... distant. He knew she was bothered by him spending time with his other friends, but he was just trying to find a piece of himself again and wasn't doing anything wrong. He wished she would understand that, but she didn't seem to. He knew she loved him and wanted to spend time with him, but somewhere along the way, he'd lost himself... his individuality. For so long he and Katie had been almost one... it was always the two of them... always the pair. Jason didn't feel like just Jason anymore, and getting out and doing different things was helping him find out who he really was again. It was a new experience, and something he hadn't realized he'd needed until now.

He loved Katie for sure, and didn't want things to change between them. He knew she was having a hard time with her own feelings too, so, in a way, he hoped that him spending a little time away from her would help her as it was helping him. They didn't talk about it though. It was just an unspoken topic that neither wanted to speak of, lest they feel more tension than they already did.

One thing that did bother Jason though, was knowing that Katie had seen Hunter several more times. Though he trusted her, he didn't like it. He was always with a group of friends... Katie was spending time alone with Hunter. After their first little tense exchange though, Jason had let it lie. Was something going on between her and Hunter? He hoped not. He didn't think so. He trusted Katie more than that. But it still didn't set right with him. She'd seemed to have pulled away from him a little bit lately, and deep down, he'd wondered if it had anything to do with Hunter. For now though, he just let things go out of respect.

It would all work out. Of that, Jason was confident. The more time that passed, the more they would feel, and the more they'd get themselves back on track. It would just take time. He would feel better. Katie would feel better. And they would come out stronger in the end.

...Right?

Carson fiddles with some numbers, leaning on the counter at Mom and Pop's. It was a strangely quiet day - maybe because of the rain. He wouldn't complain though - they'd had a good week so far and one down day wouldn't put them in a jam. For the moment, he was here alone. Aerith would be coming in later, and he'd let Dani go for a while since things were so slow. Now he was just catching up on some paperwork while thinking of the changes he wanted to make around here. Anything to keep his mind off less than pleasant subjects.

"I'll probably go home in a few days." Cindy sits in Con's cubicle, just taking a few minutes to talk with an old friend.

Con nods, balancing Kaylee on his knee. She was quite content to snuggle up to him, never fearing his size. "Have you seen Trey again?"

"No." Cindy sighs. "I... thought he might call me but he hasn't. I promised myself I wouldn't push him though so I've stayed back. It's been a good trip though. I needed some time with Jason and I had at least one good time with Trey so I can't complain. It's been nice getting away from the ranch for a while."

Con studies her face, only now realizing how tired she looked. These past few months had really done a number on her, and he wished there was something he could do. "Will you stay in Texas then?"

Cindy shrugs. "I'm really not sure. I have a house there... the ranch families are my family too now... but I don't like being away from Jason - and Trey now either. My house is full of memories I'd rather not face. I don't know if that will ever go away. But..." She takes a deep breath. "I owe it to myself and to Wes to at least give it a fair try. If after a while I just can't take it, I might consider moving back here. I'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime though, at least I don't have to worry about Jason dying or not knowing my other son."

"And Kaylee keeps you on your toes." Con grins and bounces Kaylee around, making her giggle.

Cindy laughs. "That she does."

It was Jared's turn to feel heat in his face, although he does laugh. "Now wait a minute," he chides Grace. "You gave me permission to flirt with you, but nobody said anything about the other way around."

He takes a sip of grapefruit juice and grimaces. "Okay - that one goes on the B list."

Eying Grace with amusement, his gaze roams her face until landing on her own eyes. "For the record, you can flirt with me all you want. I gotta have something to help me with my ego, right? I mean, that got run over by a bus too."

Taking a nibble of a chicken finger and murmurs his approval, accompanied by a sigh of content. "I think I'm in love. Can I take you home to be my cook?"

"Competition, eh?" Eric laughs. "You're not gonna get much from me, I'll tell you that right now. I've been the worst player in the family for years."

Dylan quirks an eyebrow. "Good, then maybe I stand a chance."

Surprised to hear any humor from Dylan, it takes Eric just a moment to laugh again. "I imagine you do at that. We should have teams just so I have a chance."

"Well you're not gonna be on mine." Dylan's mouth twitched. "I think Ashlee would have you beat hands down."

"And that's why Stacy's going to help me out." Eric gives Stacy a nudge. "Right?"

Zone!

Following Hunter back to her own belongings Katie slips her socks and shoes on. In a way this almost felt like a fairy tail was ending. The only difference was She was with a good friend, and her prince charming was at home. Maybe Katie had taken this whole thing on wrong, maybe things would get better if she just gave it time.

Seeing Hunter hold the bottle out to her and the candy bar than his comment that followed Katie couldn't help but laugh. Taking the offered candy bar and the bottle of pop Katie takes a sip than hands it back. Unwrapping the candy bar and starting to eat it she couldn't help but murmur of satisfaction.

"It's been ages since I have had chocolate. Or it seems likes its been ages anyways. Thanks Hunter."

Ashlee thinks for a long moment. A movie sounded like fun, but mini golf sounded just as good. It was hard to try and deiced between the two things. She new both of them would be fun, but what one to choose.

"Awwww....Mini Golf. I think that would be prefect. Than we could all chat and there could be a little competition in there too."

It would give them more time to chat, and spend time with each other. A movie would be nice but they would sit in quiet and in a way that would kind of defeat the reason for going out. So mini golf it was.

As Jared eats one things Grace puts out another, Fruit, Juice, and moves into some lunch items, little sandwiches, little burgers, chicken fingers so much more. She enjoyed watching Jared try each thing and the faces that fold stores.

And his eyes...Grace can't help for a moment to get lost in them. They were deep and full of emotions, they lit up his whole face even if they seemed to have lost hope at the moment. She could only imagine what they must be like when he was happy.

Realizing she was maybe looking into Jared's eyes for a little to long and he had just asked her a question Grace gives a blink before looking down quickly her cheeks getting a crimson tone.

"Umm...sometimes yes, no to this existent though. I dont know Jared there is just something about you. Maybe its your eyes...maybe I want to see how good they look when they sparkle. Just one of those things I guess that can't be explained."

Looking up at Jared though her cheeks were still red there was a smile on her face. She felt a bit silly though she didn't know why. Nore could she believe she had just rambles off everything she had to him. This was definitely out of her zone.

Cooties

Hunter sighs deeply and lets his eyes travel up to Katie. "I suppose reality demands a look at the clock. I think all clocks should be gathered in one pile and A-bombed." He knew they should at least start heading back towards the bike. He was enjoying himself, but after all, he was with someone else's girl... alone... late at night. The last thing he needed was an irate boyfriend coming after him.

Getting to his feet, he brushes the sand off his shirt and jeans. "Okay... if we must."

Ambling back the way they'd come, his pace is much slower this time. It was dark but at least the moonlight was bright enough to see enough details in the sand not to trip and fall or step on driftwood. Getting back to their shoes and socks, he puts them back on, lacing his boots back up again. Once they were back at the bike though, he doesn't mount up right away. Instead, he goes for the treat he'd bought earlier.

Retrieving his Mountain Dew and the two Milky Way candy bars, he takes a long swig of the drink and nods with satisfaction. He then holds out a candy bar and the bottle to Katie. "I promise I didn't backwash and I don't have cooties."

Dylan realizes that Stacy's eyes were aimed at this end of the table and he exchanges a quick glance with Ashlee. "I'm... just along for the ride," he responds. A movie sounded okay. Miniature golf sounded kinda fun. But he really did feel that he was just tagging along and whatever the others decided would be okay with him.

He shrugs. "I'm okay with whatever Ash wants to do."

Eric leans back in his seat and grins. He knew a movie would be enjoyed if that's what was chosen, but miniature golf might provide more interaction and result in more fun for the group. Ultimately, it was up to Ashlee since it was her birthday though. "What'dya say, birthday girl?"

"Hey, Grace," Jared greets, perking up as she enters the room. After she started on his legs then brought him the food, his eyes widen. "I didn't think you were kidding but... you weren't kidding." He chuckles. "Good thing I passed on the oatmeal this morning."

Taking a nibble of bacon, he smiles. "Mmm... Bacon had to have been one of my weaknesses."

Glancing up at Grace, his eyes, were a bit dark from a hopelessness that had begun to settle over him. But despite the shadows, there was a depth there that held a world of potential just waiting to be released. A flicker of spirit...life. "So are you this nice to all your patients?"

"Reese - Alec's outside city limits."

"Aw for crying out loud." Reese glares at his phone as Hal called him on the intercom. "Do you know anything else?"

"Nope. I think he's probably on his motorcycle. He's stopped though, right outside town, so I don't know what he's doing."

"Idiot." Reese sighs. "Okay, thanks." Collecting his thoughts, he dials Wyatt but can't reach him. This time he dials Gunner. "Brent?"

Gunner cringes. Reese only called him that if he was in a bad mood. "Yeah?"

"Connect with Hal then go pick up Alec. He's outside town."

"He's not supposed to be?"

"No!" Reese's exasperation is evident. "He knows good and well he's not supposed to be outside town. We let him roam free and he finally pushed it too far. I want him back here now."

"Okay, okay." Gunner grabs his badge and chain and slings it around his neck. "I'm on my way."

Alec sits on his motorcycle, parked along the shoulder of the main highway. He sat ten feet on the other side of the city limits sign, staring off down the road at passing traffic. Holding his helmet, the breeze combed his hair. He didn't feel it though. He was waiting. Just... waiting.

The past week had felt as if he'd been running in place - never accomplishing anything, but feeling utterly exhausted anyway. Nothing felt right. Nothing was anything more than miserable. He'd gotten word that Tal was still in the hospital but recovering well. Surprisingly, he was glad to hear it. But all it did was remind him what a wretched being he was. So here he sat... awaiting what he deserved.

It wasn't long before he sees a black vehicle pull up behind him. Watching in his mirror, he notes that it's Gunner. He sighs but stays seated.

Confused, Gunner exits the SUV and approaches slowly, finding this whole thing very peculiar. He almost expected some kind of ambush. "Alec?"

Alec turns his head slightly. "Here to take me in?"

"Yeah, well, that's pretty much the case." Gunner searches his eyes. "What's the deal?"

Alec shrugs. "Gonna cuff me?"

Gunner's apprehension lingers. Why was Alec so calm? It was almost scary. "I don't think I need to do that. If you're willing to go in, I'll let you ride and I'll follow you."

"Okay." Alec dons his helmet and starts the engine.

Still confused, Gunner just tries to shrug it off. Maybe Alec was always this weird and he just hadn't noticed. Once inside the vehicle again, he waits for Alec to leave first, then follows him back into town and to TJY...

"So what is it this time, huh?" Reese glares at Alec across his office desk. "Just decided to play hooky so one of my men would waste his time coming after you? Do you think this is some kind of joke?"

Alec's eyes remain on the floor and he says nothing.

"If you want me to take your bike away, I can," Reese threatens. "You won't get as far on foot. I know you came by it through under-the-table deals but I turned a blind eye because I wanted to let you have some freedom. But this is ridiculous. What were you doing anyway?!"

Alec finally raises his dim eyes. "I broke the rule. You gonna report it and have me sent to prison?"

"For sitting alongside the road and wasting our time? Unfortunately, that would seem a rather petty reason, don't you think?"

Alec shrugs. "A rule is a rule. The judge wouldn't be too happy to know I'd done that."

"No, he wouldn't. But I'm not going to report it."

"Why not? I thought you were honest."

"I am honest! I'm also trying to save your hide! Can you not see I care?!"

Alec jumps a little at Reese's loud tone. "If it's just your program you're worried about, I'm sure you can find some way of making it so the program doesn't have to end even if you put me away. Obviously I'm a unique case, and besides, you already have Carson and Gage and Phinox, and even Misty, as proof of rehabilitation."

Reese furrows his brow, just not understanding. "You make it sound as if you want to go to prison."

"It'd be better than this."

Reese was still confused. He didn't know why all of a sudden Alec would choose prison over this. But if that was the case, then keeping him here was a better punishment. "Fine. Then you stay and let this be a lesson to you."

"You can't keep me here if I keep breaking the law."

Reese gets to his feet and leans halfway across his desk, wearing a stern glare. "Alec Banks, if you're trying to bring this program down by getting yourself thrown into prison, then I got news for you - it isn't going to work. This is just a game to you. But you're losing. Guys like you don't win. You just keep playing til we tell you to stop. That's the way it works. Do I make myself clear?"

Alec swallows hard. "Perfectly."

Menu

Still leaning against the rock Katie breaths deep still catching her breath. She wondered if the small things like looking at stars, going for a fun, playing with seashells where the same things in life she'd let pass her by. Not having a connection now they took on a whole new meaning. Maybe all she and Jason needed was some time to slow down, to do something special together, just them.

"I think we both need to take more time to look at them and remember life is to fast to just ignore the small things."

Finally leaning away from the rock and looking over at Hunter Katie smiles. It was getting later...than it already was but she had, had such a good night. In a way she didn't want it to end. Spending time with Hunter as a friend was nice and she wondered would this be the last? If it was, it was fun while it lasted.

"It's getting late, you think we should call it a night or wast a few more hours?"

Once everyone had ordered Stacy looks around the table again and gives a smile. She'd been paying attachen to Dylan and Ashlee but not as atently as one would think. She wanted to give them there own place to chat and have a nice time. So far she though she'd done a good job.

"So, after this would you guys like to see a movie, or go mini golfing or something?"

Stacy new it sounded kind of kidish to say it the way she had but thats not how she meant it. She just wanted Ashlee to have a nice day and have some fun with Dylan. Sometimes acting like a kid was the best way specially if you missed out on that part of your life.

Walking down the hall holding a brown paper bag Grace smiled to the drs and nurses and she walked. She been up late last night cooking and putting a few things together for Jared today. She didn't mind she never fell asleep till one or two anyways so it didn't bother her to much.

   "Good Morning Jared."

Entering the room Grace slightly closes the door behind her just leaving enough room that it wasn't closed, but no one could see in least she get in trouble for feeding Jared stuff he new she shouldn't.

Setting the bag of food down and removing her jacket Grace sets to work setting everything up on Jared's legs like she had the day before. This would also help the time pass quickly for him so he wasn't bored out of him mind.

Finished with that She goes to grab the tray she could set a few things down on before pulling out a place. The portions for each item were not big but that was so Jared could try everything and not get full.

"Alright first up we have...Eggs, Bacon, Toast, Sausage and a little pancake. I figured we could start with some breakfast food. Also have some Milk, OJ, Apple juice, and grapefruit juice."

Foot O.o

"Okay.... See ya tomorrow." Jared gives Grace a little wave. Once she was gone, he leans his head back into his pillow, and wonders if all that had really happened. Why was Grace being so nice to him? Not that he minded... On the contrary, he had really enjoyed her company today. It was just interesting that she was giving him this much attention. Already he was looking forward to tomorrow. And it was the first time since being in here that he was looking forward to anything.

The next morning, being woken early again doesn't seem quiet as bad, and instead of trying to go back to sleep, he flips on the television to stay awake.

Eric own face flushed crimson as he choked on another laugh. He didn't know if he was all that special, or if what Ashlee said was true, but the girl's innocent statement, coupled with Stacy's embarrassment was too much not to laugh at. His foot taps Stacy's under the table, letting her know he was more amused than anything else, and she need not be embarrassed. He was sure he wasn't the only man she'd paid attention to, but it was probably time to end this conversation.

Spying their waiter, he waves him over, trying to control his laughter. "I think we're ready to order now.... And if we're not, we're ordering anyway."

Once they've all ordered, things quiet down a little bit. The restaurant was starting to fill up now, so the chatter and noises around them were enough to fill any silences. Eric runs his finger around the rim of his water glass, a slight grin still visible on his lips. He'd let Stacy pick the next topic though - he wasn't going to be to blame for another subject that might get out of hand again. Although... it was still funny.

"Oh my... and I only wanted one nice thing. I should have asked for more." Hunter laughs and just stays lying where he is, still trying to catch his breath. "I'm not sure me being me is really a good thing though. At least you might find some opposition on that one."

A shooting star suddenly zips across the dark sky and Hunter smiles. "Been a while since I've taken time to watch the stars... I guess I kinda miss it."

Truth

Trying to keep up with Hunter and seeing the rocks coming quickly Katie was thankful. It was a hard task to keep up with someone and laugh at the same time. Sinking down next to Hunter Katie could feel her lungs burning but in a way it felt kind of nice.

   "Something nice huh? Lets see..."

Katie brings a finger to her lips to think for a long moment about what to say. Though it really didn't take her long to come up with something letting Hunter just hang on seemed to be part of the fun.

"Your funny, nice, good sense of a humor, and...your Hunter."

Seeing Dylan's grin it makes Ashlee's grow even larger. He tried to hide it but it slipped though anyways and she saw it. But she wouldn't bring to much attachen to it now least she embarrass him.

"I have to say I've never seen her like this around someone before so I am not sure. You must be special Eric."

   "ASHLEE..."

Stacy's face gets even more red at her daughters comment. Though she wasn't upset with her she was still embarrassed.

   "What Mom its the trust!!"

"Well that might be true but you don't have to tell everyone."

Picking up her bag and slinging it over her shoulder Grace turns and gives a nod to him again. Smiling she was ready to drop her stuff off and head to the store to see what she could come up with.

"Tomrrow it is...we can do the food testing while we work on your legs."

Giving a knowing nod she heads for the door once again.

"I'll see you bright and early."

Often?

Jared just shakes his head, still finding it hard to believe that Grace was being so kind. "I like to eat too... at least I think I do... I'm not sure after being in here for so long."

He smirks but a smile breaks through. "I don't know why you're being so nice but... thanks. Sorta makes me forget about all my complaints for a while."

His fingers fiddle with his blanket again. "So um... see you... tomorrow?"

Stacy's comment makes Eric's eyes go huge until he laughs outright. Her slip of the tongue proved he wasn't the only one that sometimes spoke before thinking, and although his own cheeks were red, it was too funny not to laugh.

"Hey, hey..." He interrupts her, knowing the kids were listening now. "That's not fair, changing the subject." He looks at Ashlee and winks. "Does she do this often?"

Dylan hides a grin and keeps his eyes on the table. Seeing Eric and Stacy having fun like this was... different. But somehow, he liked it.

"What?!" Hunter is late in taking off at a sprint behind Katie, caught off guard by her bluff. "Why you little..."

Trying to catch up, at least his legs were longer than Katie's, bringing him up to her side. "Slow?" he pants. "Stick in the mud... scared... slow..." He pushes to keep up with her. "What is it with you anyway?!"

Reaching the end of the beach neck-and-neck with Katie, Hunter slams into one of the rocks to bring the run to a sudden halt. Sinking down into the sand, he flops onto his back with his arms spread out wide and laughs, trying to catch his breath. "For all the... the insults..." He gasps for air. "You have to say at least...one thing nice now."

Slow

Looking into the distance where Hunter talked about racing too Katie just cocks her head for a second. A nice evening, the cool water and soft sand and a race? Was a good night this was and what a fun time it had been.

   "A race huh? I don't know about....SIKE!!!!"

Dashing through the water Katie splashes behind her. She know she was getting a little bit wet but it wasn't much so she new sooner or later it would be alright.

"Now added to everything else...I think your slow."

Ashlee gives a smile as she sakes her head. Seeing her mom with Eric didn't bother her like seeing her mom with Jeff. There was just something about Eric she really liked.

"Nah, I like Eric and he's always been kind to me. My mom deserves to be happy too, and I like seeing her happy."

"Ohhh I've already checked you out..."

Realizing what she said Stacy's cheeks go red. She didn't mean it like that. She simply ment she had checked the first out when she had caught him speeding.

"I mean....umm....I ment....Sooo....everyone know what they want to eat?"

Giving another big smile Grace gives a nod. She loved to cook, and it might be fun not to mention for some reason just seeing Jared sitting there, knowing nothing about his past is made her sad.

"Of course I would. I like cooking and...I think it would be nice to put my talents to use. Oh and I'll make sure nothing with pineapple."

There was hope locked in there some where...Grace new it. Maybe something told her Jared needed someone a friend in his life, and God too. This could be the way, maybe she could messenger, only God new the answer to that but who was she to say no to a calling.

"Not to mention if I make it that means I can eat some of it too and I LOVE to eat."

Suspicious

Seeing Katie laugh, Hunter's smile widens. Her teasing makes him laugh too. "Hey, I could stand like this all day." He keeps his foot in the air. "I studied under the flamingos."

Finally setting his foot back down in the water, he shakes his head. Still grinning, he studies her for a moment, enjoying her laughter "There it is... there's the spark that was missing."

Turning quickly back to the water, he hooks his hands in his pockets and just stares out into the darkness. "If I didn't have to ride my bike back, I'd go for a swim," he muses. "Maybe that'll be for next time." He tosses Katie a sidelong glance, accompanied by a new grin. Would there be a next time? Who knew. Maybe she'd go home tonight, call Jason and they'd work things out and Hunter would be back to sorting through boxes on his evenings alone. No matter... he was having fun tonight and would remember it.

Scanning the beach, he squints to the far end where the large rocks jutted out into the water. "Race ya to the rocks," he dares.

Ashlee's words struck Dylan and he concentrates on his water glass. Was life the same as riding a horse? He wondered.

Still thinking about that, his attention is brought back around as he's nudged by Ashlee's elbow. Following her gaze he looks at Stacy and Eric a moment before giving Ashlee a bit of a wry expression. He'd seen those two making eyes at each other long before this, and nobody knew just what he'd seen in the barn recently. "Could they be any more obvious?" he questions under his breath.

Only after speaking does he wonder if Ashlee thought it was a good thing or not. There was only one way to find out so he didn't end up sticking his foot in his mouth. "Bother you?"

"If I got any slower, the snails would pass me by." Eric gives Stacy a rather sly look. "Besides... what do you want with my file anyway? Have I been flagged as a suspicious character, or do you just want to check me out?"

Thinking Grace is going to leave, Jared is surprised when she returns to sit on the bed. Hearing what she'd like to do, his face resembles something of surprise and fascination.

"You... you'd do that? For me?"

He had a feeling she wouldn't do this for just any patient. But why him?

"Um... yeah, if... if you want to. I mean, I'm not gonna turn down food that hasn't been cooked here. Anything but pineapple I guess... I hear I'm allergic to that."

His expression remains inquisitive though. "You'd really take the time?"

Slowed Down

Finished with the heat Grace moves around the room throw some stuff away and putting other stuff back into her bag. Stopping and looking at Jared again her cocks her head for a second her smile never seemed to fade.

"We are doing to do this method for a week, than after that we will do it once a week. Every night though on your own I wasn't you to ice your legs, and put heal on them. Since your not using the muscles regularly you need to continue with the hot and cold to keep the blood flowing so they wont lock up anymore than they have."

Cleaning everything up Grace goes to the door to Jared's room and closes it slightly. She wanted to keep his spirits up and maybe even help a little bit with his past and she had a good idea. Coming over to JAred again she sits on the edge of the bed and gives a whisper.

"So I know I am only a PT Dr but I was thinking tomorrow...maybe I can bring in some different samples of food you can try. It's one step forward in remember what you like and don't like, it would be something other and Hospital food, and it might be fun. What do you think?"

Taking a sip of her pop and sucking on an ice cube for a moment Ashlee gives a nod. Finally crunching down on it and chewing it she was able to reply.

"I'll have to remember that...always get back on right away. Its...kinda like life I guess. We all mess up we are human, but taking a few steps back is ok as long as we move forward again."

It was nice chatting with Dylan like this. They had talked before for sure but this was more sit down, and having a extended conversation and Ashlee liked it. Looking over at her mom and Eric she quirks an eye brow before giving Dylan a little elbow and nodding twords them. A grin spread across her lips, she wondered if that look in her mom's eyes was the look of someone maybe becoming head over heels for another person.

Stacy gives a laugh sipping her coffee. Her eyes twinkle again as she looks over at Eric. Something about this night was special, maybe because it was his daughters birthday or maybe it was something else, but it felt so natural.

"Well maybe if you slowed down, I wouldn't have to look up a file on you."

Katie can't help but laugh again loudly that she almost lost her footing. Regaining her balance though she continues to laugh. It felt good to laugh, a breath of fresh air, a spice in a dull food. Maybe this was why Jason had started spending more time with his friends...maybe this was what she had been missing.

"Ohhhhh....a seashell...I shall carish it forever."

Taking a few steps forward Katie takes the seashell from Hunter's toe and holds it close to her pretending to show it some love. Looking up at Hunter Katie gives another laugh.

"I think you better put both feet back on the ground before you fall on your butt."

Shell

A fighter... was he really? Jared's cheeks gain just a bit more color as he gives Grace a sheepish sort of grin. "That wouldn't be so bad. Even a black sheep's gotta fight for something, right?"

It was a somewhat encouraging thought. And even that was better than nothing at this point. Maybe Grace was right. Maybe he could ask some different questions of his mother and brother. Questions that might not be so sensitive. Simple things. Jared really didn't have a whole lot of hope when it came to his memory, but it would be nice to know a few more things. He knew he would be in the hospital for a while yet, but he'd like it if he at least had something to go on when he was finally released.

"So, um... how often do we do this stuff with my legs and all that?"

"Eh... falling off isn't so bad." Dylan shrugs. "Sparky always makes me get right back on again. He says if a rider doesn't, it'll just make it all the harder to get back on later. I figure he's right. Although I'm probably just more stubborn than anything and don't want Sharpshooter to think he beat me."

His finger draws little designs in the sweat of his water glass. He hadn't talked this much since... well, it had been a while. It was better than just sitting in awkward silence though.

Eric's one eyebrow arcs and he grins back at Stacy. "Ah...so now I actually know your age for sure. I should have tried that method sooner. Although I must say, it ain't fair that you've got everybody's files. It means I don't got any secrets, and that is definitely not to my advantage."

Leaning back in his chair, his grin becomes a full smile, his eyes twinkling. "I'll have to think up some new stuff just so I can say there's something you don't know about me."

Hunter can't help but laugh at Katie and he shakes his head. "First I'm a stick in the mud, and now I'm scared. Within five minutes, you have totally destroyed my entire reputation - you do realize this, don't you?"

Smirking at her, he finally takes a step into the water so it comes up to his ankles. Swishing around a little bit, he stops short, his eyes going wide. "It may not bite, but I swear I just felt a nibble on my toe."

Pausing again, he furrows his brow. "Oh, wait... no... my bad." Lifting his foot out of the water, he had picked up a seashell with his toes. Remaining balanced on one leg, he lifts his dripping foot towards Katie. "Here have a shell," he teases.

Fighter for Sure

A smile spreads across Grace's face as she gives a small nod. She could understand why he had questions mostly the simple ones her wanted to know and that was a good place to start as any.

"Maybe its those simple questions you should be asking than. The ones that don't really dig to deep."

At the mention of Jared feeling something Grace goes back to the leg that had the heating pad on it. Placing her hand over top of his leg she could feel the warmth coming through on its on, and his muscles twitching slightly. The treatment had started to work...and already.

"Thats a good thing, it would seem your muscles want to walk again as bad as you do. After a few more days of this I think we are ready to try the harder stuff. You should be very please, most of the time it takes more than one treatment to get this far."

Taking the heating pad off the one leg and placing it on the other to do the same thing she looks up into Jared's eyes.  Studying them for a long moment searching. From the moment she had met him Grace could tell his eyes told many storys because they were deep, and full of emotions.

"You might not know much about your past but I think you know one more thing now...You a fighter for sure."

Ashlee gives a smile to Dylan and nods her head. Horses sure could be intimating so she didn't blame Dylan for being frightened of them at first. If she hadn't spend so much time reading about them, and being around them when she got here she would of been the same way for sure.

"Thats one thing I am not looking forward to is the first time I fall off the horse. Even if it is my fault."

Stacy can't help but laugh a little at Eric's comment about someone a little younger. Did he know how old she was? Did he think she was younger than she really was? In a way it was a bit flattering to think that maybe she didn't look her age after all.

"You're hardly old Eric....If I remember correctly only seven years older. You have to be ten to be coconsidered out of my age range."

Picking up her cup of coffee Stacy gives a sip a small grin on her lips. To her age was just a number but teasing Eric about it anyways was kind of fun so why not.

   "Hunnnnn....ter......Hunttttttt....er...."

Katie gives a grin and cocks her head as she softly calls his name the water lapping over and around her legs. She'd always loved the sound of the water espcialy at night when it was quiet and you could hear it a little better.

"Hey look at that I think I heard it calling your name."

Bending down Katie splashes a little water Hunter way but not to much knowing soon they would have to ride the bike back home and being wet would not only be dangerous, but would make for a colder ride.

"The way your standing at the edge of the water like that makes me think your scared of it or something...I promise it wont bit."

Younger

"Stick in the mud? Me?" Hunter gives Katie a grin, watching her step into the water. Was she flirting with him? Surely not. Not after she had just spilled her guts about her boyfriend - it was obvious she loved him. No... she was just trying to have a little fun, and he'd treat it as such. Now wasn't the time for his cheesy pick-up lines. He spreads out his arms. "Do I look like a stick in the mud to you?"

Just watching her for a few more moments, he finally shakes his head, groaning. Taking off his jacket, he unlaces his boots and takes those off too, along with his socks, and rolls up his jeans.

Standing, he walks slowly through the sand, stopping at the water's edge. He sets his hands on his hips and wriggles his toes in the water, but that was all. "I don't know... I definitely hear the water calling your name, but I haven't heard my name yet."

"Usually Sharpshooter." Dylan nods at Ashlee. "Sparky's had me on him for a while now so he's pretty much my regular mount. I've hit the ground a few times but nothing too serious and it's always been my fault. Sharpshooter can get stubborn but Sparky says it's good for me."

Something close to a wry grin toys at the very edges of Dylan's mouth. "I guess I don't mind though." He rolls his eyes. "Now that I don't freak out around the horses."

Eric chuckles. "I could be wrong, but I think you might need somebody younger if you're after the company of somebody your age."

He cocks his head, his eyes roaming Stacy's face as his smile remains. "But I'm glad my presence at least ain't repulsive. Seeing you two girls smiling makes the whole day worth it in my book."

"Yeah, I suppose." Jared hoped that if he found out he'd been a lousy kind of guy, that he'd be able to shake that reputation. But why would he have been a black sheep? What had he been like? He didn't feel like a bad person.

"I don't know... I don't want anybody putting pressure on my family if they don't wanna talk to me about any of that. I mean maybe I shouldn't care at all. Just pick up any pieces I've got and start over from scratch."

He sighs, looking away from Grace again. "Maybe there won't be any shock. Maybe it'll never come back to me. I just... I have so many questions."

What had his childhood been like? What were he and Justin like as kids? Had he ever been in love? Had a girlfriend? What kind of jobs had he had?

A little tingle in his leg makes his eyes snap back to Grace. "Hey I kinda felt something there for just a second."

Stick in the Mud

Continuing to look out at the water Katie gives a small sigh resting her chin on her knees. She didn't know what to think, what to feel, everything was just so messed up and now the thought of Jason cheating...could it be true?

"I...I don't think he would do that, but I guess...now that you said something it sure does seem like it."

Finally looking to Hunter and than back to the water Katie didn't want to think of the sad anymore tonight. It was rather depressing and she like to keep her time out on a happy note. Thats what it was about right...finding herself and her emotions. She'd dwelled enough on the bad ones it was time for the good ones.

Slipping and shoes and socks off Katie sets them aside letting her toes dig into the sand. The warmth, yet cool, and the softness felt nice. Standing Katie looks down at Hunter as a grin forms across her face. There were days she wished she was a little kid, when boys where gross and being boyish was ok.

"I don't know about you but that water is calling my name...I think."

Rolling up her jeans Katie makes her way across the sand and to the water front. Letting the gentile waves wash over her feet. Feeling the cool water Katie gives a little shiver but a smile crosses her face as she turns around to walk backwards in the water a little more.

"Come on, your not going to be a stick in the mud are you?"

Continuing to work on Jared's other leg time slowly slipped by. The seconds went to minutes and the minutes just didn't seem long enough. Grace didn't mind though talking with Jared was nice, and he seemed to need someone to talk too.

"The black sheep huh? Could be true I guess, but that doesn't mean it has to stay true right? Even if you remember everything from your past if you don't like whats there you don't have to go back to it."

Finishing up with Jared's leg Grace places ice on that leg, and heat on the other give the muscles time to warm up now too. This would how it would be for at least the next week. Boring yes, but very helpful. How knows maybe even one day Grace could bring Jared down to her office on the first floor just so it would be a change up form his room.

"So, black sheep or not its not fair they are holding things from you. Maybe the Dr could talk to help and encourage them to talk about your past even if they don't want too. I think it would be smart, and better than you just remembering one day and it being a shock to your system."

Ashlee gives a nod to Dylan. She new Moonbeam was a calmer horse and that was ok with her. For her first time riding she didn't mind that at all. She'd rather be on a calm horse than a wild one that would scare the crap out of her.

"Yep he does. She is pretty calm and that is alright with me. What one are you riding on?"

Stacy gives a large smile to Eric, she didn't know why he was thanking her but hear that this made him feel like he was a part of something she things she understood. As much as Ashlee needed a father, Eric wanted to have a child as well. Maybe...just maybe Ashlee was the way he could experience that.

"It's my please Eric...it's not only Ashlee that enjoys your company...I do too. Your very nice, and its really is nice to be able to talk to someone else my age."

Cheating

Hunter just lets Katie talk, quickly realizing that she needed to let some of this out. He felt bad for her - it sounded like this whole thing with her and Jason really had screwed things up. He still didn't understand it, but he continued to refrain from asking a bunch of questions. It really didn't matter and he might understand more of it later. For now though... Katie's feelings were obviously being hurt and that's all he needed to know.

Sitting up with her, he sighs. "Don't be sorry." He knew what being jealous felt like. Boy did he know. It didn't feel good. It felt like being left out and shoved to the side. "That's a tough bit to swallow, for anybody, let alone you, who's been like, 'connected' as you say, to Jason." He wondered if it was a whole lot worse for her after not being able to communicate with Jason like she had before. Once again, Hunter was clueless about all that or what it was like, so his imagination had to fill in the cracks. And who was Rick? He wasn't sure.

Falling into silence for a few minutes, he rests his arms on his knees and watches the peaceful water. Finally though he turns his head to study Katie, his eyes searching her face. "Jason's not... cheating on you, is he?"

Jared listens quietly to Grace, finding her story an interesting one. Lots of people would probably turn out bitter after all that. But not her... she had embraced a new life away from her blood family. There was a strength about her. A peaceful one at that. Jared couldn't help but wonder what it was or how she'd gotten it.

"Yeah, I see what you're saying. I think we all must be wired to want to know our real families, but I think that's cool that you've got your adopted family and love 'em that much."

Thinking back to her suggestion a few minutes prior, he shakes his head. "Whenever I talk to my mom about family, she clams up. Kinda like Justin, but not quite as bad. I'm...." His eyes drop. "...getting the feeling that I'm a black sheep or something. If I was that important or loved, I woulda heard from somebody, even if I didn't live around here. I mean I know I didn't - that much I've found out.  I guess I'd just moved here recently. But still... if I had like family or friends that cared about me, I would have at least gotten a note in the mail or a phone call."

All of a sudden, Jared realized just how alone he'd been feeling. His eyes remain down and his jaw muscles tighten as he tries not to let it bother him. It did though. All his mom talked about was current events... her days of shopping and her friends. And Justin, who only visited on rare occasion, would barely say hi, let alone talk about anything in the past. Jared was getting tired of fishing for information "You'd think my mom and brother would have like, sat down with me and filled me in, or something. I mean, isn't that the way it should work? I lost everything and they're just letting me sit here like a dummy and not even trying to help me regain anything. I like my mom, don't get me wrong, she's awfully sweet, but... I just don't understand."

Dylan glances over his menu at Ashlee and gives her a little nod. "Yeah... yeah when Eric lets you start riding by yourself maybe we can ride together. Sparky's still working with me too but lots of it's just practice now."

He finally sets his menu down, decided on what he wanted. "So he's.... got you on Moonbeam?"

Eric cups his water glass with his hands and looks at the ice while a smile spreads on his lips. His eyes rise to Stacy and he shakes his head. "I don't know what you're thanking me for. I'm the one feeling mighty special right about now."

He glances over at Ashlee and Dylan talking then back to Stacy. His eyes find hers and he just searches them for a few moments. This setting... being here... was nice. It was almost like a little family and... it sent a nice warmth through Eric. He wondered if this is why Jeff had wanted to be with Stacy and Ashlee too, if it had felt like this for him. And then he wonders what his brother might think if he knew Eric was spending time like this with them. Would he mind?

"Thanks for letting me come along... I haven't... felt a part of much in a while so... this is nice."

Unloaded

Katie can't help but laugh as she turns her head to look at Hunter. She enjoyed just spending time with him too. It was nice, it felt good, and just having someone to talk to who really had no part in this all made it slightly easier to talk about.

"Ha, I'm not trying to make him jealouse. I'm not like that. I am just simply trying to have my own friends and not sit at home twiddling my thumbs."

Letting out a sigh again Katie looks at the sky remember what had happened when they were at the park with Sandy and Kaylee. Even though they hadn't talked about it and everything seemed fine it still hurt knowing that whole thing had taken place.

"I guess you could say maybe I am the one who is jealous.  All Jason talks about anymore is Sandy this and Sandy that, Sandy picked a time for all of us to go bowling...Do you think I ever get invited? No...of course not why would I? And than when he gets a text from her he gets this smile on his face...and...I do feel like whacking him over the head."

Sitting up Katie just than realized she had been rambling. Completely unloading on Hunter and telling him more than maybe he wanted to hear. She couldn't help it though it really was some stuff that had been bothering her and Hunter just happened to be the prime target.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to just unload on you. Just...When I talk to Jason about it he thinks I am being mean I can see it in his eyes when I mentioned Sandy the other day. Than Rick keeps telling me it will take time for things to work out...I just...everyone says this is normal...but its far from that to me."

Continuing to just rub Jared's legs Grace gives a nod. He'd had a dream, that had to be good. It meant his mind was trying to push through his memories.

"I wouldn't give up hope yet. Hey...maybe you dont live around here and thats why no one has come to see you! or maybe you could ask you mom about family."

Finally stopping Grace pulls a towl from her bag and an ice pack. Setting it a side she takes the wires off of Jared's leg and puts it on the other. Placing the ice pack on the one she had just worked on. Going around the bed she does that same thing, and starts to rub it as well.

"So you know, you and your brother dont get along, You father passed away, your mom is greek and you know how to flirt..."

Grace gives a grin.

"...You know more about your family than I know about mind. I never got to meet my parents. I lived most of my life in an orphanage not because my parents didn't want me but because they didn't have much money and from what I was told they though I would have a better chance else where."

Talking about her past Grace continues to smile. There was no bitterness in her voice, or anger on her face. The past was the past and she had accepted it. It had also drawn her closer to God and shaped her into who she was now.

"Sometimes I think about finding them, but I figured why? There is so much time lost there that really there is no point. I have my adopted family and to me...they are my real family. I even have a little Neice now too. She is new my sister in law had her last month. But ya know...even if everything is ok...I think there is still and always will be a longer somewhere to know my real parents even if I have accepted everything. Know what I mean?"

Sitting down at the table Stacy was quite comfortable. She let Ashlee have her own space talking with Dylan while she talked with Eric. But at the though and mention of what to eat her eyes scan the menu for another time trying to figure it out.

"I am kind of at a toss up between the shrimp scampi and the Scallops with risotto. I think I am leaning twords the scampi though."

"I already know what I want. I would like to get the breaded jumbo shrimp with lemon butter sause and the backed potato with lobster on it. I think that looks really good."

Closing her menu Ashlee herself new she had to or she would look over the menu again and want something different this time. It was always like that when she went out to eat. The more she looked the more she wanted to try something different.

Turning to Dylan she gives a smile wondering if he had figured out what he wanted to order. He could take his time no one was in a rush. She did want to help him relax though.

"Hey, now that I am learning how to ride when I get better maybe we can ride together. I bet that would be fun."

Looking and listing to her daughter Stacy gives another smile. She was so proud of how her daughter had turned out and how good she was. Every day was a blessing and made her prouder and prouder. Giving a glance back to Eric she just smiles.

"Thanks for sharing this special day with us. I know it means a lot to Ashlee and I both."

Jealous

"I like seafood," Eric agrees. "Dylan?"

Dylan had been paying more attention to the scenery than the conversation and looks quickly from the window. "Um, yeah, that's fine."

"Good. Then seafood it is." Eric gestures out the windshield. "Once we get into town, you'll want to take a right at the first stoplight."

It didn't take too much longer until the little group had made it into town and to the restaurant. They were just early enough that it wasn't too busy yet, which was just fine.

Getting inside and finding a nice table, Eric sits opposite Dylan, so Stacy and Ashlee can be across from each other too. After they are given water and menus, they're left alone for just a little while.

Dylan scans the menu having absolutely no idea what to get either. This wasn't the most expensive place but it wasn't cheap either. He wasn't sure what he should choose and didn't want to pick something too expensive. He opts to wait and see what the others are having first.

Eric quirks an eyebrow, cocking his head at his own menu. "I may not be able to decide," he muses. "Although lobster is sounding mighty good."

"Right." Hunter didn't really understand, but it was obvious that Katie felt she was being treated unfairly - enough so that she was hurt. At least Hunter could sense it. It was all over her face and in her tone. "I told you next time he made you feel bad to whack him upside the head."

He lies on his back again, contemplating the whole thing. "So... really, you're hanging out with me for spite." He grins. "If you're trying to make him jealous though, we should probably be seen somewhere more public than this next time."

He turns his head a little to look at Katie again. "Although... I must say... this is nice."

Jared grins, finding out Grace was single. At least now he wouldn't feel guilty for his silly banter with her.

Watching everything she was doing, he takes interest in how she was hooking everything up. It was obvious she was skilled in this area - it was beyond him. He did feel a very faint tingle though, so that must be good.

Her question makes him shake his head. "Nah. I've almost given up. Although I had a weird dream last night.  I was a kid and there was another boy... I woke up wondering if it was my brother, but I don't know."

He falls silent for a moment, toying with the edge of his blanket. "My mom and brother are the only two people that have come to visit me. Nobody else has or even contacted me or anything. It... kinda makes me wonder why, ya know? Like... there's obviously some history between me and Justin, but I wonder if maybe he's not the only person I've ticked off or something."

waiting for nothing

Just quiet for a moment at Hunters comment about Jason and her Katie lets the warm breeze pass over her. They wernt at odds so to say but they wernt ok either. It seemed like they were drifting farther apart, and spending time together was less and less.

"No not really at odds just...its just...the whole connection thing and...out time spend together had been less and less. I sit at home waiting for him to call or ask me to go out with his friends too...but it just...it never happens."

Letting out a heavy sigh Katie flops down on her back. She didn't care if she got sand or grass on her. Looking up at the sky was to pretty and as her mind wondered on Jason and how much fun he was having...she tried even hard not too it hurt to know she was missing out.

"So if he can go out with his friends, I guess I can go out with mine too. I dont think it would be to fare for me to continue sitting around and waiting for nothing right?"

Sitting in the backseat Ashlee thinks for a moment. What did she want for dinner? It would be something that she didn't have often but something everyone would want. Going through the options again she finally smiled.

"How about seafood? As long as everyone else dosent mind."

Looking at her daughter in the rear view mirror and than over to Eric Stacy gives a smile at her daughters taste. She didnt mind seafood at all and it was something they didn't have often.

"That sounds great with me if it is with everyone else."

Grace gives a laugh as she goes over to Jared and pulls up his pants leg places some of the sticky pads onto it and than hooking the wire up. Doing her best not to put them in spots where they would hurt coming off.

"Thats a good question and the answer would be...no. I don't so your in the clear for now."

Once finished Grace turns it on a very low setting so Jared could get use to it and than turns it up. Seeing his toes twitch a little more she gives a nod and sets the device down while it was still on.

"See how your toes are moving on there own from the eletric jolts? Thats a good thing it means you nerves arnt damaged and there is much hope that with lots of work you will walk again."

Pulling a chair over to the bed Grace sits down and working around the wires she starts to rub his leg as she tries to get the blood pumping in them again. It would help and than after would come icing it, than heating it. Continuing to rub she tries to make a little small talk too.

   "So...any luck remembering anything today?"

"I think thats a great idea. Ice cream and the Antique place might be fun."

Beth liked that idea and who new maybe she would be able to find a few things for around her apartment. She'd like to get some new stuff in that place, some stuff she could call her own and really enjoy.

"I'm kind of having a hankering for some frozen yourget with all the unhealthy fixings."

Wuss

Hunter glances at Katie again, a wry grin curling the corner of his mouth. "Hmm... maybe. Wasn't so bad 'til I let my mind wander places I didn't want to go."

Flopping onto his back, he puts his hands behind his head and stares up at the stars. "Life used to be a whole lot less complicated. Then one day you come to a fork in the road and go right instead of left. And from then on out, nothing is ever the same and you can't go back no matter how hard you try."

It wasn't often he talked about these things with anyone. It wasn't often he thought about it at all. But ever since that night seeing Kyle, it had become impossible to ward off thoughts of the past.

Quiet for a few minutes, Hunter suddenly turns over to prop himself up on his elbow, facing Katie. "So girls with boyfriends don't usually go off with another guy late at night for a stroll on the beach." He searches her with curiosity. He'd gotten the idea from the other night at dinner that things between her and Jason weren't all that great, but he still didn't have his head wrapped around that whole thing. And...it changed the subject from talk of himself.

"You and Jason on the outs?"

Seeing Stacy enter the room, Eric stands up from the table. Her attractiveness tonight did not escape his eyes, though he keeps that thought to himself. She did look very nice... beautiful, in fact. But there was no proper way to even try saying that. He picks up his hat and fiddles with the brim. "Well there's plenty of places to choose from. Once we get to town, I can point a few things out and you gals can decide where to go."

Dylan does his best to relax... it isn't easy though. He did feel pretty out of place. He was friends with Ashlee... he was okay with Eric... he was... so-so with Stacy... and that was it. But seeing Ashlee's smile, he's reminded of why he'd said yes.

Eric goes to the door and holds it open for the others while putting on his hat. "Alrighty... all aboard that's goin' aboard."

It doesn't take long to pile in the car and be on their way. Dylan sits in back with Ashlee, remaining quiet for the most part, but trying to engage in conversation when included. He really was trying. He was just... outside the loop. Or so it felt. But he was doing his best. Eric sat in the front with Stacy, feeling... much more relaxed than he'd anticipated. It was easy to talk with her, and laughing with her and Ashlee made the atmosphere light. He was glad he'd been invited. It made him feel special to be included in celebrating Ashlee's birthday, and it was something that he quietly cherished in his heart.

"Okay... so... what's the birthday girl hungry for?" He turns around to look back at Ashlee, grinning. They'd be to town in just a few minutes. "We've got... steak... seafood... hamburgers... Chinese... Mexican... fast food..."

Seeing Grace, Jared perks up a little and shuts off the television. He grins and shakes his head. "I think you do mean torture."

Looking at the equipment and the wires, for the first time, he's a little nervous. It did nothing to his determination though. He nods at everything she says, ready for anything. "Okay. If I scream like a girl, you'll know it hurt." A new grin surfaces. "But if I do, you can't tell anybody because then they'd think I was a wuss."

Pulling himself up a little more wasn't easy, but his shoulders were so sore from lying in this position for too long. Oh to get up and walk.

"I'm ready when you are, Miss PT." He quirks an eyebrow. "Oh and by the way, you gave me permission to flirt, but I never asked if you've got a husband or boyfriend. I wouldn't want to get out of here just to have some guy put me right back in again for hitting on his girl."

Second Nature

Smiling at his comment about her balance Katie takes her helmet off and dismounts from the bike. It was funny to hear someone say that but at the same time it was kind of nice. To actually have someone tell you, you were good at something with simple words.

"I guess balance is a second nature to me since I grew up on a ranch and rode horses."

Unzipping her own jacket and taking it off Katie throws it over the seat of the motorcycle. It was to nice of a night out to worry about a jacket. If it hadn't been for the bike ride she wouldn't have even bothered bringing it.

Taking a spot next to Hunter Katie sits down with her legs stretched out in front of her. Taking in a deep breath of air she could smell the warmth, the water, it all tickled her senses. She could remember when her and Jason would take rides out here. It was always fun and they would always laugh. Katie wondered if there would be more times like that...or if being left out, and having lunches together was the only road for them now. What was it that made her different from his friends?

"Your welcome Hunter. I don't mind spending time with you after all and its better than sitting around for something that you know wont happen."

Looking over at Hunter Katie studys him for a long moment. There was something about him, something different tonight. It was almost like a past had come out of no where on him and now he longed for something he no longer had. For a moment Katied wondered how simaler they were, yet so different.

"Tonight, you seem to be far off somewhere else. I would guess you had about as good a day as I had."

"Come on mom, you look fine can we go meet the others now?"

Ashlee sat at the small table in the bunk house a nice shirt one, and her good jeans and sneakers. Her hair tied back in a braid with a blue ribbon at the end. She'd been waiting about ten minutes for her mom to get ready and though there was an irritated tone in her voice she couldn't help the grin that formed on he face. She new she was trying to look her best...since Eric was going after all.

"Yeah yeah yeah I am coming"

Stepping out of the bathroom Stacy had her good pants on and a black shirt her tan jacket over top. Her hair was still wet and allowed to fall where it wanted put it almost looked like she had spent so much time on it.

   "Ready to go now mom?"

"I think so. Lets meet up with the others ok?"

Stepping outside the bunk house Ashlee and Stacy make there way to the mess hall. Stacy wasn't sure where they would eat at but she wanted it to be someplace nice. Maybe Eric could help her with that.

Entering the dinning hall Stacy couldn't help but let her smile grow a little bigger seeing Eric and how good he looked tonight. This was the best she had seen him dressed but she sure liked it. Turning and seeing Ashlee go over to Dylan she gives a little nod. She was happy to see her daughter had made a friend and that Dylan had as well. He needed friends, good friends.

"Alright, I figured I would drive, and as to where to go...I'm not sure since we are still new here. But we can roll out if you guys want and see what happens. Hows that sounds?"

Ashlee gives a laugh standing next to Dylan. Looking to him she gives a big smile than looks back to her mom.

"Anything sounds good to me, I am starving."

Heading to Jared's room this morning Grace was a little late but not by to much. A bag was at her side and his folder in her hands once again. This was be the start, the first step to the slow process but the outcome, it would be great she hopped.

"Good Morning Jared! Sorry I am running a little late. I had to get all my tourcher...I mean equipment."

Grace give a little grin with humor in her eyes. Some of the stuff she used did look pretty bad but all in all it wasn't. Going into the bags and pulling out a masheen with a few wires on it she holds it up for Jared to see.

"We are going to try and stimulate you muscles. Its kind of like eltric shock but not enough to kill you. Only enough to warm your leg up. I'll start with your leg than work my way up to your spine. We will do that eat day, along with icing, and normal movements to try and get everything to stop being stiff. It will take a little bit but it will be a good start. If at any time you feel pain just let me know. ok?"

Thanks

Passing a vehicle and smoothly turning back into their own lane, Hunter listens to the way she felt about riding on the motorcycle. "Yeah..." He knew what it was. It was what had him addicted to the road. Shifting gears, the bike lurches a little before shooting forward at a faster speed. Hunter's eyes remain glued to the road and he leans forward a little bit more, making sure Katie leaned with him. "It's called freedom."

He didn't take the straight shot to the lake tonight. The ride was too nice to waste, and he ends up taking a different road that cost them an extra fifteen minutes before looping back to the highway. Eventually though, they do wind up at the lake, finding the parking lot almost deserted. It wasn't surprising at this hour, although some nights there were parties going on. Not tonight though.

Slowing down to a crawl, Hunter steers his bike between the curbs, driving onto the grass and only stopping once they'd reached the sand. Cutting the engine, he lets the bike rest to the side on the kickstand, and takes off his helmet, running a hand through his hair. Sliding off first, he's careful not to bump Katie, then holds the bike steady so she can dismount as well.

"You've got good balance," he comments as he locks the helmets to the bike. "I didn't have to worry about you pulling me off for a crash landing."

Grinning at her, he nods his head towards the beach before tucking his hands in his pockets and walking forward. His pace is slow... almost thoughtful as he walks through the sand, stopping a short ways from the gently lapping water. The moon shone brightly, reflecting off the small ripples. "I used to come here all the time," he muses, scanning the water. He could still hear the laughter. The voices. Family. Friends.

Feeling the warmth of the evening, he unzips his jacket and sighs deeply. Part of him was enjoying this evening. He was glad he wasn't alone. Katie was nice company. Coming to the lake was always fun, along with the ride. And part of him... part of him was still sitting next to that box in his living room.

Easing down to sit in the sand, he rests his arms on his knees, keeping his eyes on the lake. "Thanks for coming along tonight, Katie." He looks over at her, his expression genuine. "It's... been a while since I've been able to take a girl anywhere without... well, without more expected out of me, I guess." His eyes go back to the water. Katie wasn't that kind of girl. And he was glad of it.

Eric tips his hat back on his head and grins down at Ashlee. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."

Watching her head off to her and Stacy's bunkhouse, he shakes his head. She was something else. And... he'd really enjoyed himself today too. It was fun working with Ashlee. She was so easy to work with and she followed his directions well. Maybe... just maybe since Eric hadn't had his own family, he was getting a chance at something else. Maybe he'd never be a father, but maybe this was as close as God could give him. He wouldn't take it for granted.

Turning back to the barn, he finishes up with Static, then heads to his own bunkhouse. What he'd told Ashlee was true - he did have other stuff to do before tonight. But it wasn't barn work. It was icing his leg and putting it up for a while. He'd already done far too much today than he should have, but he was not going to miss out on going to town. He'd promised and would stick to it...

...By early evening, Eric was back in the dining hall, waiting for the other three. He wasn't sure who was driving what, so he'd opted just to wait and see. He didn't even know where Stacy had planned to take Ashlee, so he'd wound up in a nice pair of jeans and a casual but nice collared shirt, and his boots that were in better shape than his barn boots. It wasn't his Sunday best, but he didn't want to overdo it if they were going somewhere casual. His hair was still a bit damp from his shower, and he smelled of fresh aftershave.

Easing down at one of the tables, he sets his good cowboy hat aside to wait.

Dylan slowly walks from his bunkhouse, feeling a bit awkward. He'd cleaned up some, especially since he'd been working the barn earlier, but he really wasn't so sure about this. He'd told Ashlee he'd go to town with them but... now he wondered if he should have declined. He'd dug up a pair of jeans without holes in them and he'd scrounged around to find a t-shirt that either wasn't stained or offensive. It was the best he could do on short notice.

"Bright and early. Got it." Jared gives Grace a thumbs up and a smile. He wasn't totally convinced any of this therapy would really work, but he was willing to give it a shot. "I'll be here."

...And he was. After being woken up for the umpteenth time for his medication, it was a boring early-morning show on television that kept him awake. Half his breakfast sat to the side getting cold. It tasted awful today and he just couldn't stomach any more of it.

Zach grins and shrugs. "I dunno... there's an antique mall down the street... wanna get some ice cream then go there?" He wasn't a big antique fan, but it was something to do, and he did enjoy looking around at all the old stuff. And every once in a while there were good deals too.

Comforting

Putting the helmet on and getting on behind the bike Katie can't help but smile herself as she can hear Hunter loud and clean. She was impressed to say the least but than again should she be surprised? She'd never been to a bike race, let along a car race but from seeing reports they made some good money. So why wouldn't Hunter go all out with what he had?

"He doesn't have a bike like this but I'll be ok. Hold on tight, don't move around to much...lets do this."

Making sure her arms were around Hunter good before they stared Katie was ready. Taking the easy start through town Katie didn't mind. She could be more relaxed, get the feel of the bike and enjoy the scenes. It was always different being on a bike than in a car and everything seemed to look differently to her too.

Coming to the highway Katie new she better hang on a little bit better. As the bike starts to go faster and the lights wiz by she was happy she was right as her grip tightens a little more. She wasn't scared though she had gone fast with Jason before and for some reason she just new Hunter was in control.

"I think you picked the highway for one reason...you just wanted me to hold you tighter."

Though Hunter couldn't see her a grin formed on Katie's face anyways. There was a joking tone in her voice though so he would know she was. Continuing to watch as everything moved past every quicker Katie couldn't help the feeling of being free. It was almost like being on a horse. You were open, able to move and just...be.

"I've always enjoyed being on the back of a bike. There is just something about it thats nice, comforting almost."

Sliding down off the horse Ashlee stumbles a little but doesn't fall down. It would get easier with each time she did it for the she was sure. She just had to get use to it and no one got it one the first try for sure. Once getting her footing again and having Eric hold out the rains to her Ashlee beams as she takes them smiling.

   "Wow, thanks."

Walking with the horse and Eric back into the barn Ashlee sets to work with him unsaddling the horses, rubbing them down, and brushing them. Every moment was like a moment of bliss for Ashlee and she loved having Eric helping her.

Once finished she leans in and gives Moonbeam a kiss on the nose and a gentil pat on the neck before turning. She didn't want this to end but she new that though it was her birthday she still had school work and should probley work on that a little before dinner.

"Thanks again Eric. I should probley head to my bunk and get ready for tonight and work a little bit on my school work. See you tonight?"

Walking outside with Zach Beth takes in a deep breath of the air. It really was a nice day out today and Beth couldn't imagine staying locked inside. She didn't have anything to do tonight that she new of, other than a little cleaning.

"Sure we can figure something else out to do...I dont think I have anything going on tonight."

Turning to Zach she gives a smile Beth really was having a nice time spending the day with him. It was nice to get out and do something different. Spending time was different from spending time with Justin. Not a bad thing just different, and it was kind of nice to have different personality in the mix.

"But this time you pick what we do, I picked the last time."

Grace gives a laugh as she stands looking down at Jared her eyes giving a little sparkle. There was something in his eyes that told her he was stubborn, hard headed and wouldn't stop till he got what he wanted. She was happy to see that and his personality was a good match, she liked it.

"Remember as long as you keep it clean you can...if not than I revoke that right."

Giving a smile she didn't think she really would have anything to worry about. Something told her it would be in good fun and no harm would be done. It could be because he had no memorie of his past or maybe she just trusting.

"Alright, if you don't have any other questions...I'll see you tomorrow bright and early."

Precious Cargo

A start over. There was hope in that statement. Even so, Jared just wanted to know... he just wanted to know who he really was.

Grace's question bring his concentration back around again and he scoffs. "You kidding? The sooner the better in my book." He pauses. "Not that I have a book. But if I did, I'm sure that's what it would say." He manages a new little grin. "Besides, I wouldn't want to have to wait several days to flirt with you again since I have permission now."

Zach grins and reaches over to scratch Thimble's head. "Well in that case, I'll keep you informed about her."

Showing Beth the rest of the shelter didn't take long. He explained all he did - mostly helping with cleaning cages, feeding and exercising, and he gave Beth contact information in case she did want to come volunteer sometime too. By the time they were finished, it was still early afternoon yet, and it felt too nice of a day to waste.

Meandering out to the parking lot in the sunshine, Zach puts his hands in his pockets and glances to the side at Beth. "So... you got plans for the rest of the day? Or you wanna go do something?"

Eric laughs and nods at Ashlee. "You sure are." He wondered for a moment who was having more fun - her or him.

Though Eric wanted to just let Ashlee ride the rest of the day, he knew they couldn't. But he does let her stay in the saddle as long as he can.

Finally pulling to a stop in front of the gate, he looks over at Ashlee, grinning. "Well, cowgirl... I think we better dismount for the day. I think we both got things we need to do before we head into town."

Dismounting Static, he walks around to Moonbeam to hold her steady so Ashlee can slide off. Once she was off, he hands her the reins. "Job's not over 'til we get unsaddled. I'll help, but you can do the honors."

Though most of his face was hidden in his helmet, Hunter's eyes twinkle and his cheek rise, proving he was smiling at Katie's remark. "I think I'd like to see that."

He hands her the helmet and thumbs to the bike. "She's all warmed up."

Mounting the motorcycle again, he makes sure Katie gets settled behind him with her feet where they needed to be before he starts up the engine. "By the way, the helmets have mic's in them." He grins, knowing Katie could hear him. "So don't scream - you'll make me deaf."

Pulling away from the curb, he keeps the speed down for now. "I don't know what kind of bike your boyfriend's got, but you might wanna hang on." He'd be careful, but he knew this was different than other motorcycles, especially for a passenger. If they were gonna have any fun at all, he'd have to feel her hang onto him first - otherwise he'd be afraid of losing her off the back.

Driving through town, Hunter stays within the speed limit this time. Once they hit the highway though, he gradually takes advantage of the sparse traffic. Leaning low, he keeps his eyes on the road, remaining alert to Katie's movements to make sure she was still on tight. Satisfied she was, he tops the speed limit, watching the lights and signs whiz by. He kicks it into a higher gear but not quite as much as he would if he were alone - not when he had precious cargo sitting behind him.

Ms. Jefferson

Grace nods as she is quiet for a moment. She understood what Jared was saying. Not knowing who he was could be a scary thing, and getting to know it again even worse when you don't know if its good or bad. She would probley react the same way about it all too.

"Well if you weren't a good person than that doesn't mean you can't be a good person now. It's almost like a start over."

Giving a smile to Jared she tried to help him look on the bright side. She did believe too that with God's help and kindness anyone could be forgiven, and Jared was no acceptation. Maybe this was just his wake up call to get it together.

"So tomorrow should we give it a go on stimulating your legs or would you like to give it a few days?"

Holding the cat close Beth can't help but smile at the little purrs that came from the fuzz ball. She was so cute, and so lovey Beth really enjoyed holding her. This how day had been really good so far, and now this was just wonderful too.

"She is so cute and fuzzy I don't understand how anyone would not want to adopt her."

Pulling the kitty away a little bet Beth looks down into her blue eyes. It broke her heart to think that no one would want this cat and they would have to let her go soon. The can't hadn't done anything wrong so why should it be the one to have its life end.

"Well...if no one ends up wanting her...I'd take her. She's cute and I could use some company around the apartment. It's to quiet there sometimes."

Doing as Eric said as he lets her take hold herself Ashlee couldn't help the smile that spread even bigger across her face. His instructions were easy to follow and there was no harsh tone in his voice so it was nice to listen to what he had to say.

"Wow, I'm really doing it...I'm riding a horse."

Gently patting Moonbeams neck  Ashlee quickly returns both hands to the rains as the horse lifted its let a little bit to get an ich. Giving a laugh she couldn't help how silly she must look but she really didn't care either. This was way to much fun.

"I'll really be a cowgirl now!"

Hearing the bike rev outside Katie new it must be Hunter. Stopping in the living room she gives a little wave to Ryder and Thirteen as she puts her denim jacket on. Her hair was nicely put back in a poney tail and her holds jeans with the small hole in the knee was her atire.

"I'm going to be going out for a little bit. I got my keys so you can lock the door if you go to bed and I am not home. Have a good night guys."

Slipping her phone into her back pocket before turning from the living room and heading outside closing the door behind her. Making her way down the sidewalk and getting to Hunter Katie puts her hands in her pockets and gives him a small smile.

"At this rate your going to wake the whole neighborhood and have noise Ms. Jefferson knocking on my door tomorrow asking a million and one questions. Though I wouldn't have any problem to tell her to mine her own bees wax."
